גַּם Also gam אֶתְמ֣וֹל in time past, ʾetmôl גַּם gam שִׁלְשׁ֗וֹם šilšôm בִּֽהְי֨וֹת was hāyâ שָׁא֥וּל when Saul šāʾûl מֶ֙לֶךְ֙ king melek עָלֵ֔ינוּ over ʿal אַתָּ֗ה us, thou ʾattâ הָיִ֛יתָה wast hāyâ מּוֹצִ֥יא he that leddest out yāṣāʾ וְהַמֵּבִ֖י and broughtest in bôʾ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֜ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ לְךָ֗ אַתָּ֨ה to thee, Thou ʾattâ תִרְעֶ֤ה shalt feed rāʿâ אֶת ʾēt עַמִּי֙ my people ʿam אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְאַתָּ֛ה and thou ʾattâ תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה shalt be hāyâ לְנָגִ֖יד a captain nāgîd עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ came bôʾ כָּל So all kōl זִקְנֵ֨י the elders zāqēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל to ʾēl הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek חֶבְר֔וֹנָה to Hebron; ḥebrôn וַיִּכְרֹ֣ת made kārat לָהֶם֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ and king melek דָּוִ֥ד David dāwid בְּרִ֛ית a league bĕrît בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן with them in Hebron ḥebrôn לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord: yĕhōwâ וַיִּמְשְׁח֧וּ and they anointed māšaḥ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֛ד David dāwid לְמֶ֖לֶךְ king melek עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

בֶּן old bēn שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים thirty šĕlôšîm שָׁנָ֛ה years šāne דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ when he began to reign, mālak אַרְבָּעִ֥ים forty ʾarbāʿîm שָׁנָ֖ה years. šāne מָלָֽךְ׃ he reigned mālak

בְּחֶבְרוֹן֙ In Hebron ḥebrôn מָלַ֣ךְ he reigned mālak עַל over ʿal יְהוּדָ֔ה Judah yĕhûdâ שֶׁ֥בַע seven šebaʿ שָׁנִ֖ים years šāne וְשִׁשָּׁ֣ה and six šēš חֳדָשִׁ֑ים months: ḥōdeš וּבִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֣ם and in Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim מָלַ֗ךְ he reigned mālak שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים thirty šĕlôšîm וְשָׁלֹשׁ֙ and three šālôš שָׁנָ֔ה years šāne עַ֥ל over ʿal כָּל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וִֽיהוּדָֽה׃ and Judah. yĕhûdâ

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ went hālak הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ And the king melek וַֽאֲנָשָׁיו֙ and his men ʾîš יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם to Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim אֶל unto ʾēl הַיְבֻסִ֖י the Jebusites, yĕbûsî יוֹשֵׁ֣ב the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֑רֶץ of the land: ʾereṣ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר which spake ʾāmar לְדָוִ֤ד unto David, dāwid לֵאמֹר֙ saying, ʾāmar לֹֽא thou shalt not lōʾ תָב֣וֹא come in bôʾ הֵ֔נָּה hither: hēnnâ כִּ֣י Except kî אִם ʾim הֱסִֽירְךָ֗ thou take away sûr הַֽעִוְרִ֤ים the blind ʿiwwēr וְהַפִּסְחִים֙ and the lame, pissēaḥ לֵאמֹ֔ר thinking, ʾāmar לֹֽא cannot lōʾ יָב֥וֹא come in bôʾ דָוִ֖ד David dāwid הֵֽנָּה׃ hither. hēnnâ

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד And David dāwid בַּיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַה֗וּא on that hûʾ כָּל Whosoever kōl מַכֵּ֤ה and smiteth nākâ יְבֻסִי֙ the Jebusites, yĕbûsî וְיִגַּ֣ע getteth up nāgaʿ בַּצִּנּ֔וֹר to the gutter, ṣinnûr וְאֶת ʾēt הַפִּסְחִים֙ and the lame pissēaḥ וְאֶת ʾēt הַ֣עִוְרִ֔ים and the blind, ʿiwwēr שְׂנֻאֵ֖ו hated śānēʾ נֶ֣פֶשׁ soul, nepeš דָּוִ֑ד of David's dāwid עַל Wherefore ʿal כֵּן֙ kēn יֹֽאמְר֔וּ they said, ʾāmar עִוֵּ֣ר The blind ʿiwwēr וּפִסֵּ֔חַ and the lame pissēaḥ לֹ֥א shall not lōʾ יָב֖וֹא come bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl הַבָּֽיִת׃ the house. bayit

וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב dwelt yāšab דָּוִד֙ So David dāwid בַּמְּצֻדָ֔ה in the fort, māṣûd וַיִּקְרָא and called qārāʾ לָ֖הּ עִ֣יר it the city ʿîr דָּוִ֑ד of David. dāwid וַיִּ֤בֶן built bānâ דָּוִד֙ And David dāwid סָבִ֔יב round about sābîb מִן from min הַמִּלּ֖וֹא Millo millôʾ וָבָֽיְתָה׃ and inward. bayit

וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח sent šālaḥ חִירָ֨ם And Hiram ḥîrām מֶֽלֶךְ king melek צֹ֥ר of Tyre ṣōr מַלְאָכִים֮ messengers mălʾok אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִד֒ David, dāwid וַֽעֲצֵ֣י trees, ʿēṣ אֲרָזִ֔ים and cedar ʾerez וְחָֽרָשֵׁ֣י and carpenters, ḥāroš עֵ֔ץ ʿēṣ וְחָֽרָשֵׁ֖י ḥāroš אֶ֣בֶן ʾeben קִ֑יר and masons: qîr וַיִּבְנוּ and they built bānâ בַ֖יִת an house. bayit לְדָוִֽד׃ David dāwid

וַיֵּ֣דַע perceived yādaʿ דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid כִּֽי that kî הֱכִינ֧וֹ had established kûn יְהוָ֛ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לְמֶ֖לֶךְ him king melek עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְכִי֙ and that kî נִשֵּׂ֣א he had exalted nāśāʾ מַמְלַכְתּ֔וֹ his kingdom mamlākâ בַּֽעֲב֖וּר sake. ʿābûr עַמּ֥וֹ for his people ʿam יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel's yiśrāʾēl

וַיִּקַּח֩ took lāqaḥ דָּוִ֨ד And David dāwid ע֜וֹד more ʿôd פִּֽלַגְשִׁ֤ים concubines pîlegeš וְנָשִׁים֙ and wives ʾiššâ מִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם out of Jerusalem, yĕrûšālaim אַֽחֲרֵ֖י after ʾaḥar בֹּא֣וֹ he was come bôʾ מֵֽחֶבְר֑וֹן from Hebron: ḥebrôn וַיִּוָּ֥לְדוּ born yālad ע֛וֹד and there were yet ʿôd לְדָוִ֖ד to David. dāwid בָּנִ֥ים sons bēn וּבָנֽוֹת׃ and daughters bat

וְאֵ֗לֶּה And these ʾēlle שְׁמ֛וֹת the names šēm הַיִּלֹּדִ֥ים of those that were born yillôd ל֖וֹ בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם unto him in Jerusalem; yĕrûšālaim שַׁמּ֣וּעַ Shammua, šammûaʿ וְשׁוֹבָ֔ב and Shobab, šôbāb וְנָתָ֖ן and Nathan, nātān וּשְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ and Solomon, šĕlōmō

וְיִבְחָ֥ר Ibhar yibḥar וֶֽאֱלִישׁ֖וּעַ also, and Elishua, ʾĕlîšûaʿ וְנֶ֥פֶג and Nepheg, nepeg וְיָפִֽיעַ׃ and Japhia, yāpîaʿ

וֶאֱלִֽישָׁמָ֥ע And Elishama, ʾĕlîšāmāʿ וְאֶלְיָדָ֖ע and Eliada, ʾelyādāʿ וֶֽאֱלִיפָֽלֶט׃ and Eliphalet. ʾĕlîpeleṭ

וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ heard šāmaʿ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים But when the Philistines pĕlištî כִּֽי that kî מָשְׁח֨וּ they had anointed māšaḥ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֤ד David dāwid לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ king melek עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽעֲל֥וּ came up ʿālâ כָל all kōl פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים the Philistines pĕlištî לְבַקֵּ֣שׁ to seek bāqaš אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֑ד David; dāwid וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע heard šāmaʿ דָּוִ֔ד and David dāwid וַיֵּ֖רֶד and went down yārad אֶל to ʾēl הַמְּצוּדָֽה׃ the hold. māṣûd

וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים The Philistines pĕlištî בָּ֑אוּ also came bôʾ וַיִּנָּֽטְשׁ֖וּ and spread themselves nāṭaš בְּעֵ֥מֶק in the valley ʿēmeq רְפָאִֽים׃ of Rephaim. rāpāʾ

וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל inquired šāʾal דָּוִ֤ד And David dāwid בַּֽיהוָה֙ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הַאֶֽעֱלֶה֙ Shall I go up ʿālâ אֶל to ʾēl פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines? pĕlištî הֲתִתְּנֵ֖ם wilt thou deliver nātan בְּיָדִ֑י them into mine hand? yād וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֤ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl דָּוִד֙ David, dāwid עֲלֵ֔ה Go up: ʿālâ כִּֽי for kî נָתֹ֥ן I will doubtless nātan אֶתֵּ֛ן deliver nātan אֶת ʾēt הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים the Philistines pĕlištî בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ into thine hand. yād

וַיָּבֹ֨א came bôʾ דָוִ֥ד And David dāwid בְּבַֽעַל פְּרָצִים֮ to Baal-perazim, baʿal pĕrāṣîm וַיַּכֵּ֣ם smote nākâ שָׁ֣ם them there, šām דָּוִד֒ and David dāwid וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and said, ʾāmar פָּרַ֨ץ hath broken forth upon pāraṣ יְהוָ֧ה The Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt אֹֽיְבַ֛י mine enemies ʾōyēb לְפָנַ֖י before pānîm כְּפֶ֣רֶץ me, as the breach pereṣ מָ֑יִם of waters. mayim עַל Therefore ʿal כֵּ֗ן kēn קָרָ֛א he called qārāʾ שֵֽׁם the name šēm הַמָּק֥וֹם place māqôm הַה֖וּא of that hûʾ בַּ֥עַל פְּרָצִֽים׃ Baal-perazim. baʿal pĕrāṣîm

וַיַּֽעַזְבוּ they left ʿāzab שָׁ֖ם And there šām אֶת ʾēt עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֑ם their images, ʿāṣāb וַיִּשָּׂאֵ֥ם burned them. nāśāʾ דָּוִ֖ד and David dāwid וַֽאֲנָשָֽׁיו׃ and his men ʾĕnôš

וַיֹּסִ֥פוּ again, yāsap ע֛וֹד yet ʿôd פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים And the Philistines pĕlištî לַֽעֲל֑וֹת came up ʿālâ וַיִּנָּֽטְשׁ֖וּ and spread themselves nāṭaš בְּעֵ֥מֶק in the valley ʿēmeq רְפָאִֽים׃ of Rephaim. rāpāʾ

וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל inquired šāʾal דָּוִד֙ And when David dāwid בַּֽיהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר he said, ʾāmar לֹ֣א Thou shalt not lōʾ תַֽעֲלֶ֑ה go up; ʿālâ הָסֵב֙ fetch a compass sābab אֶל ʾēl אַ֣חֲרֵיהֶ֔ם behind ʾaḥar וּבָ֥אתָ them, and come bôʾ לָהֶ֖ם מִמּ֥וּל upon them over against mûl בְּכָאִֽים׃ the mulberry trees. bākāʾ

וִ֠יהִי And let it be, hāyâ בְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֞ when thou hearest šāmaʿ אֶת ʾēt ק֧וֹל the sound qôl צְעָדָ֛ה of a going ṣĕʿādâ בְּרָאשֵׁ֥י in the tops rōš הַבְּכָאִ֖ים of the mulberry trees, bākāʾ אָ֣ז that then ʾāz תֶּֽחֱרָ֑ץ thou shalt bestir ḥāraṣ כִּ֣י thyself: for kî אָ֗ז then ʾāz יָצָ֤א go out yāṣāʾ יְהוָה֙ shall the Lord yĕhōwâ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ before pānîm לְהַכּ֖וֹת thee, to smite nākâ בְּמַֽחֲנֵ֥ה the host maḥăne פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ of the Philistines. pĕlištî

וַיַּ֤עַשׂ did so, ʿāśâ דָּוִד֙ And David dāwid כֵּ֔ן kēn כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer צִוָּ֖הוּ had commanded ṣāwâ יְהוָ֑ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיַּךְ֙ him; and smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines pĕlištî מִגֶּ֖בַע from Geba gebaʿ עַד ʿad בֹּֽאֲךָ֥ until thou come bôʾ גָֽזֶר׃ to Gazer. gezer
