בְּרֵאשִׁ֗ית In the beginning rēʾšît מַמְלְכ֛וּת of the reign mamlākût יְהוֹיָקִ֥ים of Jehoiakim yĕhôyāqîm בֶּן the son bēn יֹאשִׁיָּ֖הוּ of Josiah yōʾšiyyâ מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֑ה of Judah yĕhûdâ הָיָה֙ came hāyâ הַדָּבָ֣ר word dābār הַזֶּ֔ה this ze מֵאֵ֥ת from ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

כֹּ֣ה׀ Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֗ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ עֲמֹד֮ Stand ʿāmad בַּחֲצַ֣ר in the court ḥāṣēr בֵּית house, bayit יְהוָה֒ of the Lord's yĕhōwâ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֞ and speak dābar עַל unto ʿal כָּל all kōl עָרֵ֣י the cities ʿîr יְהוּדָ֗ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ הַבָּאִים֙ which come bôʾ לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת to worship šāḥâ בֵּית house, bayit יְהוָ֔ה in the Lord's yĕhōwâ אֵ֚ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֔ים the words dābār אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer צִוִּיתִ֖יךָ I command ṣāwâ לְדַבֵּ֣ר thee to speak dābar אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם unto ʾēl אַל not ʾal תִּגְרַ֖ע them; diminish gāraʿ דָּבָֽר׃ a word: dābār

אוּלַ֣י If so be ʾûlay יִשְׁמְע֔וּ they will hearken, šāmaʿ וְיָשֻׁ֕בוּ and turn šûb אִ֖ישׁ every man ʾîš מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ way, derek הָרָעָ֑ה from his evil raʿ וְנִחַמְתִּ֣י that I may repent nāḥam אֶל me of ʾēl הָרָעָ֗ה the evil, raʿ אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer אָנֹכִ֤י I ʾānōkî חֹשֵׁב֙ purpose ḥāšab לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת to do ʿāśâ לָהֶ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י unto them because pānîm רֹ֥עַ of the evil rōaʿ מַעַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃ of their doings. maʿălāl

וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ And thou shalt say ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם unto ʾēl כֹּ֖ה them, Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֑ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ אִם If ʾim לֹ֤א ye will not lōʾ תִשְׁמְעוּ֙ hearken šāmaʿ אֵלַ֔י to ʾēl לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ me, to walk hālak בְּת֣וֹרָתִ֔י in my law, tôrâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer נָתַ֖תִּי I have set nātan לִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃ before you, pānîm

לִשְׁמֹ֗עַ To hearken šāmaʿ עַל to ʿal דִּבְרֵ֨י the words dābār עֲבָדַ֣י of my servants ʿebed הַנְּבִאִ֔ים the prophets, nābîʾ אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom ʾăšer אָנֹכִ֖י I ʾānōkî שֹׁלֵ֣חַ sent šālaḥ אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם unto ʾēl וְהַשְׁכֵּ֥ם you, both rising up early, šākam וְשָׁלֹ֖חַ and sending šālaḥ וְלֹ֥א but ye have not lōʾ שְׁמַעְתֶּֽם׃ hearkened; šāmaʿ

וְנָתַתִּ֛י Then will I make nātan אֶת ʾēt הַבַּ֥יִת house bayit הַזֶּ֖ה this ze כְּשִׁלֹ֑ה like Shiloh, šîlō וְאֶת ʾēt הָעִ֤יר city ʿîr הַזֹּאת֙ה this zōt אֶתֵּ֣ן and will make nātan לִקְלָלָ֔ה a curse qĕlālâ לְכֹ֖ל to all kōl גּוֹיֵ֥י the nations gôy הָאָֽרֶץ׃ of the earth. ʾereṣ

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֛וּ heard šāmaʿ הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים So the priests kōhēn וְהַנְּבִאִ֖ים and the prophets nābîʾ וְכָל and all kōl הָעָ֑ם the people ʿam אֶֽת ʾēt יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ Jeremiah yirmĕyâ מְדַבֵּ֛ר speaking dābar אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֥ים words dābār הָאֵ֖לֶּה these ʾēlle בְּבֵ֥ית in the house bayit יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיְהִ֣י׀ Now it came to pass, hāyâ כְּכַלּ֣וֹת had made an end kālâ יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ when Jeremiah yirmĕyâ לְדַבֵּר֙ of speaking dābar אֵ֣ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer צִוָּ֣ה had commanded ṣāwâ יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לְדַבֵּ֖ר to speak dābar אֶל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl הָעָ֑ם the people, ʿam וַיִּתְפְּשׂ֨וּ took tāpaś אֹת֜וֹ ʾēt הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים that the priests kōhēn וְהַנְּבִיאִ֛ים and the prophets nābîʾ וְכָל and all kōl הָעָ֥ם the people ʿam לֵאמֹ֖ר him, saying, ʾāmar מ֥וֹת Thou shalt surely mût תָּמֽוּת׃ die. mût

מַדּוּעַ֩ Why maddûaʿ נִבֵּ֨יתָ hast thou prophesied nābāʾ בְשֵׁם in the name šēm יְהוָ֜ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹ֗ר saying, ʾāmar כְּשִׁלוֹ֙ like Shiloh, šîlō יִֽהְיֶה֙ shall be hāyâ הַבַּ֣יִת house bayit הַזֶּ֔ה This ze וְהָעִ֥יר city ʿîr הַזֹּ֛את and this zōt תֶּחֱרַ֖ב shall be desolate ḥārab מֵאֵ֣ין without ʾayin יוֹשֵׁ֑ב an inhabitant? yāšab וַיִּקָּהֵ֧ל were gathered qāhal כָּל And all kōl הָעָ֛ם the people ʿam אֶֽל against ʾēl יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ Jeremiah yirmĕyâ בְּבֵ֥ית in the house bayit יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ׀ heard šāmaʿ שָׂרֵ֣י When the princes śar יְהוּדָ֗ה of Judah yĕhûdâ אֵ֚ת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֣ים things, dābār הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle וַיַּעֲל֥וּ then they came up ʿālâ מִבֵּית house bayit הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ from the king's melek בֵּ֣ית unto the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֵּֽשְׁב֛וּ and sat down yāšab בְּפֶ֥תַח in the entry petaḥ שַֽׁעַר gate šaʿar יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord's yĕhōwâ הֶחָדָֽשׁ׃ of the new ḥādoš

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ Then spake ʾāmar הַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים the priests kōhēn וְהַנְּבִאִים֙ and the prophets nābîʾ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂרִ֔ים the princes śar וְאֶל and to ʾēl כָּל all kōl הָעָ֖ם the people, ʿam לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar מִשְׁפַּט worthy mišpāṭ מָ֙וֶת֙ to die; māwet לָאִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš הַזֶּ֔ה This ze כִּ֤י for kî נִבָּא֙ he hath prophesied nābāʾ אֶל against ʾēl הָעִ֣יר city, ʿîr הַזֹּ֔את this zōt כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם ye have heard šāmaʿ בְּאָזְנֵיכֶֽם׃ with your ears. ʾōzen

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר Then spake ʾāmar יִרְמְיָ֙הוּ֙ Jeremiah yirmĕyâ אֶל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl הַשָּׂרִ֔ים the princes śar וְאֶל and to ʾēl כָּל all kōl הָעָ֖ם the people, ʿam לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה The Lord yĕhōwâ שְׁלָחַ֗נִי sent šālaḥ לְהִנָּבֵ֞א me to prophesy nābāʾ אֶל against ʾēl הַבַּ֤יִת house bayit הַזֶּה֙ this ze וְאֶל and against ʾēl הָעִ֣יר city ʿîr הַזֹּ֔את this zōt אֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֖ים the words dābār אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer שְׁמַעְתֶּֽם׃ ye have heard. šāmaʿ

וְעַתָּ֗ה Therefore now ʿattâ הֵיטִ֤יבוּ amend yāṭab דַרְכֵיכֶם֙ your ways derek וּמַ֣עַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם and your doings, maʿălāl וְשִׁמְע֕וּ and obey šāmaʿ בְּק֖וֹל the voice qôl יְהוָ֣ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם your God; ʾĕlōhîm וְיִנָּחֵ֣ם will repent nāḥam יְהוָ֔ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל him of ʾēl הָ֣רָעָ֔ה the evil raʿ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֖ר he hath pronounced dābar עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ against you. ʿal

וַאֲנִ֖י As for me, ʾănî הִנְנִ֣י behold, hēn בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם I in your hand: yād עֲשׂוּ do ʿāśâ לִ֛י כַּטּ֥וֹב good ṭôb וְכַיָּשָׁ֖ר and meet unto you. yāšār בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ with me as seemeth ʿayin

אַ֣ךְ׀ But ʾak יָדֹ֣עַ know yādaʿ תֵּדְע֗וּ ye for certain, yādaʿ כִּ֣י that kî אִם if ʾim מְמִתִ֣ים put me to death, mût אַתֶּם֮ ye ʾattâ אֹתִי֒ ʾēt כִּי shall surely kî דָ֣ם blood dām נָקִ֗י innocent nāqî אַתֶּם֙ ye ʾattâ נֹתְנִ֣ים bring nātan עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם upon ʿal וְאֶל yourselves, and upon ʾēl הָעִ֥יר city, ʿîr הַזֹּ֖את this zōt וְאֶל and upon ʾēl יֹשְׁבֶ֑יהָ the inhabitants yāšab כִּ֣י thereof: for kî בֶאֱמֶ֗ת of a truth ʾemet שְׁלָחַ֤נִי hath sent šālaḥ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם me unto ʿal לְדַבֵּר֙ you to speak dābar בְּאָזְנֵיכֶ֔ם in your ears. ʾōzen אֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֖ים words dābār הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ these ʾēlle

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ Then said ʾāmar הַשָּׂרִים֙ the princes śar וְכָל and all kōl הָעָ֔ם the people ʿam אֶל unto ʾēl הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים the priests kōhēn וְאֶל and to ʾēl הַנְּבִיאִ֑ים the prophets; nābîʾ אֵין not ʾayin לָאִ֤ישׁ man ʾîš הַזֶּה֙ This ze מִשְׁפַּט worthy mišpāṭ מָ֔וֶת to die: māwet כִּ֗י for kî בְּשֵׁ֛ם us in the name šēm יְהוָ֥ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ our God. ʾĕlōhîm דִּבֶּ֥ר he hath spoken dābar אֵלֵֽינוּ׃ to ʾēl

וַיָּקֻ֣מוּ Then rose up qûm אֲנָשִׁ֔ים certain ʾĕnôš מִזִּקְנֵ֖י of the elders zāqēn הָאָ֑רֶץ of the land, ʾereṣ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ and spake ʾāmar אֶל to ʾēl כָּל all kōl קְהַ֥ל the assembly qāhāl הָעָ֖ם of the people, ʿam לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

מִיכָיה֙ Micah mîkāyâ הַמּ֣וֹרַשְׁתִּ֔י the Morasthite môraštî הָיָ֣ה hāyâ נִבָּ֔א prophesied nābāʾ בִּימֵ֖י in the days yôm חִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ of Hezekiah ḥizqiyyâ מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֑ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and spake ʾāmar אֶל to ʾēl כָּל all kōl עַם֩ the people ʿam יְהוּדָ֨ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ לֵאמֹ֜ר saying, ʾāmar כֹּֽה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר׀ saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֗וֹת of hosts; ṣābāʾ צִיּ֞וֹן Zion ṣiyyôn שָׂדֶ֤ה a field, śāde תֵֽחָרֵשׁ֙ shall be plowed ḥāraš וִירוּשָׁלַ֙יִם֙ and Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim עִיִּ֣ים heaps, ʿî תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה shall become hāyâ וְהַ֥ר and the mountain har הַבַּ֖יִת of the house bayit לְבָמ֥וֹת as the high places bāmâ יָֽעַר׃ of a forest. yaʿar

הֶהָמֵ֣ת put him at all mût הֱ֠מִתֻהוּ to death? mût חִזְקִיָּ֨הוּ Did Hezekiah ḥizqiyyâ מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֜ה of Judah yĕhûdâ וְכָל and all kōl יְהוּדָ֗ה Judah yĕhûdâ הֲלֹא֮ did he not lōʾ יָרֵ֣א fear yārēʾ אֶת ʾēt יְהוָה֒ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיְחַל֙ and besought ḥālâ אֶת ʾēt פְּנֵ֣י pānîm יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם repented nāḥam יְהוָ֔ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל him of ʾēl הָרָעָ֖ה the evil raʿ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֣ר he had pronounced dābar עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם against them? ʿal וַאֲנַ֗חְנוּ Thus might we ʾănaḥnû עֹשִׂ֛ים procure ʿāśâ רָעָ֥ה evil raʿ גְדוֹלָ֖ה great gādôl עַל against ʿal נַפְשׁוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ our souls. nepeš

וְגַם also gam אִ֗ישׁ a man ʾîš הָיָ֤ה And there was hāyâ מִתְנַבֵּא֙ that prophesied nābāʾ בְּשֵׁ֣ם in the name šēm יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֽוּרִיָּ֙הוּ֙ Urijah ʾûriyyâ בֶּֽן the son bēn שְׁמַעְיָ֔הוּ of Shemaiah šĕmaʿyâ מִקִּרְיַ֖ת הַיְּעָרִ֑ים of Kirjath-jearim, qiryat yĕʿārîm וַיִּנָּבֵ֞א who prophesied nābāʾ עַל against ʿal הָעִ֤יר city ʿîr הַזֹּאת֙ this zōt וְעַל and against ʿal הָאָ֣רֶץ land ʾereṣ הַזֹּ֔את this zōt כְּכֹ֖ל according to all kōl דִּבְרֵ֥י the words dābār יִרְמְיָֽהוּ׃ of Jeremiah: yirmĕyâ

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע heard šāmaʿ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ the king, melek יְ֠הוֹיָקִים And when Jehoiakim yĕhôyāqîm וְכָל with all kōl גִּבּוֹרָ֤יו his mighty men, gibbôr וְכָל and all kōl הַשָּׂרִים֙ the princes, śar אֶת ʾēt דְּבָרָ֔יו his words, dābār וַיְבַקֵּ֥שׁ sought bāqaš הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek הֲמִית֑וֹ to put him to death: mût וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע heard šāmaʿ אוּרִיָּ֙הוּ֙ but when Urijah ʾûriyyâ וַיִּרָ֔א it, he was afraid, yārēʾ וַיִּבְרַ֖ח and fled, bāraḥ וַיָּבֹ֥א and went into bôʾ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ Egypt; miṣrayim

וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח sent šālaḥ הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ the king melek יְהוֹיָקִ֛ים And Jehoiakim yĕhôyāqîm אֲנָשִׁ֖ים men ʾîš מִצְרָ֑יִם into Egypt, miṣrayim אֵ֣ת ʾēt אֶלְנָתָ֧ן Elnathan ʾelnātān בֶּן the son bēn עַכְבּ֛וֹר of Achbor, ʿakbôr וַאֲנָשִׁ֥ים and men ʾîš אִתּ֖וֹ with ʾēt אֶל him into ʾēl מִצְרָֽיִם׃ Egypt. miṣrayim

וַיּוֹצִ֨יאוּ And they fetched forth yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt אוּרִיָּ֜הוּ Urijah ʾûriyyâ מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם out of Egypt, miṣrayim וַיְבִאֻ֙הוּ֙ and brought bôʾ אֶל him unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ the king; melek יְהוֹיָקִ֔ים Jehoiakim yĕhôyāqîm וַיַּכֵּ֖הוּ who slew nākâ בֶּחָ֑רֶב him with the sword, ḥereb וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ֙ and cast šālak אֶת ʾēt נִבְלָת֔וֹ his dead body nĕbēlâ אֶל into ʾēl קִבְרֵ֖י the graves qeber בְּנֵ֥י of the common bēn הָעָֽם׃ people. ʿam

אַ֗ךְ Nevertheless ʾak יַ֚ד the hand yād אֲחִיקָ֣ם of Ahikam ʾăḥîqām בֶּן the son bēn שָׁפָ֔ן of Shaphan šāpān הָיְתָ֖ה was hāyâ אֶֽת with ʾēt יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ Jeremiah, yirmĕyâ לְבִלְתִּ֛י that they should not biltî תֵּת give nātan אֹת֥וֹ ʾēt בְיַד him into the hand yād הָעָ֖ם of the people ʿam לַהֲמִיתֽוֹ׃ to put him to death. mût
