וְהַנַּ֧עַר And the child naʿar שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל Samuel šĕmûʾēl מְשָׁרֵ֥ת ministered šārat אֶת unto ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm עֵלִ֑י Eli. ʿēlî וּדְבַר And the word dābār יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ הָיָ֤ה was hāyâ יָקָר֙ precious yāqār בַּיָּמִ֣ים days; yôm הָהֵ֔ם in those hēm אֵ֥ין no ʾayin חָז֖וֹן vision. ḥāzôn נִפְרָֽץ׃ open pāraṣ

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ בַּיּ֣וֹם at that time, yôm הַה֔וּא when hûʾ וְעֵלִ֖י Eli ʿēlî שֹׁכֵ֣ב laid down šākab בִּמְקוֹמ֑וֹ in his place, māqôm וְעֵינָו֙ and his eyes ʿayin הֵחֵ֣לּוּ began ḥālal כֵה֔וֹת to wax dim, kēhe לֹ֥א not lōʾ יוּכַ֖ל he could yākōl לִרְאֽוֹת׃ see; rāʾâ

וְנֵ֤ר the lamp nîr אֱלֹהִים֙ of God ʾĕlōhîm טֶ֣רֶם And ere ṭerem יִכְבֶּ֔ה went out kābâ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֖ל and Samuel šĕmûʾēl שֹׁכֵ֑ב was laid down šākab בְּהֵיכַ֣ל in the temple hêkāl יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁר where ʾăšer שָׁ֖ם šām אֲר֥וֹן the ark ʾārôn אֱלֹהִֽים׃ of God ʾĕlōhîm

וַיִּקְרָ֧א called qārāʾ יְהוָ֛ה That the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל Samuel: šĕmûʾēl וַיֹּ֥אמֶר and he answered, ʾāmar הִנֵּֽנִי׃ Here I. hēn

וַיָּ֣רָץ And he ran rûṣ אֶל unto ʾēl עֵלִ֗י Eli, ʿēlî וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הִנְנִי֙ Here hinnē כִּֽי I; for kî קָרָ֣אתָ thou calledst qārāʾ לִּ֔י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר me. And he said, ʾāmar לֹֽא not; lōʾ קָרָ֖אתִי I called qārāʾ שׁ֣וּב again. šûb שְׁכָ֑ב lie down šākab וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ And he went hālak וַיִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ and lay down. šākab

וַיֹּ֣סֶף again, yāsap יְהוָ֗ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ קְרֹ֣א called qārāʾ עוֹד֮ yet ʿôd שְׁמוּאֵל֒ Samuel. šĕmûʾēl וַיָּ֤קָם arose qûm שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ and went hālak אֶל to ʾēl עֵלִ֔י Eli, ʿēlî וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הִנְנִ֔י Here hēn כִּ֥י I; for kî קָרָ֖אתָ thou didst call qārāʾ לִ֑י וַיֹּ֛אמֶר me. And he answered, ʾāmar לֹֽא not, lōʾ קָרָ֥אתִי I called qārāʾ בְנִ֖י my son; bēn שׁ֥וּב again. šûb שְׁכָֽב׃ lie down šākab

וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל Now Samuel šĕmûʾēl טֶ֖רֶם did not yet ṭerem יָדַ֣ע know yādaʿ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְטֶ֛רֶם yet ṭerem יִגָּלֶ֥ה revealed gālâ אֵלָ֖יו unto him. ʾēl דְּבַר neither was the word dābār יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּ֨סֶף again yāsap יְהוָ֥ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ קְרֹא called qārāʾ שְׁמוּאֵל֮ Samuel šĕmûʾēl בַּשְּׁלִישִׁת֒ the third time. šĕlîšî וַיָּ֙קָם֙ And he arose qûm וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ and went hālak אֶל to ʾēl עֵלִ֔י Eli, ʿēlî וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הִנְנִ֔י Here hēn כִּ֥י I; for kî קָרָ֖אתָ thou didst call qārāʾ לִ֑י וַיָּ֣בֶן perceived bîn עֵלִ֔י me. And Eli ʿēlî כִּ֥י that kî יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ קֹרֵ֥א had called qārāʾ לַנָּֽעַר׃ the child. naʿar

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar עֵלִ֣י Therefore Eli ʿēlî לִשְׁמוּאֵל֮ unto Samuel, šĕmûʾēl לֵ֣ךְ Go, hālak שְׁכָב֒ lie down: šākab וְהָיָה֙ and it shall be, hāyâ אִם if ʾim יִקְרָ֣א he call qārāʾ אֵלֶ֔יךָ ʾēl וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ thee, that thou shalt say, ʾāmar דַּבֵּ֣ר Speak, dābar יְהוָ֔ה Lord; yĕhōwâ כִּ֥י for kî שֹׁמֵ֖עַ heareth. šāmaʿ עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ thy servant ʿebed וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ went hālak שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל So Samuel šĕmûʾēl וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב and lay down šākab בִּמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃ in his place. māqôm

וַיָּבֹ֤א came, bôʾ יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיִּתְיַצַּ֔ב and stood, yāṣab וַיִּקְרָ֥א and called qārāʾ כְפַֽעַם as at other times, paʿam בְּפַ֖עַם paʿam שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל׀ Samuel, šĕmûʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Samuel. šĕmûʾēl וַיֹּ֤אמֶר answered, ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Then Samuel šĕmûʾēl דַּבֵּ֔ר Speak; dābar כִּ֥י for kî שֹׁמֵ֖עַ heareth. šāmaʿ עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ thy servant ʿebed

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל to ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl הִנֵּ֧ה Behold, hinnē אָֽנֹכִ֛י I ʾānōkî עֹשֶׂ֥ה will do ʿāśâ דָבָ֖ר a thing dābār בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל in Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁר֙ at which ʾăšer כָּל of every one kōl שֹׁ֣מְע֔וֹ that heareth šāmaʿ תְּצִלֶּ֖ינָה it shall tingle. ṣālal שְׁתֵּ֥י both šĕnayim אָזְנָֽיו׃ the ears ʾōzen

בַּיּ֤וֹם day yôm הַהוּא֙ In that hûʾ אָקִ֣ים I will perform qûm אֶל against ʾēl עֵלִ֔י Eli ʿēlî אֵ֛ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי I have spoken dābar אֶל concerning ʾēl בֵּית֑וֹ his house: bayit הָחֵ֖ל when I begin, ḥālal וְכַלֵּֽה׃ I will also make an end. kālâ

וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי For I have told nāgad ל֔וֹ כִּֽי him that kî שֹׁפֵ֥ט will judge šāpaṭ אֲנִ֛י I ʾănî אֶת ʾēt בֵּית֖וֹ his house bayit עַד for ʿad עוֹלָ֑ם ever ʿôlām בַּֽעֲוֹ֣ן for the iniquity ʿāwōn אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer יָדַ֗ע he knoweth; yādaʿ כִּֽי because kî מְקַלְלִ֤ים made themselves vile, qālal לָהֶם֙ hēm בָּנָ֔יו his sons bēn וְלֹ֥א them not. lōʾ כִהָ֖ה and he restrained kāhâ בָּֽם׃

וְלָכֵ֥ן And therefore kēn נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי I have sworn šābaʿ לְבֵ֣ית unto the house bayit עֵלִ֑י of Eli, ʿēlî אִֽם shall not ʾim יִתְכַּפֵּ֞ר be purged kāpar עֲוֹ֧ן that the iniquity ʿāwōn בֵּית house bayit עֵלִ֛י of Eli's ʿēlî בְּזֶ֥בַח with sacrifice zebaḥ וּבְמִנְחָ֖ה nor offering minḥâ עַד for ʿad עוֹלָֽם׃ ever. ʿôlām

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב lay šākab שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl עַד until ʿad הַבֹּ֔קֶר the morning, bōqer וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח and opened pātaḥ אֶת ʾēt דַּלְת֣וֹת the doors delet בֵּית of the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord. yĕhōwâ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֣ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl יָרֵ֔א feared yārēʾ מֵֽהַגִּ֥יד to shew nāgad אֶת ʾēt הַמַּרְאָ֖ה the vision. marʾâ אֶל ʾēl עֵלִֽי׃ Eli ʿēlî

וַיִּקְרָ֤א called qārāʾ עֵלִי֙ Then Eli ʿēlî אֶת ʾēt שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl בְּנִ֑י my son. bēn וַיֹּ֖אמֶר And he answered, ʾāmar הִנֵּֽנִי׃ Here I. hēn

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar מָ֤ה What mâ הַדָּבָר֙ the thing dābār אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֣ר hath said dābar אֵלֶ֔יךָ unto ʾēl אַל not ʾal נָ֥א thee? I pray thee nāʾ תְכַחֵ֖ד hide kāḥad מִמֶּ֑נִּי from min כֹּ֣ה kō יַֽעֲשֶׂה do so ʿāśâ לְּךָ֤ אֱלֹהִים֙ me: God ʾĕlōhîm וְכֹ֣ה kō יוֹסִ֔יף to thee, and more also, yāsap אִם if ʾim תְּכַחֵ֤ד thou hide kāḥad מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ from min דָּבָ֔ר thing dābār מִכָּל me of all kōl הַדָּבָ֖ר the things dābār אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֥ר he said dābar אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ unto thee. ʾēl

וַיַּגֶּד told nāgad ל֤וֹ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶת him ʾēt כָּל every kōl הַדְּבָרִ֔ים whit, dābār וְלֹ֥א nothing lōʾ כִחֵ֖ד and hid kāḥad מִמֶּ֑נּוּ from min וַיֹּאמַ֕ר him. And he said, ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה the Lord: yĕhōwâ ה֔וּא It hûʾ הַטּ֥וֹב him good. ṭôb בְּעֵינָ֖ו what seemeth ʿayin יַֽעֲשֶֽׂה׃ let him do ʿāśâ

וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל grew, gādal שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl וַֽיהוָה֙ and the Lord yĕhōwâ הָיָ֣ה was hāyâ עִמּ֔וֹ with ʿim וְלֹֽא him, and did let none lōʾ הִפִּ֥יל fall nāpal מִכָּל kōl דְּבָרָ֖יו of his words dābār אָֽרְצָה׃ to the ground. ʾereṣ

וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ knew yādaʿ כָּל And all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl מִדָּ֖ן from Dan dān וְעַד even to ʿad בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע Beer-sheba bĕʾēr šebaʿ כִּ֚י that kî נֶֽאֱמָ֣ן established ʾāman שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel šĕmûʾēl לְנָבִ֖יא a prophet nābîʾ לַֽיהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּ֥סֶף again yāsap יְהוָ֖ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ לְהֵֽרָאֹ֣ה appeared rāʾâ בְשִׁלֹ֑ה in Shiloh: šîlō כִּֽי for kî נִגְלָ֨ה revealed himself gālâ יְהוָ֧ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל to ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל Samuel šĕmûʾēl בְּשִׁל֖וֹ in Shiloh šîlō בִּדְבַ֥ר by the word dābār יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ
