וְאֵ֤לֶּה Now these ʾēlle הַגּוֹיִם֙ the nations gôy אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer הִנִּ֣יחַ left, yānaḥ יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לְנַסּ֥וֹת to prove nāsâ בָּ֖ם אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אֵ֚ת by them, ʾēt כָּל as many kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer לֹֽא as had not lōʾ יָדְע֔וּ known yādaʿ אֵ֖ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl מִלְחֲמ֥וֹת the wars milḥāmâ כְּנָֽעַן׃ of Canaan; kĕnaʿan

רַ֗ק Only raq לְמַ֙עַן֙ that maʿan דַּ֚עַת might know, yādaʿ דֹּר֣וֹת the generations dôr בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl לְלַמְּדָ֖ם to teach lāmad מִלְחָמָ֑ה them war, milḥāmâ רַ֥ק at the least raq אֲשֶׁר such as ʾăšer לְפָנִ֖ים before pānîm לֹ֥א nothing thereof; lōʾ יְדָעֽוּם׃ knew yādaʿ

חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת׀ five ḥāmēš סַרְנֵ֣י lords seren פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים of the Philistines, pĕlištî וְכָל and all kōl הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ the Canaanites, kĕnaʿanî וְהַצִּ֣ידֹנִ֔י and the Sidonians, ṣîdōnî וְהַ֣חִוִּ֔י and the Hivites ḥiwwî יֹשֵׁ֖ב that dwelt yāšab הַ֣ר in mount har הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן Lebanon, lĕbānôn מֵהַר֙ from mount har בַּ֣עַל חֶרְמ֔וֹן Baal-hermon baʿal ḥermôn עַ֖ד unto ʿad לְב֥וֹא the entering in bôʾ חֲמָֽת׃ of Hamath. ḥămāt

וַיִּֽהְי֕וּ And they were hāyâ לְנַסּ֥וֹת to prove nāsâ בָּ֖ם אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiśrāʾēl לָדַ֗עַת by them, to know yādaʿ הֲיִשְׁמְעוּ֙ whether they would hearken šāmaʿ אֶת unto ʾēt מִצְוֹ֣ת the commandments miṣwâ יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer צִוָּ֥ה he commanded ṣāwâ אֶת ʾēt אֲבוֹתָ֖ם their fathers ʾāb בְּיַד by the hand yād מֹשֶֽׁה׃ of Moses. mōše

וּבְנֵ֣י And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl יָֽשְׁב֖וּ dwelt yāšab בְּקֶ֣רֶב among qereb הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י the Canaanites, kĕnaʿanî הַֽחִתִּ֤י Hittites, ḥittî וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ and Amorites, ʾĕmōrî וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י and Perizzites, pĕrizzî וְהַֽחִוִּ֖י and Hivites, ḥiwwî וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ and Jebusites: yĕbûsî

וַיִּקְח֨וּ And they took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt בְּנֽוֹתֵיהֶ֤ם their daughters bat לָהֶם֙ hēm לְנָשִׁ֔ים to be their wives, ʾiššâ וְאֶת ʾēt בְּנֽוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם their daughters bat נָֽתְנ֣וּ and gave nātan לִבְנֵיהֶ֑ם to their sons, bēn וַיַּֽעַבְד֖וּ and served ʿābad אֶת ʾēt אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶֽם׃ their gods. ʾĕlōhîm

וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֨וּ did ʿāśâ בְנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת ʾēt הָרַע֙ evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַֽיִּשְׁכְּח֖וּ and forgat šākaḥ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם their God, ʾĕlōhîm וַיַּֽעַבְד֥וּ and served ʿābad אֶת ʾēt הַבְּעָלִ֖ים Baalim baʿal וְאֶת ʾēt הָֽאֲשֵׁרֽוֹת׃ and the groves. ʾăšērâ

וַיִּֽחַר was hot ḥārâ אַ֤ף Therefore the anger ʾap יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל against Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵ֗ם and he sold mākar בְּיַד֙ them into the hand yād כּוּשַׁ֣ן רִשְׁעָתַ֔יִם of Chushan-rishathaim kûšan rišʿātayim מֶ֖לֶךְ king melek אֲרַ֣ם נַֽהֲרָ֑יִם of Mesopotamia: ʾăram nahărayim וַיַּֽעַבְד֧וּ served ʿābad בְנֵֽי and the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת ʾēt כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתַ֖יִם Chushan-rishathaim kûšan rišʿātayim שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה eight šĕmōne שָׁנִֽים׃ years. šāne

וַיִּזְעֲק֤וּ cried zāʿaq בְנֵֽי And when the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּ֨קֶם raised up qûm יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ a deliverer yāšaʿ לִבְנֵ֥י to the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיּֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֑ם who delivered yāšaʿ אֵ֚ת them, ʾēt עָתְנִיאֵ֣ל Othniel ʿotnîʾēl בֶּן the son bēn קְנַ֔ז of Kenaz, qĕnaz אֲחִ֥י brother. ʾāḥ כָלֵ֖ב Caleb's kālēb הַקָּטֹ֥ן younger qāṭān מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ min

וַתְּהִ֨י came hāyâ עָלָ֥יו upon ʿal רֽוּחַ And the Spirit rûaḥ יְהוָה֮ of the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֣ט him, and he judged šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֵּצֵא֙ and went out yāṣāʾ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה to war: milḥāmâ וַיִּתֵּ֤ן delivered nātan יְהוָה֙ and the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיָד֔וֹ into his hand; yād אֶת ʾēt כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתַ֖יִם Chushan-rishathaim kûšan rišʿātayim מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek אֲרָ֑ם of Mesopotamia ʾăram nahărayim וַתָּ֣עָז prevailed ʿāzaz יָד֔וֹ and his hand yād עַ֖ל against ʿal כּוּשַׁ֥ן רִשְׁעָתָֽיִם׃ Chushan-rishathaim. kûšan rišʿātayim

וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט had rest šāqaṭ הָאָ֖רֶץ And the land ʾereṣ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים forty ʾarbāʿîm שָׁנָ֑ה years. šāne וַיָּ֖מָת died. mût עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל And Othniel ʿotnîʾēl בֶּן the son bēn קְנַֽז׃ of Kenaz qĕnaz

וַיֹּסִ֙פוּ֙ again yāsap בְּנֵ֣י And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl לַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת did ʿāśâ הָרַ֖ע evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord: yĕhōwâ וַיְחַזֵּ֨ק strengthened ḥāzaq יְהוָ֜ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt עֶגְל֤וֹן Eglon ʿeglôn מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek מוֹאָב֙ of Moab môʾāb עַל against ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl עַ֛ל because ʿal כִּֽי kî עָשׂ֥וּ they had done ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt הָרַ֖ע evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֥י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיֶּֽאֱסֹ֣ף And he gathered ʾāsap אֵלָ֔יו unto ʾēl אֶת him ʾēt בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn עַמּ֖וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn וַֽעֲמָלֵ֑ק and Amalek, ʿămālēq וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ and went hālak וַיַּךְ֙ and smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיִּֽירְשׁ֖וּ and possessed yāraš אֶת ʾēt עִ֥יר the city ʿîr הַתְּמָרִֽים׃ of palm trees. tāmār

וַיַּֽעַבְד֤וּ served ʿābad בְנֵֽי So the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת ʾēt עֶגְל֣וֹן Eglon ʿeglôn מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek מוֹאָ֔ב of Moab môʾāb שְׁמוֹנֶ֥ה eighteen šĕmōne עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה ʿāśār שָׁנָֽה׃ years. šāne

וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ cried zāʿaq בְנֵֽי But when the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָה֒ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּקֶם֩ raised them up qûm יְהוָ֨ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לָהֶ֜ם מוֹשִׁ֗יעַ a deliverer, yāšaʿ אֶת ʾēt אֵה֤וּד Ehud ʾēhûd בֶּן the son bēn גֵּרָא֙ of Gera, gērāʾ בֶּן הַיְמִינִ֔י a Benjamite, ben yĕmînî אִ֥ישׁ a man ʾîš אִטֵּ֖ר lefthanded: ʾiṭṭēr יַד yād יְמִינ֑וֹ yāmîn וַיִּשְׁלְח֨וּ sent šālaḥ בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl בְּיָדוֹ֙ and by him yād מִנְחָ֔ה a present minḥâ לְעֶגְל֖וֹן unto Eglon ʿeglôn מֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek מוֹאָֽב׃ of Moab. môʾāb

וַיַּעַשׂ֩ made ʿāśâ ל֨וֹ אֵה֜וּד But Ehud ʾēhûd חֶ֗רֶב him a dagger ḥereb וְלָ֛הּ שְׁנֵ֥י which had two šĕnayim פֵי֖וֹת edges, pēyâ גֹּ֣מֶד of a cubit gōmed אָרְכָּ֑הּ length; ʾōrek וַיַּחְגֹּ֤ר and he did gird ḥāgar אוֹתָהּ֙ ʾēt מִתַּ֣חַת it under taḥat לְמַדָּ֔יו his raiment mad עַ֖ל upon ʿal יֶ֥רֶךְ thigh. yārēk יְמִינֽוֹ׃ his right yāmîn

וַיַּקְרֵב֙ And he brought qārab אֶת ʾēt הַמִּנְחָ֔ה the present minḥâ לְעֶגְל֖וֹן unto Eglon ʿeglôn מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek מוֹאָ֑ב of Moab: môʾāb וְעֶגְל֕וֹן and Eglon ʿeglôn אִ֥ישׁ man. ʾîš בָּרִ֖יא fat bārîʾ מְאֹֽד׃ a very mĕʾōd

וַֽיְהִי֙ hāyâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר And when ʾăšer כִּלָּ֔ה he had made an end kālâ לְהַקְרִ֖יב to offer qārab אֶת ʾēt הַמִּנְחָ֑ה the present, minḥâ וַיְשַׁלַּח֙ he sent away šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֔ם the people ʿam נֹֽשְׂאֵ֖י that bare nāśāʾ הַמִּנְחָֽה׃ the present. minḥâ

וְה֣וּא But he hûʾ שָׁ֗ב himself turned again šûb מִן from min הַפְּסִילִים֙ the quarries pĕsîl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer אֶת by ʾēt הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל Gilgal, gilgāl וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and said, ʾāmar דְּבַר errand dābār סֵ֥תֶר I have a secret sēter לִ֛י אֵלֶ֖יךָ ʾēl הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ unto thee, O king: melek וַיֹּ֣אמֶר who said, ʾāmar הָ֔ס Keep silence. hāsâ וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙ by him went out yāṣāʾ מֵֽעָלָ֔יו from him. ʿal כָּל And all kōl הָעֹֽמְדִ֖ים that stood ʿāmad עָלָֽיו׃ ʿal

וְאֵה֣וּד׀ And Ehud ʾēhûd בָּ֣א came bôʾ אֵלָ֗יו unto ʾēl וְהֽוּא him; and he hûʾ יֹ֠שֵׁב was sitting yāšab בַּֽעֲלִיַּ֨ת parlour, ʿăliyyâ הַמְּקֵרָ֤ה in a summer mĕqērâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer לוֹ֙ לְבַדּ֔וֹ he had for himself alone. bad וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar אֵה֔וּד And Ehud ʾēhûd דְּבַר I have a message dābār אֱלֹהִ֥ים from God ʾĕlōhîm לִ֖י אֵלֶ֑יךָ unto ʾēl וַיָּ֖קָם thee. And he arose qûm מֵעַ֥ל out of ʿal הַכִּסֵּֽא׃ seat. kissēʾ

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח put forth šālaḥ אֵהוּד֙ And Ehud ʾēhûd אֶת ʾēt יַ֣ד hand, yād שְׂמֹאל֔וֹ his left śĕmōwl וַיִּקַּח֙ and took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt הַחֶ֔רֶב the dagger ḥereb מֵעַ֖ל from ʿal יֶ֣רֶךְ thigh, yārēk יְמִינ֑וֹ his right yāmîn וַיִּתְקָעֶ֖הָ and thrust tāqaʿ בְּבִטְנֽוֹ׃ it into his belly: beṭen

וַיָּבֹ֨א went in bôʾ גַֽם also gam הַנִּצָּ֜ב And the haft niṣṣāb אַחַ֣ר after ʾaḥar הַלַּ֗הַב the blade; lahab וַיִּסְגֹּ֤ר closed sāgar הַחֵ֙לֶב֙ and the fat ḥeleb בְּעַ֣ד upon bĕʿad הַלַּ֔הַב the blade, lahab כִּ֣י so that kî לֹ֥א he could not lōʾ שָׁלַ֛ף draw šālap הַחֶ֖רֶב the dagger ḥereb מִבִּטְנ֑וֹ out of his belly; beṭen וַיֵּצֵ֖א came out. yāṣāʾ הַֽפַּרְשְׁדֹֽנָה׃ and the dirt paršĕdōn

וַיֵּצֵ֥א went forth yāṣāʾ אֵה֖וּד Then Ehud ʾēhûd הַֽמִּסְדְּר֑וֹנָה through the porch, misdĕrôn וַיִּסְגֹּ֞ר and shut sāgar דַּלְת֧וֹת the doors delet הָֽעֲלִיָּ֛ה of the parlour ʿăliyyâ בַּֽעֲד֖וֹ upon him, bĕʿad וְנָעָֽל׃ and locked them. nāʿal

וְה֤וּא When he hûʾ יָצָא֙ was gone out, yāṣāʾ וַֽעֲבָדָ֣יו his servants ʿebed בָּ֔אוּ came; bôʾ וַיִּרְא֕וּ and when they saw rāʾâ וְהִנֵּ֛ה that, behold, hinnē דַּלְת֥וֹת the doors delet הָֽעֲלִיָּ֖ה of the parlour ʿăliyyâ נְעֻל֑וֹת locked, nāʿal וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ they said, ʾāmar אַ֣ךְ Surely ʾak מֵסִ֥יךְ covereth sākak ה֛וּא he hûʾ אֶת ʾēt רַגְלָ֖יו his feet regel בַּֽחֲדַ֥ר chamber. ḥeder הַמְּקֵרָֽה׃ in his summer mĕqērâ

וַיָּחִ֣ילוּ And they tarried ḥûl עַד till ʿad בּ֔וֹשׁ they were ashamed: bûš וְהִנֵּ֛ה and, behold, hinnē אֵינֶ֥נּוּ not ʾayin פֹתֵ֖חַ he opened pātaḥ דַּלְת֣וֹת the doors delet הָֽעֲלִיָּ֑ה of the parlour; ʿăliyyâ וַיִּקְח֤וּ therefore they took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt הַמַּפְתֵּ֙חַ֙ a key, maptēaḥ וַיִּפְתָּ֔חוּ and opened pātaḥ וְהִנֵּה֙ and, behold, hinnē אֲדֹ֣נֵיהֶ֔ם their lord ʾādôn נֹפֵ֥ל fallen down nāpal אַ֖רְצָה on the earth. ʾereṣ מֵֽת׃ dead mût

וְאֵה֥וּד And Ehud ʾēhûd נִמְלַ֖ט escaped mālaṭ עַ֣ד while ʿad הִֽתְמַהְמְהָ֑ם they tarried, māhah וְהוּא֙ hûʾ עָבַ֣ר and passed beyond ʿābar אֶת ʾēt הַפְּסִילִ֔ים the quarries, pĕsîl וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט and escaped mālaṭ הַשְּׂעִירָֽתָה׃ unto Seirath. śĕʿîrâ

וַיְהִ֣י And it came to pass, hāyâ בְּבוֹא֔וֹ when he was come, bôʾ וַיִּתְקַ֥ע that he blew tāqaʿ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר a trumpet šôpār בְּהַ֣ר in the mountain har אֶפְרָ֑יִם of Ephraim, ʾeprayim וַיֵּֽרְד֨וּ went down yārad עִמּ֧וֹ with ʿim בְנֵֽי and the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl מִן him from min הָהָ֖ר the mount, har וְה֥וּא and he hûʾ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ before them. pānîm

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֲלֵהֶם֙ unto ʾēl רִדְפ֣וּ them, Follow rādap אַֽחֲרַ֔י after ʾaḥar כִּֽי me: for kî נָתַ֨ן hath delivered nātan יְהוָ֧ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt אֹֽיְבֵיכֶ֛ם your enemies ʾōyēb אֶת ʾēt מוֹאָ֖ב the Moabites môʾāb בְּיֶדְכֶ֑ם into your hand. yād וַיֵּֽרְד֣וּ And they went down yārad אַֽחֲרָ֗יו after ʾaḥar וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ him, and took lākad אֶֽת ʾēt מַעְבְּר֤וֹת the fords maʿăbār הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ of Jordan yardēn לְמוֹאָ֔ב toward Moab, môʾāb וְלֹֽא not lōʾ נָתְנ֥וּ and suffered nātan אִ֖ישׁ a man ʾîš לַֽעֲבֹֽר׃ to pass over. ʿābar

וַיַּכּ֨וּ And they slew nākâ אֶת of ʾēt מוֹאָ֜ב Moab môʾāb בָּעֵ֣ת time ʿēt הַהִ֗יא at that hûʾ כַּֽעֲשֶׂ֤רֶת about ten ʿeśer אֲלָפִים֙ thousand ʾelep אִ֔ישׁ men, ʾîš כָּל all kōl שָׁמֵ֖ן lusty, šāmēn וְכָל and all kōl אִ֣ישׁ men ʾîš חָ֑יִל of valour; ḥayil וְלֹ֥א not lōʾ נִמְלַ֖ט and there escaped mālaṭ אִֽישׁ׃ a man. ʾîš

וַתִּכָּנַ֤ע was subdued kānaʿ מוֹאָב֙ So Moab môʾāb בַּיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַה֔וּא that hûʾ תַּ֖חַת under taḥat יַ֣ד the hand yād יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט had rest šāqaṭ הָאָ֖רֶץ And the land ʾereṣ שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים fourscore šĕmōnîm שָׁנָֽה׃ years. šāne

וְאַֽחֲרָ֤יו And after ʾaḥar הָיָה֙ him was hāyâ שַׁמְגַּ֣ר Shamgar šamgar בֶּן the son bēn עֲנָ֔ת of Anath, ʿănāt וַיַּ֤ךְ which slew nākâ אֶת of ʾēt פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ the Philistines pĕlištî שֵֽׁשׁ six šēš מֵא֣וֹת hundred mēʾâ אִ֔ישׁ men ʾîš בְּמַלְמַ֖ד goad: malmād הַבָּקָ֑ר with an ox bāqār וַיּ֥וֹשַׁע delivered yāšaʿ גַּם also gam ה֖וּא and he hûʾ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl
