וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ בָּעֵ֣ת time, ʿēt הַהִ֔וא at that hûʾ וַיֵּ֥רֶד went down yārad יְהוּדָ֖ה that Judah yĕhûdâ מֵאֵ֣ת from ʾēt אֶחָ֑יו his brethren, ʾāḥ וַיֵּ֛ט and turned in nāṭâ עַד to ʿad אִ֥ישׁ a certain ʾîš עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י Adullamite, ʿădullāmî וּשְׁמ֥וֹ whose name šēm חִירָֽה׃ Hirah. ḥîrâ

וַיִּקַּ֧ח took lāqaḥ יְהוּדָ֛ה And Judah yĕhûdâ אִשָּׁ֖ה a wife ʾiššâ לְעֵ֣ר for Er ʿēr בְּכוֹר֑וֹ his firstborn, bĕkôr וּשְׁמָ֖הּ whose name šēm תָּמָֽר׃ Tamar. tāmār

וַיְהִ֗י was hāyâ עֵ֚ר And Er, ʿēr בְּכ֣וֹר firstborn, bĕkôr יְהוּדָ֔ה Judah's yĕhûdâ רַ֖ע wicked raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord; yĕhōwâ וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ slew him. mût יְהוָֽה׃ and the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיֵּ֣דַע knew yādaʿ אוֹנָ֔ן And Onan ʾônān כִּ֛י that kî לֹּ֥א should not lōʾ ל֖וֹ יִֽהְיֶ֣ה be hāyâ הַזָּ֑רַע the seed zeraʿ וְהָיָ֞ה his; and it came to pass, hāyâ אִם when ʾim בָּ֨א he went in bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl אֵ֤שֶׁת wife, ʾiššâ אָחִיו֙ his brother's ʾāḥ וְשִׁחֵ֣ת that he spilled šāḥat אַ֔רְצָה on the ground, ʾereṣ לְבִלְתִּ֥י lest biltî נְתָן that he should give nātan זֶ֖רַע seed zeraʿ לְאָחִֽיו׃ to his brother. ʾāḥ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר Then said ʾāmar יְהוּדָה֩ Judah yĕhûdâ לְתָמָ֨ר to Tamar tāmār כַּלָּת֜וֹ his daughter in law, kallâ שְׁבִ֧י Remain yāšab אַלְמָנָ֣ה a widow ʾalmānâ בֵית house, bayit אָבִ֗יךְ at thy father's ʾāb עַד till ʿad יִגְדַּל֙ be grown: gādal שֵׁלָ֣ה Shelah šēlâ בְנִ֔י my son bēn כִּ֣י for kî אָמַ֔ר he said, ʾāmar פֶּן Lest peradventure pēn יָמ֥וּת die mût גַּם also, gam ה֖וּא he hûʾ כְּאֶחָ֑יו as his brethren ʾāḥ וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ went hālak תָּמָ֔ר And Tamar tāmār וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב and dwelt yāšab בֵּ֥ית house. bayit אָבִֽיהָ׃ in her father's ʾāb

וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ And in process rābâ הַיָּמִ֔ים of time yôm וַתָּ֖מָת died; mût בַּת the daughter bat שׁ֣וּעַ of Shuah šûaʿ אֵֽשֶׁת wife ʾiššâ יְהוּדָ֑ה Judah's yĕhûdâ וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם was comforted, nāḥam יְהוּדָ֗ה and Judah yĕhûdâ וַיַּ֜עַל and went up ʿālâ עַל unto ʿal גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י his sheepshearers gāzaz צֹאנוֹ֙ ṣōn ה֗וּא he hûʾ וְחִירָ֛ה Hirah ḥîrâ רֵעֵ֥הוּ and his friend rēaʿ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י the Adullamite. ʿădullāmî תִּמְנָֽתָה׃ to Timnath, timnâ

וַיֻּגַּ֥ד And it was told nāgad לְתָמָ֖ר Tamar, tāmār לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֥ה Behold hinnē חָמִ֛יךְ thy father in law ḥām עֹלֶ֥ה goeth up ʿālâ תִמְנָ֖תָה to Timnath timnâ לָגֹ֥ז to shear gāzaz צֹאנֽוֹ׃ his sheep. ṣōn

וַתָּסַר֩ And she put sûr בִּגְדֵ֨י garments beged אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ her widow's ʾalmānût מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ off from ʿal וַתְּכַ֤ס her, and covered her kāsâ בַּצָּעִיף֙ with a vail, ṣāʿîp וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף and wrapped herself, ʿālap וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ and sat in yāšab בְּפֶ֣תַח place, petaḥ עֵינַ֔יִם an open ʿayin אֲשֶׁ֖ר which ʾăšer עַל by ʿal דֶּ֣רֶךְ the way derek תִּמְנָ֑תָה to Timnath; timnâ כִּ֤י for kî רָֽאֲתָה֙ she saw rāʾâ כִּֽי that kî גָדַ֣ל was grown, gādal שֵׁלָ֔ה Shelah šēlâ וְהִ֕וא and she hûʾ לֹֽא was not lōʾ נִתְּנָ֥ה given nātan ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ unto him to wife. ʾiššâ

וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ saw her, rāʾâ יְהוּדָ֔ה When Judah yĕhûdâ וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ he thought ḥāšab לְזוֹנָ֑ה her an harlot; zānâ כִּ֥י because kî כִסְּתָ֖ה she had covered kāsâ פָּנֶֽיהָ׃ her face. pānîm

וַיֵּ֨ט And he turned nāṭâ אֵלֶ֜יהָ unto ʾēl אֶל her by ʾēl הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ the way, derek וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said, ʾāmar הָֽבָה Go to, yāhab נָּא֙ I pray thee, nāʾ אָב֣וֹא let me come in bôʾ אֵלַ֔יִךְ unto ʾēl כִּ֚י thee; (for kî לֹ֣א not lōʾ יָדַ֔ע he knew yādaʿ כִּ֥י that kî כַלָּת֖וֹ his daughter in law.) kallâ הִ֑וא she hûʾ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ And she said, ʾāmar מַה What mâ תִּתֶּן wilt thou give nātan לִּ֔י כִּ֥י me, that kî תָב֖וֹא thou mayest come in bôʾ אֵלָֽי׃ unto me? ʾēl

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אָֽנֹכִ֛י I ʾānōkî אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח will send šālaḥ גְּדִֽי gĕdî עִזִּ֖ים a kid ʿēz מִן from min הַצֹּ֑אן the flock. ṣōn וַתֹּ֕אמֶר And she said, ʾāmar אִם ʾim תִּתֵּ֥ן Wilt thou give nātan עֵֽרָב֖וֹן a pledge, ʿărābôn עַ֥ד till ʿad שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃ thou send šālaḥ

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar מָ֣ה What mâ הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮ pledge ʿărābôn אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer אֶתֶּן shall I give nātan לָּךְ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר thee? And she said, ʾāmar חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ Thy signet, ḥôtām וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ and thy bracelets, pātîl וּמַטְּךָ֖ and thy staff maṭṭe אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ in thine hand. yād וַיִּתֶּן And he gave nātan לָּ֛הּ וַיָּבֹ֥א her, and came in bôʾ אֵלֶ֖יהָ unto ʾēl וַתַּ֥הַר her, and she conceived by him. hārâ לֽוֹ׃

וַתָּ֣קָם And she arose, qûm וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ and went away, hālak וַתָּ֥סַר and laid by sûr צְעִיפָ֖הּ her vail ṣāʿîp מֵֽעָלֶ֑יהָ from ʿal וַתִּלְבַּ֖שׁ her, and put on lābaš בִּגְדֵ֥י the garments beged אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃ of her widowhood. ʾalmānût

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ יְהוּדָ֜ה And Judah yĕhûdâ אֶת ʾēt גְּדִ֣י the kid gĕdî הָֽעִזִּ֗ים ʿēz בְּיַד֙ by the hand yād רֵעֵ֣הוּ of his friend rēaʿ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י the Adullamite, ʿădullāmî לָקַ֥חַת to receive lāqaḥ הָעֵֽרָב֖וֹן pledge ʿărābôn מִיַּ֣ד hand: yād הָֽאִשָּׁ֑ה from the woman's ʾiššâ וְלֹ֖א not. lōʾ מְצָאָֽהּ׃ but he found her māṣāʾ

וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל Then he asked šāʾal אֶת ʾēt אַנְשֵׁ֤י the men ʾĕnôš מְקֹמָהּ֙ of that place, māqôm לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar אַיֵּ֧ה Where ʾayyē הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה the harlot, qĕdēšâ הִ֥וא that hûʾ בָֽעֵינַ֖יִם openly ʿênayim עַל by ʿal הַדָּ֑רֶךְ the way side? derek וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ And they said, ʾāmar לֹֽא no lōʾ הָיְתָ֥ה There was hāyâ בָזֶ֖ה in this ze קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ harlot qĕdēšâ

וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ And he returned šûb אֶל to ʾēl יְהוּדָ֔ה Judah, yĕhûdâ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar לֹ֣א I cannot lōʾ מְצָאתִ֑יהָ find māṣāʾ וְגַ֨ם her; and also gam אַנְשֵׁ֤י the men ʾîš הַמָּקוֹם֙ of the place māqôm אָֽמְר֔וּ said, ʾāmar לֹֽא no lōʾ הָיְתָ֥ה there was hāyâ בָזֶ֖ה in this ze קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ harlot qĕdēšâ

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said, ʾāmar יְהוּדָה֙ And Judah yĕhûdâ תִּֽקַּֽח Let her take lāqaḥ לָ֔הּ פֶּ֖ן to her, lest pēn נִֽהְיֶ֣ה we be hāyâ לָב֑וּז shamed: bûz הִנֵּ֤ה behold, hinnē שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙ I sent šālaḥ הַגְּדִ֣י kid, gĕdî הַזֶּ֔ה this ze וְאַתָּ֖ה and thou ʾattâ לֹ֥א hast not lōʾ מְצָאתָֽהּ׃ found her. māṣāʾ

וַיְהִ֣י׀ And it came to pass hāyâ כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ about three šālôš חֳדָשִׁ֗ים months ḥōdeš וַיֻּגַּ֨ד after, that it was told nāgad לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה Judah, yĕhûdâ לֵאמֹר֙ saying, ʾāmar זָֽנְתָה֙ hath played the harlot; zānâ תָּמָ֣ר Tamar tāmār כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ thy daughter in law kallâ וְגַ֛ם and also, gam הִנֵּ֥ה behold, hinnē הָרָ֖ה she with child hāre לִזְנוּנִ֑ים by whoredom. zānûn וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar יְהוּדָ֔ה And Judah yĕhûdâ הֽוֹצִיא֖וּהָ Bring her forth, yāṣāʾ וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃ and let her be burnt. śārap

הִ֣וא When she hûʾ מוּצֵ֗את brought forth, yāṣāʾ וְהִ֨יא she hûʾ שָֽׁלְחָ֤ה sent šālaḥ אֶל to ʾēl חָמִ֙יהָ֙ her father in law, ḥām לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar לְאִישׁ֙ By the man, ʾĕnôš אֲשֶׁר whose ʾăšer אֵ֣לֶּה these ʾēlle לּ֔וֹ אָֽנֹכִ֖י I ʾānōkî הָרָ֑ה with child: hāre וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and she said, ʾāmar הַכֶּר Discern, nākar נָ֔א I pray thee, nāʾ לְמִ֞י whose mî הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת the signet, ḥōtemet וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים and bracelets, pātîl וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה and staff. maṭṭe הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ these, ʾēlle

וַיַּכֵּ֣ר acknowledged nākar יְהוּדָ֗ה And Judah yĕhûdâ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said, ʾāmar צָֽדְקָ֣ה She hath been more righteous ṣādaq מִמֶּ֔נִּי than min כִּֽי I; because kî עַל ʿal כֵּ֥ן that kēn לֹֽא her not lōʾ נְתַתִּ֖יהָ I gave nātan לְשֵׁלָ֣ה to Shelah šēlâ בְנִ֑י my son. bēn וְלֹֽא no lōʾ יָסַ֥ף again yāsap ע֖וֹד more. ʿôd לְדַעְתָּֽה׃ And he knew her yādaʿ

וַיְהִ֖י And it came to pass hāyâ בְּעֵ֣ת in the time ʿēt לִדְתָּ֑הּ of her travail, yālad וְהִנֵּ֥ה that, behold, hinnē תְאוֹמִ֖ים twins tāʾôm בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃ in her womb. beṭen

וַיְהִ֥י And it came to pass, hāyâ בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ when she travailed, yālad וַיִּתֶּן that put out nātan יָ֑ד hand: yād וַתִּקַּ֣ח took lāqaḥ הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת and the midwife yālad וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר and bound qāšar עַל upon ʿal יָד֤וֹ his hand yād שָׁנִי֙ a scarlet thread, šānî לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar זֶ֖ה This ze יָצָ֥א came out yāṣāʾ רִֽאשֹׁנָֽה׃ first. riʾšôn

וַיְהִ֣י׀ And it came to pass, hāyâ כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב as he drew back šûb יָד֗וֹ his hand, yād וְהִנֵּה֙ that, behold, hinnē יָצָ֣א came out: yāṣāʾ אָחִ֔יו his brother ʾāḥ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר and she said, ʾāmar מַה How mâ פָּרַ֖צְתָּ hast thou broken forth? pāraṣ עָלֶ֣יךָ upon ʿal פָּ֑רֶץ breach pereṣ וַיִּקְרָ֥א was called qārāʾ שְׁמ֖וֹ thee: therefore his name šēm פָּֽרֶץ׃ Pharez. pereṣ

וְאַחַר֙ And afterward ʾaḥar יָצָ֣א came out yāṣāʾ אָחִ֔יו his brother, ʾāḥ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer עַל upon ʿal יָד֖וֹ his hand: yād הַשָּׁנִ֑י had the scarlet thread šānî וַיִּקְרָ֥א was called qārāʾ שְׁמ֖וֹ and his name šēm זָֽרַח׃ Zarah. zeraḥ
