  1. וְהָֽרָעָ֖ב And the famine rāʿāb כָּבֵ֥ד sore kābēd בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ in the land. ʾereṣ
  2. וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass, hāyâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר when ʾăšer כִּלּוּ֙ they had eaten up kālâ לֶֽאֱכֹ֣ל ʾākal אֶת ʾēt הַשֶּׁ֔בֶר the corn šeber אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer הֵבִ֖יאוּ they had brought out bôʾ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם of Egypt, miṣrayim וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶם֙ unto ʾēl אֲבִיהֶ֔ם their father ʾāb שֻׁ֖בוּ them, Go again, šûb שִׁבְרוּ buy šābar לָ֥נוּ מְעַט us a little mĕʿaṭ אֹֽכֶל׃ food. ʾōkel
  3. וַיֹּ֧אמֶר spake ʾāmar אֵלָ֛יו unto ʾēl יְהוּדָ֖ה And Judah yĕhûdâ לֵאמֹ֑ר him, saying, ʾāmar הָעֵ֣ד did solemnly ʿûd הֵעִד֩ protest ʿûd בָּ֨נוּ הָאִ֤ישׁ The man ʾîš לֵאמֹר֙ unto us, saying, ʾāmar לֹֽא Ye shall not lōʾ תִרְא֣וּ see rāʾâ פָנַ֔י my face, pānîm בִּלְתִּ֖י except biltî אֲחִיכֶ֥ם your brother ʾāḥ אִתְּכֶֽם׃ with you. ʾēt
  4. אִם If ʾim יֶשְׁךָ֛ thou wilt yēš מְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ send šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt אָחִ֖ינוּ our brother ʾāḥ אִתָּ֑נוּ with ʾēt נֵֽרְדָ֕ה us, we will go down yārad וְנִשְׁבְּרָ֥ה and buy šābar לְךָ֖ אֹֽכֶל׃ thee food: ʾōkel
  5. וְאִם But if ʾim אֵֽינְךָ֥ thou wilt not ʾayin מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ send šālaḥ לֹ֣א we will not lōʾ נֵרֵ֑ד go down: yārad כִּֽי for הָאִ֞ישׁ the man ʾîš אָמַ֤ר said ʾāmar אֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙ unto ʾēl לֹֽא us, Ye shall not lōʾ תִרְא֣וּ see rāʾâ פָנַ֔י my face, pānîm בִּלְתִּ֖י except biltî אֲחִיכֶ֥ם your brother ʾāḥ אִתְּכֶֽם׃ with you. ʾēt
  6. וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ said, ʾāmar יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל And Israel yiśrāʾēl לָמָ֥ה Wherefore הֲרֵֽעֹתֶ֖ם dealt ye ill rāʿaʿ לִ֑י לְהַגִּ֣יד with me, to tell nāgad לָאִ֔ישׁ the man ʾîš הַע֥וֹד whether ye had yet ʿôd לָכֶ֖ם אָֽח׃ a brother? ʾāḥ
  7. וַיֹּֽאמְר֡וּ And they said, ʾāmar שָׁא֣וֹל asked šāʾal שָֽׁאַל us straitly šāʾal הָ֠אִישׁ The man ʾîš לָ֣נוּ וּלְמֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֜נוּ of our state, and of our kindred, môledet לֵאמֹ֗ר saying, ʾāmar הַע֨וֹד yet ʿôd אֲבִיכֶ֥ם your father ʾāb חַי֙ alive? ḥay הֲיֵ֣שׁ have ye yēš לָכֶ֣ם אָ֔ח brother? ʾāḥ וַנַ֨גֶּד and we told nāgad ל֔וֹ עַל him according to ʿal פִּ֖י the tenor pe הַדְּבָרִ֣ים words: dābār הָאֵ֑לֶּה of these ʾēlle הֲיָד֣וֹעַ could we certainly yādaʿ נֵדַ֔ע know yādaʿ כִּ֣י that יֹאמַ֔ר he would say, ʾāmar הוֹרִ֖ידוּ down? yārad אֶת ʾēt אֲחִיכֶֽם׃ Bring your brother ʾāḥ
  8. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוּדָ֜ה And Judah yĕhûdâ אֶל unto ʾēl יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אָבִ֗יו his father, ʾāb שִׁלְחָ֥ה Send šālaḥ הַנַּ֛עַר the lad naʿar אִתִּ֖י with ʾēt וְנָק֣וּמָה me, and we will arise qûm וְנֵלֵ֑כָה and go; hālak וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ that we may live, ḥāyâ וְלֹ֣א and not lōʾ נָמ֔וּת die, mût גַּם both gam אֲנַ֥חְנוּ we, ʾănaḥnû גַם and gam אַתָּ֖ה thou, ʾattâ גַּם also gam טַפֵּֽנוּ׃ our little ones. ṭap
  9. אָֽנֹכִי֙ I ʾānōkî אֶֽעֶרְבֶ֔נּוּ will be surety ʿārab מִיָּדִ֖י for him; of my hand yād תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נּוּ shalt thou require bāqaš אִם him: if ʾim לֹ֨א him not lōʾ הֲבִֽיאֹתִ֤יו I bring bôʾ אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ unto ʾēl וְהִצַּגְתִּ֣יו thee, and set yāṣag לְפָנֶ֔יךָ him before thee, pānîm וְחָטָ֥אתִֽי then let me bear the blame ḥāṭāʾ לְךָ֖ כָּל kōl הַיָּמִֽים׃ for ever: yôm
  10. כִּ֖י For לוּלֵ֣א except lûlēʾ הִתְמַהְמָ֑הְנוּ we had lingered, māhah כִּֽי surely עַתָּ֥ה now ʿattâ שַׁ֖בְנוּ we had returned šûb זֶ֥ה this ze פַֽעֲמָֽיִם׃ second time. paʿam
  11. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲלֵהֶ֜ם unto ʾēl יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אֲבִיהֶ֗ם And their father ʾāb אִם them, If ʾim כֵּ֣ן׀ so kēn אֵפוֹא֮ now, ʾēpô זֹ֣את this; zōt עֲשׂוּ֒ do ʿāśâ קְח֞וּ take lāqaḥ מִזִּמְרַ֤ת of the best fruits zimrâ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ in the land ʾereṣ בִּכְלֵיכֶ֔ם in your vessels, kĕlî וְהוֹרִ֥ידוּ and carry down yārad לָאִ֖ישׁ the man ʾĕnôš מִנְחָ֑ה a present, minḥâ מְעַ֤ט a little mĕʿaṭ צֳרִי֙ balm, ṣĕrî וּמְעַ֣ט and a little mĕʿaṭ דְּבַ֔שׁ honey, dĕbaš נְכֹ֣את spices, nĕkōt וָלֹ֔ט and myrrh, lōṭ בָּטְנִ֖ים nuts, bōṭen וּשְׁקֵדִֽים׃ and almonds: šāqēd
  12. וְכֶ֥סֶף money kesep מִשְׁנֶ֖ה double mišne קְח֣וּ And take lāqaḥ בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם in your hand; yād וְאֶת ʾēt הַכֶּ֜סֶף and the money kesep הַמּוּשָׁ֨ב that was brought again šûb בְּפִ֤י in the mouth pe אַמְתְּחֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ of your sacks, ʾamtaḥat תָּשִׁ֣יבוּ carry again šûb בְיֶדְכֶ֔ם in your hand; yād אוּלַ֥י peradventure ʾûlay מִשְׁגֶּ֖ה an oversight: mišge הֽוּא׃ it hûʾ
  13. וְאֶת ʾēt אֲחִיכֶ֖ם also your brother, ʾāḥ קָ֑חוּ Take lāqaḥ וְק֖וּמוּ and arise, qûm שׁ֥וּבוּ go again šûb אֶל unto ʾēl הָאִֽישׁ׃ the man: ʾîš
  14. וְאֵ֣ל And God ʾēl שַׁדַּ֗י Almighty šadday יִתֵּ֨ן give nātan לָכֶ֤ם רַֽחֲמִים֙ you mercy raḥam לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm הָאִ֔ישׁ the man, ʾîš וְשִׁלַּ֥ח that he may send away šālaḥ לָכֶ֛ם אֶת ʾēt אֲחִיכֶ֥ם brother, ʾāḥ אַחֵ֖ר your other ʾaḥēr וְאֶת ʾēt בִּנְיָמִ֑ין and Benjamin. binyāmîn וַֽאֲנִ֕י I ʾănî כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר If ʾăšer שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי be bereaved šākōl שָׁכָֽלְתִּי׃ I am bereaved. šākōl
  15. וַיִּקְח֤וּ took lāqaḥ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ And the men ʾîš אֶת ʾēt הַמִּנְחָ֣ה present, minḥâ הַזֹּ֔את that zōt וּמִשְׁנֶה double mišne כֶּ֛סֶף money kesep לָֽקְח֥וּ and they took lāqaḥ בְיָדָ֖ם in their hand, yād וְאֶת ʾēt בִּנְיָמִ֑ן and Benjamin; binyāmîn וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ and rose up, qûm וַיֵּֽרְד֣וּ and went down yārad מִצְרַ֔יִם to Egypt, miṣrayim וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ and stood ʿāmad לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm יוֹסֵֽף׃ Joseph. yôsēp
  16. וַיַּ֨רְא saw rāʾâ יוֹסֵ֣ף And when Joseph yôsēp אִתָּם֮ with ʾēt אֶת ʾēt בִּנְיָמִין֒ Benjamin binyāmîn וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ them, he said ʾāmar לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer עַל to the ruler of ʿal בֵּית֔וֹ his house, bayit הָבֵ֥א Bring bôʾ אֶת ʾēt הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים men ʾĕnôš הַבָּ֑יְתָה home, bayit וּטְבֹ֤חַ and slay, ṭābaḥ טֶ֙בַח֙ ṭebaḥ וְהָכֵ֔ן and make ready; kûn כִּ֥י for אִתִּ֛י with ʾēt יֹֽאכְל֥וּ shall dine ʾākal הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים men ʾĕnôš בַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃ me at noon. ṣōhar
  17. וַיַּ֣עַשׂ did ʿāśâ הָאִ֔ישׁ And the man ʾîš כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר as ʾăšer אָמַ֣ר bade; ʾāmar יוֹסֵ֑ף Joseph yôsēp וַיָּבֵ֥א brought bôʾ הָאִ֛ישׁ and the man ʾîš אֶת ʾēt הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים the men ʾîš בֵּ֥יתָה house. bayit יוֹסֵֽף׃ into Joseph's yôsēp
  18. וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ were afraid, yārēʾ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים And the men ʾîš כִּ֣י because הֽוּבְאוּ֮ they were brought bôʾ בֵּ֣ית house; bayit יוֹסֵף֒ into Joseph's yôsēp וַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ and they said, ʾāmar עַל ʿal דְּבַ֤ר Because of dābār הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ the money kesep הַשָּׁ֤ב that was returned šûb בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ in our sacks ʾamtaḥat בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה at the first time tĕḥillâ אֲנַ֖חְנוּ are we ʾănaḥnû מֽוּבָאִ֑ים brought in; bôʾ לְהִתְגֹּלֵ֤ל that he may seek occasion gālal עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ against ʿal וּלְהִתְנַפֵּ֣ל us, and fall nāpal עָלֵ֔ינוּ upon ʿal וְלָקַ֧חַת us, and take lāqaḥ אֹתָ֛נוּ ʾēt לַֽעֲבָדִ֖ים us for bondmen, ʿebed וְאֶת ʾēt חֲמֹרֵֽינוּ׃ and our asses. ḥămôr
  19. וַֽיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ And they came near nāgaš אֶל to ʾēl הָאִ֔ישׁ the steward ʾîš אֲשֶׁ֖ר ʾăšer עַל ʿal בֵּ֣ית house, bayit יוֹסֵ֑ף of Joseph's yôsēp וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ and they communed dābar אֵלָ֖יו with ʾēl פֶּ֥תַח him at the door petaḥ הַבָּֽיִת׃ of the house, bayit
  20. וַיֹּֽאמְר֖וּ And said, ʾāmar בִּ֣י O אֲדֹנִ֑י sir, ʾādôn יָרֹ֥ד we came indeed yārad יָרַ֛דְנוּ down yārad בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה at the first time tĕḥillâ לִשְׁבָּר to buy šābar אֹֽכֶל׃ food: ʾōkel
  21. וַיְהִ֞י And it came to pass, hāyâ כִּי when בָ֣אנוּ we came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl הַמָּל֗וֹן the inn, mālôn וַֽנִּפְתְּחָה֙ that we opened pātaḥ אֶת ʾēt אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ our sacks, ʾamtaḥat וְהִנֵּ֤ה and, behold, hinnē כֶֽסֶף money kesep אִישׁ֙ man's ʾîš בְּפִ֣י in the mouth pe אַמְתַּחְתּ֔וֹ of his sack, ʾamtaḥat כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ our money kesep בְּמִשְׁקָל֑וֹ in full weight: mišqāl וַנָּ֥שֶׁב and we have brought it again šûb אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt בְּיָדֵֽנוּ׃ in our hand. yād
  22. וְכֶ֧סֶף money kesep אַחֵ֛ר And other ʾaḥēr הוֹרַ֥דְנוּ have we brought down yārad בְיָדֵ֖נוּ in our hands yād לִשְׁבָּר to buy šābar אֹ֑כֶל food: ʾōkel לֹ֣א we cannot lōʾ יָדַ֔עְנוּ tell yādaʿ מִי who שָׂ֥ם put śûm כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ our money kesep בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵֽינוּ׃ in our sacks. ʾamtaḥat
  23. וַיֹּאמֶר֩ And he said, ʾāmar שָׁל֨וֹם Peace šālôm לָכֶ֜ם אַל not: ʾal תִּירָ֗אוּ to you, fear yārēʾ אֱלֹ֨הֵיכֶ֜ם your God, ʾĕlōhîm וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י and the God ʾĕlōhîm אֲבִיכֶם֙ of your father, ʾāb נָתַ֨ן hath given nātan לָכֶ֤ם מַטְמוֹן֙ you treasure maṭmôn בְּאַמְתְּחֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם in your sacks: ʾamtaḥat כַּסְפְּכֶ֖ם your money. kesep בָּ֣א I had bôʾ אֵלָ֑י ʾēl וַיּוֹצֵ֥א And he brought yāṣāʾ אֲלֵהֶ֖ם out unto them. ʾēl אֶת ʾēt שִׁמְעֽוֹן׃ Simeon šimʿôn
  24. וַיָּבֵ֥א brought bôʾ הָאִ֛ישׁ And the man ʾîš אֶת ʾēt הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים the men ʾîš בֵּ֣יתָה house, bayit יוֹסֵ֑ף into Joseph's yôsēp וַיִּתֶּן and gave nātan מַ֙יִם֙ water, mayim וַיִּרְחֲצ֣וּ and they washed rāḥaṣ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם their feet; regel וַיִּתֵּ֥ן and he gave nātan מִסְפּ֖וֹא provender. mispôʾ לַחֲמֹֽרֵיהֶֽם׃ their asses ḥămôr
  25. וַיָּכִ֙ינוּ֙ And they made ready kûn אֶת ʾēt הַמִּנְחָ֔ה the present minḥâ עַד against ʿad בּ֥וֹא came bôʾ יוֹסֵ֖ף Joseph yôsēp בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם at noon: ṣōhar כִּ֣י for שָֽׁמְע֔וּ they heard šāmaʿ כִּי that שָׁ֖ם there. šām יֹ֥אכְלוּ they should eat ʾākal לָֽחֶם׃ bread leḥem
  26. וַיָּבֹ֤א came bôʾ יוֹסֵף֙ And when Joseph yôsēp הַבַּ֔יְתָה home, bayit וַיָּבִ֥יאּוּ they brought bôʾ ל֛וֹ אֶת him ʾēt הַמִּנְחָ֥ה the present minḥâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer בְּיָדָ֖ם in their hand yād הַבָּ֑יְתָה into the house, bayit וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ and bowed themselves šāḥâ ל֖וֹ אָֽרְצָה׃ to him to the earth. ʾereṣ
  27. וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל And he asked šāʾal לָהֶם֙ לְשָׁל֔וֹם them of welfare, šālôm וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הֲשָׁל֛וֹם well, šālôm אֲבִיכֶ֥ם your father ʾāb הַזָּקֵ֖ן the old man zāqēn אֲשֶׁ֣ר of whom ʾăšer אֲמַרְתֶּ֑ם ye spake? ʾāmar הַֽעוֹדֶ֖נּוּ he yet ʿôd חָֽי׃ alive? ḥay
  28. וַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ And they answered, ʾāmar שָׁל֛וֹם in good health, šālôm לְעַבְדְּךָ֥ Thy servant ʿebed לְאָבִ֖ינוּ our father ʾāb עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ he yet ʿôd חָ֑י alive. ḥay וַֽיִּקְּד֖וּ And they bowed down their heads, qādad וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲוֻֽ׃ and made obeisance. šāḥâ
  29. וַיִּשָּׂ֣א And he lifted up nāśāʾ עֵינָ֗יו his eyes, ʿayin וַיַּ֞רְא and saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt בִּנְיָמִ֣ין Benjamin, binyāmîn אָחִיו֮ his brother ʾāḥ בֶּן son, bēn אִמּוֹ֒ his mother's ʾēm וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הֲזֶה֙ this ze אֲחִיכֶ֣ם brother, ʾāḥ הַקָּטֹ֔ן your younger qāṭān אֲשֶׁ֥ר of whom ʾăšer אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם ye spake ʾāmar אֵלָ֑י unto ʾēl וַיֹּאמַ֕ר me? And he said, ʾāmar אֱלֹהִ֥ים God ʾĕlōhîm יָחְנְךָ֖ be gracious ḥānan בְּנִֽי׃ unto thee, my son. bēn
  30. וַיְמַהֵ֣ר made haste; māhar יוֹסֵ֗ף And Joseph yôsēp כִּֽי for נִכְמְר֤וּ did yearn kāmar רַֽחֲמָיו֙ his bowels raḥam אֶל upon ʾēl אָחִ֔יו his brother: ʾāḥ וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ and he sought bāqaš לִבְכּ֑וֹת to weep; bākâ וַיָּבֹ֥א and he entered into bôʾ הַחַ֖דְרָה chamber, ḥeder וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ and wept bākâ שָֽׁמָּה׃ there. šām
  31. וַיִּרְחַ֥ץ And he washed rāḥaṣ פָּנָ֖יו his face, pānîm וַיֵּצֵ֑א and went out, yāṣāʾ וַיִּ֨תְאַפַּ֔ק and refrained himself, ʾāpaq וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar שִׂ֥ימוּ Set on śûm לָֽחֶם׃ bread. leḥem
  32. וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ And they set on śûm ל֛וֹ לְבַדּ֖וֹ for him by himself, bad וְלָהֶ֣ם לְבַדָּ֑ם and for them by themselves, bad וְלַמִּצְרִ֞ים and for the Egyptians, miṣrî הָאֹֽכְלִ֤ים which did eat ʾākal אִתּוֹ֙ with ʾēt לְבַדָּ֔ם him, by themselves: bad כִּי֩ because לֹ֨א not lōʾ יֽוּכְל֜וּן might yākōl הַמִּצְרִ֗ים the Egyptians miṣrî לֶֽאֱכֹ֤ל eat ʾākal אֶת ʾēt הָֽעִבְרִים֙ with the Hebrews; ʿibrî לֶ֔חֶם bread leḥem כִּֽי for תוֹעֵבָ֥ה an abomination tôʿēba הִ֖וא that hûʾ לְמִצְרָֽיִם׃ unto the Egyptians. miṣrayim
  33. וַיֵּֽשְׁב֣וּ And they sat yāšab לְפָנָ֔יו before him, pānîm הַבְּכֹר֙ the firstborn bĕkôr כִּבְכֹ֣רָת֔וֹ according to his birthright, bĕkôrâ וְהַצָּעִ֖יר and the youngest ṣāʿîr כִּצְעִֽרָת֑וֹ according to his youth: ṣĕʿîrâ וַיִּתְמְה֥וּ marvelled tāmah הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים and the men ʾîš אִ֥ישׁ one ʾîš אֶל at ʾēl רֵעֵֽהוּ׃ another. rēaʿ
  34. וַיִּשָּׂ֨א And he took nāśāʾ מַשְׂאֹ֜ת messes maśʾēt מֵאֵ֣ת ʾēt פָּנָיו֮ them from before him: pānîm אֲלֵהֶם֒ unto ʾēl וַתֵּ֜רֶב so much as rābâ מַשְׂאַ֧ת mess maśʾēt בִּנְיָמִ֛ן but Benjamin's binyāmîn מִמַּשְׂאֹ֥ת maśʾēt כֻּלָּ֖ם any kōl חָמֵ֣שׁ was five ḥāmēš יָד֑וֹת times yād וַיִּשְׁתּ֥וּ of theirs. And they drank, šātâ וַֽיִּשְׁכְּר֖וּ and were merry šākar עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him. ʿim
