וַיַּ֗עַל came up, ʿālâ נָחָשׁ֙ Then Nahash nāḥoš הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔י the Ammonite ʿammônî וַיִּ֖חַן and encamped ḥānâ עַל against ʿal יָבֵ֣ישׁ Jabesh-gilead: yābēš גִּלְעָ֑ד gilʿād וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ said ʾāmar כָּל and all kōl אַנְשֵׁ֤י the men ʾîš יָבֵישׁ֙ of Jabesh yābēš אֶל unto ʾēl נָחָ֔שׁ Nahash, nāḥoš כְּרָת Make kārat לָ֥נוּ בְרִ֖ית a covenant bĕrît וְנַֽעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃ with us, and we will serve thee. ʿābad

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר answered ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם ʾēl נָחָשׁ֙ And Nahash nāḥoš הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔י the Ammonite ʿammônî בְּזֹאת֙ them, On this zōt אֶכְרֹ֣ת will I make kārat לָכֶ֔ם בִּנְק֥וֹר with you, that I may thrust out nāqar לָכֶ֖ם כָּל all kōl עֵ֣ין eyes, ʿayin יָמִ֑ין your right yāmîn וְשַׂמְתִּ֥יהָ and lay śûm חֶרְפָּ֖ה it a reproach ḥerpâ עַל upon ʿal כָּל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּ said ʾāmar אֵלָ֜יו unto ʾēl זִקְנֵ֣י And the elders zāqēn יָבֵ֗ישׁ of Jabesh yābēš הֶ֤רֶף respite, rāpâ לָ֙נוּ֙ שִׁבְעַ֣ת him, Give us seven šebaʿ יָמִ֔ים days' yôm וְנִשְׁלְחָה֙ that we may send šālaḥ מַלְאָכִ֔ים messengers mălʾok בְּכֹ֖ל unto all kōl גְּב֣וּל the coasts gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel: yiśrāʾēl וְאִם and then, if ʾim אֵ֥ין no man ʾayin מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ to save yāšaʿ אֹתָ֖נוּ ʾēt וְיָצָ֥אנוּ us, we will come out yāṣāʾ אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ to thee. ʾēl

וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ Then came bôʾ הַמַּלְאָכִים֙ the messengers mălʾok גִּבְעַ֣ת to Gibeah gibʿâ שָׁא֔וּל of Saul, šāʾûl וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ and told dābar הַדְּבָרִ֖ים the tidings dābār בְּאָזְנֵ֣י in the ears ʾōzen הָעָ֑ם of the people: ʿam וַיִּשְׂא֧וּ lifted up nāśāʾ כָל and all kōl הָעָ֛ם the people ʿam אֶת ʾēt קוֹלָ֖ם their voices, qôl וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ and wept. bākâ

וְהִנֵּ֣ה And, behold, hinnē שָׁא֗וּל Saul šāʾûl בָּ֣א came bôʾ אַֽחֲרֵ֤י after ʾaḥar הַבָּקָר֙ the herd bāqār מִן out of min הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה the field; śāde וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar שָׁא֔וּל and Saul šāʾûl מַה What mâ לָּעָ֖ם the people ʿam כִּ֣י that kî יִבְכּ֑וּ they weep? bākâ וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ And they told sāpar ל֔וֹ אֶת him ʾēt דִּבְרֵ֖י the tidings dābār אַנְשֵׁ֥י of the men ʾĕnôš יָבֵֽישׁ׃ of Jabesh. yābēš

וַתִּצְלַ֤ח came ṣālaḥ רֽוּחַ And the Spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִים֙ of God ʾĕlōhîm עַל upon ʿal שָׁא֔וּל Saul šāʾûl בְּשָׁמְע֖וֹ when he heard šāmaʿ אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֣ים tidings, dābār הָאֵ֑לֶּה those ʾēlle וַיִּ֥חַר was kindled ḥārâ אַפּ֖וֹ and his anger ʾap מְאֹֽד׃ greatly. mĕʾōd

וַיִּקַּח֩ And he took lāqaḥ צֶ֨מֶד a yoke ṣemed בָּקָ֜ר of oxen, bāqār וַֽיְנַתְּחֵ֗הוּ and hewed them in pieces, nātaḥ וַיְשַׁלַּ֞ח and sent šālaḥ בְּכָל throughout all kōl גְּב֣וּל the coasts gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ of Israel yiśrāʾēl בְּיַ֣ד by the hands yād הַמַּלְאָכִ֣ים׀ of messengers, mălʾok לֵאמֹר֒ saying, ʾāmar אֲשֶׁר֩ Whosoever ʾăšer אֵינֶ֨נּוּ ʾayin יֹצֵ֜א cometh not forth yāṣāʾ אַֽחֲרֵ֤י after ʾaḥar שָׁאוּל֙ Saul šāʾûl וְאַחַ֣ר and after ʾaḥar שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl כֹּ֥ה so kō יֵֽעָשֶׂ֖ה shall it be done ʿāśâ לִבְקָר֑וֹ unto his oxen. bāqār וַיִּפֹּ֤ל fell nāpal פַּֽחַד And the fear paḥad יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ עַל on ʿal הָעָ֔ם the people, ʿam וַיֵּֽצְא֖וּ and they came out yāṣāʾ כְּאִ֥ישׁ consent. ʾîš אֶחָֽד׃ with one ʾeḥād

וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֖ם And when he numbered pāqad בְּבָ֑זֶק them in Bezek, bezeq וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ were hāyâ בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl שְׁלֹ֣שׁ three šālôš מֵא֣וֹת hundred mēʾâ אֶ֔לֶף thousand, ʾelep וְאִ֥ישׁ and the men ʾîš יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah yĕhûdâ שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים thirty šĕlôšîm אָֽלֶף׃ thousand. ʾelep

וַיֹּֽאמְר֞וּ And they said ʾāmar לַמַּלְאָכִ֣ים unto the messengers mălʾok הַבָּאִ֗ים that came, bôʾ כֹּ֤ה Thus kō תֹֽאמְרוּן֙ shall ye say ʾāmar לְאִישׁ֙ unto the men ʾîš יָבֵ֣ישׁ of Jabesh-gilead, yābēš גִּלְעָ֔ד gilʿād מָחָ֛ר To morrow, māḥār תִּֽהְיֶֽה ye shall have hāyâ לָכֶ֥ם תְּשׁוּעָ֖ה help. tĕšûʿâ בְּחֹ֣ם be hot, ḥōm הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ by the sun šemeš וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ came bôʾ הַמַּלְאָכִ֗ים And the messengers mălʾok וַיַּגִּ֛ידוּ and shewed nāgad לְאַנְשֵׁ֥י to the men ʾîš יָבֵ֖ישׁ of Jabesh; yābēš וַיִּשְׂמָֽחוּ׃ and they were glad. śāmaḥ

וַֽיֹּאמְרוּ֙ said, ʾāmar אַנְשֵׁ֣י Therefore the men ʾĕnôš יָבֵ֔ישׁ of Jabesh yābēš מָחָ֖ר To morrow māḥār נֵצֵ֣א we will come out yāṣāʾ אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם unto ʾēl וַֽעֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם you, and ye shall do ʿāśâ לָּ֔נוּ כְּכָל with us all kōl הַטּ֖וֹב good unto you. ṭôb בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶֽם׃ that seemeth ʿayin

וַיְהִ֣י And it was hāyâ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת on the morrow, moḥŏrāt וַיָּ֨שֶׂם put śûm שָׁא֣וּל that Saul šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt הָעָם֮ the people ʿam שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה in three šālôš רָאשִׁים֒ companies; rōš וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ and they came bôʾ בְתוֹךְ into the midst tāwek הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ of the host maḥăne בְּאַשְׁמֹ֣רֶת watch, ʾašmurâ הַבֹּ֔קֶר in the morning bōqer וַיַּכּ֥וּ and slew nākâ אֶת ʾēt עַמּ֖וֹן the Ammonites ʿammôn עַד until ʿad חֹ֣ם the heat ḥōm הַיּ֑וֹם of the day: yôm וַיְהִ֤י and it came to pass, hāyâ הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙ that they which remained šāʾar וַיָּפֻ֔צוּ were scattered, pûṣ וְלֹ֥א of them were not lōʾ נִשְׁאֲרוּ left šāʾar בָ֖ם שְׁנַ֥יִם so that two šĕnayim יָֽחַד׃ together. yaḥad

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar הָעָם֙ And the people ʿam אֶל unto ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl מִ֣י Who mî הָֽאֹמֵ֔ר he that said, ʾāmar שָׁא֖וּל Shall Saul šāʾûl יִמְלֹ֣ךְ reign mālak עָלֵ֑ינוּ over ʿal תְּנ֥וּ us? bring nātan הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים the men, ʾîš וּנְמִיתֵֽם׃ that we may put them to death. mût

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar שָׁא֔וּל And Saul šāʾûl לֹֽא There shall not lōʾ יוּמַ֥ת be put to death mût אִ֖ישׁ a man ʾîš בַּיּ֣וֹם day: yôm הַזֶּ֑ה this ze כִּ֥י for kî הַיּ֛וֹם to day yôm עָשָֽׂה hath wrought ʿāśâ יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ תְּשׁוּעָ֖ה salvation tĕšûʿâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ in Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר Then said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל to ʾēl הָעָ֔ם the people, ʿam לְכ֖וּ Come, hālak וְנֵֽלְכָ֣ה and let us go hālak הַגִּלְגָּ֑ל to Gilgal, gilgāl וּנְחַדֵּ֥שׁ and renew ḥādaš שָׁ֖ם there. šām הַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ the kingdom mĕlûkâ

וַיֵּֽלְכ֨וּ went hālak כָל And all kōl הָעָ֜ם the people ʿam הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל to Gilgal; gilgāl וַיַּמְלִכוּ֩ king mālak שָׁ֨ם and there šām אֶת ʾēt שָׁא֜וּל they made Saul šāʾûl לִפְנֵ֤י before pānîm יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ בַּגִּלְגָּ֔ל in Gilgal; gilgāl וַיִּזְבְּחוּ they sacrificed zābaḥ שָׁ֛ם and there šām זְבָחִ֥ים sacrifices zebaḥ שְׁלָמִ֖ים of peace offerings šelem לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ וַיִּשְׂמַ֨ח rejoiced śāmaḥ שָׁ֥ם and there šām שָׁא֛וּל Saul šāʾûl וְכָל and all kōl אַנְשֵׁ֥י the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl עַד ʿad מְאֹֽד׃ greatly. mĕʾōd
