וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֤ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ אַל not, ʾal תִּירָ֣א Fear yārēʾ וְאַל neither ʾal תֵּחָ֔ת be thou dismayed: ḥātat קַ֣ח take lāqaḥ עִמְּךָ֗ with ʿim אֵ֚ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl עַ֣ם the people ʿam הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה of war milḥāmâ וְק֖וּם thee, and arise, qûm עֲלֵ֣ה go up ʿālâ הָעָ֑י to Ai: ʿay רְאֵ֣ה׀ see, rāʾâ נָתַ֣תִּי I have given nātan בְיָֽדְךָ֗ into thy hand yād אֶת ʾēt מֶ֤לֶךְ the king melek הָעַי֙ of Ai, ʿay וְאֶת ʾēt עַמּ֔וֹ and his people, ʿam וְאֶת ʾēt עִיר֖וֹ and his city, ʿîr וְאֶת ʾēt אַרְצֽוֹ׃ and his land: ʾereṣ

וְעָשִׂ֨יתָ And thou shalt do ʿāśâ לָעַ֜י to Ai ʿay וּלְמַלְכָּ֗הּ and her king melek כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר as ʾăšer עָשִׂ֤יתָ thou didst ʿāśâ לִֽירִיחוֹ֙ unto Jericho yĕrîḥô וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ and her king: melek רַק only raq שְׁלָלָ֥הּ the spoil šālāl וּבְהֶמְתָּ֖הּ thereof, and the cattle bĕhēmâ תָּבֹ֣זּוּ thereof, shall ye take for a prey bāzaz לָכֶ֑ם שִׂים unto yourselves: lay śûm לְךָ֥ אֹרֵ֛ב thee an ambush ʾārab לָעִ֖יר for the city ʿîr מֵאַֽחֲרֶֽיהָ׃ behind it. ʾaḥar

וַיָּ֧קָם arose, qûm יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ So Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וְכָל and all kōl עַ֥ם the people ʿam הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה of war, milḥāmâ לַֽעֲל֣וֹת to go up ʿālâ הָעָ֑י against Ai: ʿay וַיִּבְחַ֣ר chose out bāḥar יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ and Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים thirty šĕlôšîm אֶ֤לֶף thousand ʾelep אִישׁ֙ men ʾîš גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י mighty gibbôr הַחַ֔יִל of valour, ḥayil וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֖ם and sent them away šālaḥ לָֽיְלָה׃ by night. layil

וַיְצַ֨ו And he commanded ṣāwâ אֹתָ֜ם ʾēt לֵאמֹ֗ר them, saying, ʾāmar רְ֠אוּ Behold, rāʾâ אַתֶּ֞ם ye ʾattâ אֹֽרְבִ֤ים shall lie in wait ʾārab לָעִיר֙ against the city, ʿîr מֵאַֽחֲרֵ֣י behind ʾaḥar הָעִ֔יר the city: ʿîr אַל not ʾal תַּרְחִ֥יקוּ go rāḥaq מִן far from min הָעִ֖יר the city, ʿîr מְאֹ֑ד very mĕʾōd וִֽהְיִיתֶ֥ם but be hāyâ כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם ye all kōl נְכֹנִֽים׃ ready: kûn

וַֽאֲנִ֗י And I, ʾănî וְכָל and all kōl הָעָם֙ the people ʿam אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer אִתִּ֔י with ʾēt נִקְרַ֖ב me, will approach qārab אֶל unto ʾēl הָעִ֑יר the city: ʿîr וְהָיָ֗ה and it shall come to pass, hāyâ כִּֽי when kî יֵצְא֤וּ they come out yāṣāʾ לִקְרָאתֵ֙נוּ֙ against qirʾâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר us, as ʾăšer בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֔ה at the first, riʾšôn וְנַ֖סְנוּ that we will flee nûs לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ before them, pānîm

וְיָֽצְא֣וּ (For they will come out yāṣāʾ אַֽחֲרֵ֗ינוּ after ʾaḥar עַ֣ד us) till ʿad הַתִּיקֵ֤נוּ we have drawn nātaq אוֹתָם֙ ʾēt מִן them from min הָעִ֔יר the city; ʿîr כִּ֣י for kî יֹֽאמְר֔וּ they will say, ʾāmar נָסִ֣ים They flee nûs לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ before pānîm כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר us, as ʾăšer בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה at the first: riʾšôn וְנַ֖סְנוּ therefore we will flee nûs לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ before them. pānîm

וְאַתֶּ֗ם Then ye ʾattâ תָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ shall rise up qûm מֵהָ֣אוֹרֵ֔ב from the ambush, ʾārab וְהֽוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֖ם and seize upon yāraš אֶת ʾēt הָעִ֑יר the city: ʿîr וּנְתָנָ֛הּ will deliver nātan יְהוָ֥ה for the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם your God ʾĕlōhîm בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃ it into your hand. yād

וְהָיָ֞ה And it shall be, hāyâ כְּתָפְשְׂכֶ֣ם when ye have taken tāpaś אֶת ʾēt הָעִ֗יר the city, ʿîr תַּצִּ֤יתוּ ye shall set yāṣat אֶת ʾēt הָעִיר֙ the city ʿîr בָּאֵ֔שׁ on fire: ʾēš כִּדְבַ֥ר according to the commandment dābār יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ תַּֽעֲשׂ֑וּ shall ye do. ʿāśâ רְא֖וּ See, rāʾâ צִוִּ֥יתִי I have commanded you. ṣāwâ אֶתְכֶֽם׃ ʾēt

וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֣ם therefore sent them forth: šālaḥ יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ and they went hālak אֶל to ʾēl הַמַּאְרָ֔ב lie in ambush, maʾărāb וַיֵּֽשְׁב֗וּ and abode yāšab בֵּ֧ין between bên בֵּֽית אֵ֛ל Beth-el bêt ʾēl וּבֵ֥ין bên הָעַ֖י and Ai, ʿay מִיָּ֣ם on the west side yām לָעָ֑י of Ai: ʿay וַיָּ֧לֶן lodged lûn יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ but Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה night layil הַה֖וּא that hûʾ בְּת֥וֹךְ among tāwek הָעָֽם׃ the people. ʿam

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤ם rose up early šākam יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר in the morning, bōqer וַיִּפְקֹ֖ד and numbered pāqad אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֑ם the people, ʿam וַיַּ֨עַל and went up, ʿālâ ה֜וּא he hûʾ וְזִקְנֵ֧י and the elders zāqēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam הָעָֽי׃ to Ai. ʿay

וְכָל And all kōl הָעָ֨ם the people, ʿam הַמִּלְחָמָ֜ה of war milḥāmâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer אִתּ֗וֹ with ʾēt עָלוּ֙ him, went up, ʿālâ וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֔וּ and drew nigh, nāgaš וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ and came bôʾ נֶ֣גֶד before neged הָעִ֑יר the city, ʿîr וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ and pitched ḥānâ מִצְּפ֣וֹן on the north side ṣāpôn לָעַ֔י of Ai: ʿay וְהַגַּ֖י now a valley gayʾ בֵּינָ֥ו between bên וּבֵין bên הָעָֽי׃ them and Ai. ʿay

וַיִּקַּ֕ח And he took lāqaḥ כַּֽחֲמֵ֥שֶׁת about five ḥāmēš אֲלָפִ֖ים thousand ʾelep אִ֑ישׁ men, ʾîš וַיָּ֨שֶׂם and set śûm אוֹתָ֜ם ʾēt אֹרֵ֗ב them to lie in ambush ʾārab בֵּ֧ין between bên בֵּֽית אֵ֛ל Beth-el bêt ʾēl וּבֵ֥ין bên הָעַ֖י and Ai, city. ʿay מִיָּ֥ם on the west side yām לָעִֽיר׃ of the ʿîr

וַיָּשִׂ֨ימוּ And when they had set śûm הָעָ֜ם the people, ʿam אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה the host maḥăne אֲשֶׁר֙ that ʾăšer מִצְּפ֣וֹן on the north ṣāpôn לָעִ֔יר of the city, ʿîr וְאֶת ʾēt עֲקֵב֖וֹ and their liers in wait ʿāqēb מִיָּ֣ם on the west yām לָעִ֑יר of the city, ʿîr וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ went hālak יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה night layil הַה֖וּא that hûʾ בְּת֥וֹךְ into the midst tāwek הָעֵֽמֶק׃ of the valley. ʿēmeq

וַיְהִ֞י And it came to pass, hāyâ כִּרְא֣וֹת saw rāʾâ מֶֽלֶךְ when the king melek הָעַ֗י of Ai ʿay וַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּ that they hasted māhar וַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּ and rose up early, šākam וַיֵּֽצְא֣וּ went out yāṣāʾ אַנְשֵֽׁי and the men ʾĕnôš הָעִ֣יר of the city ʿîr לִקְרַֽאת against qirʾâ יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל Israel yiśrāʾēl לַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞ה to battle, milḥāmâ ה֧וּא he hûʾ וְכָל and all kōl עַמּ֛וֹ his people, ʿam לַמּוֹעֵ֖ד at a time appointed, môʿēd לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm הָֽעֲרָבָ֑ה the plain; ʿărābâ וְהוּא֙ but he hûʾ לֹ֣א not lōʾ יָדַ֔ע wist yādaʿ כִּֽי that kî אֹרֵ֥ב liers in ambush ʾārab ל֖וֹ מֵאַֽחֲרֵ֥י against him behind ʾaḥar הָעִֽיר׃ the city. ʿîr

וַיִּנָּֽגְע֛וּ made as if they were beaten nāgaʿ יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וְכָל and all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם before pānîm וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ them, and fled nûs דֶּ֥רֶךְ by the way derek הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ of the wilderness. midbār

וַיִּזָּֽעֲק֗וּ were called together zāʿaq כָּל And all kōl הָעָם֙ the people ʿam אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בָּעַ֔יר in Ai ʿîr לִרְדֹּ֖ף to pursue rādap אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם after ʾaḥar וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ them: and they pursued rādap אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after ʾaḥar יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ וַיִּנָּֽתְק֖וּ and were drawn away nātaq מִן from min הָעִֽיר׃ the city. ʿîr

וְלֹֽא And there was not lōʾ נִשְׁאַ֣ר left šāʾar אִ֗ישׁ a man ʾîš בָּעַי֙ in Ai ʿay וּבֵ֣ית אֵ֔ל or Beth-el, bêt ʾēl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer לֹֽא lōʾ יָצְא֖וּ went not out yāṣāʾ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after ʾaḥar יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽעַזְב֤וּ and they left ʿāzab אֶת ʾēt הָעִיר֙ the city ʿîr פְּתוּחָ֔ה open, pātaḥ וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ and pursued rādap אַֽחֲרֵ֥י after ʾaḥar יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֜ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ נְ֠טֵה Stretch out nāṭâ בַּכִּיד֤וֹן the spear kîdôn אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בְּיָֽדְךָ֙ in thy hand yād אֶל toward ʾēl הָעַ֔י Ai; ʿay כִּ֥י for kî בְיָֽדְךָ֖ it into thine hand. yād אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה I will give nātan וַיֵּ֧ט stretched out nāṭâ יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בַּכִּיד֥וֹן the spear kîdôn אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בְּיָד֖וֹ in his hand yād אֶל toward ʾēl הָעִֽיר׃ the city. ʿîr

וְהָֽאוֹרֵ֡ב And the ambush ʾārab קָם֩ arose qûm מְהֵרָ֨ה quickly mĕhērâ מִמְּקוֹמ֤וֹ out of their place, māqôm וַיָּר֙וּצוּ֙ and they ran rûṣ כִּנְט֣וֹת as soon as he had stretched out nāṭâ יָד֔וֹ his hand: yād וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ and they entered bôʾ הָעִ֖יר into the city, ʿîr וַֽיִּלְכְּד֑וּהָ and took lākad וַֽיְמַהֲר֔וּ it, and hasted māhar וַיַּצִּ֥יתוּ and set yāṣat אֶת ʾēt הָעִ֖יר the city ʿîr בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ on fire. ʾēš

וַיִּפְנ֣וּ looked pānâ אַנְשֵׁי֩ And when the men ʾîš הָעַ֨י of Ai ʿay אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם behind ʾaḥar וַיִּרְא֗וּ them, they saw, rāʾâ וְהִנֵּ֨ה and, behold, hinnē עָלָ֜ה ascended up ʿālâ עֲשַׁ֤ן the smoke ʿāšān הָעִיר֙ of the city ʿîr הַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָה to heaven, šāmayim וְלֹֽא no lōʾ הָיָ֨ה and they had hāyâ בָהֶ֥ם יָדַ֛יִם power yād לָנ֖וּס to flee nûs הֵ֣נָּה this way hēnnâ וָהֵ֑נָּה or that way: hēnnâ וְהָעָם֙ and the people ʿam הַנָּ֣ס that fled nûs הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר to the wilderness midbār נֶהְפַּ֖ךְ turned back hāpak אֶל upon ʾēl הָֽרוֹדֵֽף׃ the pursuers. rādap

וִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ And when Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וְכָל and all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל Israel yiśrāʾēl רָא֗וּ saw rāʾâ כִּֽי that kî לָכַ֤ד had taken lākad הָֽאֹרֵב֙ the ambush ʾārab אֶת ʾēt הָעִ֔יר the city, ʿîr וְכִ֥י and that kî עָלָ֖ה ascended, ʿālâ עֲשַׁ֣ן the smoke ʿāšān הָעִ֑יר of the city ʿîr וַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּ then they turned again, šûb וַיַּכּ֖וּ and slew nākâ אֶת ʾēt אַנְשֵׁ֥י the men ʾĕnôš הָעָֽי׃ of Ai. ʿay

וְאֵ֨לֶּה And the other ʾēlle יָֽצְא֤וּ issued out yāṣāʾ מִן of min הָעִיר֙ the city ʿîr לִקְרָאתָ֔ם against qirʾâ וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ them; so they were hāyâ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl בַּתָּ֔וֶךְ in the midst tāwek אֵ֥לֶּה some ʾēlle מִזֶּ֖ה on this side, ze וְאֵ֣לֶּה and some ʾēlle מִזֶּ֑ה on that side: ze וַיַּכּ֣וּ and they smote nākâ אוֹתָ֔ם ʾēt עַד them, so that ʿad בִּלְתִּ֥י none biltî הִשְׁאִֽיר they let šāʾar ל֖וֹ שָׂרִ֥יד of them remain śārîd וּפָלִֽיט׃ or escape. pālîṭ

וְאֶת ʾēt מֶ֥לֶךְ And the king melek הָעַ֖י of Ai ʿay תָּ֣פְשׂוּ they took tāpaś חָ֑י alive, ḥay וַיַּקְרִ֥בוּ and brought qārab אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt אֶל him to ʾēl יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ Joshua. yĕhôšûaʿ

וַיְהִ֣י And it came to pass, hāyâ כְּכַלּ֣וֹת had made an end kālâ יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל when Israel yiśrāʾēl לַֽהֲרֹג֩ of slaying hārag אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֨י the inhabitants yāšab הָעַ֜י of Ai ʿay בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה in the field, śāde בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ in the wilderness midbār אֲשֶׁ֣ר wherein ʾăšer רְדָפ֣וּם they chased rādap בּ֔וֹ וַֽיִּפְּל֥וּ fallen nāpal כֻלָּ֛ם them, and when they were all kōl לְפִי on the edge pe חֶ֖רֶב of the sword, ḥereb עַד until ʿad תֻּמָּ֑ם they were consumed, tāmam וַיָּשֻׁ֤בוּ returned šûb כָל that all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ the Israelites yiśrāʾēl הָעַ֔י unto Ai, ʿay וַיַּכּ֥וּ and smote nākâ אֹתָ֖הּ ʾēt לְפִי it with the edge pe חָֽרֶב׃ of the sword. ḥereb

וַיְהִי֩ And it was, hāyâ כָל all kōl הַנֹּ֨פְלִ֜ים that fell nāpal בַּיּ֤וֹם day, yôm הַהוּא֙ that hûʾ מֵאִ֣ישׁ both of men ʾîš וְעַד ʿad אִשָּׁ֔ה and women, ʾiššâ שְׁנֵ֥ים twelve šĕnayim עָשָׂ֖ר ʿāśār אָ֑לֶף thousand, ʾelep כֹּ֖ל all kōl אַנְשֵׁ֥י the men ʾîš הָעָֽי׃ of Ai. ʿay

וִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ For Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ לֹֽא not lōʾ הֵשִׁ֣יב drew šûb יָד֔וֹ his hand yād אֲשֶׁ֥ר back, wherewith ʾăšer נָטָ֖ה he stretched out nāṭâ בַּכִּיד֑וֹן the spear, kîdôn עַ֚ד until ʿad אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer הֶֽחֱרִ֔ים he had utterly destroyed ḥāram אֵ֖ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֥י the inhabitants yāšab הָעָֽי׃ of Ai. ʿay

רַ֣ק Only raq הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה the cattle bĕhēmâ וּשְׁלַל֙ and the spoil šālāl הָעִ֣יר city ʿîr הַהִ֔יא of that hûʾ בָּֽזְז֥וּ took for a prey bāzaz לָהֶ֖ם hēm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiśrāʾēl כִּדְבַ֣ר unto themselves, according unto the word dābār יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer צִוָּ֖ה he commanded ṣāwâ אֶת ʾēt יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ Joshua. yĕhôšûaʿ

וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף burnt śārap יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֑י Ai, ʿay וַיְשִׂימֶ֤הָ and made śûm תֵּל it an heap tēl עוֹלָם֙ for ever, ʿôlām שְׁמָמָ֔ה a desolation šĕmāmâ עַ֖ד unto ʿad הַיּ֥וֹם day. yôm הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וְאֶת down ʾēt מֶ֧לֶךְ And the king melek הָעַ֛י of Ai ʿay תָּלָ֥ה he hanged tālâ עַל on ʿal הָעֵ֖ץ a tree ʿēṣ עַד until ʿad עֵ֣ת eventide: ʿēt הָעָ֑רֶב ʿereb וּכְב֣וֹא was down, bôʾ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ֩ and as soon as the sun šemeš צִוָּ֨ה commanded ṣāwâ יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וַיֹּרִ֧ידוּ that they should take yārad אֶת ʾēt נִבְלָת֣וֹ his carcase nĕbēlâ מִן from min הָעֵ֗ץ the tree, ʿēṣ וַיַּשְׁלִ֤יכוּ and cast šālak אוֹתָהּ֙ ʾēt אֶל it at ʾēl פֶּ֙תַח֙ the entering petaḥ שַׁ֣עַר of the gate šaʿar הָעִ֔יר of the city, ʿîr וַיָּקִ֤ימוּ and raise qûm עָלָיו֙ thereon ʿal גַּל heap gal אֲבָנִ֣ים of stones, ʾeben גָּד֔וֹל a great gādôl עַ֖ד unto ʿad הַיּ֥וֹם day. yôm הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

אָ֣ז Then ʾāz יִבְנֶ֤ה built bānâ יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֖ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl בְּהַ֖ר in mount har עֵיבָֽל׃ Ebal, ʿêbāl

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר As ʾăšer צִוָּה֩ commanded ṣāwâ מֹשֶׁ֨ה Moses mōše עֶֽבֶד the servant ʿebed יְהוָ֜ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt בְּנֵ֣י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl כַּכָּתוּב֙ as it is written kātab בְּסֵ֙פֶר֙ in the book sēper תּוֹרַ֣ת of the law tôrâ מֹשֶׁ֔ה of Moses, mōše מִזְבַּח֙ an altar mizbēaḥ אֲבָנִ֣ים stones, ʾeben שְׁלֵמ֔וֹת of whole šālēm אֲשֶׁ֛ר which ʾăšer לֹֽא no lōʾ הֵנִ֥יף man hath lift up nûp עֲלֵיהֶ֖ן over ʿal בַּרְזֶ֑ל iron: barzel וַיַּֽעֲל֨וּ and they offered ʿālâ עָלָ֤יו thereon ʿal עֹלוֹת֙ burnt offerings ʿōlâ לַֽיהוָ֔ה unto the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַֽיִּזְבְּח֖וּ and sacrificed zābaḥ שְׁלָמִֽים׃ peace offerings. šelem

וַיִּכְתָּב And he wrote kātab שָׁ֖ם there šām עַל upon ʿal הָֽאֲבָנִ֑ים the stones ʾeben אֵ֗ת ʾēt מִשְׁנֵה֙ a copy mišne תּוֹרַ֣ת of the law tôrâ מֹשֶׁ֔ה of Moses, mōše אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer כָּתַ֔ב he wrote kātab לִפְנֵ֖י in the presence pānîm בְּנֵ֥י of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וְכָל And all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וּזְקֵנָ֡יו and their elders, zāqēn וְשֹֽׁטְרִ֣ים׀ and officers, šōṭēr וְשֹֽׁפְטָ֡יו and their judges, šāpaṭ עֹֽמְדִ֣ים stood ʿāmad מִזֶּ֣ה׀ on this side ze וּמִזֶּ֣ה׀ and on that side ze לָֽאָר֡וֹן the ark ʾārôn נֶגֶד֩ before neged הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֨ים the priests kōhēn הַלְוִיִּ֜ם the Levites, lēwiyyî נֹֽשְׂאֵ֣י׀ which bare nāśāʾ אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn בְּרִית of the covenant bĕrît יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ כַּגֵּר֙ as well the stranger, gēr כָּֽאֶזְרָ֔ח as he that was born ʾezrāḥ חֶצְיוֹ֙ among them; half ḥēṣî אֶל of them over ʾēl מ֣וּל against mûl הַר mount har גְּרִזִ֔ים Gerizim, gĕrizîm וְהַֽחֶצְי֖וֹ and half ḥēṣî אֶל of them over ʾēl מ֣וּל against mûl הַר mount har עֵיבָ֑ל Ebal; ʿêbāl כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר as ʾăšer צִוָּ֜ה had commanded ṣāwâ מֹשֶׁ֣ה Moses mōše עֶֽבֶד the servant ʿebed יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ לְבָרֵ֛ךְ that they should bless bārak אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֥ם the people ʿam יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָֽה׃ before, riʾšôn

וְאַֽחֲרֵי And afterward ʾaḥar כֵ֗ן kēn קָרָא֙ he read qārāʾ אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl דִּבְרֵ֣י the words dābār הַתּוֹרָ֔ה of the law, tôrâ הַבְּרָכָ֖ה the blessings bĕrākâ וְהַקְּלָלָ֑ה and cursings, qĕlālâ כְּכָל according to all kōl הַכָּת֖וּב that is written kātab בְּסֵ֥פֶר in the book sēper הַתּוֹרָֽה׃ of the law. tôrâ

לֹֽא not lōʾ הָיָ֣ה There was hāyâ דָבָ֔ר a word dābār מִכֹּ֖ל of all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer צִוָּ֣ה commanded, ṣāwâ מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses mōše אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer לֹֽא not lōʾ קָרָ֜א read qārāʾ יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ נֶ֣גֶד before neged כָּל all kōl קְהַ֤ל the congregation qāhāl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְהַנָּשִׁ֣ים with the women, ʾiššâ וְהַטַּ֔ף and the little ones, ṭap וְהַגֵּ֖ר and the strangers gēr הַֽהֹלֵ֥ךְ that were conversant hālak בְּקִרְבָּֽם׃ among them. qereb
