וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl הִנֵּה֙ Behold, hinnē שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי I have hearkened šāmaʿ בְקֹֽלְכֶ֔ם unto your voice qôl לְכֹ֥ל in all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם ye said ʾāmar לִ֑י וָֽאַמְלִ֥יךְ unto me, and have made mālak עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם over you. ʿal מֶֽלֶךְ׃ a king melek

וְעַתָּ֞ה And now, ʿattâ הִנֵּ֥ה behold, hinnē הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ׀ the king melek מִתְהַלֵּ֣ךְ walketh hālak לִפְנֵיכֶ֗ם before pānîm וַֽאֲנִי֙ you: and I ʾănî זָקַ֣נְתִּי am old zāqēn וָשַׂ֔בְתִּי and grayheaded; śîb וּבָנַ֖י my sons bēn הִנָּ֣ם and, behold, hinnē אִתְּכֶ֑ם with ʾēt וַֽאֲנִי֙ you: and I ʾănî הִתְהַלַּ֣כְתִּי have walked hālak לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם before pānîm מִנְּעֻרַ֖י you from my childhood nāʿûr עַד unto ʿad הַיּ֥וֹם day. yôm הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

הִנְנִ֣י Behold, hēn עֲנ֣וּ here I witness ʿānâ בִי֩ נֶ֨גֶד against me before neged יְהוָ֜ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְנֶ֣גֶד and before neged מְשִׁיח֗וֹ his anointed: māšîaḥ אֶת ʾēt שׁוֹר֩׀ ox šôr מִ֨י whose mî לָקַ֜חְתִּי have I taken? lāqaḥ וַֽחֲמ֧וֹר ass ḥămôr מִ֣י or whose mî לָקַ֗חְתִּי have I taken? lāqaḥ וְאֶת ʾēt מִ֤י or whom mî עָשַׁ֙קְתִּי֙ have I defrauded? ʿāšaq אֶת ʾēt מִ֣י whom mî רַצּ֔וֹתִי have I oppressed? rāṣaṣ וּמִיַּד or of whose hand yād מִי֙ mî לָקַ֣חְתִּי have I received lāqaḥ כֹ֔פֶר bribe kōper וְאַעְלִ֥ים to blind ʿālam עֵינַ֖י mine eyes ʿayin בּ֑וֹ וְאָשִׁ֖יב therewith? and I will restore it you. šûb לָכֶֽם׃

וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ And they said, ʾāmar לֹ֥א Thou hast not lōʾ עֲשַׁקְתָּ֖נוּ defrauded ʿāšaq וְלֹ֣א us, nor lōʾ רַצּוֹתָ֑נוּ oppressed rāṣaṣ וְלֹֽא us, neither lōʾ לָקַ֥חְתָּ hast thou taken lāqaḥ מִיַּד hand. yād אִ֖ישׁ of any man's ʾîš מְאֽוּמָה׃ ought mĕʾûmâ

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם unto ʾēl עֵ֧ד witness ʿēd יְהוָ֣ה them, The Lord yĕhōwâ בָּכֶ֗ם וְעֵ֤ד witness ʿēd מְשִׁיחוֹ֙ against you, and his anointed māšîaḥ הַיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַזֶּ֔ה this ze כִּ֣י that kî לֹ֧א ye have not lōʾ מְצָאתֶ֛ם found māṣāʾ בְּיָדִ֖י in my hand. yād מְא֑וּמָה ought mĕʾûmâ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר And they answered, ʾāmar עֵֽד׃ witness. ʿēd

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl הָעָ֑ם the people, ʿam יְהוָ֗ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֤ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂה֙ advanced ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt מֹשֶׁ֣ה Moses mōše וְאֶֽת ʾēt אַהֲרֹ֔ן and Aaron, ʾahărôn וַֽאֲשֶׁ֧ר and that ʾăšer הֶֽעֱלָ֛ה brought up ʿālâ אֶת ʾēt אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֖ם your fathers ʾāb מֵאֶ֥רֶץ out of the land ʾereṣ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ of Egypt. miṣrayim

וְעַתָּ֗ה Now ʿattâ הִֽתְיַצְּב֛וּ therefore stand still, yāṣab וְאִשָּֽׁפְטָ֥ה that I may reason šāpaṭ אִתְּכֶ֖ם with ʾēt לִפְנֵ֣י you before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֵ֚ת of ʾēt כָּל all kōl צִדְק֣וֹת the righteous acts ṣĕdāqâ יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer עָשָׂ֥ה he did ʿāśâ אִתְּכֶ֖ם to ʾēt וְאֶת you and to ʾēt אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ your fathers. ʾāb

כַּֽאֲשֶׁר When ʾăšer בָּ֥א was come bôʾ יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב Jacob yaʿăqōb מִצְרָ֑יִם into Egypt, miṣrayim וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ cried zāʿaq אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ and your fathers ʾāb אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ יְהוָ֜ה then the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt מֹשֶׁ֣ה Moses mōše וְאֶֽת ʾēt אַהֲרֹ֗ן and Aaron, ʾahărôn וַיּוֹצִ֤יאוּ which brought forth yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ your fathers ʾāb מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם out of Egypt, miṣrayim וַיֹּֽשִׁב֖וּם and made them dwell yāšab בַּמָּק֥וֹם place. māqôm הַזֶּֽה׃ in this ze

וַֽיִּשְׁכְּח֖וּ And when they forgat šākaḥ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם their God, ʾĕlōhîm וַיִּמְכֹּ֣ר he sold mākar אֹתָ֡ם ʾēt בְּיַ֣ד them into the hand yād סִֽיסְרָא֩ of Sisera, sîsĕrāʾ שַׂר captain śar צְבָ֨א of the host ṣābāʾ חָצ֜וֹר of Hazor, ḥāṣôr וּבְיַד and into the hand yād פְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים of the Philistines, pĕlištî וּבְיַד֙ and into the hand yād מֶ֣לֶךְ of the king melek מוֹאָ֔ב of Moab, môʾāb וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ and they fought against them. lāḥam בָּֽם׃

וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ And they cried zāʿaq אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָה֙ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּֽאמְר֣ and said, ʾāmar חָטָ֔אנוּ We have sinned, ḥāṭāʾ כִּ֤י because kî עָזַ֙בְנוּ֙ we have forsaken ʿāzab אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַנַּֽעֲבֹ֥ד and have served ʿābad אֶת ʾēt הַבְּעָלִ֖ים Baalim baʿal וְאֶת ʾēt הָֽעַשְׁתָּר֑וֹת and Ashtaroth: ʿaštārôt וְעַתָּ֗ה but now ʿattâ הַצִּילֵ֛נוּ deliver nāṣal מִיַּ֥ד us out of the hand yād אֹֽיְבֵ֖ינוּ of our enemies, ʾōyēb וְנַֽעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃ and we will serve thee. ʿābad

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח sent šālaḥ יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt יְרֻבַּ֣עַל Jerubbaal, yĕrubbaʿal וְאֶת ʾēt בְּדָ֔ן and Bedan, bĕdān וְאֶת ʾēt יִפְתָּ֖ח and Jephthah, yiptāḥ וְאֶת ʾēt שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל and Samuel, šĕmûʾēl וַיַּצֵּ֨ל and delivered nāṣal אֶתְכֶ֜ם ʾēt מִיַּ֤ד you out of the hand yād אֹֽיְבֵיכֶם֙ of your enemies ʾōyēb מִסָּבִ֔יב on every side, sābîb וַתֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ and ye dwelled yāšab בֶּֽטַח׃ safe. beṭaḥ

וַתִּרְא֗וּ And when ye saw rāʾâ כִּֽי that kî נָחָ֞שׁ Nahash nāḥoš מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn עַמּוֹן֮ of Ammon ʿammôn בָּ֣א came bôʾ עֲלֵיכֶם֒ against ʿal וַתֹּ֣אמְרוּ you, ye said ʾāmar לִ֔י לֹ֕א unto me, Nay; lōʾ כִּי but kî מֶ֖לֶךְ a king melek יִמְלֹ֣ךְ shall reign mālak עָלֵ֑ינוּ over ʿal וַֽיהוָ֥ה us: when the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם your God ʾĕlōhîm מַלְכְּכֶֽם׃ your king. melek

וְעַתָּ֗ה Now ʿattâ הִנֵּ֥ה therefore behold hinnē הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ the king melek אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom ʾăšer בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם ye have chosen, bāḥar אֲשֶׁ֣ר whom ʾăšer שְׁאֶלְתֶּ֑ם ye have desired! šāʾal וְהִנֵּ֨ה and, behold, hinnē נָתַ֧ן hath set nātan יְהוָ֛ה the Lord yĕhōwâ עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם over you. ʿal מֶֽלֶךְ׃ a king melek

אִם If ʾim תִּֽירְא֣וּ ye will fear yārēʾ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַֽעֲבַדְתֶּ֤ם and serve ʿābad אֹתוֹ֙ ʾēt וּשְׁמַעְתֶּ֣ם him, and obey šāmaʿ בְּקוֹל֔וֹ his voice, qôl וְלֹ֥א and not lōʾ תַמְר֖וּ rebel against mārâ אֶת ʾēt פִּ֣י the commandment pe יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וִֽהְיִתֶ֣ם you continue hāyâ גַּם then shall both gam אַתֶּ֗ם ye ʾattâ וְגַם and also gam הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer מָלַ֣ךְ reigneth mālak עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם over ʿal אַחַ֖ר following ʾaḥar יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם׃ your God: ʾĕlōhîm

וְאִם But if ʾim לֹ֤א ye will not lōʾ תִשְׁמְעוּ֙ obey šāmaʿ בְּק֣וֹל the voice qôl יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וּמְרִיתֶ֖ם but rebel against mārâ אֶת ʾēt פִּ֣י the commandment pe יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְהָֽיְתָ֧ה be hāyâ יַד then shall the hand yād יְהוָ֛ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ בָּכֶ֖ם וּבַאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃ against you, as against your fathers. ʾāb

גַּם therefore gam עַתָּה֙ Now ʿattâ הִתְיַצְּב֣וּ stand yāṣab וּרְא֔וּ and see rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֥ר thing, dābār הַגָּד֖וֹל great gādôl הַזֶּ֑ה this ze אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ עֹשֶׂ֖ה will do ʿāśâ לְעֵֽינֵיכֶֽם׃ before your eyes. ʿayin

הֲל֤וֹא not lōʾ קְצִיר harvest qāṣîr חִטִּים֙ wheat ḥiṭṭâ הַיּ֔וֹם to day? yôm אֶקְרָא֙ I will call qārāʾ אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְיִתֵּ֥ן and he shall send nātan קֹל֖וֹת thunder qôl וּמָטָ֑ר and rain; māṭar וּדְע֣וּ that ye may perceive yādaʿ וּרְא֗וּ and see rāʾâ כִּֽי that kî רָעַתְכֶ֤ם your wickedness raʿ רַבָּה֙ great, rab אֲשֶׁ֤ר which ʾăšer עֲשִׂיתֶם֙ ye have done ʿāśâ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ לִשְׁא֥וֹל in asking šāʾal לָכֶ֖ם מֶֽלֶךְ׃ you a king. melek

וַיִּקְרָ֤א called qārāʾ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ So Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ וַיִּתֵּ֧ן sent nātan יְהוָ֛ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ קֹלֹ֥ת thunder qôl וּמָטָ֖ר and rain māṭar בַּיּ֣וֹם day: yôm הַה֑וּא that hûʾ וַיִּירָ֨א feared yārēʾ כָל and all kōl הָעָ֥ם the people ʿam מְאֹ֛ד greatly mĕʾōd אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וְאֶת ʾēt שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃ and Samuel. šĕmûʾēl

וַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּ said ʾāmar כָל And all kōl הָעָ֜ם the people ʿam אֶל unto ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl הִתְפַּלֵּ֧ל Pray pālal בְּעַד for bĕʿad עֲבָדֶ֛יךָ thy servants ʿebed אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ thy God, ʾĕlōhîm וְאַל not: ʾal נָמ֑וּת that we die mût כִּֽי for kî יָסַ֤פְנוּ we have added yāsap עַל unto ʿal כָּל all kōl חַטֹּאתֵ֙ינוּ֙ our sins ḥaṭṭāʾâ רָעָ֔ה evil, raʿ לִשְׁאֹ֥ל to ask šāʾal לָ֖נוּ מֶֽלֶךְ׃ us a king. melek

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl הָעָם֙ the people, ʿam אַל not: ʾal תִּירָ֔אוּ Fear yārēʾ אַתֶּ֣ם ye ʾattâ עֲשִׂיתֶ֔ם have done ʿāśâ אֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָֽרָעָ֖ה wickedness: raʿ הַזֹּ֑את this zōt אַ֗ךְ yet ʾak אַל ʾal תָּס֙וּרוּ֙ turn not aside sûr מֵאַֽחֲרֵ֣י from following ʾaḥar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַֽעֲבַדְתֶּ֥ם but serve ʿābad אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּכָל with all kōl לְבַבְכֶֽם׃ your heart; lēbāb

וְלֹ֖א lōʾ תָּס֑וּרוּ And turn ye not aside: sûr כִּ֣י׀ for kî אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after ʾaḥar הַתֹּ֗הוּ vain tōhû אֲשֶׁ֧ר which ʾăšer לֹֽא cannot lōʾ יוֹעִ֛ילוּ profit yāʿal וְלֹ֥א nor lōʾ יַצִּ֖ילוּ deliver; nāṣal כִּי for kî תֹ֥הוּ vain. tōhû הֵֽמָּה׃ they hēm

כִּ֠י For kî לֹֽא will not lōʾ יִטֹּ֤שׁ forsake nāṭaš יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt עַמּ֔וֹ his people ʿam בַּֽעֲב֖וּר sake: ʿābûr שְׁמ֣וֹ name's šēm הַגָּד֑וֹל for his great gādôl כִּ֚י because kî הוֹאִ֣יל it hath pleased yāʾal יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת to make ʿāśâ אֶתְכֶ֛ם ʾēt ל֖וֹ לְעָֽם׃ you his people. ʿam

גַּ֣ם Moreover gam אָֽנֹכִ֗י as for me, ʾānōkî חָלִ֤ילָה God forbid ḥālîlâ לִּי֙ מֵֽחֲטֹ֣א that I should sin ḥāṭāʾ לַֽיהוָ֔ה against the Lord yĕhōwâ מֵֽחֲדֹ֖ל in ceasing ḥādal לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל to pray pālal בַּֽעַדְכֶ֑ם for bĕʿad וְהֽוֹרֵיתִ֣י you: but I will teach yārâ אֶתְכֶ֔ם ʾēt בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ way: derek הַטּוֹבָ֖ה you the good ṭôb וְהַיְשָׁרָֽה׃ and the right yāšār

אַ֣ךְ׀ Only ʾak יְר֣אוּ fear yārēʾ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַֽעֲבַדְתֶּ֥ם and serve ʿābad אֹת֛וֹ ʾēt בֶּֽאֱמֶ֖ת him in truth ʾemet בְּכָל with all kōl לְבַבְכֶ֑ם your heart: lēbāb כִּ֣י for kî רְא֔וּ consider rāʾâ אֵ֥ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר how ʾăšer הִגְדִּ֖ל great he hath done gādal עִמָּכֶֽם׃ for you. ʿim

וְאִם But if ʾim הָרֵ֖עַ ye shall still rāʿaʿ תָּרֵ֑עוּ do wickedly, rāʿaʿ גַּם both gam אַתֶּ֥ם ye ʾattâ גַּֽם and gam מַלְכְּכֶ֖ם your king. melek תִּסָּפֽוּ׃ ye shall be consumed, sāpâ
