அப்பொழுது கப்பற்காரர் பயந்து, அவனவன் தன்தன் தேவனை நோக்கி வேண்டுதல்செய்து, பாரத்தை லேசாக்கும்படிக் கப்பலில் இருந்த சரக்குகளைச் சமுத்திரத்தில் எறிந்துவிட்டார்கள்; யோனாவோவென்றால் கப்பலின் கீழ்த்தட்டில் இறங்கிபோய்ப் படுத்துக்கொண்டு, அயர்ந்த நித்திரைபண்ணினான்.

அப்பொழுது கப்பற்காரர்கள் பயந்து, அவனவன் தன்தன் தெய்வங்களை நோக்கி வேண்டுதல்செய்து, பாரத்தைக் குறைப்பதற்காக கப்பலில் இருந்த சரக்குகளைக் கடலில் எறிந்துவிட்டார்கள்; யோனாவோ கப்பலின் கீழ்த்தளத்தில் இறங்கிப்போய்ப் படுத்துக்கொண்டு, ஆழ்ந்து தூங்கினான்.

பணியாட்கள் படகை மூழ்குவதிலிருந்து காப்பாற்ற அதன் கனத்தைக் குறைக்க விரும்பினார்கள். எனவே அவர்கள் கடலுக்குள் சரக்குகளைத் தூக்கி எறிந்தனர். படகோட்டிகள் மிகவும் பயந்தார்கள். ஒவ்வொருவரும் தனது தேவனிடம் ஜெபம் செய்யத் தொடங்கினார்கள். யோனா படகின் கீழ்த்தளத்திற்குச் சென்று படுத்து தூங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தான்.
