וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ That the king melek אֶל unto ʾēl נָתָ֣ן Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֔יא the prophet, nābîʾ רְאֵ֣ה See rāʾâ נָ֔א now, nāʾ אָֽנֹכִ֥י I ʾānōkî יוֹשֵׁ֖ב dwell yāšab בְּבֵ֣ית in an house bayit אֲרָזִ֑ים of cedar, ʾerez וַֽאֲרוֹן֙ but the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm יֹשֵׁ֖ב dwelleth yāšab בְּת֥וֹךְ within tāwek הַיְרִיעָֽה׃ curtains. yĕrîʿâ

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar נָתָן֙ And Nathan nātān אֶל to ʾēl הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek כֹּ֛ל all kōl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer בִּֽלְבָבְךָ֖ in thine heart; lēbāb לֵ֣ךְ Go, hālak עֲשֵׂ֑ה do ʿāśâ כִּ֥י for kî יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ עִמָּֽךְ׃ with thee. ʿim

לֵ֤ךְ Go hālak וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ and tell ʾāmar אֶל ʾēl עַבְדִּ֣י my servant ʿebed אֶל ʾēl דָּוִ֔ד David, dāwid כֹּ֖ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ הַֽאַתָּ֛ה Shalt thou ʾattâ תִּבְנֶה build bānâ לִּ֥י בַ֖יִת me an house bayit לְשִׁבְתִּֽי׃ for me to dwell in? yāšab

כִּ֣י Whereas kî לֹ֤א I have not lōʾ יָשַׁ֙בְתִּי֙ dwelt yāšab בְּבַ֔יִת in house bayit לְ֠מִיּוֹם since the time yôm הַֽעֲלֹתִ֞י that I brought up ʿālâ אֶת ʾēt בְּנֵ֤י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם out of Egypt, miṣrayim וְעַ֖ד even to ʿad הַיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַזֶּ֑ה this ze וָאֶֽהְיֶה֙ but have hāyâ מִתְהַלֵּ֔ךְ walked hālak בְּאֹ֖הֶל in a tent ʾōhel וּבְמִשְׁכָּֽן׃ and in a tabernacle. miškān

בְּכֹ֥ל In all kōl אֲשֶֽׁר wherein ʾăšer הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי֮ I have walked hālak בְּכָל with all kōl בְּנֵ֣י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ of Israel yiśrāʾēl הֲדָבָ֣ר I a word dābār דִּבַּ֗רְתִּי spake dābar אֶת with ʾēt אַחַד֙ any ʾeḥād שִׁבְטֵ֣י of the tribes šēbeṭ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁ֣ר whom ʾăšer צִוִּ֗יתִי I commanded ṣāwâ לִרְע֛וֹת to feed rāʿâ אֶת ʾēt עַמִּ֥י my people ʿam אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar לָ֛מָּה Why mâ לֹֽא ye not lōʾ בְנִיתֶ֥ם build bānâ לִ֖י בֵּ֥ית me an house bayit אֲרָזִֽים׃ of cedar? ʾerez

וְ֠עַתָּה Now ʿattâ כֹּֽה therefore kō תֹאמַ֞ר so shalt thou say ʾāmar לְעַבְדִּ֣י unto my servant ʿebed לְדָוִ֗ד David, dāwid כֹּ֤ה Thus kō אָמַר֙ saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֔וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ אֲנִ֤י I ʾănî לְקַחְתִּ֙יךָ֙ took lāqaḥ מִן thee from min הַנָּוֶ֔ה the sheepcote, nāwe מֵֽאַחַ֖ר from following ʾaḥar הַצֹּ֑אן the sheep, ṣōn לִֽהְי֣וֹת to be hāyâ נָגִ֔יד ruler nāgîd עַל over ʿal עַמִּ֖י my people, ʿam עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel: yiśrāʾēl

וָאֶֽהְיֶ֣ה And I was hāyâ עִמְּךָ֗ with ʿim בְּכֹל֙ thee whithersoever kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer הָלַ֔כְתָּ thou wentest, hālak וָֽאַכְרִ֥תָה and have cut off kārat אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֹֽיְבֶ֖יךָ thine enemies ʾōyēb מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ out of thy sight, pānîm וְעָשִׂ֤תִֽי and have made ʿāśâ לְךָ֙ שֵׁ֣ם name, šēm גָּד֔וֹל thee a great gādôl כְּשֵׁ֥ם like unto the name šēm הַגְּדֹלִ֖ים of the great gādôl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ in the earth. ʾereṣ

וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י Moreover I will appoint śûm מָ֠קוֹם a place māqôm לְעַמִּ֨י for my people ʿam לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וּנְטַעְתִּיו֙ and will plant nāṭaʿ וְשָׁכַ֣ן them, that they may dwell šākan תַּחְתָּ֔יו in a place taḥat וְלֹ֥א no lōʾ יִרְגַּ֖ז of their own, and move rāgaz ע֑וֹד more; ʿôd וְלֹֽא neither lōʾ יֹסִ֤יפוּ them any more, yāsap בְנֵֽי shall the children bēn עַוְלָה֙ of wickedness ʿewel לְעַנּוֹת֔וֹ afflict ʿānâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר as ʾăšer בָּרִֽאשׁוֹנָֽה׃ beforetime, riʾšôn

וּלְמִן And as since min הַיּ֗וֹם the time yôm אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer צִוִּ֤יתִי I commanded ṣāwâ שֹֽׁפְטִים֙ judges šāpaṭ עַל over ʿal עַמִּ֣י my people ʿam יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽהֲנִיחֹ֥תִי and have caused thee to rest nûaḥ לְךָ֖ מִכָּל from all kōl אֹֽיְבֶ֑יךָ thine enemies. ʾōyēb וְהִגִּ֤יד telleth nāgad לְךָ֙ יְהוָ֔ה Also the Lord yĕhōwâ כִּי thee that kî בַ֖יִת thee an house. bayit יַֽעֲשֶׂה he will make ʿāśâ לְּךָ֥ יְהוָֽה׃ yĕhōwâ

כִּ֣י׀ And when kî יִמְלְא֣וּ be fulfilled, mālēʾ יָמֶ֗יךָ thy days yôm וְשָֽׁכַבְתָּ֙ and thou shalt sleep šākab אֶת with ʾēt אֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ thy fathers, ʾāb וַהֲקִֽימֹתִ֤י I will set up qûm אֶֽת ʾēt זַרְעֲךָ֙ thy seed zeraʿ אַֽחֲרֶ֔יךָ after ʾaḥar אֲשֶׁ֥ר thee, which ʾăšer יֵצֵ֖א shall proceed yāṣāʾ מִמֵּעֶ֑יךָ out of thy bowels, mēʿe וַהֲכִֽינֹתִ֖י and I will establish kûn אֶת ʾēt מַמְלַכְתּֽוֹ׃ his kingdom. mamlākâ

ה֥וּא He hûʾ יִבְנֶה shall build bānâ בַּ֖יִת an house bayit לִשְׁמִ֑י for my name, šēm וְכֹֽנַנְתִּ֛י and I will stablish kûn אֶת ʾēt כִּסֵּ֥א the throne kissēʾ מַמְלַכְתּ֖וֹ of his kingdom mamlākâ עַד for ʿad עוֹלָֽם׃ ever. ʿôlām

אֲנִי֙ I ʾănî אֶֽהְיֶה will be hāyâ לּ֣וֹ לְאָ֔ב his father, ʾāb וְה֖וּא and he hûʾ יִֽהְיֶה shall be hāyâ לִּ֣י לְבֵ֑ן my son. bēn אֲשֶׁר֙ If ʾăšer בְּהַ֣עֲוֹת֔וֹ he commit iniquity, ʿāwâ וְהֹֽכַחְתִּיו֙ I will chasten yākaḥ בְּשֵׁ֣בֶט him with the rod šēbeṭ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים of men, ʾîš וּבְנִגְעֵ֖י and with the stripes negaʿ בְּנֵ֥י of the children bēn אָדָֽם׃ of men: ʾādām

וְחַסְדִּ֖י But my mercy ḥēsēd לֹֽא shall not lōʾ יָס֣וּר depart away sûr מִמֶּ֑נּוּ from min כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר him, as ʾăšer הֲסִרֹ֙תִי֙ I took sûr מֵעִ֣ם from ʿim שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl אֲשֶׁ֥ר whom ʾăšer הֲסִרֹ֖תִי I put away sûr מִלְּפָנֶֽיךָ׃ before thee. pānîm

וְנֶאְמַ֨ן shall be established ʾāman בֵּֽיתְךָ֧ And thine house bayit וּמַֽמְלַכְתְּךָ֛ and thy kingdom mamlākâ עַד for ʿad עוֹלָ֖ם ever ʿôlām לְפָנֶ֑יךָ before pānîm כִּֽסְאֲךָ֔ thee: thy throne kissēʾ יִֽהְיֶ֥ה shall be hāyâ נָכ֖וֹן established kûn עַד for ʿad עוֹלָֽם׃ ever. ʿôlām

וַיָּבֹא֙ Then went bôʾ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek דָּוִ֔ד David dāwid וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב in, and sat yāšab לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and he said, ʾāmar מִ֣י Who mî אָֽנֹכִ֞י I, ʾānōkî אֲדֹנָ֤י O Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִה֙ God? yĕhōwi וּמִ֣י and what mî בֵיתִ֔י my house, bayit כִּ֥י that kî הֲבִֽאֹתַ֖נִי thou hast brought bôʾ עַד ʿad הֲלֹֽם׃ me hitherto? hălōm

וַתִּקְטַן֩ a small thing qāṭōn ע֨וֹד was yet ʿôd זֹ֤את And this zōt בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ in thy sight, ʿayin אֲדֹנָ֣י O Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֔ה God; yĕhōwâ וַתְּדַבֵּ֛ר but thou hast spoken dābar גַּ֥ם also gam אֶל of ʾēl בֵּֽית house bayit עַבְדְּךָ֖ thy servant's ʿebed לְמֵֽרָח֑וֹק for a great while to come. rāḥôq וְזֹ֛את And this zōt תּוֹרַ֥ת the manner tôrâ הָֽאָדָ֖ם of man, ʾādām אֲדֹנָ֥י O Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִֽה׃ God? yĕhōwâ

בַּֽעֲב֤וּר sake, ʿābûr דְּבָֽרְךָ֙ For thy word's dābār וּֽכְלִבְּךָ֔ and according to thine own heart, lēb עָשִׂ֕יתָ hast thou done ʿāśâ אֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַגְּדוּלָּ֖ה great things, gĕdûlâ הַזֹּ֑את these zōt לְהוֹדִ֖יעַ know yādaʿ אֶת to make ʾēt עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ thy servant ʿebed

עַל Wherefore ʿal כֵּ֥ן kēn גָּדַ֖לְתָּ thou art great, gādal יְהוָ֣ה God: yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהִ֑ים O Lord ʾĕlōhîm כִּֽי for kî אֵ֣ין none ʾayin כָּמ֗וֹךָ like thee, kĕmô וְאֵ֤ין neither ʾayin אֱלֹהִים֙ God ʾĕlōhîm זֽוּלָתֶ֔ךָ beside zûlâ בְּכֹ֥ל thee, according to all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ we have heard šāmaʿ בְּאָזְנֵֽינוּ׃ with our ears. ʾōzen

וּמִ֤י And what mî כְעַמְּךָ֙ like thy people, ʿam כְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל like Israel, yiśrāʾēl גּ֥וֹי nation gôy אֶחָ֖ד one ʾeḥād בָּאָ֑רֶץ in the earth ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֣ר whom ʾăšer הָלְכֽוּ went hālak אֱ֠לֹהִים God ʾĕlōhîm לִפְדּֽוֹת to redeem pādâ ל֨וֹ לְעָ֜ם for a people ʿam וְלָשׂ֧וּם to himself, and to make śûm ל֣וֹ שֵׁ֗ם him a name, šēm וְלַֽעֲשׂ֨וֹת and to do ʿāśâ לָכֶ֜ם הַגְּדוּלָּ֤ה for you great things gĕdûlâ וְנֹֽרָאוֹת֙ and terrible, yārēʾ לְאַרְצֶ֔ךָ for thy land, ʾereṣ מִפְּנֵ֣י before pānîm עַמְּךָ֗ thy people, ʿam אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer פָּדִ֤יתָ thou redeemedst pādâ לְּךָ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם to thee from Egypt, miṣrayim גּוֹיִ֖ם the nations gôy וֵֽאלֹהָֽיו׃ and their gods? ʾĕlōhîm

וַתְּכ֣וֹנֵֽן For thou hast confirmed kûn לְ֠ךָ אֶת to thyself ʾēt עַמְּךָ֙ thy people ʿam יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל׀ Israel yiśrāʾēl לְךָ֛ לְעָ֖ם a people ʿam עַד unto thee for ʿad עוֹלָ֑ם ever: ʿôlām וְאַתָּ֣ה and thou, ʾattâ יְהוָ֔ה Lord, yĕhōwâ הָיִ֥יתָ art become hāyâ לָהֶ֖ם לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃ their God. ʾĕlōhîm

וְעַתָּה֙ And now, ʿattâ יְהוָ֣ה O Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהִ֔ים God, ʾĕlōhîm הַדָּבָ֗ר the word dābār אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer דִּבַּ֤רְתָּ thou hast spoken dābar עַֽל concerning ʿal עַבְדְּךָ֙ thy servant, ʿebed וְעַל and concerning ʿal בֵּית֔וֹ his house, bayit הָקֵ֖ם establish qûm עַד for ʿad עוֹלָ֑ם ever, ʿôlām וַֽעֲשֵׂ֖ה and do ʿāśâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ thou hast said. dābar

וְיִגְדַּ֨ל be magnified gādal שִׁמְךָ֤ And let thy name šēm עַד for ʿad עוֹלָם֙ ever, ʿôlām לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar יְהוָ֣ה The Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֔וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ אֱלֹהִ֖ים the God ʾĕlōhîm עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl וּבֵית֙ and let the house bayit עַבְדְּךָ֣ of thy servant ʿebed דָוִ֔ד David dāwid יִֽהְיֶ֥ה be hāyâ נָכ֖וֹן established kûn לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃ before thee. pānîm

כִּֽי For kî אַתָּה֩ thou, ʾattâ יְהוָ֨ה O Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֜וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl גָּלִ֜יתָה hast revealed gālâ אֶת in ʾēt אֹ֤זֶן ʾōzen עַבְדְּךָ֙ to thy servant, ʿebed לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar בַּ֖יִת thee an house: bayit אֶבְנֶה I will build bānâ לָּ֑ךְ עַל therefore ʿal כֵּ֗ן kēn מָצָ֤א found māṣāʾ עַבְדְּךָ֙ hath thy servant ʿebed אֶת ʾēt לִבּ֔וֹ his heart lēb לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל to pray pālal אֵלֶ֔יךָ unto thee. ʾēl אֶת ʾēt הַתְּפִלָּ֖ה prayer tĕpillâ הַזֹּֽאת׃ this zōt

וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ And now, ʿattâ אֲדֹנָ֣י O Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֗ה God, yĕhōwi אַתָּה thou ʾattâ הוּא֙ that hûʾ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים God, ʾĕlōhîm וּדְבָרֶ֖יךָ and thy words dābār יִֽהְי֣וּ be hāyâ אֱמֶ֑ת true, ʾemet וַתְּדַבֵּר֙ and thou hast promised dābar אֶֽל unto ʾēl עַבְדְּךָ֔ thy servant: ʿebed אֶת ʾēt הַטּוֹבָ֖ה goodness ṭôb הַזֹּֽאת׃ this zōt

וְעַתָּ֗ה Therefore now ʿattâ הוֹאֵל֙ let it please yāʾal וּבָרֵךְ֙ thee to bless bārak אֶת ʾēt בֵּ֣ית the house bayit עַבְדְּךָ֔ of thy servant, ʿebed לִֽהְי֥וֹת that it may continue hāyâ לְעוֹלָ֖ם for ever ʿôlām לְפָנֶ֑יךָ before pānîm כִּֽי thee: for kî אַתָּ֞ה thou, ʾattâ אֲדֹנָ֤י O Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִה֙ God, yĕhōwi דִּבַּ֔רְתָּ hast spoken dābar וּמִבִּרְכָ֣תְךָ֔ and with thy blessing bĕrākâ יְבֹרַ֥ךְ be blessed bārak בֵּֽית let the house bayit עַבְדְּךָ֖ of thy servant ʿebed לְעוֹלָֽם׃ for ever. ʿôlām
