  1. וַיִּשְׁמַ֞ע heard šāmaʿ יִתְר֨וֹ When Jethro, yitrô כֹהֵ֤ן the priest kōhēn מִדְיָן֙ of Midian, midyān חֹתֵ֣ן father in law, ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֔ה Moses' mōše אֵת֩ ʾēt כָּל of all kōl אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֤ה had done ʿāśâ אֱלֹהִים֙ God ʾĕlōhîm לְמֹשֶׁ֔ה for Moses, mōše וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל and for Israel yiśrāʾēl עַמּ֑וֹ his people, ʿam כִּֽי that הוֹצִ֧יא had brought yāṣāʾ יְהוָ֛ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ out of Egypt; miṣrayim
  2. וַיִּקַּ֗ח took lāqaḥ יִתְרוֹ֙ Then Jethro, yitrô חֹתֵ֣ן father in law, ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֔ה Moses' mōše אֶת ʾēt צִפֹּרָ֖ה Zipporah, ṣippōrâ אֵ֣שֶׁת wife, ʾiššâ מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses' mōše אַחַ֖ר after ʾaḥar שִׁלּוּחֶֽיהָ׃ he had sent her back, šillûaḥ
  3. וְאֵ֖ת ʾēt שְׁנֵ֣י And her two šĕnayim בָנֶ֑יהָ sons; bēn אֲשֶׁ֨ר of which ʾăšer שֵׁ֤ם the name šēm הָֽאֶחָד֙ of the one ʾeḥād גֵּֽרְשֹׁ֔ם Gershom; gērĕšōm כִּ֣י for אָמַ֔ר he said, ʾāmar גֵּ֣ר an alien gēr הָיִ֔יתִי I have been hāyâ בְּאֶ֖רֶץ land: ʾereṣ נָכְרִיָּֽה׃ in a strange nokrî
  4. וְשֵׁ֥ם And the name šēm הָֽאֶחָ֖ד of the other ʾeḥād אֱלִיעֶ֑זֶר Eliezer; ʾĕlîʿezer כִּֽי for אֱלֹהֵ֤י the God ʾĕlōhîm אָבִי֙ of my father, ʾāb בְּעֶזְרִ֔י mine help, ʿēzer וַיַּצִּלֵ֖נִי and delivered nāṣal מֵחֶ֥רֶב me from the sword ḥereb פַּרְעֹֽה׃ of Pharaoh: parʿō
  5. וַיָּבֹ֞א came bôʾ יִתְר֨וֹ And Jethro, yitrô חֹתֵ֥ן father in law, ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֛ה Moses' mōše וּבָנָ֥יו with his sons bēn וְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ and his wife ʾiššâ אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses mōše אֶל into ʾēl הַמִּדְבָּ֗ר the wilderness, midbār אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer ה֛וּא he hûʾ חֹנֶ֥ה encamped ḥānâ שָׁ֖ם where šām הַ֥ר at the mount har הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃ of God: ʾĕlōhîm
  6. וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ And he said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֔ה Moses, mōše אֲנִ֛י I ʾănî חֹֽתֶנְךָ֥ thy father in law ḥātan יִתְר֖וֹ Jethro yitrô בָּ֣א am come bôʾ אֵלֶ֑יךָ unto ʾēl וְאִ֨שְׁתְּךָ֔ thee, and thy wife, ʾiššâ וּשְׁנֵ֥י and her two šĕnayim בָנֶ֖יהָ sons bēn עִמָּֽהּ׃ with her. ʿim
  7. וַיֵּצֵ֨א went out yāṣāʾ מֹשֶׁ֜ה And Moses mōše לִקְרַ֣את to meet qirʾâ חֹֽתְנ֗וֹ his father in law, ḥātan וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ and did obeisance, šāḥâ וַיִּשַּׁק and kissed nāšaq ל֔וֹ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֥וּ him; and they asked šāʾal אִישׁ each ʾîš לְרֵעֵ֖הוּ other rēaʿ לְשָׁל֑וֹם of welfare; šālôm וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ and they came bôʾ הָאֹֽהֱלָה׃ into the tent. ʾōhel
  8. וַיְסַפֵּ֤ר told sāpar מֹשֶׁה֙ And Moses mōše לְחֹ֣תְנ֔וֹ his father in law ḥātan אֵת֩ ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֤ה had done ʿāśâ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ לְפַרְעֹ֣ה unto Pharaoh parʿō וּלְמִצְרַ֔יִם and to the Egyptians miṣrayim עַ֖ל for ʿal אוֹדֹ֣ת sake, ʾôdôt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel's yiśrāʾēl אֵ֤ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַתְּלָאָה֙ the travail tĕlāʾâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer מְצָאָ֣תַם had come upon māṣāʾ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ them by the way, derek וַיַּצִּלֵ֖ם delivered them. nāṣal יְהוָֽה׃ and the Lord yĕhōwâ
  9. וַיִּ֣חַדְּ rejoiced ḥādâ יִתְר֔וֹ And Jethro yitrô עַ֚ל for ʿal כָּל all kōl הַטּוֹבָ֔ה the goodness ṭôb אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer עָשָׂ֥ה had done ʿāśâ יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל to Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom ʾăšer הִצִּיל֖וֹ he had delivered nāṣal מִיַּ֥ד out of the hand yād מִצְרָֽיִם׃ of the Egyptians. miṣrayim
  10. וַיֹּאמֶר֮ said, ʾāmar יִתְרוֹ֒ And Jethro yitrô בָּר֣וּךְ Blessed bārak יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֨ר who ʾăšer הִצִּ֥יל hath delivered nāṣal אֶתְכֶ֛ם ʾēt מִיַּ֥ד you out of the hand yād מִצְרַ֖יִם of the Egyptians, miṣrayim וּמִיַּ֣ד and out of the hand yād פַּרְעֹ֑ה of Pharaoh, parʿō אֲשֶׁ֤ר who ʾăšer הִצִּיל֙ hath delivered nāṣal אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֔ם the people ʿam מִתַּ֖חַת from under taḥat יַד the hand yād מִצְרָֽיִם׃ of the Egyptians. miṣrayim
  11. עַתָּ֣ה Now ʿattâ יָדַ֔עְתִּי I know yādaʿ כִּֽי that גָד֥וֹל greater gādôl יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ מִכָּל than all kōl הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים gods: ʾĕlōhîm כִּ֣י for בַדָּבָ֔ר in the thing dābār אֲשֶׁ֥ר wherein ʾăšer זָד֖וּ they dealt proudly zûd עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ above them. ʿal
  12. וַיִּקַּ֞ח took lāqaḥ יִתְר֨וֹ And Jethro, yitrô חֹתֵ֥ן father in law, ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֛ה Moses' mōše עֹלָ֥ה a burnt offering ʿōlâ וּזְבָחִ֖ים and sacrifices zebaḥ לֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים for God: ʾĕlōhîm וַיָּבֹ֨א came, bôʾ אַֽהֲרֹ֜ן and Aaron ʾahărôn וְכֹ֣ל׀ and all kōl זִקְנֵ֣י the elders zāqēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֶֽאֱכָל to eat ʾākal לֶ֛חֶם bread leḥem עִם with ʿim חֹתֵ֥ן father in law ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֖ה Moses' mōše לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃ God. ʾĕlōhîm
  13. וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת on the morrow, moḥŏrāt וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב sat yāšab מֹשֶׁ֖ה that Moses mōše לִשְׁפֹּ֣ט to judge šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֑ם the people: ʿam וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֤ד stood ʿāmad הָעָם֙ and the people ʿam עַל by ʿal מֹשֶׁ֔ה Moses mōše מִן from min הַבֹּ֖קֶר the morning bōqer עַד unto ʿad הָעָֽרֶב׃ the evening. ʿereb
  14. וַיַּרְא֙ saw rāʾâ חֹתֵ֣ן father in law ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֔ה And when Moses' mōše אֵ֛ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer ה֥וּא he hûʾ עֹשֶׂ֖ה did ʿāśâ לָעָ֑ם to the people, ʿam וַיֹּ֗אמֶר he said, ʾāmar מָֽה What הַדָּבָ֤ר thing dābār הַזֶּה֙ this ze אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer אַתָּ֤ה thou ʾattâ עֹשֶׂה֙ doest ʿāśâ לָעָ֔ם to the people? ʿam מַדּ֗וּעַ why maddûaʿ אַתָּ֤ה thou ʾattâ יוֹשֵׁב֙ sittest yāšab לְבַדֶּ֔ךָ thyself alone, bad וְכָל and all kōl הָעָ֛ם the people ʿam נִצָּ֥ב stand nāṣab עָלֶ֖יךָ by ʿal מִן thee from min בֹּ֥קֶר morning bōqer עַד unto ʿad עָֽרֶב׃ even? ʿereb
  15. וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar מֹשֶׁ֖ה And Moses mōše לְחֹֽתְנ֑וֹ unto his father in law, ḥātan כִּֽי Because יָבֹ֥א come bôʾ אֵלַ֛י unto ʾēl הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam לִדְרֹ֥שׁ me to inquire dāraš אֱלֹהִֽים׃ of God: ʾĕlōhîm
  16. כִּֽי When יִהְיֶ֨ה they have hāyâ לָהֶ֤ם דָּבָר֙ a matter, dābār בָּ֣א they come bôʾ אֵלַ֔י unto ʾēl וְשָׁ֣פַטְתִּ֔י me; and I judge šāpaṭ בֵּ֥ין between bên אִ֖ישׁ one ʾîš וּבֵ֣ין bên רֵעֵ֑הוּ and another, rēaʿ וְהֽוֹדַעְתִּ֛י and I do make know yādaʿ אֶת ʾēt חֻקֵּ֥י the statutes ḥōq הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים of God, ʾĕlōhîm וְאֶת ʾēt תּֽוֹרֹתָֽיו׃ and his laws. tôrâ
  17. וַיֹּ֛אמֶר said ʾāmar חֹתֵ֥ן father in law ḥātan מֹשֶׁ֖ה And Moses' mōše אֵלָ֑יו unto ʾēl לֹא not lōʾ טוֹב֙ good. ṭôb הַדָּבָ֔ר him, The thing dābār אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer אַתָּ֖ה thou ʾattâ עֹשֶֽׂה׃ doest ʿāśâ
  18. נָבֹ֣ל Thou wilt surely nābēl תִּבֹּ֔ל wear away, nābēl גַּם both gam אַתָּ֕ה thou, ʾattâ גַּם and gam הָעָ֥ם people ʿam הַזֶּ֖ה this ze אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עִמָּ֑ךְ with ʿim כִּֽי thee: for כָבֵ֤ד too heavy kābēd מִמְּךָ֙ for min הַדָּבָ֔ר this thing dābār לֹֽא thee; thou art not lōʾ תוּכַ֥ל able yākōl עֲשֹׂ֖הוּ to perform ʿāśâ לְבַדֶּֽךָ׃ it thyself alone. bad
  19. עַתָּ֞ה now ʿattâ שְׁמַ֤ע Hearken šāmaʿ בְּקֹלִי֙ unto my voice, qôl אִיעָ֣צְךָ֔ I will give thee counsel, yāʿaṣ וִיהִ֥י shall be hāyâ אֱלֹהִ֖ים and God ʾĕlōhîm עִמָּ֑ךְ with ʿim הֱיֵ֧ה thee: Be hāyâ אַתָּ֣ה thou ʾattâ לָעָ֗ם for the people ʿam מ֚וּל to God-ward, mûl הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים ʾĕlōhîm וְהֵֽבֵאתָ֥ mayest bring bôʾ אַתָּ֛ה that thou ʾattâ אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֖ים the causes dābār אֶל unto ʾēl הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃ God: ʾĕlōhîm
  20. וְהִזְהַרְתָּ֣ה And thou shalt teach zāhar אֶתְהֶ֔ם them ʾēt אֶת them ʾēt הַֽחֻקִּ֖ים ordinances ḥōq וְאֶת ʾēt הַתּוֹרֹ֑ת and laws, tôrâ וְהֽוֹדַעְתָּ֣ and shalt shew yādaʿ לָהֶ֗ם אֶת ʾēt הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ the way derek יֵ֣לְכוּ wherein they must walk, hālak בָ֔הּ וְאֶת ʾēt הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה and the work maʿăśe אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer יַֽעֲשֽׂוּן׃ they must do. ʿāśâ
  21. וְאַתָּ֣ה Moreover thou ʾattâ תֶֽחֱזֶ֣ה shalt provide ḥāzâ מִכָּל out of all kōl הָ֠עָם the people ʿam אַנְשֵׁי men, ʾîš חַ֜יִל able ḥayil יִרְאֵ֧י such as fear yārēʾ אֱלֹהִ֛ים God, ʾĕlōhîm אַנְשֵׁ֥י men ʾîš אֱמֶ֖ת of truth, ʾemet שֹׂ֣נְאֵי hating śānēʾ בָ֑צַע covetousness; beṣaʿ וְשַׂמְתָּ֣ and place śûm עֲלֵהֶ֗ם over ʿal שָׂרֵ֤י them, rulers śar אֲלָפִים֙ of thousands, ʾelep שָׂרֵ֣י rulers śar מֵא֔וֹת of hundreds, mēʾâ שָׂרֵ֥י rulers śar חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים of fifties, ḥămiššîm וְשָׂרֵ֥י and rulers śar עֲשָׂרֹֽת׃ of tens: ʿeśer
  22. וְשָֽׁפְט֣וּ And let them judge šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt הָעָם֮ the people ʿam בְּכָל at all kōl עֵת֒ seasons: ʿēt וְהָיָ֞ה and it shall be, hāyâ כָּל every kōl הַדָּבָ֤ר matter dābār הַגָּדֹל֙ great gādôl יָבִ֣יאוּ they shall bring bôʾ אֵלֶ֔יךָ unto ʾēl וְכָל thee, but every kōl הַדָּבָ֥ר matter dābār הַקָּטֹ֖ן small qāṭān יִשְׁפְּטוּ shall judge: šāpaṭ הֵ֑ם they hēm וְהָקֵל֙ so shall it be easier qālal מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ for ʿal וְנָֽשְׂא֖וּ thyself, and they shall bear nāśāʾ אִתָּֽךְ׃ with thee. ʾēt
  23. אִ֣ם If ʾim אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֤ר thing, dābār הַזֶּה֙ this ze תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה thou shalt do ʿāśâ וְצִוְּךָ֣ command ṣāwâ אֱלֹהִ֔ים and God ʾĕlōhîm וְיָֽכָלְתָּ֖ thee then thou shalt be able yākōl עֲמֹ֑ד to endure, ʿāmad וְגַם֙ shall also gam כָּל and all kōl הָעָ֣ם people ʿam הַזֶּ֔ה this ze עַל to ʿal מְקֹמ֖וֹ their place māqôm יָבֹ֥א go bôʾ בְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ in peace. šālôm
  24. וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע hearkened šāmaʿ מֹשֶׁ֖ה So Moses mōše לְק֣וֹל to the voice qôl חֹֽתְנ֑וֹ of his father in law, ḥātan וַיַּ֕עַשׂ and did ʿāśâ כֹּ֖ל all kōl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer אָמָֽר׃ he had said. ʾāmar
  25. וַיִּבְחַ֨ר chose bāḥar מֹשֶׁ֤ה And Moses mōše אַנְשֵׁי men ʾĕnôš חַ֙יִל֙ able ḥayil מִכָּל out of all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיִּתֵּ֥ן and made nātan אֹתָ֛ם ʾēt רָאשִׁ֖ים them heads rōš עַל over ʿal הָעָ֑ם the people, ʿam שָׂרֵ֤י rulers śar אֲלָפִים֙ of thousands, ʾelep שָׂרֵ֣י rulers śar מֵא֔וֹת of hundreds, mēʾâ שָׂרֵ֥י rulers śar חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים of fifties, ḥămiššîm וְשָׂרֵ֥י and rulers śar עֲשָׂרֹֽת׃ of tens. ʿeśer
  26. וְשָֽׁפְט֥וּ And they judged šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam בְּכָל at all kōl עֵ֑ת seasons: ʿēt אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֤ר causes dābār הַקָּשֶׁה֙ the hard qāše יְבִיא֣וּן they brought bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֔ה Moses, mōše וְכָל but every kōl הַדָּבָ֥ר matter dābār הַקָּטֹ֖ן small qāṭān יִשְׁפּוּט֥וּ they judged šāpaṭ הֵֽם׃ themselves. hēm
  27. וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח depart; šālaḥ מֹשֶׁ֖ה And Moses mōše אֶת let ʾēt חֹֽתְנ֑וֹ his father in law ḥātan וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ his way hālak ל֖וֹ and he went yālak אֶל into ʾēl אַרְצֽוֹ׃ his own land. ʾereṣ
