  3. וַיָּ֨קָם arose, qûm אִישָׁ֜הּ And her husband ʾîš וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ and went hālak אַֽחֲרֶ֗יהָ after ʾaḥar לְדַבֵּ֤ר her, to speak dābar עַל ʿal לִבָּהּ֙ friendly lēb לַֽהֲשִׁיבָ֔וֹ unto her, to bring her again, šûb וְנַֽעֲר֥וֹ having his servant naʿar עִמּ֖וֹ with ʿim וְצֶ֣מֶד him, and a couple ṣemed חֲמֹרִ֑ים of asses: ḥămôr וַתְּבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ and she brought bôʾ בֵּ֣ית house: bayit אָבִ֔יהָ him into her father's ʾāb וַיִּרְאֵ֙הוּ֙ saw rāʾâ אֲבִ֣י and when the father ʾāb הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה of the damsel naʿărâ וַיִּשְׂמַ֖ח him, he rejoiced śāmaḥ לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃ to meet him. qirʾâ
  4. וַיַּֽחֲזֶק retained ḥāzaq בּ֤וֹ חֹֽתְנוֹ֙ And his father in law, ḥātan אֲבִ֣י father, ʾāb הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה the damsel's naʿărâ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב him; and he abode yāšab אִתּ֖וֹ with ʾēt שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת him three šālôš יָמִ֑ים days: yôm וַיֹּֽאכְלוּ֙ so they did eat ʾākal וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ and drink, šātâ וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ and lodged lûn שָֽׁם׃ there. šām
  5. וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ בַּיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הָֽרְבִיעִ֔י on the fourth rĕbîʿî וַיַּשְׁכִּ֥ימוּ when they arose early šākam בַבֹּ֖קֶר in the morning, bōqer וַיָּ֣קָם that he rose up qûm לָלֶ֑כֶת to depart: hālak וַיֹּאמֶר֩ said ʾāmar אֲבִ֨י father ʾāb הַֽנַּעֲרָ֜ה and the damsel's naʿărâ אֶל unto ʾēl חֲתָנ֗וֹ his son in law, ḥātān סְעָ֧ד Comfort sāʿad לִבְּךָ֛ thine heart lēb פַּת with a morsel pat לֶ֖חֶם of bread, leḥem וְאַחַ֥ר and afterward ʾaḥar תֵּלֵֽכוּ׃ go your way. hālak
  6. וַיֵּֽשְׁב֗וּ And they sat down, yāšab וַיֹּֽאכְל֧וּ and did eat ʾākal שְׁנֵיהֶ֛ם both šĕnayim יַחְדָּ֖ו of them together: yaḥad וַיִּשְׁתּ֑וּ and drink šātâ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר had said ʾāmar אֲבִ֤י father ʾāb הַֽנַּעֲרָה֙ for the damsel's naʿărâ אֶל unto ʾēl הָאִ֔ישׁ the man, ʾîš הֽוֹאֶל Be content, yāʾal נָ֥א I pray thee, nāʾ וְלִ֖ין and tarry all night, lûn וְיִטַ֥ב be merry. yāṭab לִבֶּֽךָ׃ and let thine heart lēb
  7. וַיָּ֥קָם rose up qûm הָאִ֖ישׁ And when the man ʾîš לָלֶ֑כֶת to depart, hālak וַיִּפְצַר urged pāṣar בּוֹ֙ חֹֽתְנ֔וֹ his father in law ḥātan וַיָּ֖שָׁב again. šûb וַיָּ֥לֶן him: therefore he lodged lûn שָֽׁם׃ there šām
  8. וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם And he arose early šākam בַּבֹּ֜קֶר in the morning bōqer בַּיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַֽחֲמִישִׁי֮ on the fifth ḥămîšî לָלֶכֶת֒ to depart: hālak וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ said, ʾāmar אֲבִ֣י father ʾāb הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ה and the damsel's naʿărâ סְעָד Comfort sāʿad נָא֙ I pray thee. nāʾ לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ thine heart, lēbāb וְהִֽתְמַהְמְה֖וּ And they tarried māhah עַד until ʿad נְט֣וֹת nāṭâ הַיּ֑וֹם afternoon, yôm וַיֹּֽאכְל֖וּ and they did eat ʾākal שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ both of them. šĕnayim
  9. וַיָּ֤קָם rose up qûm הָאִישׁ֙ And when the man ʾîš לָלֶ֔כֶת to depart, hālak ה֥וּא he, hûʾ וּפִֽילַגְשׁ֖וֹ and his concubine, pîlegeš וְנַֽעֲר֑וֹ and his servant, naʿar וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar ל֣וֹ חֹֽתְנ֣וֹ his father in law, ḥātan אֲבִ֣י father, ʾāb הַֽנַּעֲרָ֡ה the damsel's naʿărâ הִנֵּ֣ה unto him, Behold, hinnē נָא֩ now nāʾ רָפָ֨ה draweth rāpâ הַיּ֜וֹם the day yôm לַֽעֲר֗וֹב toward evening, ʿārab לִֽינוּ tarry all night: lûn נָ֞א I pray you nāʾ הִנֵּ֨ה behold, hinnē חֲנ֤וֹת groweth to an end, ḥānâ הַיּוֹם֙ the day yôm לִ֥ין lodge lûn פֹּה֙ here, וְיִיטַ֣ב may be merry; yāṭab לְבָבֶ֔ךָ that thine heart lēbāb וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֤ם get you early šākam מָחָר֙ and to morrow māḥār לְדַרְכְּכֶ֔ם on your way, derek וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֖ that thou mayest go hālak לְאֹֽהָלֶֽךָ׃ home. ʾōhel
  10. וְלֹֽא not lōʾ אָבָ֤ה would ʾābâ הָאִישׁ֙ But the man ʾîš לָל֔וּן tarry that night, lûn וַיָּ֣קָם but he rose up qûm וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ and departed, hālak וַיָּבֹא֙ and came bôʾ עַד ʿad נֹ֣כַח over against nōkaḥ יְב֔וּס Jebus, yĕbûs הִ֖יא which hûʾ יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם Jerusalem; yĕrûšālaim וְעִמּ֗וֹ and with ʿim צֶ֤מֶד him two ṣemed חֲמוֹרִים֙ asses ḥămôr חֲבוּשִׁ֔ים saddled, ḥābaš וּפִֽילַגְשׁ֖וֹ his concubine pîlegeš עִמּֽוֹ׃ also with him. ʿim
  11. הֵ֣ם when they hēm עִם by ʿim יְב֔וּס Jebus, yĕbûs וְהַיּ֖וֹם the day yôm רַ֣ד spent; rādad מְאֹ֑ד was far mĕʾōd וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar הַנַּ֜עַר and the servant naʿar אֶל unto ʾēl אֲדֹנָ֗יו his master, ʾādôn לְכָה Come, hālak נָּ֛א I pray thee, nāʾ וְנָס֛וּרָה and let us turn in sûr אֶל into ʾēl עִֽיר city ʿîr הַיְבוּסִ֥י of the Jebusites, yĕbûsî הַזֹּ֖את this zōt וְנָלִ֥ין and lodge in it. lûn בָּֽהּ׃
  12. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl אֲדֹנָ֔יו And his master ʾādôn לֹ֤א him, We will not lōʾ נָסוּר֙ turn aside sûr אֶל hither into ʾēl עִ֣יר the city ʿîr נָכְרִ֔י of a stranger, nokrî אֲשֶׁ֛ר that ʾăšer לֹֽא not lōʾ מִבְּנֵ֥י of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel; yiśrāʾēl הֵ֑נָּה hēnnâ וְעָבַ֖רְנוּ we will pass over ʿābar עַד to ʿad גִּבְעָֽה׃ Gibeah. gibʿâ
  13. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר And he said ʾāmar לְנַֽעֲר֔וֹ unto his servant, naʿar לְךָ֥ Come, hālak וְנִקְרְבָ֖ה and let us draw near qārab בְּאַחַ֣ד to one ʾeḥād הַמְּקֹמ֑וֹת of these places māqôm וְלַ֥נּוּ to lodge all night, lûn בַגִּבְעָ֖ה in Gibeah, gibʿâ א֥וֹ or ʾô בָֽרָמָֽה׃ in Ramah. rāmâ
  14. וַיַּֽעַבְר֖וּ And they passed on ʿābar וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ and went their way; hālak וַתָּבֹ֤א went down bôʾ לָהֶם֙ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ and the sun šemeš אֵ֥צֶל upon them by ʾēṣel הַגִּבְעָ֖ה Gibeah, gibʿâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer לְבִנְיָמִֽן׃ to Benjamin. binyāmîn
  15. וַיָּסֻ֣רוּ And they turned aside sûr שָׁ֔ם thither, šām לָב֖וֹא to go in bôʾ לָל֣וּן to lodge lûn בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה in Gibeah: gibʿâ וַיָּבֹ֗א and when he went in, bôʾ וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ he sat him down yāšab בִּרְח֣וֹב in a street rĕḥōb הָעִ֔יר of the city: ʿîr וְאֵ֥ין for no ʾayin אִ֛ישׁ man ʾîš מְאַסֵּֽף that took ʾāsap אוֹתָ֥ם ʾēt הַבַּ֖יְתָה them into his house bayit לָלֽוּן׃ to lodging. lûn
  16. וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ And, behold, hinnē אִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš זָקֵ֗ן an old zāqēn בָּ֣א there came bôʾ מִֽן from min מַעֲשֵׂ֤הוּ his work maʿăśe מִן out of min הַשָּׂדֶה֙ the field śāde בָּעֶ֔רֶב at even, ʿereb וְהָאִישׁ֙ which also ʾîš מֵהַ֣ר of mount har אֶפְרַ֔יִם Ephraim; ʾeprayim וְהוּא and he hûʾ גָ֖ר sojourned gûr בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה in Gibeah: gibʿâ וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י but the men ʾîš הַמָּק֖וֹם of the place māqôm בְּנֵ֥י יְמִינִֽי׃ Benjamites. ben yĕmînî
  17. וַיִּשָּׂ֣א And when he had lifted up nāśāʾ עֵינָ֗יו his eyes, ʿayin וַיַּ֛רְא he saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הָאִ֥ישׁ man ʾîš הָֽאֹרֵ֖חַ a wayfaring ʾāraḥ בִּרְחֹ֣ב in the street rĕḥōb הָעִ֑יר of the city: ʿîr וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said, ʾāmar הָאִ֧ישׁ man ʾîš הַזָּקֵ֛ן and the old zāqēn אָ֥נָה Whither ʾān תֵלֵ֖ךְ goest hālak וּמֵאַ֥יִן thou? and whence ʾayin תָּבֽוֹא׃ comest thou? bôʾ
  18. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֵלָ֗יו unto ʾēl עֹֽבְרִ֨ים passing ʿābar אֲנַ֜חְנוּ him, We ʾănaḥnû מִבֵּֽית לֶ֣חֶם from Bethlehem-judah bêt leḥem יְהוּדָה֮ yĕhûdâ עַד toward ʿad יַרְכְּתֵ֣י the side yĕrēkâ הַר of mount har אֶפְרַיִם֒ Ephraim; ʾeprayim מִשָּׁ֣ם from thence šām אָנֹ֔כִי I: ʾānōkî וָֽאֵלֵ֕ךְ and I went hālak עַד to ʿad בֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם Bethlehem-judah, bêt leḥem יְהוּדָ֑ה yĕhûdâ וְאֶת ʾēt בֵּ֤ית to the house bayit יְהוָה֙ of the Lord; yĕhōwâ אֲנִ֣י but I ʾănî הֹלֵ֔ךְ going hālak וְאֵ֣ין and there no ʾayin אִ֔ישׁ man ʾîš מְאַסֵּ֥ף that receiveth ʾāsap אוֹתִ֖י ʾēt הַבָּֽיְתָה׃ me to house. bayit
  19. וְגַם both gam תֶּ֤בֶן straw teben גַּם and gam מִסְפּוֹא֙ provender mispôʾ יֵ֣שׁ Yet there is yēš לַֽחֲמוֹרֵ֔ינוּ for our asses; ḥămôr וְ֠גַם also gam לֶ֣חֶם bread leḥem וָיַ֤יִן and wine yayin יֶשׁ and there is yēš לִי֙ וְלַֽאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ for me, and for thy handmaid, ʾāmâ וְלַנַּ֖עַר and for the young man naʿar עִם with ʿim עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ thy servants: ʿebed אֵ֥ין no ʾayin מַחְס֖וֹר want maḥsôr כָּל of any kōl דָּבָֽר׃ thing. dābār
  20. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said, ʾāmar הָאִ֤ישׁ man ʾîš הַזָּקֵן֙ And the old zāqēn שָׁל֣וֹם Peace šālôm לָ֔ךְ רַ֥ק with thee; howsoever raq כָּל all kōl מַחְסֽוֹרְךָ֖ thy wants maḥsôr עָלָ֑י upon ʿal רַ֥ק me; only raq בָּֽרְח֖וֹב in the street. rĕḥōb אַל not ʾal תָּלַֽן׃ lodge lûn
  21. וַיְבִיאֵ֣הוּ So he brought bôʾ לְבֵית֔וֹ him into his house, bayit וַיָּ֖בָוֹל and gave provender bālal לַֽחֲמוֹרִ֑ים unto the asses: ḥămôr וַֽיִּרְחֲצוּ֙ and they washed rāḥaṣ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם their feet, regel וַיֹּֽאכְל֖וּ and did eat ʾākal וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃ and drink. šātâ
  22. הֵמָּה֮ as they hēm מֵֽיטִיבִ֣ים merry, yāṭab אֶת ʾēt לִבָּם֒ were making their hearts lēb וְהִנֵּה֩ behold, hinnē אַנְשֵׁ֨י the men ʾĕnôš הָעִ֜יר of the city, ʿîr אַנְשֵׁ֣י certain ʾĕnôš בְנֵֽי sons bēn בְלִיַּ֗עַל of Belial, bĕliyyaʿal נָסַ֙בּוּ֙ beset sābab אֶת round about, ʾēt הַבַּ֔יִת the house bayit מִֽתְדַּפְּקִ֖ים beat dāpaq עַל at ʿal הַדָּ֑לֶת the door, delet וַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ and spake ʾāmar אֶל to ʾēl הָ֠אִישׁ man, ʾîš בַּ֣עַל the master baʿal הַבַּ֤יִת of the house, bayit הַזָּקֵן֙ the old zāqēn לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הוֹצֵ֗א Bring forth yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt הָאִ֛ישׁ the man ʾîš אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בָּ֥א came bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl בֵּֽיתְךָ֖ thine house, bayit וְנֵֽדָעֶֽנּוּ׃ that we may know him. yādaʿ
  23. וַיֵּצֵ֣א went out yāṣāʾ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם unto ʾēl הָאִישׁ֙ And the man, ʾîš בַּ֣עַל the master baʿal הַבַּ֔יִת of the house, bayit וַיֹּ֣אמֶר them, and said ʾāmar אֲלֵהֶ֔ם unto ʾēl אַל them, Nay, ʾal אַחַ֖י my brethren, ʾāḥ אַל ʾal תָּרֵ֣עוּ do not wickedly; rāʿaʿ נָ֑א I pray you, nāʾ אַֽ֠חֲרֵי seeing that ʾaḥar אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer בָּ֞א is come bôʾ הָאִ֤ישׁ man ʾîš הַזֶּה֙ this ze אַל into ʾēl בֵּיתִ֔י mine house, bayit אַֽל not ʾal תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ do ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt הַנְּבָלָ֥ה folly. nĕbālâ הַזֹּֽאת׃ this zōt
  24. הִנֵּה֩ Behold, hinnē בִתִּ֨י my daughter bat הַבְּתוּלָ֜ה a maiden, bĕtûlâ וּפִֽילַגְשֵׁ֗הוּ and his concubine; pîlegeš אוֹצִֽיאָה them I will bring out yāṣāʾ נָּ֤א now, nāʾ אוֹתָם֙ ʾēt וְעַנּ֣וּ and humble ʿānâ אוֹתָ֔ם ʾēt וַֽעֲשׂ֣וּ ye them, and do ʿāśâ לָהֶ֔ם הַטּ֖וֹב good ṭôb בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם with them what seemeth ʿayin וְלָאִ֤ישׁ man ʾîš הַזֶּה֙ unto you: but unto this ze לֹ֣א not lōʾ תַֽעֲשׂ֔וּ do ʿāśâ דְּבַ֖ר a thing. dābār הַנְּבָלָ֥ה vile nĕbālâ הַזֹּֽאת׃ so zōt
  25. וְלֹֽא not lōʾ אָב֤וּ would ʾābâ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ But the men ʾĕnôš לִשְׁמֹ֣עַֽ hearken šāmaʿ ל֔וֹ וַיַּֽחֲזֵ֤ק took ḥāzaq הָאִישׁ֙ to him: so the man ʾîš בְּפִ֣ילַגְשׁ֔וֹ his concubine, pîlegeš וַיֹּצֵ֥א and brought yāṣāʾ אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם unto ʾēl הַח֑וּץ her forth ḥûṣ וַיֵּֽדְע֣וּ them; and they knew yādaʿ א֠וֹתָהּ ʾēt וַיִּֽתְעַלְּלוּ her, and abused ʿālal בָ֤הּ כָּל her all kōl הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙ the night layil עַד until ʿad הַבֹּ֔קֶר the morning: bōqer וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֖וּהָ they let her go. šālaḥ בַּֽעֲל֥וֹת began to spring, ʿālâ הַשָּֽׁחַר׃ and when the day šaḥar
  26. וַתָּבֹ֥א Then came bôʾ הָֽאִשָּׁ֖ה the woman ʾiššâ לִפְנ֣וֹת in the dawning pānâ הַבֹּ֑קֶר of the day, bōqer וַתִּפֹּ֞ל and fell down nāpal פֶּ֧תַח at the door petaḥ בֵּית house bayit הָאִ֛ישׁ of the man's ʾîš אֲשֶׁר where ʾăšer אֲדוֹנֶ֥יהָ her lord ʾādôn שָּׁ֖ם šām עַד till ʿad הָאֽוֹר׃ it was light. ʾôr
  27. וַיָּ֨קָם rose up qûm אֲדֹנֶ֜יהָ And her lord ʾādôn בַּבֹּ֗קֶר in the morning, bōqer וַיִּפְתַּח֙ and opened pātaḥ דַּלְת֣וֹת the doors delet הַבַּ֔יִת of the house, bayit וַיֵּצֵ֖א and went out yāṣāʾ לָלֶ֣כֶת to go hālak לְדַרְכּ֑וֹ his way: derek וְהִנֵּ֧ה and, behold, hinnē הָֽאִשָּׁ֣ה the woman ʾiššâ פִֽילַגְשׁ֗וֹ his concubine pîlegeš נֹפֶ֙לֶת֙ was fallen down nāpal פֶּ֣תַח the door petaḥ הַבַּ֔יִת of the house, bayit וְיָדֶ֖יהָ and her hands yād עַל upon ʿal הַסַּֽף׃ the threshold. sap
  28. וַיֹּ֧אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֵלֶ֛יהָ unto ʾēl ק֥וּמִי her, Up, qûm וְנֵלֵ֖כָה and let us be going. hālak וְאֵ֣ין But none ʾayin עֹנֶ֑ה answered. ʿānâ וַיִּקָּחֶ֙הָ֙ Then the man took her lāqaḥ עַֽל upon ʿal הַחֲמ֔וֹר an ass, ḥămôr וַיָּ֣קָם rose up, qûm הָאִ֔ישׁ and the man ʾîš וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ and gat hālak לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ him unto his place. māqôm
  29. וַיָּבֹ֣א And when he was come bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl בֵּית֗וֹ his house, bayit וַיִּקַּ֤ח he took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt הַֽמַּאֲכֶ֙לֶת֙ a knife, maʾăkelet וַיַּֽחֲזֵ֣ק and laid hold ḥāzaq בְּפִֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ on his concubine, pîlegeš וַֽיְנַתְּחֶ֙הָ֙ and divided nātaḥ לַֽעֲצָמֶ֔יהָ her, with her bones, ʿeṣem לִשְׁנֵ֥ים into twelve šĕnayim עָשָׂ֖ר ʿāśār נְתָחִ֑ים pieces, nētaḥ וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֔הָ and sent šālaḥ בְּכֹ֖ל her into all kōl גְּב֥וּל the coasts gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl
  30. וְהָיָ֣ה And it was so, hāyâ כָל that all kōl הָֽרֹאֶ֗ה that saw rāʾâ וְאָמַר֙ it said, ʾāmar לֹֽא There was no lōʾ נִהְיְתָ֤ה done hāyâ וְלֹֽא nor lōʾ נִרְאֲתָה֙ seen rāʾâ כָּזֹ֔את such deed zōt לְמִיּ֞וֹם from the day yôm עֲל֤וֹת came up ʿālâ בְּנֵֽי that the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl מֵאֶ֣רֶץ out of the land ʾereṣ מִצְרַ֔יִם of Egypt miṣrayim עַ֖ד unto ʿad הַיּ֣וֹם day: yôm הַזֶּ֑ה this ze שִֽׂימוּ consider śûm לָכֶ֥ם עָלֶ֖יהָ of ʿal עֻ֥צוּ it, take advice, ʿûṣ וְדַבֵּֽרוּ׃ and speak dābar
