அந்தப்படி அவர்கள் அவனை வாரினால் அழுந்தக்கட்டும்போது, பவுல் சமீபமாய் நின்ற நூற்றுக்கு அதிபதியை நோக்கி: ரோமனும் நியாயம் விசாரிக்கப்படாதவனுமாயிருக்கிற மனுஷனை அடிக்கிறது உங்களுக்கு நியாயமா என்றான்.

அதன்படி அவர்கள் அவனைக் கயிற்றால் இருகக் கட்டும்போது, பவுல் அருகில் நின்ற நூற்றுக்கு அதிபதியைப் பார்த்து: ரோமனும் நியாயம் விசாரிக்கப்படாதவனுமாக இருக்கிற மனிதனை அடிக்கிறது உங்களுக்கு நியாயமா? என்றான்.

எனவே வீரர்கள் பவுலை அடிப்பதற்கு முயலத் துவங்கினர். ஆனால் பவுல் அங்கிருந்த படை அதிகாரியை நோக்கி, “தவறு செய்ததாக நிரூபிக்கப்படாத ஒரு ரோமக் குடிமகனை அடிக்கும் உரிமை உங்களுக்கு உண்டா?” என்று கேட்டான்.
