பலியையல்ல, இரக்கத்தையே விரும்புகிறேன் என்பதின் கருத்து இன்னதென்று போய்க் கற்றுகொள்ளுங்கள்; நீதிமான்களையல்ல, பாவிகளையே மனந்திரும்புகிறதற்கு அழைக்க வந்தேன் என்றார்.

நான் உங்களுக்கு ஒன்றைக் கூறுகிறேன். அதன் பொருளைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். விலங்குகளைப் பலியிடுவதை நான் விரும்பவில்லை. நான் மக்களிடம் கருணையை விரும்புகிறேன். நல்லவர்களை அழைக்க நான் வரவில்லை. பாவம் செய்தவர்களை அழைக்கவே நான் வந்தேன்” என்று கூறினார்.
