וּזְכֹר֙ Remember zākar אֶת now ʾēt בּ֣וֹרְאֶ֔יךָ thy Creator bārāʾ בִּימֵ֖י in the days yôm בְּחוּרֹתֶ֑יךָ of thy youth, bĕḥurôt עַ֣ד while ʿad אֲשֶׁ֤ר ʾăšer לֹא not, lōʾ יָבֹ֙אוּ֙ come bôʾ יְמֵ֣י days yôm הָֽרָעָ֔ה the evil raʿ וְהִגִּ֣יעוּ draw nigh, nāgaʿ שָׁנִ֔ים nor the years šāne אֲשֶׁ֣ר when ʾăšer תֹּאמַ֔ר thou shalt say, ʾāmar אֵֽין I have no ʾayin לִ֥י בָהֶ֖ם חֵֽפֶץ׃ pleasure in them; ḥēpeṣ

עַ֠ד While ʿad אֲשֶׁ֨ר ʾăšer לֹֽא be not lōʾ תֶחְשַׁ֤ךְ darkened, ḥāšak הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ the sun, šemeš וְהָא֔וֹר or the light, ʾôr וְהַיָּרֵ֖חַ or the moon, yārēaḥ וְהַכּוֹכָבִ֑ים or the stars, kôkāb וְשָׁ֥בוּ return šûb הֶעָבִ֖ים nor the clouds ʿāb אַחַ֥ר after ʾaḥar הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃ the rain: gešem

בַּיּ֗וֹם In the day yôm שֶׁיָּזֻ֙עוּ֙ shall tremble, zûaʿ שֹׁמְרֵ֣י when the keepers šāmar הַבַּ֔יִת of the house bayit וְהִֽתְעַוְּת֖וּ shall bow themselves, ʿāwat אַנְשֵׁ֣י men ʾîš הֶחָ֑יִל and the strong ḥayil וּבָטְל֤וּ cease bāṭēl הַטֹּֽחֲנוֹת֙ and the grinders ṭāḥan כִּ֣י because kî מִעֵ֔טוּ they are few, māʿaṭ וְחָשְׁכ֥וּ be darkened, ḥāšak הָרֹא֖וֹת and those that look out rāʾâ בָּאֲרֻבּֽוֹת׃ of the windows ʾărubbâ

עַ֣ד Or ʿad אֲשֶׁ֤ר ʾăšer לֹֽא ever lōʾ יֵרָחֵק֙ be loosed, rāḥaq חֶ֣בֶל cord ḥebel הַכֶּ֔סֶף the silver kesep וְתָרֻ֖ץ be broken, rāṣaṣ גֻּלַּ֣ת bowl gullâ הַזָּהָ֑ב or the golden zāhāb וְתִשָּׁ֤בֶר be broken šābar כַּד֙ or the pitcher kad עַל at ʿal הַמַּבּ֔וּעַ the fountain, mabbûaʿ וְנָרֹ֥ץ broken rāṣaṣ הַגַּלְגַּ֖ל or the wheel galgal אֶל at ʾēl הַבּֽוֹר׃ the cistern. bôr

וְיָשֹׁ֧ב return šûb הֶעָפָ֛ר Then shall the dust ʿāpār עַל to ʿal הָאָ֖רֶץ the earth ʾereṣ כְּשֶׁהָיָ֑ה as it was: hāyâ וְהָר֣וּחַ and the spirit rûaḥ תָּשׁ֔וּב shall return šûb אֶל unto ʾēl הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים God ʾĕlōhîm אֲשֶׁ֥ר who ʾăšer נְתָנָֽהּ׃ gave it. nātan

הֲבֵ֧ל Vanity hebel הֲבָלִ֛ים of vanities, hebel אָמַ֥ר saith ʾāmar הַקּוֹהֶ֖לֶת the preacher; qōhelet הַכֹּ֥ל all kōl הָֽבֶל׃ vanity. hebel

וְיֹתֵ֕ר And moreover, yôtēr שֶׁהָיָ֥ה was hāyâ קֹהֶ֖לֶת because the preacher qōhelet חָכָ֑ם wise, ḥākām ע֗וֹד he still ʿôd לִמַּד taught lāmad דַּ֙עַת֙ knowledge; daʿat אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֔ם the people ʿam וְאִזֵּ֣ן yea, he gave good heed, ʾāzan וְחִקֵּ֔ר and sought out, ḥāqar תִּקֵּ֖ן set in order tāqan מְשָׁלִ֥ים proverbs. māšāl הַרְבֵּֽה׃ many rābâ

בִּקֵּ֣שׁ sought bāqaš קֹהֶ֔לֶת The preacher qōhelet לִמְצֹ֖א to find out māṣāʾ דִּבְרֵי words: dābār חֵ֑פֶץ acceptable ḥēpeṣ וְכָת֥וּב and written kātab יֹ֖שֶׁר upright, yōšer דִּבְרֵ֥י words dābār אֱמֶֽת׃ of truth. ʾemet

דִּבְרֵ֤י The words dābār חֲכָמִים֙ of the wise ḥākām כַּדָּ֣רְבֹנ֔וֹת as goads, dorbôn וּֽכְמַשְׂמְר֥וֹת and as nails maśmĕrâ נְטוּעִ֖ים fastened nāṭaʿ בַּעֲלֵ֣י the masters baʿal אֲסֻפּ֑וֹת of assemblies, ʾăsuppâ נִתְּנ֖וּ are given nātan מֵרֹעֶ֥ה shepherd. rāʿâ אֶחָֽד׃ from one ʾeḥād

וְיֹתֵ֥ר And further, yôtēr מֵהֵ֖מָּה by these, hēm בְּנִ֣י my son, bēn הִזָּהֵ֑ר be admonished: zāhar עֲשׂ֨וֹת of making ʿāśâ סְפָרִ֤ים books sēper הַרְבֵּה֙ many rābâ אֵ֣ין no ʾayin קֵ֔ץ end; qēṣ וְלַ֥הַג study lahag הַרְבֵּ֖ה and much rābâ יְגִעַ֥ת a weariness yĕgiʿâ בָּשָֽׂר׃ of the flesh. bāśār

ס֥וֹף the conclusion sôp דָּבָ֖ר matter: dābār הַכֹּ֣ל of the whole kōl נִשְׁמָ֑ע Let us hear šāmaʿ אֶת ʾēt הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים God, ʾĕlōhîm יְרָא֙ Fear yārēʾ וְאֶת ʾēt מִצְוֹתָ֣יו his commandments: miṣwâ שְׁמ֔וֹר and keep šāmar כִּי for kî זֶ֖ה this ze כָּל the whole kōl הָאָדָֽם׃ of man. ʾādām

כִּ֤י For kî אֶת ʾēt כָּל every kōl מַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה work maʿăśe הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים God ʾĕlōhîm יָבִ֥א shall bring bôʾ בְמִשְׁפָּ֖ט into judgment, mišpāṭ עַ֣ל with ʿal כָּל every kōl נֶעְלָ֑ם secret thing, ʿālam אִם whether ʾim ט֖וֹב good, ṭôb וְאִם or whether ʾim רָֽע׃ evil. raʿ
