אִ֛ישׁ a man ʾîš הָיָ֥ה There was hāyâ בְאֶֽרֶץ in the land ʾereṣ ע֖וּץ of Uz, ʿûṣ אִיּ֣וֹב Job; ʾiyyôb שְׁמ֑וֹ whose name šēm וְהָיָ֣ה׀ was hāyâ הָאִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš הַה֗וּא and that hûʾ תָּ֧ם perfect tām וְיָשָׁ֛ר and upright, yāšār וִירֵ֥א and one that feared yārēʾ אֱלֹהִ֖ים God, ʾĕlōhîm וְסָ֥ר and eschewed sûr מֵרָֽע׃ evil. raʿ

וַיִּוָּ֥לְדוּ And there were born yālad ל֛וֹ שִׁבְעָ֥ה unto him seven šebaʿ בָנִ֖ים sons bēn וְשָׁל֥וֹשׁ and three šālôš בָּנֽוֹת׃ daughters. bat

וַיְהִ֣י also was hāyâ מִ֠קְנֵהוּ His substance miqne שִֽׁבְעַ֨ת seven šebaʿ אַלְפֵי thousand ʾelep צֹ֜אן sheep, ṣōn וּשְׁלֹ֧שֶׁת and three šālôš אַלְפֵ֣י thousand ʾelep גְמַלִּ֗ים camels, gāmāl וַֽחֲמֵ֨שׁ and five ḥāmēš מֵא֤וֹת hundred mēʾâ צֶֽמֶד yoke ṣemed בָּקָר֙ of oxen, bāqār וַֽחֲמֵ֣שׁ and five ḥāmēš מֵא֣וֹת hundred mēʾâ אֲתוֹנ֔וֹת she asses, ʾātôn וַֽעֲבֻדָּ֖ה household; ʿăbuddâ רַבָּ֣ה great rab מְאֹ֑ד and a very mĕʾōd וַֽיְהִי֙ was hāyâ הָאִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš הַה֔וּא so that this hûʾ גָּד֖וֹל the greatest gādôl מִכָּל of all kōl בְּנֵי the men bēn קֶֽדֶם׃ of the east. qedem

וְהָֽלְכ֤וּ went hālak בָנָיו֙ And his sons bēn וְעָשׂ֣וּ ʿāśâ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה and feasted mište בֵּ֖ית houses, bayit אִ֣ישׁ every one ʾîš יוֹמ֑וֹ his day; yôm וְשָֽׁלְח֗וּ and sent šālaḥ וְקָֽרְאוּ֙ and called qārāʾ לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת for their three šālôš אַחְיֹֽתֵיהֶ֔ם sisters ʾāḥôt לֶֽאֱכֹ֥ל to eat ʾākal וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת and to drink šātâ עִמָּהֶֽם׃ with them. ʿim

וַיְהִ֡י And it was hāyâ כִּ֣י so, when kî הִקִּיפוּ֩ were gone about, nāqap יְמֵ֨י the days yôm הַמִּשְׁתֶּ֜ה of feasting mište וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח sent šālaḥ אִיּ֣וֹב that Job ʾiyyôb וַֽיְקַדְּשֵׁ֗ם and sanctified qādaš וְהִשְׁכִּ֣ים them, and rose up early šākam בַּבֹּקֶר֮ in the morning, bōqer וְהֶֽעֱלָ֣ה and offered ʿālâ עֹלוֹת֮ burnt offerings ʿōlâ מִסְפַּ֣ר to the number mispār כֻּלָּם֒ of them all: kōl כִּ֚י for kî אָמַ֣ר said, ʾāmar אִיּ֔וֹב Job ʾiyyôb אוּלַי֙ It may be ʾûlay חָֽטְא֣וּ have sinned, ḥāṭāʾ בָנַ֔י that my sons bēn וּבֵרֲכ֥וּ and cursed bārak אֱלֹהִ֖ים God ʾĕlōhîm בִּלְבָבָ֑ם in their hearts. lēbāb כָּ֛כָה Thus kākâ יַֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה did ʿāśâ אִיּ֖וֹב Job ʾiyyôb כָּל kōl הַיָּמִֽים׃ continually. yôm

וַיְהִ֣י Now there was hāyâ הַיּ֔וֹם a day yôm וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ came bôʾ בְּנֵ֣י when the sons bēn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב to present themselves yāṣab עַל before ʿal יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּב֥וֹא came bôʾ גַֽם also gam הַשָּׂטָ֖ן and Satan śāṭān בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ among them. tāwek

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֛ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂטָ֖ן Satan, śāṭān מֵאַ֣יִן Whence ʾayin תָּבֹ֑א comest bôʾ וַיַּ֨עַן answered ʿānâ הַשָּׂטָ֤ן thou? Then Satan śāṭān אֶת ʾēt יְהוָה֙ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר and said, ʾāmar מִשּׁ֣וּט From going to and fro šûṭ בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the earth, ʾereṣ וּמֵֽהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ and from walking up and down in it. hālak בָּֽהּ׃

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂטָ֔ן Satan, śāṭān הֲשַׂ֥מְתָּ Hast thou considered śûm לִבְּךָ֖ lēb עַל ʿal עַבְדִּ֣י my servant ʿebed אִיּ֑וֹב Job, ʾiyyôb כִּ֣י that kî אֵ֤ין none ʾayin כָּמֹ֙הוּ֙ like him kĕmô בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the earth, ʾereṣ אִ֣ישׁ man, ʾîš תָּ֧ם a perfect tām וְיָשָׁ֛ר and an upright yāšār יְרֵ֥א one that feareth yārēʾ אֱלֹהִ֖ים God, ʾĕlōhîm וְסָ֥ר and escheweth sûr מֵרָֽע׃ evil? raʿ

וַיַּ֧עַן answered ʿānâ הַשָּׂטָ֛ן Then Satan śāṭān אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר and said, ʾāmar הַֽחִנָּ֔ם for nought? ḥinnām יָרֵ֥א fear yārēʾ אִיּ֖וֹב Doth Job ʾiyyôb אֱלֹהִֽים׃ God ʾĕlōhîm

הֲלֹֽא Hast not lōʾ אַ֠תָּ thou ʾattâ שַׂ֣כְתָּ made an hedge śûk בַֽעֲד֧וֹ about bĕʿad וּבְעַד him, and about bĕʿad בֵּית֛וֹ his house, bayit וּבְעַ֥ד and about bĕʿad כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer ל֖וֹ מִסָּבִ֑יב he hath on every side? sābîb מַֽעֲשֵׂ֤ה the work maʿăśe יָדָיו֙ of his hands, yād בֵּרַ֔כְתָּ thou hast blessed bārak וּמִקְנֵ֖הוּ and his substance miqne פָּרַ֥ץ is increased pāraṣ בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ in the land. ʾereṣ

וְאוּלָם֙ But ʾûlām שְֽׁלַֽח put forth šālaḥ נָ֣א now, nāʾ יָֽדְךָ֔ thine hand yād וְגַ֖ע and touch nāgaʿ בְּכָל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer ל֑וֹ אִם he hath, and ʾim לֹ֥א lōʾ עַל thee to ʿal פָּנֶ֖יךָ thy face. pānîm יְבָרֲכֶֽךָּ׃ he will curse bārak

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֜ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂטָ֗ן Satan, śāṭān הִנֵּ֤ה Behold, hinnē כָל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer לוֹ֙ בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ he hath in thy power; yād רַ֣ק only raq אֵלָ֔יו upon ʾēl אַל ʾal תִּשְׁלַ֖ח himself put not forth šālaḥ יָדֶ֑ךָ thine hand. yād וַיֵּצֵא֙ went forth yāṣāʾ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן So Satan śāṭān מֵעִ֖ם from ʿim פְּנֵ֥י the presence pānîm יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיְהִ֖י And there was hāyâ הַיּ֑וֹם a day yôm וּבָנָ֨יו when his sons bēn וּבְנֹתָ֤יו and his daughters bat אֹֽכְלִים֙ eating ʾākal וְשֹׁתִ֣ים and drinking šātâ יַ֔יִן wine yayin בְּבֵ֖ית house: bayit אֲחִיהֶ֥ם brother's ʾāḥ הַבְּכֽוֹר׃ in their eldest bĕkôr

וּמַלְאָ֛ךְ a messenger mălʾok בָּ֥א And there came bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl אִיּ֖וֹב Job, ʾiyyôb וַיֹּאמַ֑ר and said, ʾāmar הַבָּקָר֙ The oxen bāqār הָי֣וּ were hāyâ חֹֽרְשׁ֔וֹת plowing, ḥāraš וְהָֽאֲתֹנ֖וֹת and the asses ʾātôn רֹע֥וֹת feeding rāʿâ עַל them: ʿal יְדֵיהֶֽם׃ beside yād

וַתִּפֹּ֤ל fell nāpal שְׁבָא֙ And the Sabeans šĕbāʾ וַתִּקָּחֵ֔ם and took them away; lāqaḥ וְאֶת ʾēt הַנְּעָרִ֖ים the servants naʿar הִכּ֣וּ yea, they have slain nākâ לְפִי with the edge pe חָ֑רֶב of the sword; ḥereb וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה am escaped mālaṭ רַק only raq אֲנִ֛י and I ʾănî לְבַדִּ֖י alone bad לְהַגִּ֥יד to tell thee. nāgad לָֽךְ׃

ע֣וֹד׀ yet ʿôd זֶ֣ה While he ze מְדַבֵּ֗ר speaking, dābar וְזֶה֮ also another, ze בָּ֣א there came bôʾ וַיֹּאמַר֒ and said, ʾāmar אֵ֣שׁ The fire ʾēš אֱלֹהִ֗ים of God ʾĕlōhîm נָֽפְלָה֙ is fallen nāpal מִן from min הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם heaven, šāmayim וַתִּבְעַ֥ר and hath burned up bāʿar בַּצֹּ֛אן the sheep, ṣōn וּבַנְּעָרִ֖ים and the servants, naʿar וַתֹּֽאכְלֵ֑ם and consumed ʾākal וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה am escaped mālaṭ רַק only raq אֲנִ֛י them; and I ʾănî לְבַדִּ֖י alone bad לְהַגִּ֥יד to tell thee. nāgad לָֽךְ׃

ע֣וֹד׀ yet ʿôd זֶ֣ה While he ze מְדַבֵּ֗ר speaking, dābar וְזֶה֮ also another, ze בָּ֣א there came bôʾ וַיֹּאמַר֒ and said, ʾāmar כַּשְׂדִּ֞ים The Chaldeans kaśdî שָׂ֣מוּ׀ made out śûm שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה three šālôš רָאשִׁ֗ים bands, rōš וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֤וּ and fell pāšaṭ עַל upon ʿal הַגְּמַלִּים֙ the camels, gāmāl וַיִּקָּח֔וּם and have carried them away, lāqaḥ וְאֶת ʾēt הַנְּעָרִ֖ים the servants naʿar הִכּ֣וּ yea, and slain nākâ לְפִי with the edge pe חָ֑רֶב of the sword; ḥereb וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה am escaped mālaṭ רַק only raq אֲנִ֛י and I ʾănî לְבַדִּ֖י alone bad לְהַגִּ֥יד to tell thee. nāgad לָֽךְ׃

וְהִנֵּה֩ And, behold, hinnē ר֨וּחַ wind rûaḥ גְּדוֹלָ֜ה a great gādôl בָּ֣אָה׀ there came bôʾ מֵעֵ֣בֶר from ʿēber הַמִּדְבָּ֗ר the wilderness, midbār וַיִּגַּע֙ and smote nāgaʿ בְּאַרְבַּע֙ the four ʾarbaʿ פִּנּ֣וֹת corners pinnâ הַבַּ֔יִת of the house, bayit וַיִּפֹּ֥ל and it fell nāpal עַל upon ʿal הַנְּעָרִ֖ים the young men, naʿar וַיָּמ֑וּתוּ and they are dead; mût וָאִמָּ֨לְטָ֧ה am escaped mālaṭ רַק only raq אֲנִ֛י and I ʾănî לְבַדִּ֖י alone bad לְהַגִּ֥יד to tell thee. nāgad לָֽךְ׃

וַיָּ֤קָם arose, qûm אִיּוֹב֙ Then Job ʾiyyôb וַיִּקְרַ֣ע and rent qāraʿ אֶת ʾēt מְעִל֔וֹ his mantle, mĕʿîl וַיָּ֖גָז and shaved gāzaz אֶת ʾēt רֹאשׁ֑וֹ his head, rōš וַיִּפֹּ֥ל and fell down nāpal אַ֖רְצָה upon the ground, ʾereṣ וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ׃ and worshipped, šāḥâ

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ And said, ʾāmar עָרֹ֨ם Naked ʿārôm יָצָ֜תִי came I out yāṣāʾ מִבֶּ֣טֶן womb, beṭen אִמִּ֗י of my mother's ʾēm וְעָרֹם֙ and naked ʿārôm אָשׁ֣וּב shall I return šûb שָׁ֔מָה thither: šām יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ נָתַ֔ן gave, nātan וַֽיהוָ֖ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ לָקָ֑ח hath taken away; lāqaḥ יְהִ֛י be hāyâ שֵׁ֥ם the name šēm יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord. yĕhōwâ מְבֹרָֽךְ׃ blessed bārak

בְּכָל In all kōl זֹ֖את this zōt לֹֽא not, lōʾ חָטָ֣א sinned ḥāṭāʾ אִיּ֑וֹב Job ʾiyyôb וְלֹֽא nor lōʾ נָתַ֥ן charged nātan תִּפְלָ֖ה foolishly. tiplâ לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃ God ʾĕlōhîm
