சூரியன் உதித்தபோது தேவன் உஷ்ணமான கீழ்க்காற்றைக் கட்டளையிட்டார்; அப்பொழுது வெயில் யோனாவுடைய தலையில் படுகிறதினால் அவன் சோர்ந்துபோய், தனக்குள்ளே சாவை விரும்பி: நான் ஊயிரோடிருக்கிறதைப் பார்க்கிலும் சாகிறது நலமாயிருக்கும் என்றான்.

சூரியன் உதித்தபோது தேவன் வெப்பமான கீழ்க்காற்றைக் கட்டளையிட்டார்; அப்பொழுது வெயில் யோனாவுடைய தலையில் படுகிறதினால் அவன் சோர்ந்துபோய், தனக்குள்ளே சாவை விரும்பி: நான் உயிரோடு இருக்கிறதைவிட சாகிறது நலமாக இருக்கும் என்றான்.

சூரியன் வானத்தில் உயரமாக வந்தபோது, தேவன் சூடான கிழக்குக் காற்று வீசச் செய்தார். சூரியன் யோனாவின் தலையை மிகச் சூடாக்கியது. யோனா மிகமிகப் பலவீனமானான், யோனா தன்னை மரிக்கவிடும்படி தேவனிடம் வேண்டினான். யோனா, “நான் உயிர் வாழ்வதைவிட மரிப்பதே நல்லது” என்றான்.

கதிரவன் எழுந்தபின் கடவுளின் கட்டளைப்படி, கிழக்கிலிருந்து அனற்காற்று வீசிற்று. கடும் வெயில் யோனாவின் தலையைத் தாக்கவே அவருக்கு மயக்கம் உண்டாயிற்று. “வாழ்வதைவிடச் சாவதே எனக்கு நல்லது” என்று அவர் சொல்லி, தமக்குச் சாவு வரவேண்டுமென்று வேண்டிக் கொண்டார்.⒫
