כִּֽי When kî יַכְרִ֞ית hath cut off kārat יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ thy God ʾĕlōhîm אֶת ʾēt הַגּוֹיִ֔ם the nations, gôy אֲשֶׁר֙ whose ʾăšer יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm נֹתֵ֥ן giveth nātan לְךָ֖ אֶת ʾēt אַרְצָ֑ם land ʾereṣ וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֕ם thee, and thou succeedest yāraš וְיָֽשַׁבְתָּ֥ them, and dwellest yāšab בְעָֽרֵיהֶ֖ם in their cities, ʿîr וּבְבָֽתֵּיהֶֽם׃ and in their houses; bayit

שָׁל֥וֹשׁ three šālôš עָרִ֖ים cities ʿîr תַּבְדִּ֣יל Thou shalt separate bādal לָ֑ךְ בְּת֣וֹךְ for thee in the midst tāwek אַרְצְךָ֔ of thy land, ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm נֹתֵ֥ן giveth nātan לְךָ֖ לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ thee to possess it. yāraš

תָּכִ֣ין Thou shalt prepare kûn לְךָ֮ הַדֶּרֶךְ֒ thee a way, derek וְשִׁלַּשְׁתָּ֙ and divide parts, šālaš אֶת ʾēt גְּב֣וּל the coasts gĕbûl אַרְצְךָ֔ of thy land, ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer יַנְחִֽילְךָ֖ giveth thee to inherit, nāḥal יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm וְהָיָ֕ה may hāyâ לָנ֥וּס flee nûs שָׁ֖מָּה thither. šām כָּל into three that every kōl רֹצֵֽחַ׃ slayer rāṣaḥ

וְזֶה֙ And this ze דְּבַ֣ר the case dābār הָֽרֹצֵ֔חַ of the slayer, rāṣaḥ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer יָנ֥וּס shall flee nûs שָׁ֖מָּה thither, šām וָחָ֑י that he may live: ḥāyay אֲשֶׁ֨ר Whoso ʾăšer יַכֶּ֤ה killeth nākâ אֶת ʾēt רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ his neighbour rēaʿ בִּבְלִי ignorantly, bĕlî דַ֔עַת daʿat וְה֛וּא whom he hûʾ לֹֽא not lōʾ שֹׂנֵ֥א hated śānēʾ ל֖וֹ מִתְּמֹ֥ל in time tĕmôl שִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃ past; šilšôm

וַֽאֲשֶׁר֩ As when a man ʾăšer יָבֹ֨א goeth bôʾ אֶת with ʾēt רֵעֵ֥הוּ his neighbour rēaʿ בַיַּעַר֮ into the wood yaʿar לַחְטֹ֣ב to hew ḥāṭab עֵצִים֒ wood, ʿēṣ וְנִדְּחָ֨ה fetcheth a stroke nādaḥ יָד֤וֹ and his hand yād בַגַּרְזֶן֙ with the axe garzen לִכְרֹ֣ת to cut down kārat הָעֵ֔ץ the tree, ʿēṣ וְנָשַׁ֤ל slippeth nāšal הַבַּרְזֶל֙ and the head barzel מִן from min הָעֵ֔ץ the helve, ʿēṣ וּמָצָ֥א and lighteth upon māṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt רֵעֵ֖הוּ his neighbour, rēaʿ וָמֵ֑ת that he die; mût ה֗וּא he hûʾ יָנ֛וּס shall flee nûs אֶל unto ʾēl אַחַ֥ת one ʾeḥād הֶֽעָרִים cities, ʿîr הָאֵ֖לֶּה of those ʾēlle וָחָֽי׃ and live: ḥāyay

פֶּן Lest pēn יִרְדֹּף֩ pursue rādap גֹּאֵ֨ל the avenger gāʾal הַדָּ֜ם of the blood dām אַֽחֲרֵ֣י the slayer, ʾaḥar הָֽרֹצֵ֗חַ rāṣaḥ כִּֽי while kî יֵחַם֮ is hot, yāḥam לְבָבוֹ֒ his heart lēbāb וְהִשִּׂיג֛וֹ and overtake nāśag כִּֽי him, because kî יִרְבֶּ֥ה is long, rābâ הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ the way derek וְהִכָּ֣הוּ and slay nākâ נָ֑פֶשׁ him; nepeš וְלוֹ֙ אֵ֣ין whereas he not ʾayin מִשְׁפַּט worthy mišpāṭ מָ֔וֶת of death, māwet כִּ֠י inasmuch as kî לֹ֣א him not lōʾ שֹׂנֵ֥א hated śānēʾ ה֛וּא he hûʾ ל֖וֹ מִתְּמ֥וֹל in time tĕmôl שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ past. šilšôm

עַל Wherefore ʿal כֵּ֛ן kēn אָֽנֹכִ֥י I ʾānōkî מְצַוְּךָ֖ command ṣāwâ לֵאמֹ֑ר thee, saying, ʾāmar שָׁלֹ֥שׁ three šālôš עָרִ֖ים cities for thee. ʿîr תַּבְדִּ֥יל Thou shalt separate bādal לָֽךְ׃

וְאִם And if ʾim יַרְחִ֞יב enlarge rāḥab יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ thy God ʾĕlōhîm אֶת ʾēt גְּבֻ֣לְךָ֔ thy coast, gĕbûl כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer נִשְׁבַּ֖ע he hath sworn šābaʿ לַֽאֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ unto thy fathers, ʾāb וְנָ֤תַן and give nātan לְךָ֙ אֶת thee ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָאָ֔רֶץ the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֖ר he promised dābar לָתֵ֥ת to give nātan לַֽאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ unto thy fathers; ʾāb

כִּֽי If kî תִשְׁמֹר֩ thou shalt keep šāmar אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַמִּצְוָ֨ה commandments miṣwâ הַזֹּ֜את these zōt לַֽעֲשֹׂתָ֗הּ to do ʿāśâ אֲשֶׁ֨ר them, which ʾăšer אָֽנֹכִ֣י I ʾānōkî מְצַוְּךָ֮ command ṣāwâ הַיּוֹם֒ thee this day, yôm לְאַֽהֲבָ֞ה to love ʾāhab אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֧ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ thy God, ʾĕlōhîm וְלָלֶ֥כֶת and to walk hālak בִּדְרָכָ֖יו in his ways; derek כָּל kōl הַיָּמִ֑ים ever yôm וְיָֽסַפְתָּ֙ then shalt thou add yāsap לְךָ֥ עוֹד֙ more ʿôd שָׁלֹ֣שׁ three šālôš עָרִ֔ים cities ʿîr עַ֖ל for thee, beside ʿal הַשָּׁלֹ֥שׁ three: šālôš הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ these ʾēlle

וְלֹ֤א be not lōʾ יִשָּׁפֵךְ֙ shed šāpak דָּ֣ם blood dām נָקִ֔י That innocent nāqî בְּקֶ֣רֶב in qereb אַרְצְךָ֔ thy land, ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm נֹתֵ֥ן giveth nātan לְךָ֖ נַֽחֲלָ֑ה thee an inheritance, naḥălâ וְהָיָ֥ה be hāyâ עָלֶ֖יךָ upon thee. ʿal דָּמִֽים׃ and blood dām

וְכִֽי But if kî יִהְיֶ֥ה hāyâ אִישׁ֙ any man ʾîš שֹׂנֵ֣א hate śānēʾ לְרֵעֵ֔הוּ his neighbour, rēaʿ וְאָ֤רַב and lie in wait ʾārab לוֹ֙ וְקָ֣ם for him, and rise up qûm עָלָ֔יו against ʿal וְהִכָּ֥הוּ him, and smite nākâ נֶ֖פֶשׁ him mortally nepeš וָמֵ֑ת that he die, mût וְנָ֕ס and fleeth nûs אֶל into ʾēl אַחַ֖ת one ʾeḥād הֶֽעָרִ֥ים cities: ʿîr הָאֵֽל׃ of these ʾēl

וְשָֽׁלְחוּ֙ shall send šālaḥ זִקְנֵ֣י Then the elders zāqēn עִיר֔וֹ of his city ʿîr וְלָֽקְח֥וּ and fetch lāqaḥ אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt מִשָּׁ֑ם him thence, šām וְנָֽתְנ֣וּ and deliver nātan אֹת֗וֹ ʾēt בְּיַ֛ד him into the hand yād גֹּאֵ֥ל of the avenger gāʾal הַדָּ֖ם of blood, dām וָמֵֽת׃ that he may die. mût

לֹֽא shall not lōʾ תָח֥וֹס pity ḥûs עֵֽינְךָ֖ Thine eye ʿayin עָלָ֑יו ʿal וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֧ him, but thou shalt put away bāʿar דַֽם blood dām הַנָּקִ֛י innocent nāqî מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖ל from Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְט֥וֹב that it may go well with thee. ṭôb לָֽךְ׃ hālak

לֹ֤א Thou shalt not lōʾ תַסִּיג֙ remove nāsag גְּב֣וּל landmark, gĕbûl רֵֽעֲךָ֔ thy neighbour's rēaʿ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer גָּֽבְל֖וּ have set gābal רִֽאשֹׁנִ֑ים they of old time riʾšôn בְּנַחֲלָֽתְךָ֙ in thine inheritance, naḥălâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer תִּנְחַ֔ל thou shalt inherit nāḥal בָּאָ֕רֶץ in the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁר֙ that ʾăšer יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm נֹתֵ֥ן giveth nātan לְךָ֖ לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ thee to possess it. yāraš

לֹֽא shall not lōʾ יָקוּם֩ rise up qûm עֵ֨ד witness ʿēd אֶחָ֜ד One ʾeḥād בְּאִ֗ישׁ against a man ʾîš לְכָל for any kōl עָוֹן֙ iniquity, ʿāwōn וּלְכָל or for any kōl חַטָּ֔את sin, ḥaṭṭāʾâ בְּכָל in any kōl חֵ֖טְא sin ḥēṭĕʾ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer יֶֽחֱטָ֑א he sinneth: ḥāṭāʾ עַל at ʿal פִּ֣י׀ the mouth pe שְׁנֵ֣י of two šĕnayim עֵדִ֗ים witnesses, ʿēd א֛וֹ or ʾô עַל at ʿal פִּ֥י the mouth pe שְׁלֹשָֽׁה of three šālôš עֵדִ֖ים witnesses, ʿēd יָק֥וּם be established. qûm דָּבָֽר׃ shall the matter dābār

כִּֽי If kî יָק֥וּם rise up qûm עֵד witness ʿēd חָמָ֖ס a false ḥāmās בְּאִ֑ישׁ against any man ʾîš לַֽעֲנ֥וֹת to testify ʿānâ בּ֖וֹ סָרָֽה׃ against him wrong; sārâ

וְעָֽמְד֧וּ shall stand ʿāmad שְׁנֵֽי Then both šĕnayim הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים the men, ʾîš אֲשֶׁר between whom ʾăšer לָהֶ֥ם in those hēm הָרִ֖יב the controversy rîb לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ לִפְנֵ֤י before pānîm הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ the priests kōhēn וְהַשֹּׁ֣פְטִ֔ים and the judges, šāpaṭ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer יִֽהְי֖וּ shall be hāyâ בַּיָּמִ֥ים days; yôm הָהֵֽם׃ hēm

וְדָֽרְשׁ֥וּ inquisition: dāraš הַשֹּֽׁפְטִ֖ים And the judges šāpaṭ הֵיטֵ֑ב shall make diligent yāṭab וְהִנֵּ֤ה and, behold, hinnē עֵֽד the witness ʿēd שֶׁ֙קֶר֙ a false šeqer הָעֵ֔ד witness, ʿēd שֶׁ֖קֶר falsely šeqer עָנָ֥ה hath testified ʿānâ בְאָחִֽיו׃ against his brother; ʾāḥ

וַֽעֲשִׂ֣יתֶם Then shall ye do ʿāśâ ל֔וֹ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר unto him, as ʾăšer זָמַ֖ם he had thought zāmam לַֽעֲשׂ֣וֹת to have done ʿāśâ לְאָחִ֑יו unto his brother: ʾāḥ וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ so shalt thou put bāʿar הָרָ֖ע the evil raʿ מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ away from among you. qereb

וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִ֖ים And those which remain šāʾar יִשְׁמְע֣וּ shall hear, šāmaʿ וְיִרָ֑אוּ and fear, yārēʾ וְלֹֽא no lōʾ יֹסִ֨פוּ and shall henceforth yāsap לַֽעֲשׂ֜וֹת commit ʿāśâ ע֗וֹד more ʿôd כַּדָּבָ֥ר any dābār הָרָ֛ע evil raʿ הַזֶּ֖ה such ze בְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃ among you. qereb

וְלֹ֥א shall not lōʾ תָח֖וֹס pity; ḥûs עֵינֶ֑ךָ And thine eye ʿayin נֶ֣פֶשׁ life nepeš בְּנֶ֗פֶשׁ for life, nepeš עַ֤יִן eye ʿayin בְּעַ֙יִן֙ for eye, ʿayin שֵׁ֣ן tooth šēn בְּשֵׁ֔ן for tooth, šēn יָ֥ד hand yād בְּיָ֖ד for hand, yād רֶ֥גֶל foot regel בְּרָֽגֶל׃ for foot. regel
