וַיַּ֧עַל came up ʿālâ מַלְאַךְ And an angel mălʾok יְהוָ֛ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ מִן from min הַגִּלְגָּ֖ל Gilgal gilgāl אֶל to ʾēl הַבֹּכִ֑ים Bochim, bōkîm וַיֹּאמֶר֩ and said, ʾāmar אַֽעֲלֶ֨ה I made you to go up ʿālâ אֶתְכֶ֜ם ʾēt מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם out of Egypt, miṣrayim וָֽאָבִ֤יא and have brought bôʾ אֶתְכֶם֙ ʾēt אֶל you unto ʾēl הָאָ֗רֶץ the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֤ר which ʾăšer נִשְׁבַּ֙עְתִּי֙ I sware šābaʿ לַאֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם unto your fathers; ʾāb וָֽאֹמַ֕ר and I said, ʾāmar לֹֽא lōʾ אָפֵ֧ר break pārar בְּרִיתִ֛י my covenant bĕrît אִתְּכֶ֖ם with you. ʾēt לְעוֹלָֽם׃ I will never ʿôlām

וְאַתֶּ֗ם And ye ʾattâ לֹֽא no lōʾ תִכְרְת֤וּ shall make kārat בְרִית֙ league bĕrît לְיֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ with the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֣רֶץ land; ʾereṣ הַזֹּ֔את of this zōt מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם their altars: mizbēaḥ תִּתֹּצ֑וּן ye shall throw down nātaṣ וְלֹֽא but ye have not lōʾ שְׁמַעְתֶּ֥ם obeyed šāmaʿ בְּקוֹלִ֖י my voice: qôl מַה why mâ זֹּ֥את this? zōt עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ have ye done ʿāśâ

וְגַ֣ם Wherefore I also gam אָמַ֔רְתִּי said, ʾāmar לֹֽא I will not lōʾ אֲגָרֵ֥שׁ drive them out gāraš אוֹתָ֖ם ʾēt מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם from before pānîm וְהָי֤וּ you; but they shall be hāyâ לָכֶם֙ לְצִדִּ֔ים in your sides, ṣad וֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם and their gods ʾĕlōhîm יִֽהְי֥וּ shall be hāyâ לָכֶ֖ם לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃ a snare unto you. môqēš

וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass, hāyâ כְּדַבֵּ֞ר spake dābar מַלְאַ֤ךְ when the angel mălʾok יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֣ים words dābār הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle אֶֽל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl בְּנֵ֖י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ lifted up nāśāʾ הָעָ֛ם that the people ʿam אֶת ʾēt קוֹלָ֖ם their voice, qôl וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ and wept. bākâ

וַֽיִּקְרְא֛וּ And they called qārāʾ שֵֽׁם the name šēm הַמָּק֥וֹם place māqôm הַה֖וּא of that hûʾ בֹּכִ֑ים Bochim: bōkîm וַיִּזְבְּחוּ and they sacrificed zābaḥ שָׁ֖ם there šām לַֽיהוָֽה׃ unto the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח go, šālaḥ יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ And when Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ אֶת had let ʾēt הָעָ֑ם the people ʿam וַיֵּֽלְכ֧וּ went hālak בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אִ֥ישׁ every man ʾîš לְנַֽחֲלָת֖וֹ unto his inheritance naḥălâ לָרֶ֥שֶׁת to possess yāraš אֶת ʾēt הָאָֽרֶץ׃ the land. ʾereṣ

וַיַּֽעַבְד֤וּ served ʿābad הָעָם֙ And the people ʿam אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ כֹּ֖ל all kōl יְמֵ֣י the days yôm יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ of Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ וְכֹ֣ל׀ and all kōl יְמֵ֣י the days yôm הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים of the elders zāqēn אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer הֶֽאֱרִ֤יכוּ ʾārak יָמִים֙ outlived yôm אַֽחֲרֵ֣י ʾaḥar יְהוֹשׁ֔וּעַ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ אֲשֶׁ֣ר who ʾăšer רָא֗וּ had seen rāʾâ אֵ֣ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl מַֽעֲשֵׂ֤ה works maʿăśe יְהוָה֙ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ הַגָּד֔וֹל the great gādôl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה he did ʿāśâ לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ for Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיָּ֛מָת died, mût יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בִּן the son bēn נ֖וּן of Nun, nûn עֶ֣בֶד the servant ʿebed יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ בֶּן old. bēn מֵאָ֥ה an hundred mēʾâ וָעֶ֖שֶׂר and ten ʿeśer שָׁנִֽים׃ years šāne

וַיִּקְבְּר֤וּ And they buried qābar אוֹתוֹ֙ ʾēt בִּגְב֣וּל him in the border gĕbûl נַֽחֲלָת֔וֹ of his inheritance naḥălâ בְּתִמְנַת חֶ֖רֶס in Timnath-heres, timnat ḥeres בְּהַ֣ר in the mount har אֶפְרָ֑יִם of Ephraim, ʾeprayim מִצְּפ֖וֹן on the north side ṣāpôn לְהַר of the hill har גָּֽעַשׁ׃ Gaash. gaʿaš

וְגַם֙ And also gam כָּל all kōl הַדּ֣וֹר generation dôr הַה֔וּא that hûʾ נֶֽאֶסְפ֖וּ were gathered ʾāsap אֶל unto ʾēl אֲבוֹתָ֑יו their fathers: ʾāb וַיָּקָם֩ and there arose qûm דּ֨וֹר generation dôr אַחֵ֜ר another ʾaḥēr אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם after ʾaḥar אֲשֶׁ֤ר them, which ʾăšer לֹא not lōʾ יָֽדְעוּ֙ knew yādaʿ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְגַם֙ nor yet gam אֶת ʾēt הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה the works maʿăśe אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה he had done ʿāśâ לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ for Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֧וּ did ʿāśâ בְנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת ʾēt הָרַ֖ע evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיַּֽעַבְד֖וּ and served ʿābad אֶת ʾēt הַבְּעָלִֽים׃ Baalim: baʿal

וַיַּֽעַזְב֞וּ And they forsook ʿāzab אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֣ה׀ the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm אֲבוֹתָ֗ם of their fathers, ʾāb הַמּוֹצִ֣יא which brought them out yāṣāʾ אוֹתָם֮ ʾēt מֵאֶ֣רֶץ of the land ʾereṣ מִצְרַיִם֒ of Egypt, miṣrayim וַיֵּֽלְכ֞וּ and followed hālak אַֽחֲרֵ֣י׀ ʾaḥar אֱלֹהִ֣ים gods, ʾĕlōhîm אֲחֵרִ֗ים other ʾaḥēr מֵֽאֱלֹהֵ֤י of the gods ʾĕlōhîm הָֽעַמִּים֙ of the people ʿam אֲשֶׁר֙ that ʾăšer סְבִיב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם round about sābîb וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ them, and bowed themselves šāḥâ לָהֶ֑ם וַיַּכְעִ֖סוּ unto them, and provoked kaʿas אֶת ʾēt יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord to anger. yĕhōwâ

וַיַּֽעַזְב֖וּ And they forsook ʿāzab אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיַּֽעַבְד֥וּ and served ʿābad לַבַּ֖עַל Baal baʿal וְלָֽעַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת׃ and Ashtaroth. ʿaštārôt

וַיִּֽחַר was hot ḥārâ אַ֤ף And the anger ʾap יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל against Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽיִּתְּנֵם֙ and he delivered nātan בְּיַד them into the hands yād שֹׁסִ֔ים of spoilers šāsâ וַיָּשֹׁ֖סּוּ that spoiled šāsas אוֹתָ֑ם ʾēt וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵ֞ם them, and he sold mākar בְּיַ֤ד them into the hands yād אֽוֹיְבֵיהֶם֙ of their enemies ʾōyēb מִסָּבִ֔יב round about, sābîb וְלֹֽא not lōʾ יָכְל֣וּ so that they could yākōl ע֔וֹד any longer ʿôd לַֽעֲמֹ֖ד stand ʿāmad לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm אֽוֹיְבֵיהֶֽם׃ their enemies. ʾōyēb

בְּכֹ֣ל׀ Whithersoever kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer יָֽצְא֗וּ they went out, yāṣāʾ יַד the hand yād יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ הָֽיְתָה was hāyâ בָּ֣ם לְרָעָ֔ה against them for evil, raʿ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ as ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֣ר had said, dābar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וְכַֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר and as ʾăšer נִשְׁבַּ֥ע had sworn šābaʿ יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לָהֶ֑ם וַיֵּ֥צֶר distressed. yāṣar לָהֶ֖ם מְאֹֽד׃ unto them: and they were greatly mĕʾōd

וַיָּ֥קֶם raised up qûm יְהוָ֖ה Nevertheless the Lord yĕhōwâ שֹֽׁפְטִ֑ים judges, šāpaṭ וַיּ֣וֹשִׁיע֔וּם which delivered yāšaʿ מִיַּ֖ד them out of the hand yād שֹֽׁסֵיהֶֽם׃ of those that spoiled them. šāsâ

וְגַ֤ם And yet gam אֶל unto ʾēl שֹֽׁפְטֵיהֶם֙ their judges, šāpaṭ לֹ֣א they would not lōʾ שָׁמֵ֔עוּ hearken šāmaʿ כִּ֣י but kî זָנ֗וּ they went a whoring zānâ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ after ʾaḥar אֱלֹהִ֣ים gods, ʾĕlōhîm אֲחֵרִ֔ים other ʾaḥēr וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ and bowed themselves šāḥâ לָהֶ֑ם סָ֣רוּ unto them: they turned sûr מַהֵ֗ר quickly mahēr מִן out of min הַדֶּ֜רֶךְ the way derek אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer הָֽלְכ֧וּ walked in, hālak אֲבוֹתָ֛ם their fathers ʾāb לִשְׁמֹ֥עַ obeying šāmaʿ מִצְוֹת the commandments miṣwâ יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord; yĕhōwâ לֹא not lōʾ עָ֥שׂוּ they did ʿāśâ כֵֽן׃ so. kēn

וְכִֽי And when kî הֵקִ֨ים raised qûm יְהוָ֥ה׀ the Lord yĕhōwâ לָהֶם֮ שֹֽׁפְטִים֒ them up judges, šāpaṭ וְהָיָ֤ה was hāyâ יְהוָה֙ then the Lord yĕhōwâ עִם with ʿim הַשֹּׁפֵ֔ט the judge, šāpaṭ וְהֽוֹשִׁיעָם֙ and delivered yāšaʿ מִיַּ֣ד them out of the hand yād אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם of their enemies ʾōyēb כֹּ֖ל all kōl יְמֵ֣י the days yôm הַשּׁוֹפֵ֑ט of the judge: šāpaṭ כִּֽי for kî יִנָּחֵ֤ם it repented nāḥam יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ מִנַּֽאֲקָתָ֔ם of their groanings nĕʾāqâ מִפְּנֵ֥י because pānîm לֹֽחֲצֵיהֶ֖ם by reason of them that oppressed lāḥaṣ וְדֹֽחֲקֵיהֶֽם׃ them and vexed them. dāḥaq

וְהָיָ֣ה׀ And it came to pass, hāyâ בְּמ֣וֹת was dead, mût הַשּׁוֹפֵ֗ט when the judge šāpaṭ יָשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ they returned, šûb וְהִשְׁחִ֣יתוּ and corrupted šāḥat מֵֽאֲבוֹתָ֔ם more than their fathers, ʾāb לָלֶ֗כֶת in following hālak אַֽחֲרֵי֙ ʾaḥar אֱלֹהִ֣ים gods ʾĕlōhîm אֲחֵרִ֔ים other ʾaḥēr לְעָבְדָ֖ם to serve ʿābad וּלְהִשְׁתַּֽחֲוֹ֣ת them, and to bow down šāḥâ לָהֶ֑ם לֹ֤א not lōʾ הִפִּ֙ילוּ֙ unto them; they ceased nāpal מִמַּ֣עַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם from their own doings, maʿălāl וּמִדַּרְכָּ֖ם way. derek הַקָּשָֽׁה׃ nor from their stubborn qāše

וַיִּֽחַר was hot ḥārâ אַ֥ף And the anger ʾap יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל against Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and he said, ʾāmar יַעַן֩ Because yaʿan אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer עָֽבְר֜וּ hath transgressed ʿābar הַגּ֣וֹי people gôy הַזֶּ֗ה this ze אֶת ʾēt בְּרִיתִי֙ my covenant bĕrît אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer צִוִּ֣יתִי I commanded ṣāwâ אֶת ʾēt אֲבוֹתָ֔ם their fathers, ʾāb וְלֹ֥א and have not lōʾ שָֽׁמְע֖וּ hearkened šāmaʿ לְקוֹלִֽי׃ unto my voice; qôl

גַּם also gam אֲנִי֙ I ʾănî לֹ֣א will not lōʾ אוֹסִ֔יף henceforth yāsap לְהוֹרִ֥ישׁ drive out yāraš אִ֖ישׁ any ʾîš מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם from before pānîm מִן them of min הַגּוֹיִ֛ם the nations gôy אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer עָזַ֥ב left ʿāzab יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וַיָּמֹֽת׃ when he died: mût

לְמַ֛עַן That maʿan נַסּ֥וֹת through them I may prove nāsâ בָּ֖ם אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl הֲשֹֽׁמְרִ֣ים will keep šāmar הֵם֩ whether they hēm אֶת ʾēt דֶּ֨רֶךְ the way derek יְהוָ֜ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ לָלֶ֣כֶת to walk hālak בָּ֗ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר therein, as ʾăšer שָֽׁמְר֥וּ did keep šāmar אֲבוֹתָ֖ם their fathers ʾāb אִם or ʾim לֹֽא׃ not. lōʾ

וַיַּנַּ֤ח left yānaḥ יְהוָה֙ Therefore the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt הַגּוֹיִ֣ם nations, gôy הָאֵ֔לֶּה those ʾēlle לְבִלְתִּ֥י without biltî הֽוֹרִישָׁ֖ם driving them out yāraš מַהֵ֑ר hastily; mahēr וְלֹ֥א neither lōʾ נְתָנָ֖ם delivered nātan בְּיַד he them into the hand yād יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ of Joshua. yĕhôšûaʿ
