כֹּ֚ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ הִנְנִי֙ Behold, hēn מֵעִ֣יר I will raise up ʿûr עַל against ʿal בָּבֶ֔ל Babylon, bābel וְאֶל and against ʾēl יֹשְׁבֵ֖י them that dwell yāšab לֵ֣ב in the midst lēb קָמָ֑י of them that rise up qûm ר֖וּחַ wind; rûaḥ מַשְׁחִֽית׃ against me, a destroying šāḥat

וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֨י And will send šālaḥ לְבָבֶ֤ל׀ unto Babylon bābel זָרִים֙ fanners, zûr וְזֵר֔וּהָ that shall fan zārâ וִיבֹקְק֖וּ her, and shall empty bāqaq אֶת ʾēt אַרְצָ֑הּ her land: ʾereṣ כִּֽי for kî הָי֥וּ they shall be hāyâ עָלֶ֛יהָ against ʿal מִסָּבִ֖יב her round about. sābîb בְּי֥וֹם in the day yôm רָעָֽה׃ of trouble raʿ

אֶֽל Against ʾēl יִדְרֹ֤ךְ bendeth dārak יִדְרֹךְ let the archer dārak הַדֹּרֵךְ֙ bend dārak קַשְׁתּ֔וֹ his bow, qešet וְאֶל ye not ʾal יִתְעַ֖ל lifteth himself up ʿālâ בְּסִרְיֹנ֑וֹ in his brigandine: siryōn וְאַֽל and against ʾēl תַּחְמְלוּ֙ and spare ḥāmal אֶל ʾēl בַּ֣חֻרֶ֔יהָ her young men; bāḥûr הַחֲרִ֖ימוּ destroy ye utterly ḥāram כָּל all kōl צְבָאָֽהּ׃ her host. ṣābāʾ

וְנָפְל֥וּ shall fall nāpal חֲלָלִ֖ים Thus the slain ḥālāl בְּאֶ֣רֶץ in the land ʾereṣ כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים of the Chaldeans, kaśdî וּמְדֻקָּרִ֖ים and thrust through dāqar בְּחוּצוֹתֶֽיהָ׃ in her streets. ḥûṣ

כִּ֠י For kî לֹֽא not lōʾ אַלְמָ֨ן forsaken, ʾalmān יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וִֽיהוּדָה֙ nor Judah yĕhûdâ מֵֽאֱלֹהָ֔יו of his God, ʾĕlōhîm מֵֽיְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֑וֹת of hosts; ṣābāʾ כִּ֤י though kî אַרְצָם֙ their land ʾereṣ מָלְאָ֣ה was filled mālēʾ אָשָׁ֔ם with sin ʾāšām מִקְּד֖וֹשׁ against the Holy One qādôš יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

נֻ֣סוּ׀ Flee out nûs מִתּ֣וֹךְ of the midst tāwek בָּבֶ֗ל of Babylon, bābel וּמַלְּטוּ֙ and deliver mālaṭ אִ֣ישׁ every man ʾîš נַפְשׁ֔וֹ his soul: nepeš אַל be not ʾal תִּדַּ֖מּוּ cut off dāmam בַּעֲוֺנָ֑הּ in her iniquity; ʿāwōn כִּי֩ for kî עֵ֨ת the time ʿēt נְקָמָ֥ה vengeance; nĕqāmâ הִיא֙ this hûʾ לַֽיהוָ֔ה of the Lord's yĕhōwâ גְּמ֕וּל unto her a recompence. gĕmûl ה֥וּא hûʾ מְשַׁלֵּ֖ם he will render šālam לָֽהּ׃

כּוֹס cup kôs זָהָ֤ב a golden zāhāb בָּבֶל֙ Babylon bābel בְּיַד hand, yād יְהוָ֔ה in the Lord's yĕhōwâ מְשַׁכֶּ֖רֶת drunken: šākar כָּל that made all kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ the earth ʾereṣ מִיֵּינָהּ֙ of her wine; yayin שָׁת֣וּ have drunken šātâ גוֹיִ֔ם the nations gôy עַל therefore ʿal כֵּ֖ן kēn יִתְהֹלְל֥וּ are mad. hālal גוֹיִֽם׃ the nations gôy

פִּתְאֹ֛ם is suddenly pitʾôm נָפְלָ֥ה fallen nāpal בָבֶ֖ל Babylon bābel וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֑ר and destroyed: šābar הֵילִ֣ילוּ howl yālal עָלֶ֗יהָ for ʿal קְח֤וּ her; take lāqaḥ צֳרִי֙ balm ṣĕrî לְמַכְאוֹבָ֔הּ for her pain, makʾōb אוּלַ֖י if so be ʾûlay תֵּרָפֵֽא׃ she may be healed. rāpāʾ

רִפִּ֤אנוּ We would have healed rāpāʾ אֶת ʾēt בָּבֶל֙ Babylon, bābel וְלֹ֣א but she is not lōʾ נִרְפָּ֔תָה healed: rāpāʾ עִזְב֕וּהָ forsake ʿāzab וְנֵלֵ֖ךְ her, and let us go hālak אִ֣ישׁ every one ʾîš לְאַרְצ֑וֹ into his own country: ʾereṣ כִּֽי for kî נָגַ֤ע reacheth nāgaʿ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ heaven, šāmayim מִשְׁפָּטָ֔הּ her judgment mišpāṭ וְנִשָּׂ֖א and is lifted up nāśāʾ עַד to ʿad שְׁחָקִֽים׃ the skies. šaḥaq

הוֹצִ֥יא hath brought forth yāṣāʾ יְהוָ֖ה The Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt צִדְקֹתֵ֑ינוּ our righteousness: ṣĕdāqâ בֹּ֚אוּ come, bôʾ וּנְסַפְּרָ֣ה and let us declare sāpar בְצִיּ֔וֹן in Zion ṣiyyôn אֶֽת ʾēt מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה the work maʿăśe יְהוָ֥ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ our God. ʾĕlōhîm

הָבֵ֣רוּ Make bright bārar הַחִצִּים֮ the arrows; ḥēṣ מִלְא֣וּ gather mālēʾ הַשְּׁלָטִים֒ the shields: šeleṭ הֵעִ֣יר hath raised up ʿûr יְהוָ֗ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt ר֙וּחַ֙ the spirit rûaḥ מַלְכֵ֣י of the kings melek מָדַ֔י of the Medes: māday כִּֽי for kî עַל against ʿal בָּבֶ֥ל Babylon, bābel מְזִמָּת֖וֹ his device mĕzimmâ לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֑הּ to destroy šāḥat כִּֽי it; because kî נִקְמַ֤ת the vengeance nĕqāmâ יְהוָה֙ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ הִ֔יא it hûʾ נִקְמַ֖ת the vengeance nĕqāmâ הֵיכָלֽוֹ׃ of his temple. hêkāl

אֶל upon ʾēl חוֹמֹ֨ת the walls ḥômâ בָּבֶ֜ל of Babylon, bābel שְׂאוּ Set up nāśāʾ נֵ֗ס the standard nēs הַחֲזִ֙יקוּ֙ strong, ḥāzaq הַמִּשְׁמָ֔ר make the watch mišmār הָקִ֙ימוּ֙ set up qûm שֹֽׁמְרִ֔ים the watchmen, šāmar הָכִ֖ינוּ prepare kûn הָאֹֽרְבִ֑ים the ambushes: ʾārab כִּ֚י for kî גַּם hath both gam זָמַ֣ם devised zāmam יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ גַּם and gam עָשָׂ֕ה done ʿāśâ אֵ֥ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר that which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֖ר he spake dābar אֶל against ʾēl יֹשְׁבֵ֥י the inhabitants yāšab בָבֶֽל׃ of Babylon. bābel

שֹׁכַנְתְּ֙י O thou that dwellest šākan עַל upon ʿal מַ֣יִם waters, mayim רַבִּ֔ים many rab רַבַּ֖ת abundant rab אֽוֹצָרֹ֑ת in treasures, ʾôṣār בָּ֥א is come, bôʾ קִצֵּ֖ךְ thine end qēṣ אַמַּ֥ת the measure ʾammâ בִּצְעֵֽךְ׃ of thy covetousness. beṣaʿ

נִשְׁבַּ֛ע hath sworn šābaʿ יְהוָ֥ה The Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ בְּנַפְשׁ֑וֹ by himself, nepeš כִּ֣י Surely kî אִם ʾim מִלֵּאתִ֤יךְ I will fill mālēʾ אָדָם֙ thee with men, ʾādām כַּיֶּ֔לֶק as with caterpillers; yeleq וְעָנ֥וּ and they shall lift up ʿānâ עָלַ֖יִךְ against thee. ʿal הֵידָֽד׃ a shout hêdād

עֹשֵׂ֥ה He hath made ʿāśâ אֶ֙רֶץ֙ the earth ʾereṣ בְּכֹח֔וֹ by his power, kōaḥ מֵכִ֥ין he hath established kûn תֵּבֵ֖ל the world tēbēl בְּחָכְמָת֑וֹ by his wisdom, ḥokmâ וּבִתְבוּנָת֖וֹ by his understanding. tābûn נָטָ֥ה and hath stretched out nāṭâ שָׁמָֽיִם׃ the heaven šāmayim

לְק֨וֹל voice, qôl תִּתּ֜וֹ When he uttereth nātan הֲמ֥וֹן a multitude hāmôn מַ֙יִם֙ of waters mayim בַּשָּׁמַ֔יִם in the heavens; šāmayim וַיַּ֥עַל to ascend ʿālâ נְשִׂאִ֖ים and he causeth the vapours nāśîʾ מִקְצֵה from the ends qāṣe אָ֑רֶץ of the earth: ʾereṣ בְּרָקִ֤ים lightnings bārāq לַמָּטָר֙ with rain, māṭar עָשָׂ֔ה he maketh ʿāśâ וַיּ֥וֹצֵא and bringeth forth yāṣāʾ ר֖וּחַ the wind rûaḥ מֵאֹצְרֹתָֽיו׃ out of his treasures. ʾôṣār

נִבְעַ֤ר is brutish bāʿar כָּל Every kōl אָדָם֙ man ʾādām מִדַּ֔עַת by knowledge; daʿat הֹבִ֥ישׁ is confounded yābēš כָּל every kōl צֹרֵ֖ף founder ṣārap מִפָּ֑סֶל by the graven image: pesel כִּ֛י for kî שֶׁ֥קֶר falsehood, šeqer נִסְכּ֖וֹ his molten image nesek וְלֹא and no lōʾ ר֥וּחַ breath in them. rûaḥ בָּֽם׃

הֶ֣בֶל vanity, hebel הֵ֔מָּה They hēm מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה the work maʿăśe תַּעְתֻּעִ֑ים of errors: taʿtuaʿ בְּעֵ֥ת in the time ʿēt פְּקֻדָּתָ֖ם of their visitation pĕquddâ יֹאבֵֽדוּ׃ they shall perish. ʾābad

לֹֽא not lōʾ כְאֵ֜לֶּה like them; ʾēlle חֵ֣לֶק The portion ḥēleq יַעֲק֗וֹב of Jacob yaʿăqōb כִּֽי for kî יוֹצֵ֤ר the former yāṣar הַכֹּל֙ of all things: kōl ה֔וּא he hûʾ וְשֵׁ֖בֶט and the rod šēbeṭ נַחֲלָת֑וֹ of his inheritance: naḥălâ יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ שְׁמֽוֹ׃ his name. šēm

מַפֵּץ my battle axe mappēṣ אַתָּ֣ה Thou ʾattâ לִ֔י כְּלֵ֖י weapons kĕlî מִלְחָמָ֑ה of war: milḥāmâ וְנִפַּצְתִּ֤י for with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֙ גּוֹיִ֔ם the nations, gôy וְהִשְׁחַתִּ֥י and with thee will I destroy šāḥat בְךָ֖ מַמְלָכֽוֹת׃ kingdoms; mamlākâ

וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י And with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֔ ס֖וּס the horse sûs וְרֹֽכְב֑וֹ and his rider; rākab וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י and with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֔ רֶ֖כֶב the chariot rekeb וְרֹכְבֽוֹ׃ and his rider; rākab

וְנִפַּצְתִּ֤י With thee also will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֙ אִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš וְאִשָּׁ֔ה and woman; ʾiššâ וְנִפַּצְתִּ֥י and with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֖ זָקֵ֣ן old zāqēn וָנָ֑עַר and young; naʿar וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י and with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֔ בָּח֖וּר the young man bāḥûr וּבְתוּלָֽה׃ and the maid; bĕtûlâ

וְנִפַּצְתִּ֤י I will also break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֙ רֹעֶ֣ה with thee the shepherd rāʿâ וְעֶדְר֔וֹ and his flock; ʿēder וְנִפַּצְתִּ֥י and with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֖ אִכָּ֣ר the husbandman ʾikkār וְצִמְדּ֑וֹ and his yoke of oxen; ṣemed וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י and with thee will I break in pieces nāpaṣ בְךָ֔ פַּח֖וֹת captains peḥâ וּסְגָנִֽים׃ and rulers. sāgān

וְשִׁלַּמְתִּ֨י And I will render šālam לְבָבֶ֜ל unto Babylon bābel וּלְכֹ֣ל׀ and to all kōl יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י the inhabitants yāšab כַשְׂדִּ֗ים of Chaldea kaśdî אֵ֧ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl רָעָתָ֛ם their evil raʿ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָשׂ֥וּ they have done ʿāśâ בְצִיּ֖וֹן in Zion ṣiyyôn לְעֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם in your sight, ʿayin נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

הִנְנִ֨י Behold, hēn אֵלֶ֜יךָ I against ʾēl הַ֤ר mountain, har הַמַּשְׁחִית֙ thee, O destroying mašḥît נְאֻם saith nĕʾum יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ הַמַּשְׁחִ֖ית which destroyest šāḥat אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ the earth: ʾereṣ וְנָטִ֨יתִי and I will stretch out nāṭâ אֶת ʾēt יָדִ֜י mine hand yād עָלֶ֗יךָ upon ʿal וְגִלְגַּלְתִּ֙יךָ֙ thee, and roll thee down gālal מִן from min הַסְּלָעִ֔ים the rocks, selaʿ וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ and will make nātan לְהַ֥ר mountain. har שְׂרֵפָֽה׃ thee a burnt śĕrēpâ

וְלֹֽא And they shall not lōʾ יִקְח֤וּ take lāqaḥ מִמְּךָ֙ of min אֶ֣בֶן thee a stone ʾeben לְפִנָּ֔ה for a corner, pinnâ וְאֶ֖בֶן nor a stone ʾeben לְמֽוֹסָד֑וֹת for foundations; môsādâ כִּֽי but kî שִׁמְמ֥וֹת desolate šĕmāmâ עוֹלָ֛ם for ever, ʿôlām תִּֽהְיֶ֖ה thou shalt be hāyâ נְאֻם saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

שְׂאוּ Set ye up nāśāʾ נֵ֣ס a standard nēs בָּאָ֗רֶץ in the land, ʾereṣ תִּקְע֨וּ blow tāqaʿ שׁוֹפָ֤ר the trumpet šôpār בַּגּוֹיִם֙ among the nations, gôy קַדְּשׁ֤וּ prepare qādaš עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ against ʿal גּוֹיִ֔ם the nations gôy הַשְׁמִ֧יעוּ her, call together šāmaʿ עָלֶ֛יהָ against ʿal מַמְלְכ֥וֹת her the kingdoms mamlākâ אֲרָרַ֖ט of Ararat, ʾărāraṭ מִנִּ֣י Minni, minnî וְאַשְׁכְּנָ֑ז and Ashchenaz; ʾaškĕnaz פִּקְד֤וּ appoint pāqad עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ against ʿal טִפְסָ֔ר a captain ṭipsar הַֽעֲלוּ to come up ʿālâ ס֖וּס her; cause the horses sûs כְּיֶ֥לֶק caterpillers. yeleq סָמָֽר׃ as the rough sāmār

קַדְּשׁ֨וּ Prepare qādaš עָלֶ֤יהָ against ʿal גוֹיִם֙ her the nations gôy אֶת ʾēt מַלְכֵ֣י the kings melek מָדַ֔י of the Medes, māday אֶת with ʾēt פַּחוֹתֶ֖יהָ the captains peḥâ וְאֶת ʾēt כָּל thereof, and all kōl סְגָנֶ֑יהָ the rulers sāgān וְאֵ֖ת ʾēt כָּל thereof, and all kōl אֶ֥רֶץ the land ʾereṣ מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃ of his dominion. memšālâ

וַתִּרְעַ֥שׁ shall tremble rāʿaš הָאָ֖רֶץ And the land ʾereṣ וַתָּחֹ֑ל and sorrow: ḥûl כִּ֣י for kî קָ֤מָה shall be performed qûm עַל against ʿal בָּבֶל֙ Babylon, bābel מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת every purpose maḥăšābâ יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ לָשׂ֞וּם to make śûm אֶת ʾēt אֶ֧רֶץ the land ʾereṣ בָּבֶ֛ל of Babylon bābel לְשַׁמָּ֖ה a desolation šammâ מֵאֵ֥ין without ʾayin יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ an inhabitant. yāšab

חָדְלוּ֩ have forborn ḥādal גִבּוֹרֵ֨י The mighty men gibbôr בָבֶ֜ל of Babylon bābel לְהִלָּחֵ֗ם to fight, lāḥam יָֽשְׁבוּ֙ they have remained yāšab בַּמְּצָד֔וֹת in holds: mĕṣad נָשְׁתָ֥ה hath failed; nāšat גְבוּרָתָ֖ם their might gĕbûrâ הָי֣וּ they became hāyâ לְנָשִׁ֑ים as women: ʾiššâ הִצִּ֥יתוּ they have burned yāṣat מִשְׁכְּנֹתֶ֖יהָ her dwellingplaces; miškān נִשְׁבְּר֥וּ are broken. šābar בְרִיחֶֽיהָ׃ her bars bĕrîaḥ

רָ֤ץ One post rûṣ לִקְרַאת to meet qirʾâ רָץ֙ shall run rûṣ יָר֔וּץ another, rûṣ וּמַגִּ֖יד and one messenger nāgad לִקְרַ֣את to meet qirʾâ מַגִּ֑יד another, nāgad לְהַגִּיד֙ to shew nāgad לְמֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek בָּבֶ֔ל of Babylon bābel כִּֽי that kî נִלְכְּדָ֥ה is taken lākad עִיר֖וֹ his city ʿîr מִקָּצֶֽה׃ at end, qāṣe

וְהַמַּעְבָּר֣וֹת And that the passages maʿăbār נִתְפָּ֔שׂוּ are stopped, tāpaś וְאֶת ʾēt הָאֲגַמִּ֖ים and the reeds ʾăgam שָׂרְפ֣וּ they have burned śārap בָאֵ֑שׁ with fire, ʾēš וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י and the men ʾîš הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה of war milḥāmâ נִבְהָֽלוּ׃ are affrighted. bāhal

כִּי֩ For kî כֹ֨ה thus kō אָמַ֜ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאוֹת֙ of hosts, ṣābāʾ אֱלֹהֵ֣י the God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel; yiśrāʾēl בַּת The daughter bat בָּבֶ֕ל of Babylon bābel כְּגֹ֖רֶן like a threshingfloor, gōren עֵ֣ת time ʿēt הִדְרִיכָ֑הּ to thresh dārak ע֣וֹד her: yet ʿôd מְעַ֔ט a little while, mĕʿaṭ וּבָ֥אָה shall come. bôʾ עֵֽת and the time ʿēt הַקָּצִ֖יר of her harvest qāṣîr לָֽהּ׃

אֲכָלַ֣נִו hath devoured ʾākal הֲמָמַ֗נִו me, he hath crushed hāmam נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֮ Nebuchadrezzar nĕbûkadneʾṣṣar מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek בָּבֶל֒ of Babylon bābel הִצִּיגַ֙נִו֙ me, he hath made yāṣag כְּלִ֣י vessel, kĕlî רִ֔יק me an empty rîq בְּלָעַ֙נִו֙ he hath swallowed me up bālaʿ כַּתַּנִּ֔ין like a dragon, tannîn מִלָּ֥א he hath filled mālēʾ כְרֵשׂ֖וֹ his belly kĕrēś מֵֽעֲדָנָ֑י with my delicates, ʿēden הֱדִיחָֽנִו׃ he hath cast me out. dûaḥ

חֲמָסִ֤י The violence ḥāmās וּשְׁאֵרִי֙ done to me and to my flesh šĕʾēr עַל upon ʿal בָּבֶ֔ל Babylon, bābel תֹּאמַ֖ר say; ʾāmar יֹשֶׁ֣בֶת shall the inhabitant yāšab צִיּ֑וֹן of Zion ṣiyyôn וְדָמִי֙ and my blood dām אֶל upon ʾēl יֹשְׁבֵ֣י the inhabitants yāšab כַשְׂדִּ֔ים of Chaldea, kaśdî תֹּאמַ֖ר say. ʾāmar יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ shall Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim

לָכֵ֗ן Therefore kēn כֹּ֚ה thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ הִנְנִי Behold, hēn רָב֙ I will plead rîb אֶת ʾēt רִיבֵ֔ךְ thy cause, rîb וְנִקַּמְתִּ֖י and take vengeance nāqam אֶת ʾēt נִקְמָתֵ֑ךְ for thee; nĕqāmâ וְהַחֲרַבְתִּי֙ and I will dry up ḥārab אֶת ʾēt יַמָּ֔הּ her sea, yām וְהֹבַשְׁתִּ֖י dry. yābēš אֶת and make ʾēt מְקוֹרָֽהּ׃ her springs māqôr

וְהָיְתָה֩ shall become hāyâ בָבֶ֨ל׀ And Babylon bābel לְגַלִּ֧ים׀ heaps, gal מְעוֹן a dwellingplace māʿôn תַּנִּ֛ים for dragons, tannîn שַׁמָּ֥ה an astonishment, šammâ וּשְׁרֵקָ֖ה and an hissing, šĕrēqâ מֵאֵ֥ין without ʾayin יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ an inhabitant. yāšab

יַחְדָּ֖ו together yaḥad כַּכְּפִרִ֣ים like lions: kĕpîr יִשְׁאָ֑גוּ They shall roar šāʾag נָעֲר֖וּ they shall yell nāʿar כְּגוֹרֵ֥י whelps. gôr אֲרָיֽוֹת׃ as lions' ʾărî

בְּחֻמָּ֞ם In their heat ḥōm אָשִׁ֣ית I will make šît אֶת ʾēt מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֗ם their feasts, mište וְהִשְׁכַּרְתִּים֙ and I will make them drunken, šākar לְמַ֣עַן that maʿan יַעֲלֹ֔זוּ they may rejoice, ʿālaz וְיָשְׁנ֥וּ and sleep yāšēn שְׁנַת sleep, šēnâ עוֹלָ֖ם a perpetual ʿôlām וְלֹ֣א and not lōʾ יָקִ֑יצוּ wake, qûṣ נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

אֽוֹרִידֵ֖ם I will bring them down yārad כְּכָרִ֣ים like lambs kar לִטְב֑וֹחַ to the slaughter, ṭābaḥ כְּאֵילִ֖ים like rams ʾayil עִם with ʿim עַתּוּדִֽים׃ he goats. ʿattûd

אֵ֚יךְ How ʾêk נִלְכְּדָ֣ה taken! lākad שֵׁשַׁ֔ךְ is Sheshach šēšak וַתִּתָּפֵ֖שׂ surprised! tāpaś תְּהִלַּ֣ת and how is the praise tĕhillâ כָּל of the whole kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ earth ʾereṣ אֵ֣יךְ how ʾêk הָיְתָ֧ה become hāyâ לְשַׁמָּ֛ה an astonishment šammâ בָּבֶ֖ל is Babylon bābel בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ among the nations! gôy

עָלָ֥ה is come up ʿālâ עַל upon ʿal בָּבֶ֖ל Babylon: bābel הַיָּ֑ם The sea yām בַּהֲמ֥וֹן with the multitude hāmôn גַּלָּ֖יו of the waves thereof. gal נִכְסָֽתָה׃ she is covered kāsâ

הָי֤וּ are hāyâ עָרֶ֙יהָ֙ Her cities ʿîr לְשַׁמָּ֔ה a desolation, šammâ אֶ֖רֶץ land, ʾereṣ צִיָּ֣ה a dry ṣiyyâ וַעֲרָבָ֑ה and a wilderness, ʿărābâ אֶ֗רֶץ a land ʾereṣ לֹֽא lōʾ יֵשֵׁ֤ב dwelleth, yāšab בָּהֵן֙ wherein hēn כָּל no kōl אִ֔ישׁ man ʾîš וְלֹֽא neither lōʾ יַעֲבֹ֥ר pass ʿābar בָּהֵ֖ן thereby. hēn בֶּן doth son bēn אָדָֽם׃ of man ʾādām

וּפָקַדְתִּ֨י And I will punish pāqad עַל ʿal בֵּ֜ל Bel bēl בְּבָבֶ֗ל in Babylon, bābel וְהֹצֵאתִ֤י and I will bring forth yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt בִּלְעוֹ֙ that which he hath swallowed up: belaʿ מִפִּ֔יו out of his mouth pe וְלֹֽא shall not lōʾ יִנְהֲר֥וּ flow together nāhar אֵלָ֛יו unto ʾēl ע֖וֹד any more ʿôd גּוֹיִ֑ם and the nations gôy גַּם him: yea, gam חוֹמַ֥ת the wall ḥômâ בָּבֶ֖ל of Babylon bābel נָפָֽלָה׃ shall fall. nāpal

צְא֤וּ go out yāṣāʾ מִתּוֹכָהּ֙ ye of the midst tāwek עַמִּ֔י My people, ʿam וּמַלְּט֖וּ of her, and deliver mālaṭ אִ֣ישׁ ye every man ʾîš אֶת ʾēt נַפְשׁ֑וֹ his soul nepeš מֵחֲר֖וֹן from the fierce ḥārôn אַף anger ʾap יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וּפֶן And lest pēn יֵרַ֤ךְ faint, rākak לְבַבְכֶם֙ your heart lēbāb וְתִֽירְא֔וּ and ye fear yārēʾ בַּשְּׁמוּעָ֖ה for the rumour šĕmûʿâ הַנִּשְׁמַ֣עַת that shall be heard šāmaʿ בָּאָ֑רֶץ in the land; ʾereṣ וּבָ֧א shall both come bôʾ בַשָּׁנָ֣ה year, šāne הַשְּׁמוּעָ֗ה a rumour šĕmûʿâ וְאַחֲרָ֤יו and after ʾaḥar בַּשָּׁנָה֙ that in year šāne הַשְּׁמוּעָ֔ה a rumour, šĕmûʿâ וְחָמָ֣ס and violence ḥāmās בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the land, ʾereṣ וּמֹשֵׁ֖ל ruler māšal עַל against ʿal מֹשֵֽׁל׃ ruler. māšal

לָכֵן֙ Therefore, kēn הִנֵּ֣ה behold, hinnē יָמִ֣ים the days yôm בָּאִ֔ים come, bôʾ וּפָקַדְתִּי֙ that I will do judgment pāqad עַל upon ʿal פְּסִילֵ֣י the graven images pĕsîl בָבֶ֔ל of Babylon: bābel וְכָל and her whole kōl אַרְצָ֖הּ land ʾereṣ תֵּב֑וֹשׁ shall be confounded, bûš וְכָל and all kōl חֲלָלֶ֖יהָ her slain ḥālāl יִפְּל֥וּ shall fall nāpal בְתוֹכָֽהּ׃ in the midst of her. tāwek

וְרִנְּנ֤וּ therein, shall sing rānan עַל for ʿal בָּבֶל֙ Babylon: bābel שָׁמַ֣יִם Then the heaven šāmayim וָאָ֔רֶץ and the earth, ʾereṣ וְכֹ֖ל and all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בָּהֶ֑ם כִּ֧י for kî מִצָּפ֛וֹן unto her from the north, ṣāpôn יָבוֹא shall come bôʾ לָ֥הּ הַשּׁוֹדְדִ֖ים the spoilers šādad נְאֻם saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

גַּם As gam בָּבֶ֕ל Babylon bābel לִנְפֹּ֖ל to fall, nāpal חַֽלְלֵ֣י the slain ḥālāl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl גַּם so gam לְבָבֶ֥ל at Babylon bābel נָפְל֖וּ shall fall nāpal חַֽלְלֵ֥י the slain ḥālāl כָל of all kōl הָאָֽרֶץ׃ the earth. ʾereṣ

פְּלֵטִ֣ים Ye that have escaped pālîṭ מֵחֶ֔רֶב the sword, ḥereb הִלְכ֖וּ go away, hālak אַֽל ʾal תַּעֲמֹ֑דוּ stand not still: ʿāmad זִכְר֤וּ remember zākar מֵֽרָחוֹק֙ afar off, rāḥôq אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם and let Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim תַּעֲלֶ֥ה come ʿālâ עַל into ʿal לְבַבְכֶֽם׃ your mind. lēbāb

בֹּ֚שְׁנוּ We are confounded, bûš כִּֽי because kî שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ we have heard šāmaʿ חֶרְפָּ֔ה reproach: ḥerpâ כִּסְּתָ֥ה hath covered kāsâ כְלִמָּ֖ה shame kĕlimmâ פָּנֵ֑ינוּ our faces: pānîm כִּ֚י for kî בָּ֣אוּ are come bôʾ זָרִ֔ים strangers zûr עַֽל into ʿal מִקְדְּשֵׁ֖י the sanctuaries miqdoš בֵּ֥ית house. bayit יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord's yĕhōwâ

לָכֵ֞ן Wherefore, kēn הִנֵּֽה behold, hinnē יָמִ֤ים the days yôm בָּאִים֙ come, bôʾ נְאֻם saith nĕʾum יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וּפָקַדְתִּ֖י that I will do judgment pāqad עַל upon ʿal פְּסִילֶ֑יהָ her graven images: pĕsîl וּבְכָל and through all kōl אַרְצָ֖הּ her land ʾereṣ יֶאֱנֹ֥ק shall groan. ʾānaq חָלָֽל׃ the wounded ḥālāl

כִּֽי Though kî תַעֲלֶ֤ה should mount up ʿālâ בָבֶל֙ Babylon bābel הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם to heaven, šāmayim וְכִ֥י and though kî תְבַצֵּ֖ר she should fortify bāṣar מְר֣וֹם the height mārôm עֻזָּ֑הּ of her strength, ʿōz מֵאִתִּ֗י from me ʾēt יָבֹ֧אוּ come bôʾ שֹׁדְדִ֛ים shall spoilers šādad לָ֖הּ נְאֻם unto her, saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

ק֥וֹל A sound qôl זְעָקָ֖ה of a cry zaʿaq מִבָּבֶ֑ל from Babylon, bābel וְשֶׁ֥בֶר destruction šeber גָּד֖וֹל and great gādôl מֵאֶ֥רֶץ from the land ʾereṣ כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ of the Chaldeans: kaśdî

כִּֽי Because kî שֹׁדֵ֤ד hath spoiled šādad יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt בָּבֶ֔ל Babylon, bābel וְאִבַּ֥ד and destroyed ʾābad מִמֶּ֖נָּה out of min ק֣וֹל voice; qôl גָּד֑וֹל her the great gādôl וְהָמ֤וּ do roar hāmâ גַלֵּיהֶם֙ when her waves gal כְּמַ֣יִם waters, mayim רַבִּ֔ים like great rab נִתַּ֥ן is uttered: nātan שְׁא֖וֹן a noise šāʾôn קוֹלָֽם׃ of their voice qôl

כִּי֩ Because kî בָ֨א is come bôʾ עָלֶ֤יהָ upon ʿal עַל her, upon ʿal בָּבֶל֙ Babylon, bābel שׁוֹדֵ֔ד the spoiler šādad וְנִלְכְּדוּ֙ are taken, lākad גִּבּוֹרֶ֔יהָ and her mighty men gibbôr חִתְּתָ֖ה is broken: ḥātat קַשְּׁתוֹתָ֑ם every one of their bows qešet כִּ֣י for kî אֵ֧ל God ʾēl גְּמֻל֛וֹת of recompences gĕmûlâ יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ שַׁלֵּ֥ם shall surely šālam יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃ requite. šālam

וְ֠הִשְׁכַּרְתִּי And I will make drunk šākar שָׂרֶ֨יהָ her princes, śar וַחֲכָמֶ֜יהָ and her wise ḥākām פַּחוֹתֶ֤יהָ her captains, peḥâ וּסְגָנֶ֙יהָ֙ and her rulers, sāgān וְגִבּוֹרֶ֔יהָ and her mighty men: gibbôr וְיָשְׁנ֥וּ and they shall sleep yāšēn שְׁנַת sleep, šēnâ עוֹלָ֖ם a perpetual ʿôlām וְלֹ֣א and not lōʾ יָקִ֑יצוּ wake, qûṣ נְאֻ֨ם saith nĕʾum הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the King, melek יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts. ṣābāʾ שְׁמֽוֹ׃ whose name šēm

כֹּֽה Thus kō אָמַ֞ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֗וֹת of hosts; ṣābāʾ חֹ֠מוֹת walls ḥômâ בָּבֶ֤ל of Babylon bābel הָֽרְחָבָה֙ The broad rāḥāb עַרְעֵ֣ר shall be utterly ʿārar תִּתְעַרְעָ֔ר broken, ʿārar וּשְׁעָרֶ֥יהָ gates šaʿar הַגְּבֹהִ֖ים and her high gābōah בָּאֵ֣שׁ with fire; ʾēš יִצַּ֑תּוּ shall be burned yāṣat וְיִֽגְע֨וּ shall labour yāgaʿ עַמִּ֧ים and the people ʿam בְּדֵי in day רִ֛יק in vain, rîq וּלְאֻמִּ֥ים and the folk lĕʾōm בְּדֵי day אֵ֖שׁ the fire, ʾēš וְיָעֵֽפוּ׃ and they shall be weary. yāʿap

הַדָּבָ֞ר The word dābār אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer צִוָּ֣ה׀ commanded ṣāwâ יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ Jeremiah yirmĕyâ הַנָּבִ֗יא the prophet nābîʾ אֶת ʾēt שְׂרָיָ֣ה Seraiah śĕrāyâ בֶן the son bēn נֵרִיָּה֮ of Neriah, nēriyyâ בֶּן the son bēn מַחְסֵיָה֒ of Maaseiah, maḥsēyâ בְּלֶכְתּ֞וֹ when he went hālak אֶת with ʾēt צִדְקִיָּ֤הוּ Zedekiah ṣidqiyyâ מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek יְהוּדָה֙ of Judah yĕhûdâ בָּבֶ֔ל into Babylon bābel בִּשְׁנַ֥ת year šāne הָרְבִעִ֖ית in the fourth rĕbîʿî לְמָלְכ֑וֹ of his reign. mālak וּשְׂרָיָ֖ה And Seraiah śĕrāyâ שַׂ֥ר prince. śar מְנוּחָֽה׃ a quiet mĕnûḥâ

וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב wrote kātab יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ So Jeremiah yirmĕyâ אֵ֧ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָרָעָ֛ה the evil raʿ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer תָּב֥וֹא should come bôʾ אֶל in ʾēl בָּבֶ֖ל Babylon, bābel אֶל upon ʾēl סֵ֣פֶר book sēper אֶחָ֑ד a ʾeḥād אֵ֚ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֣ים words dābār הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle הַכְּתֻבִ֖ים that are written kātab אֶל against ʾēl בָּבֶֽל׃ Babylon. bābel

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ And Jeremiah yirmĕyâ אֶל to ʾēl שְׂרָיָ֑ה Seraiah, śĕrāyâ כְּבֹאֲךָ֣ When thou comest bôʾ בָבֶ֔ל to Babylon, bābel וְֽרָאִ֔יתָ and shalt see, rāʾâ וְֽקָרָ֔אתָ and shalt read qārāʾ אֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֖ים words; dābār הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ these ʾēlle

וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ Then shalt thou say, ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ O Lord, yĕhōwâ אַתָּ֨ה thou ʾattâ דִבַּ֜רְתָּ hast spoken dābar אֶל against ʾēl הַמָּק֤וֹם place, māqôm הַזֶּה֙ this ze לְהַכְרִית֔וֹ to cut it off, kārat לְבִלְתִּ֤י that none biltî הֱיֽוֹת shall hāyâ בּוֹ֙ יוֹשֵׁ֔ב remain yāšab לְמֵאָדָ֖ם in it, neither man ʾādām וְעַד nor ʿad בְּהֵמָ֑ה beast, bĕhēmâ כִּֽי but kî שִׁמְמ֥וֹת desolate šĕmāmâ עוֹלָ֖ם for ever. ʿôlām תִּֽהְיֶֽה׃ that it shall be hāyâ

וְהָיָה֙ And it shall be, hāyâ כְּכַלֹּ֣תְךָ֔ when thou hast made an end kālâ לִקְרֹ֖א of reading qārāʾ אֶת ʾēt הַסֵּ֣פֶר book, sēper הַזֶּ֑ה this ze תִּקְשֹׁ֤ר thou shalt bind qāšar עָלָיו֙ to ʿal אֶ֔בֶן a stone ʾeben וְהִשְׁלַכְתּ֖וֹ it, and cast šālak אֶל it into ʾēl תּ֥וֹךְ the midst tāwek פְּרָֽת׃ of Euphrates: pĕrāt

וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ And thou shalt say, ʾāmar כָּ֠כָה Thus kākâ תִּשְׁקַ֨ע sink, šāqaʿ בָּבֶ֤ל shall Babylon bābel וְלֹֽא and shall not lōʾ תָקוּם֙ rise qûm מִפְּנֵ֣י from pānîm הָרָעָ֗ה the evil raʿ אֲשֶׁ֧ר that ʾăšer אָנֹכִ֛י I ʾānōkî מֵבִ֥יא will bring bôʾ עָלֶ֖יהָ upon ʿal וְיָעֵ֑פוּ her: and they shall be weary. yāʿap עַד Thus ʿad הֵ֖נָּה far hēnnâ דִּבְרֵ֥י the words dābār יִרְמְיָֽהוּ׃ of Jeremiah. yirmĕyâ
