இயேசு அவளுக்குப் பிரதியுத்தரமாக: நீ தேவனுடைய ஈவையும், தாகத்துக்குத்தா என்று உன்னிடத்தில் கேட்கிறவர் இன்னார் என்பதையும் அறிந்திருந்தாயானால், நீயே அவரிடத்தில் கேட்டிருப்பாய், அவர் உனக்கு ஜீவத்தண்ணீரைக் கொடுத்திருப்பார் என்றார்.

இயேசு அவளுக்கு மறுமொழியாக: நீ தேவனுடைய ஈவையும், தாகத்திற்குத் தா என்று உன்னிடத்தில் கேட்கிறவர் யார் என்பதையும் அறிந்திருந்தால், நீயே அவரிடத்தில் கேட்டிருப்பாய், அவர் உனக்கு ஜீவத்தண்ணீரைக் கொடுத்திருப்பார் என்றார்.

“தேவன் கொடுப்பவற்றைப்பற்றி நீ அறியவில்லை. குடிக்கத் தண்ணீர் கேட்கிற நான் யாரென்று உனக்குத் தெரியாது. இவற்றைப்பற்றி நீ அறிந்தால் நீ என்னிடம் தண்ணீர் கேட்டிருப்பாய். ஜீவத் தண்ணீரை நான் உனக்குக் கொடுத்திருப்பேன்” என்றார் இயேசு.

இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “கடவுளுடைய கொடை எது என்பதையும் ‘குடிக்கத் தண்ணீர் கொடும்’ எனக் கேட்பவர் யார் என்பதையும் நீர் அறிந்திருந்தால் நீரே அவரிடம் கேட்டிருப்பீர்; அவரும் உமக்கு வாழ்வு தரும் தண்ணீரைக் கொடுத்திருப்பார்” என்றார்.
