וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֧וּ did ʿāśâ בְנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl הָרַ֖ע evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord: yĕhōwâ וַיִּתְּנֵ֧ם delivered nātan יְהוָ֛ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיַד them into the hand yād מִדְיָ֖ן of Midian midyān שֶׁ֥בַע seven šebaʿ שָׁנִֽים׃ years. šāne

וַתָּ֥עָז prevailed ʿāzaz יַד And the hand yād מִדְיָ֖ן of Midian midyān עַל against ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl מִפְּנֵ֨י because pānîm מִדְיָ֜ן of the Midianites midyān עָשֽׂוּ made ʿāśâ לָהֶ֣ם׀ בְּנֵ֣י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת them ʾēt הַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ the dens minhārâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים in the mountains, har וְאֶת ʾēt הַמְּעָר֖וֹת and caves, mĕʿārâ וְאֶת ʾēt הַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃ and strong holds. mĕṣad

וְהָיָ֖ה And it was, hāyâ אִם when ʾim זָרַ֣ע had sown, zāraʿ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וְעָלָ֨ה came up, ʿālâ מִדְיָ֧ן that the Midianites midyān וַֽעֲמָלֵ֛ק and the Amalekites, ʿămālēq וּבְנֵי and the children bēn קֶ֖דֶם of the east, qedem וְעָל֥וּ even they came up ʿālâ עָלָֽיו׃ against them; ʿal

וַיַּֽחֲנ֣וּ And they encamped ḥānâ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם against ʿal וַיַּשְׁחִ֙יתוּ֙ them, and destroyed šāḥat אֶת ʾēt יְב֣וּל the increase yĕbûl הָאָ֔רֶץ of the earth, ʾereṣ עַד till ʿad בּֽוֹאֲךָ֖ thou come bôʾ עַזָּ֑ה unto Gaza, ʿazzâ וְלֹֽא no lōʾ יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ and left šāʾar מִֽחְיָה֙ sustenance miḥyâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל for Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְשֶׂ֥ה neither sheep, śe וָשׁ֖וֹר nor ox, šôr וַֽחֲמֽוֹר׃ nor ass. ḥămôr

כִּ֡י For kî הֵם֩ they hēm וּמִקְנֵיהֶ֨ם with their cattle miqne יַֽעֲל֜וּ came up ʿālâ וְאָֽהֳלֵיהֶ֗ם and their tents, ʾōhel יּבָ֤אוּ and they came bôʾ כְדֵֽי as day אַרְבֶּה֙ grasshoppers ʾarbe לָרֹ֔ב for multitude; rōb וְלָהֶ֥ם both they hēm וְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶ֖ם and their camels gāmāl אֵ֣ין were without ʾayin מִסְפָּ֑ר number: mispār וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ and they entered bôʾ בָאָ֖רֶץ into the land ʾereṣ לְשַֽׁחֲתָֽהּ׃ to destroy it. šāḥat

וַיִּדַּ֧ל impoverished dālal יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל And Israel yiśrāʾēl מְאֹ֖ד was greatly mĕʾōd מִפְּנֵ֣י because pānîm מִדְיָ֑ן of the Midianites; midyān וַיִּזְעֲק֥וּ cried zāʿaq בְנֵֽי and the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיְהִ֕י And it came to pass, hāyâ כִּֽי when kî זָעֲק֥וּ cried zāʿaq בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֑ה the Lord yĕhōwâ עַ֖ל of ʿal אֹד֥וֹת because ʾôdôt מִדְיָֽן׃ the Midianites, midyān

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח sent šālaḥ יְהוָ֛ה That the Lord yĕhōwâ אִ֥ישׁ a prophet ʾîš נָבִ֖יא nābîʾ אֶל unto ʾēl בְּנֵ֣י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֨אמֶר which said ʾāmar לָהֶ֜ם כֹּֽה unto them, Thus kō אָמַ֥ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה׀ the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אָֽנֹכִ֞י I ʾānōkî הֶֽעֱלֵ֤יתִי brought you up ʿālâ אֶתְכֶם֙ ʾēt מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם from Egypt, miṣrayim וָֽאֹצִ֥יא and brought you forth yāṣāʾ אֶתְכֶ֖ם ʾēt מִבֵּ֥ית out of the house bayit עֲבָדִֽים׃ of bondage; ʿebed

וָֽאַצִּ֤ל And I delivered nāṣal אֶתְכֶם֙ ʾēt מִיַּ֣ד you out of the hand yād מִצְרַ֔יִם of the Egyptians, miṣrayim וּמִיַּ֖ד and out of the hand yād כָּל of all kōl לֹֽחֲצֵיכֶ֑ם that oppressed lāḥaṣ וָֽאֲגָרֵ֤שׁ you, and drave them out gāraš אוֹתָם֙ you ʾēt מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם from before pānîm וָֽאֶתְּנָ֥ה you, and gave nātan לָכֶ֖ם אֶת ʾēt אַרְצָֽם׃ their land; ʾereṣ

וָֽאֹמְרָ֣ה And I said ʾāmar לָכֶ֗ם אֲנִי֙ unto you, I ʾănî יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם your God; ʾĕlōhîm לֹ֤א not lōʾ תִֽירְאוּ֙ fear yārēʾ אֶת ʾēt אֱלֹהֵ֣י the gods ʾĕlōhîm הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י of the Amorites, ʾĕmōrî אֲשֶׁ֥ר in whose ʾăšer אַתֶּ֖ם ye ʾattâ יֽוֹשְׁבִ֣ים dwell: yāšab בְּאַרְצָ֑ם land ʾereṣ וְלֹ֥א but ye have not lōʾ שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם obeyed šāmaʿ בְּקוֹלִֽי׃ my voice. qôl

וַיָּבֹ֞א And there came bôʾ מַלְאַ֣ךְ an angel mălʾok יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ and sat yāšab תַּ֤חַת under taḥat הָֽאֵלָה֙ an oak ʾēlâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer בְּעָפְרָ֔ה in Ophrah, ʿoprâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer לְיוֹאָ֖שׁ unto Joash yôʾoš אֲבִ֣י הָֽעֶזְרִ֑י the Abi-ezrite: ʾăbî hāʿezrî וְגִדְע֣וֹן Gideon gidʿôn בְּנ֗וֹ and his son bēn חֹבֵ֤ט threshed ḥābaṭ חִטִּים֙ wheat ḥiṭṭâ בַּגַּ֔ת by the winepress, gat לְהָנִ֖יס to hide nûs מִפְּנֵ֥י from pānîm מִדְיָֽן׃ the Midianites. midyān

וַיֵּרָ֥א appeared rāʾâ אֵלָ֖יו unto ʾēl מַלְאַ֣ךְ And the angel mălʾok יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר him, and said ʾāmar אֵלָ֔יו unto ʾēl יְהוָ֥ה him, The Lord yĕhōwâ עִמְּךָ֖ with ʿim גִּבּ֥וֹר thee, thou mighty man gibbôr הֶחָֽיִל׃ of valour. ḥayil

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָ֤יו unto ʾēl גִּדְעוֹן֙ And Gideon gidʿôn בִּ֣י him, Oh bî אֲדֹנִ֔י my Lord, ʾādôn וְיֵ֤שׁ be yēš יְהוָה֙ if the Lord yĕhōwâ עִמָּ֔נוּ with ʿim וְלָ֥מָּה us, why mâ מְצָאַ֖תְנוּ befallen māṣāʾ כָּל then is all kōl זֹ֑את this zōt וְאַיֵּ֣ה us? and where ʾayyē כָֽל all kōl נִפְלְאֹתָ֡יו his miracles pālāʾ אֲשֶׁר֩ which ʾăšer סִפְּרוּ told sāpar לָ֨נוּ אֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ our fathers ʾāb לֵאמֹ֗ר us of, saying, ʾāmar הֲלֹ֤א Did not lōʾ מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ from Egypt? miṣrayim הֶֽעֱלָ֣נוּ bring us up ʿālâ יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וְעַתָּה֙ but now ʿattâ נְטָשָׁ֣נוּ hath forsaken nāṭaš יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ us, and delivered nātan בְּכַף us into the hands kap מִדְיָֽן׃ of the Midianites. midyān

וַיִּ֤פֶן looked pānâ אֵלָיו֙ upon ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר him, and said, ʾāmar לֵ֚ךְ Go yālak בְּכֹֽחֲךָ֣ thy might, kōaḥ זֶ֔ה in this ze וְהֽוֹשַׁעְתָּ֥ and thou shalt save yāšaʿ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl מִכַּ֣ף from the hand kap מִדְיָ֑ן of the Midianites: midyān הֲלֹ֖א have not lōʾ שְׁלַחְתִּֽיךָ׃ I sent thee? šālaḥ

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl בִּ֣י him, Oh bî אֲדֹנָ֔י my Lord, ʾădōnāy בַּמָּ֥ה wherewith mâ אוֹשִׁ֖יעַ shall I save yāšaʿ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel? yiśrāʾēl הִנֵּ֤ה behold, hinnē אַלְפִּי֙ my family ʾelep הַדַּ֣ל poor dal בִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה in Manasseh, mĕnašše וְאָֽנֹכִ֥י and I ʾānōkî הַצָּעִ֖יר the least ṣāʿîr בְּבֵ֥ית house. bayit אָבִֽי׃ in my father's ʾāb

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ כִּ֥י him, Surely kî אֶֽהְיֶ֖ה I will be hāyâ עִמָּ֑ךְ with ʿim וְהִכִּיתָ֥ thee, and thou shalt smite nākâ אֶת ʾēt מִדְיָ֖ן the Midianites midyān כְּאִ֥ישׁ man. ʾîš אֶחָֽד׃ as one ʾeḥād

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֵלָ֔יו unto ʾēl אִם him, If ʾim נָ֛א now nāʾ מָצָ֥אתִי I have found māṣāʾ חֵ֖ן grace ḥēn בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ in thy sight, ʿayin וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ then shew ʿāśâ לִּי֙ א֔וֹת me a sign ʾôt שָֽׁאַתָּ֖ה that thou ʾattâ מְדַבֵּ֥ר talkest dābar עִמִּֽי׃ with me. ʿim

אַל not ʾal נָ֨א I pray thee, nāʾ תָמֻ֤שׁ Depart mûš מִזֶּה֙ hence, ze עַד until ʿad בֹּאִ֣י I come bôʾ אֵלֶ֔יךָ unto ʾēl וְהֹֽצֵאתִי֙ thee, and bring forth yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt מִנְחָתִ֔י my present, minḥâ וְהִנַּחְתִּ֖י and set yānaḥ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ before pānîm וַיֹּאמַ֕ר thee. And he said, ʾāmar אָֽנֹכִ֥י I ʾānōkî אֵשֵׁ֖ב will tarry yāšab עַ֥ד until ʿad שׁוּבֶֽךָ׃ thou come again. šûb

וְגִדְע֣וֹן And Gideon gidʿôn בָּ֗א went in, bôʾ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ and made ready ʿāśâ גְּדִֽי gĕdî עִזִּים֙ a kid, ʿēz וְאֵיפַת of an ephah ʾêpâ קֶ֣מַח of flour: qemaḥ מַצּ֔וֹת and unleavened cakes maṣṣâ הַבָּשָׂר֙ the flesh bāśār שָׂ֣ם he put śûm בַּסַּ֔ל in a basket, sal וְהַמָּרַ֖ק the broth mārāq שָׂ֣ם and he put śûm בַּפָּר֑וּר in a pot, pārûr וַיּוֹצֵ֥א and brought out yāṣāʾ אֵלָ֛יו unto ʾēl אֶל him under ʾēl תַּ֥חַת taḥat הָֽאֵלָ֖ה the oak, ʾēlâ וַיַּגַּֽשׁ׃ and presented nāgaš

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָ֜יו unto ʾēl מַלְאַ֣ךְ And the angel mălʾok הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים of God ʾĕlōhîm קַ֣ח him, Take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt הַבָּשָׂ֤ר the flesh bāśār וְאֶת ʾēt הַמַּצּוֹת֙ and the unleavened cakes, maṣṣâ וְהַנַּח֙ and lay yānaḥ אֶל upon ʾēl הַסֶּ֣לַע rock, selaʿ הַלָּ֔ז this hallāz וְאֶת ʾēt הַמָּרַ֖ק the broth. mārāq שְׁפ֑וֹךְ and pour out šāpak וַיַּ֖עַשׂ And he did ʿāśâ כֵּֽן׃ so. kēn

וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח put forth šālaḥ מַלְאַ֣ךְ Then the angel mălʾok יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt קְצֵ֤ה the end qāṣe הַמִּשְׁעֶ֙נֶת֙ of the staff mišʿēnâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בְּיָד֔וֹ in his hand, yād וַיִּגַּ֥ע and touched nāgaʿ בַּבָּשָׂ֖ר the flesh bāśār וּבַמַּצּ֑וֹת and the unleavened cakes; maṣṣâ וַתַּ֨עַל and there rose up ʿālâ הָאֵ֜שׁ fire ʾēš מִן out of min הַצּ֗וּר the rock, ṣûr וַתֹּ֤אכַל and consumed ʾākal אֶת ʾēt הַבָּשָׂר֙ the flesh bāśār וְאֶת ʾēt הַמַּצּ֔וֹת and the unleavened cakes. maṣṣâ וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ Then the angel mălʾok יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ הָלַ֖ךְ departed hālak מֵֽעֵינָֽיו׃ out of his sight. ʿayin

וַיַּ֣רְא perceived rāʾâ גִּדְע֔וֹן And when Gideon gidʿôn כִּֽי that kî מַלְאַ֥ךְ an angel mălʾok יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ ה֑וּא he hûʾ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar גִּדְע֗וֹן Gideon gidʿôn אֲהָהּ֙ Alas, ʾăhāh אֲדֹנָ֣י O Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֔ה God! yĕhōwi כִּֽי for kî עַל ʿal כֵּ֤ן because kēn רָאִ֙יתִי֙ I have seen rāʾâ מַלְאַ֣ךְ an angel mălʾok יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ פָּנִ֖ים face pānîm אֶל to ʾēl פָּנִֽים׃ face. pānîm

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar ל֧וֹ יְהוָ֛ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ שָׁל֥וֹם unto him, Peace šālôm לְךָ֖ אַל not: ʾal תִּירָ֑א unto thee; fear yārēʾ לֹ֖א thou shalt not lōʾ תָּמֽוּת׃ die. mût

וַיִּבֶן֩ built bānâ שָׁ֨ם there šām גִּדְע֤וֹן Then Gideon gidʿôn מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֔ה unto the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיִּקְרָא and called qārāʾ ל֥וֹ יְהוָ֖ה it Jehovah-shalom: yĕhōwâ שָׁל֑וֹם šālôm עַ֚ד unto ʿad הַיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַזֶּ֔ה this ze עוֹדֶ֕נּוּ it yet ʿôd בְּעָפְרָ֖ת in Ophrah ʿoprâ אֲבִ֥י הָֽעֶזְרִֽי׃ of the Abi-ezrites. ʾăbî hāʿezrî

וַיְהִי֮ And it came to pass hāyâ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה night, layil הַהוּא֒ the same hûʾ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar ל֣וֹ יְהוָ֗ה that the Lord yĕhōwâ קַ֤ח unto him, Take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt פַּר young par הַשּׁוֹר֙ bullock, šôr אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer לְאָבִ֔יךָ thy father's ʾāb וּפַ֥ר bullock par הַשֵּׁנִ֖י even the second šēnî שֶׁ֣בַע of seven šebaʿ שָׁנִ֑ים years old, šāne וְהָֽרַסְתָּ֗ and throw down hāras אֶת ʾēt מִזְבַּ֤ח the altar mizbēaḥ הַבַּ֙עַל֙ of Baal baʿal אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer לְאָבִ֔יךָ thy father ʾāb וְאֶת ʾēt הָֽאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה the grove ʾăšērâ אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer עָלָ֖יו by it: ʿal תִּכְרֹֽת׃ hath, and cut down kārat

וּבָנִ֨יתָ And build bānâ מִזְבֵּ֜חַ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֣ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm עַ֣ל upon ʿal רֹ֧אשׁ the top rōš הַמָּע֛וֹז rock, māʿôz הַזֶּ֖ה of this ze בַּמַּֽעֲרָכָ֑ה in the ordered place, maʿărākâ וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֙ and take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt הַפָּ֣ר bullock, par הַשֵּׁנִ֔י the second šēnî וְהַֽעֲלִ֣יתָ and offer ʿālâ עוֹלָ֔ה a burnt sacrifice ʿōlâ בַּֽעֲצֵ֥י with the wood ʿēṣ הָֽאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה of the grove ʾăšērâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer תִּכְרֹֽת׃ thou shalt cut down. kārat

וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ גִּדְע֜וֹן Then Gideon gidʿôn עֲשָׂרָ֤ה ten ʿeśer אֲנָשִׁים֙ men ʾîš מֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יו of his servants, ʿebed וַיַּ֕עַשׂ and did ʿāśâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר as ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֥ר had said dābar אֵלָ֖יו unto ʾēl יְהוָ֑ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיְהִ֡י him: and it was, hāyâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר because ʾăšer יָרֵא֩ he feared yārēʾ אֶת ʾēt בֵּ֨ית household, bayit אָבִ֜יו his father's ʾāb וְאֶת ʾēt אַנְשֵׁ֥י and the men ʾîš הָעִ֛יר of the city, ʿîr מֵֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת that he could not do ʿāśâ יוֹמָ֖ם by day, yômām וַיַּ֥עַשׂ that he did ʿāśâ לָֽיְלָה׃ by night. layil

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֜ימוּ arose early šākam אַנְשֵׁ֤י And when the men ʾîš הָעִיר֙ of the city ʿîr בַּבֹּ֔קֶר in the morning, bōqer וְהִנֵּ֤ה behold, hinnē נֻתַּץ֙ was cast down, nātaṣ מִזְבַּ֣ח the altar mizbēaḥ הַבַּ֔עַל of Baal baʿal וְהָֽאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה and the grove ʾăšērâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָלָ֖יו by ʿal כֹּרָ֑תָה was cut down kārat וְאֵת֙ ʾēt הַפָּ֣ר bullock par הַשֵּׁנִ֔י it, and the second šēnî הֹֽעֲלָ֔ה was offered ʿālâ עַל upon ʿal הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ the altar mizbēaḥ הַבָּנֽוּי׃ built. bānâ

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ And they said ʾāmar אִ֣ישׁ one ʾîš אֶל to ʾēl רֵעֵ֔הוּ another, rēaʿ מִ֥י Who mî עָשָׂ֖ה hath done ʿāśâ הַדָּבָ֣ר thing? dābār הַזֶּ֑ה this ze וַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ֙ And when they inquired dāraš וַיְבַקְשׁ֔וּ and asked, bāqaš וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ they said, ʾāmar גִּדְעוֹן֙ Gideon gidʿôn בֶּן the son bēn יוֹאָ֔שׁ of Joash yôʾoš עָשָׂ֖ה hath done ʿāśâ הַדָּבָ֥ר thing. dābār הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ said ʾāmar אַנְשֵׁ֤י Then the men ʾîš הָעִיר֙ of the city ʿîr אֶל unto ʾēl יוֹאָ֔שׁ Joash, yôʾoš הוֹצֵ֥א Bring out yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt בִּנְךָ֖ thy son, bēn וְיָמֹ֑ת that he may die: mût כִּ֤י because kî נָתַץ֙ he hath cast down nātaṣ אֶת ʾēt מִזְבַּ֣ח the altar mizbēaḥ הַבַּ֔עַל of Baal, baʿal וְכִ֥י and because kî כָרַ֖ת he hath cut down kārat הָֽאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה the grove ʾăšērâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָלָֽיו׃ by it. ʿal

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar יוֹאָ֡שׁ And Joash yôʾoš לְכֹל֩ unto all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָֽמְד֨וּ stood ʿāmad עָלָ֜יו against ʿal הַֽאַתֶּ֣ם׀ him, Will ye ʾattâ תְּרִיב֣וּן plead rîb לַבַּ֗עַל for Baal? baʿal אִם if ʾim אַתֶּם֙ will ye ʾattâ תּֽוֹשִׁיע֣וּן save yāšaʿ אוֹת֔וֹ ʾēt אֲשֶׁ֨ר him? he that ʾăšer יָרִ֥יב will plead rîb ל֛וֹ יוּמַ֖ת for him, let him be put to death mût עַד whilst ʿad הַבֹּ֑קֶר morning: bōqer אִם ʾim אֱלֹהִ֥ים a god, ʾĕlōhîm הוּא֙ he hûʾ יָ֣רֶב let him plead rîb ל֔וֹ כִּ֥י for himself, because kî נָתַ֖ץ hath cast down nātaṣ אֶֽת ʾēt מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃ his altar. mizbēaḥ

וַיִּקְרָא he called qārāʾ ל֥וֹ בַיּוֹם day yôm הַה֖וּא Therefore on that hûʾ יְרֻבַּ֣עַל him Jerubbaal, yĕrubbaʿal לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar יָ֤רֶב plead rîb בּוֹ֙ הַבַּ֔עַל Let Baal baʿal כִּ֥י against him, because kî נָתַ֖ץ he hath thrown down nātaṣ אֶֽת ʾēt מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃ his altar. mizbēaḥ

וְכָל Then all kōl מִדְיָ֧ן the Midianites midyān וַֽעֲמָלֵ֛ק and the Amalekites ʿămālēq וּבְנֵי and the children bēn קֶ֖דֶם of the east qedem נֶֽאֶסְפ֣וּ were gathered ʾāsap יַחְדָּ֑ו together, yaḥad וַיַּֽעַבְר֥וּ and went over, ʿābar וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ and pitched ḥānâ בְּעֵ֥מֶק in the valley ʿēmeq יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ of Jezreel. yizrĕʿēl

וְר֣וּחַ But the Spirit rûaḥ יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ לָֽבְשָׁ֖ה came upon lābaš אֶת ʾēt גִּדְע֑וֹן Gideon, gidʿôn וַיִּתְקַע֙ and he blew tāqaʿ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר a trumpet; šôpār וַיִּזָּעֵ֥ק was gathered zāʿaq אֲבִיעֶ֖זֶר and Abiezer ʾăbîʿezer אַֽחֲרָֽיו׃ after him. ʾaḥar

וּמַלְאָכִים֙ messengers mălʾok שָׁלַ֣ח And he sent šālaḥ בְּכָל throughout all kōl מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה Manasseh; mĕnašše וַיִּזָּעֵ֥ק was gathered zāʿaq גַּם also gam ה֖וּא who hûʾ אַֽחֲרָ֑יו after ʾaḥar וּמַלְאָכִ֣ים messengers mălʾok שָׁלַ֗ח him: and he sent šālaḥ בְּאָשֵׁ֤ר unto Asher, ʾāšēr וּבִזְבֻלוּן֙ and unto Zebulun, zĕbûlûn וּבְנַפְתָּלִ֔י and unto Naphtali; naptālî וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ and they came up ʿālâ לִקְרָאתָֽם׃ to meet them. qirʾâ

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar גִּדְע֖וֹן And Gideon gidʿôn אֶל unto ʾēl הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים God, ʾĕlōhîm אִם If ʾim יֶשְׁךָ֞ thou wilt yēš מוֹשִׁ֧יעַ save yāšaʿ בְּיָדִ֛י by mine hand, yād אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ thou hast said, dābar

הִנֵּ֣ה Behold, hinnē אָֽנֹכִ֗י I ʾānōkî מַצִּ֛יג will put yāṣag אֶת ʾēt גִּזַּ֥ת a fleece gozza הַצֶּ֖מֶר of wool ṣemer בַּגֹּ֑רֶן in the floor; gōren אִ֡ם if ʾim טַל֩ the dew ṭal יִֽהְיֶ֨ה be hāyâ עַֽל on ʿal הַגִּזָּ֜ה the fleece gozza לְבַדָּ֗הּ only, bad וְעַל upon ʿal כָּל all kōl הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ the earth ʾereṣ חֹ֔רֶב and dry ḥōreb וְיָֽדַעְתִּ֗י then shall I know yādaʿ כִּֽי that kî תוֹשִׁ֧יעַ thou wilt save yāšaʿ בְּיָדִ֛י by mine hand, yād אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ thou hast said. dābar

וַיְהִי And it was hāyâ כֵ֕ן so: kēn וַיַּשְׁכֵּם֙ for he rose up early šākam מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת on the morrow, moḥŏrāt וַיָּ֖זַר and thrust together, zûr אֶת ʾēt הַגִּזָּ֑ה the fleece gozza וַיִּ֤מֶץ and wringed māṣâ טַל֙ the dew ṭal מִן out of min הַגִּזָּ֔ה the fleece, gozza מְל֥וֹא full mĕlōʾ הַסֵּ֖פֶל a bowl sēpel מָֽיִם׃ of water. mayim

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar גִּדְעוֹן֙ And Gideon gidʿôn אֶל unto ʾēl הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים God, ʾĕlōhîm אַל Let not ʾal יִ֤חַר be hot ḥārâ אַפְּךָ֙ thine anger ʾap בִּ֔י וַֽאֲדַבְּרָ֖ה against me, and I will speak dābar אַ֣ךְ but ʾak הַפָּ֑עַם this once: paʿam אֲנַסֶּ֤ה let me prove, nāsâ נָּא I pray thee, nāʾ רַק but raq הַפַּ֙עַם֙ this once paʿam בַּגִּזָּ֔ה with the fleece; gozza יְהִי be hāyâ נָ֨א let it now nāʾ חֹ֤רֶב dry ḥōreb אֶל upon ʾēl הַגִּזָּה֙ the fleece, gozza לְבַדָּ֔הּ only bad וְעַל and upon ʿal כָּל all kōl הָאָ֖רֶץ the ground ʾereṣ יִֽהְיֶה let there be hāyâ טָּֽל׃ dew. ṭal

וַיַּ֧עַשׂ did ʿāśâ אֱלֹהִ֛ים And God ʾĕlōhîm כֵּ֖ן so kēn בַּלַּ֣יְלָה night: layil הַה֑וּא that hûʾ וַֽיְהִי for it was hāyâ חֹ֤רֶב dry ḥōreb אֶל upon ʾēl הַגִּזָּה֙ the fleece gozza לְבַדָּ֔הּ only, bad וְעַל on ʿal כָּל all kōl הָאָ֖רֶץ the ground. ʾereṣ הָ֥יָה and there was hāyâ טָֽל׃ dew ṭal
