וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח sent šālaḥ יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בִּן the son bēn נ֠וּן of Nun nûn מִֽן out of min הַשִּׁטִּ֞ים Shittim šiṭṭîm שְׁנַֽיִם two šĕnayim אֲנָשִׁ֤ים men ʾîš מְרַגְּלִים֙ to spy rāgal חֶ֣רֶשׁ secretly, ḥereš לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar לְכ֛וּ Go hālak רְא֥וּ view rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הָאָ֖רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וְאֶת ʾēt יְרִיח֑וֹ even Jericho. yĕrîḥô וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ And they went, hālak וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ and came into bôʾ בֵּית bayit אִשָּׁ֥ה house, ʾiššâ זוֹנָ֛ה an harlot's zānâ וּשְׁמָ֥הּ named šēm רָחָ֖ב Rahab, rāḥāb וַיִּשְׁכְּבוּ and lodged šākab שָֽׁמָּה׃ there. šām

וַיֵּ֣אָמַ֔ר And it was told ʾāmar לְמֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek יְרִיח֖וֹ of Jericho, yĕrîḥô לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֣ה Behold, hinnē אֲ֠נָשִׁים men ʾĕnôš בָּ֣אוּ there came bôʾ הֵ֧נָּה in hither hēnnâ הַלַּ֛יְלָה to night layil מִבְּנֵ֥י of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl לַחְפֹּ֥ר to search out ḥāpar אֶת ʾēt הָאָֽרֶץ׃ the country. ʾereṣ

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ sent šālaḥ מֶ֣לֶךְ And the king melek יְרִיח֔וֹ of Jericho yĕrîḥô אֶל unto ʾēl רָחָ֖ב Rahab, rāḥāb לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar ה֠וֹצִיאִי Bring forth yāṣāʾ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֨ים the men ʾîš הַבָּאִ֤ים that are come bôʾ אֵלַ֙יִךְ֙ to ʾēl אֲשֶׁר thee, which ʾăšer בָּ֣אוּ are entered bôʾ לְבֵיתֵ֔ךְ into thine house: bayit כִּ֛י for kî לַחְפֹּ֥ר to search out ḥāpar אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָאָ֖רֶץ the country. ʾereṣ בָּֽאוּ׃ they be come bôʾ

וַתִּקַּ֧ח took lāqaḥ הָֽאִשָּׁ֛ה And the woman ʾiššâ אֶת ʾēt שְׁנֵ֥י the two šĕnayim הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים men, ʾîš וַֽתִּצְפְּנ֑וֹ and hid ṣāpan וַתֹּ֣אמֶר׀ them, and said ʾāmar כֵּ֗ן thus, kēn בָּ֤אוּ There came bôʾ אֵלַי֙ unto ʾēl הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים men ʾîš וְלֹ֥א not lōʾ יָדַ֖עְתִּי me, but I wist yādaʿ מֵאַ֥יִן whence ʾayin הֵֽמָּה׃ they hēm

וַיְהִ֨י And it came to pass hāyâ הַשַּׁ֜עַר of the gate, šaʿar לִסְגּ֗וֹר of shutting sāgar בַּחֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ when it was dark, ḥōšek וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁ֣ים that the men ʾîš יָצָ֔אוּ went out: yāṣāʾ לֹ֣א not: lōʾ יָדַ֔עְתִּי I wot yādaʿ אָ֥נָה whither ʾān הָֽלְכ֖וּ went hālak הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים the men ʾîš רִדְפ֥וּ pursue rādap מַהֵ֛ר them quickly; mahēr אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם after ʾaḥar כִּ֥י for kî תַשִּׂיגֽוּם׃ ye shall overtake them. nāśag

וְהִ֖יא But she hûʾ הֶֽעֱלָ֣תַם had brought them up ʿālâ הַגָּ֑גָה to the roof gāg וַֽתִּטְמְנֵם֙ of the house, and hid ṭāman בְּפִשְׁתֵּ֣י of flax, pište הָעֵ֔ץ them with the stalks ʿēṣ הָֽעֲרֻכ֥וֹת which she had laid in order ʿārak לָ֖הּ עַל upon ʿal הַגָּֽג׃ the roof. gāg

וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים And the men ʾîš רָֽדְפ֤וּ pursued rādap אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ after ʾaḥar דֶּ֣רֶךְ them the way derek הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן to Jordan yardēn עַ֖ל unto ʿal הַֽמַּעְבְּר֑וֹת the fords: maʿăbār וְהַשַּׁ֣עַר the gate. šaʿar סָגָ֔רוּ they shut sāgar אַֽחֲרֵ֕י and as soon as ʾaḥar כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר ʾăšer יָֽצְא֥וּ them were gone out, yāṣāʾ הָרֹֽדְפִ֖ים they which pursued rādap אַֽחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ after ʾaḥar

וְהֵ֖מָּה they hēm טֶ֣רֶם And before ṭerem יִשְׁכָּב֑וּן were laid down, šākab וְהִ֛יא she hûʾ עָֽלְתָ֥ה came up ʿālâ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם unto ʿal עַל them upon ʿal הַגָּֽג׃ the roof; gāg

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ And she said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים the men, ʾîš יָדַ֕עְתִּי I know yādaʿ כִּֽי that kî נָתַ֧ן hath given nātan יְהוָ֛ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לָכֶ֖ם אֶת you ʾēt הָאָ֑רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וְכִֽי and that kî נָפְלָ֤ה is fallen nāpal אֵֽימַתְכֶם֙ your terror ʾêmâ עָלֵ֔ינוּ upon ʿal וְכִ֥י us, and that kî נָמֹ֛גוּ faint mûg כָּל all kōl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֥י the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֖רֶץ of the land ʾereṣ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃ because of you. pānîm

כִּ֣י For kî שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ we have heard šāmaʿ אֵ֠ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר how ʾăšer הוֹבִ֨ישׁ dried up yābēš יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt מֵ֤י the water mayim יַם sea yām סוּף֙ of the Red sûp מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם for you, pānîm בְּצֵֽאתְכֶ֖ם when ye came out yāṣāʾ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם of Egypt; miṣrayim וַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר and what ʾăšer עֲשִׂיתֶ֡ם ye did ʿāśâ לִשְׁנֵי֩ unto the two šĕnayim מַלְכֵ֨י kings melek הָֽאֱמֹרִ֜י of the Amorites, ʾĕmōrî אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer בְּעֵ֤בֶר on the other side ʿēber הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ Jordan, yardēn לְסִיחֹ֣ן Sihon sîḥôn וּלְע֔וֹג and Og, ʿôg אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom ʾăšer הֶֽחֱרַמְתֶּ֖ם ye utterly destroyed. ḥāram אוֹתָֽם׃ ʾēt

וַנִּשְׁמַע֙ And as soon as we had heard šāmaʿ וַיִּמַּ֣ס did melt, māsas לְבָבֵ֔נוּ our hearts lēbāb וְלֹא neither lōʾ קָ֨מָה did there remain qûm ע֥וֹד any more ʿôd ר֛וּחַ courage rûaḥ בְּאִ֖ישׁ in any man, ʾîš מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם because pānîm כִּ֚י of you: for kî יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם your God, ʾĕlōhîm ה֤וּא he hûʾ אֱלֹהִים֙ God ʾĕlōhîm בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם in heaven šāmayim מִמַּ֔עַל above, maʿal וְעַל and in ʿal הָאָ֖רֶץ earth ʾereṣ מִתָּֽחַת׃ beneath. taḥat

וְעַתָּ֗ה Now ʿattâ הִשָּֽׁבְעוּ you, swear šābaʿ נָ֥א therefore, I pray nāʾ לִי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה unto me by the Lord, yĕhōwâ כִּֽי since kî עָשִׂ֥יתִי I have shewed ʿāśâ עִמָּכֶ֖ם ʿim חָ֑סֶד you kindness, ḥēsēd וַֽעֲשִׂיתֶ֨ם shew ʿāśâ גַּם will also gam אַתֶּ֜ם that ye ʾattâ עִם unto ʿim בֵּ֤ית house, bayit אָבִי֙ my father's ʾāb חֶ֔סֶד kindness ḥēsēd וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם and give nātan לִ֖י א֥וֹת token: ʾôt אֱמֶֽת׃ me a true ʾemet

וְהַֽחֲיִתֶ֞ם And ye will save alive ḥāyâ אֶת ʾēt אָבִ֣י my father, ʾāb וְאֶת ʾēt אִמִּ֗י and my mother, ʾēm וְאֶת ʾēt אַחַי֙ and my brethren, ʾāḥ וְאֶת ʾēt אַחְוֹתַי and my sisters, ʾāḥôt וְאֵ֖ת ʾēt כָּל and all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer לָהֶ֑ם וְהִצַּלְתֶּ֥ם they have, and deliver nāṣal אֶת ʾēt נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ our lives nepeš מִמָּֽוֶת׃ from death. māwet

וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ answered ʾāmar לָ֣הּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים And the men ʾîš נַפְשֵׁ֤נוּ her, Our life nepeš תַחְתֵּיכֶם֙ for taḥat לָמ֔וּת yours, mût אִ֚ם if ʾim לֹ֣א not lōʾ תַגִּ֔ידוּ ye utter nāgad אֶת ʾēt דְּבָרֵ֖נוּ our business. dābār זֶ֑ה this ze וְהָיָ֗ה And it shall be, hāyâ בְּתֵת hath given nātan יְהוָ֥ה when the Lord yĕhōwâ לָ֙נוּ֙ אֶת us ʾēt הָאָ֔רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וְעָשִׂ֥ינוּ that we will deal ʿāśâ עִמָּ֖ךְ with thee. ʿim חֶ֥סֶד kindly ḥēsēd וֶֽאֱמֶֽת׃ and truly ʾemet

וַתּֽוֹרִדֵ֥ם Then she let them down yārad בַּחֶ֖בֶל by a cord ḥebel בְּעַ֣ד through bĕʿad הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן the window: ḥallôn כִּ֤י for kî בֵיתָהּ֙ her house bayit בְּקִ֣יר upon the town qîr הַֽחוֹמָ֔ה wall, ḥômâ וּבַֽחוֹמָ֖ה upon the wall. ḥômâ הִ֥יא and she hûʾ יוֹשָֽׁבֶת׃ dwelt yāšab

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר And she said ʾāmar לָהֶם֙ הָהָ֣רָה you to the mountain, har לֵּ֔כוּ unto them, Get hālak פֶּֽן lest pēn יִפְגְּע֥וּ meet pāgaʿ בָכֶ֖ם הָרֹֽדְפִ֑ים the pursuers rādap וְנַחְבֵּתֶ֨ם you; and hide yourselves ḥābâ שָׁ֜מָּה there šām שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת three šālôš יָמִ֗ים days, yôm עַ֚ד until ʿad שׁ֣וֹב be returned: šûb הָרֹֽדְפִ֔ים the pursuers rādap וְאַחַ֖ר and afterward ʾaḥar תֵּֽלְכ֥וּ may ye go hālak לְדַרְכְּכֶֽם׃ your way. derek

וַיֹּֽאמְר֥וּ said ʾāmar אֵלֶ֖יהָ unto ʾēl הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים And the men ʾîš נְקִיִּ֣ם blameless nāqî אֲנַ֔חְנוּ her, We ʾănaḥnû מִשְּׁבֻֽעָתֵ֥ךְ of this thine oath šĕbûʿâ הַזֶּ֖ה ze אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃ thou hast made us swear. šābaʿ

הִנֵּ֛ה Behold, hinnē אֲנַ֥חְנוּ we ʾănaḥnû בָאִ֖ים come bôʾ בָּאָ֑רֶץ into the land, ʾereṣ אֶת ʾēt תִּקְוַ֡ת line tiqwâ חוּט֩ thread ḥûṭ הַשָּׁנִ֨י of scarlet šānî הַזֶּ֜ה this ze תִּקְשְׁרִ֗י thou shalt bind qāšar בַּֽחַלּוֹן֙ in the window ḥallôn אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer הֽוֹרַדְתֵּ֣נוּ thou didst let us down by: yārad ב֔וֹ וְאֶת ʾēt אָבִ֨יךְ thy father, ʾāb וְאֶת ʾēt אִמֵּ֜ךְ and thy mother, ʾēm וְאֶת ʾēt אַחַ֗יִךְ and thy brethren, ʾāḥ וְאֵת֙ ʾēt כָּל and all kōl בֵּ֣ית household, bayit אָבִ֔יךְ thy father's ʾāb תַּֽאַסְפִ֥י and thou shalt bring ʾāsap אֵלַ֖יִךְ unto thee. ʾēl הַבָּֽיְתָה׃ home bayit

וְהָיָ֡ה And it shall be, hāyâ כֹּ֣ל kōl אֲשֶׁר whosoever ʾăšer יֵצֵא֩ shall go out yāṣāʾ מִדַּלְתֵ֨י of the doors delet בֵיתֵ֧ךְ׀ of thy house bayit הַח֛וּצָה into the street, ḥûṣ דָּמ֥וֹ his blood dām בְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ upon his head, rōš וַֽאֲנַ֣חְנוּ and we ʾănaḥnû נְקִיִּ֑ם guiltless: nāqî וְ֠כֹל and whosoever kōl אֲשֶׁ֨ר ʾăšer יִֽהְיֶ֤ה shall be hāyâ אִתָּךְ֙ with ʾēt בַּבַּ֔יִת thee in the house, bayit דָּמ֣וֹ his blood dām בְרֹאשֵׁ֔נוּ on our head, rōš אִם if ʾim יָ֖ד hand yād תִּֽהְיֶה be upon him. hāyâ בּֽוֹ׃

וְאִם And if ʾim תַּגִּ֖ידִי thou utter nāgad אֶת ʾēt דְּבָרֵ֣נוּ our business, dābār זֶ֑ה this ze וְהָיִ֣ינוּ then we will be hāyâ נְקִיִּ֔ם quit nāqî מִשְּׁבֻֽעָתֵ֖ךְ of thine oath šĕbûʿâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃ thou hast made us to swear. šābaʿ

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ And she said, ʾāmar כְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֣ם According unto your words, dābār כֶּן so kēn ה֔וּא it. hûʾ וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵ֖ם And she sent them away, šālaḥ וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ and they departed: hālak וַתִּקְשֹׁ֛ר and she bound qāšar אֶת ʾēt תִּקְוַ֥ת line tiqwâ הַשָּׁנִ֖י the scarlet šānî בַּֽחַלּֽוֹן׃ in the window. ḥallôn

וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ And they went, hālak וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ and came bôʾ הָהָ֔רָה unto the mountain, har וַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּ and abode yāšab שָׁם֙ there šām שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת three šālôš יָמִ֔ים days, yôm עַד until ʿad שָׁ֖בוּ were returned: šûb הָרֹֽדְפִ֑ים the pursuers rādap וַיְבַקְשׁ֧וּ sought bāqaš הָרֹֽדְפִ֛ים and the pursuers rādap בְּכָל throughout all kōl הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ the way, derek וְלֹ֥א not. lōʾ מָצָֽאוּ׃ but found māṣāʾ

וַיָּשֻׁ֜בוּ returned, šûb שְׁנֵ֤י So the two šĕnayim הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ men ʾîš וַיֵּֽרְד֣וּ and descended yārad מֵֽהָהָ֔ר from the mountain, har וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֙ and passed over, ʿābar וַיָּבֹ֔אוּ and came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בִּן the son bēn נ֑וּן of Nun, nûn וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ and told sāpar ל֔וֹ אֵ֥ת him ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַמֹּֽצְא֖וֹת that befell them: māṣāʾ אוֹתָֽם׃ ʾēt

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ And they said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ כִּֽי Truly kî נָתַ֧ן hath delivered nātan יְהוָ֛ה the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיָדֵ֖נוּ into our hands yād אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ the land; ʾereṣ וְגַם for even gam נָמֹ֛גוּ do faint mûg כָּל all kōl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֥י the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֖רֶץ of the country ʾereṣ מִפָּנֵֽינוּ׃ because of us. pānîm
