וַיֹּ֙סֶף֙ And again yāsap אַף the anger ʾap יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ לַֽחֲר֖וֹת was kindled ḥārâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל against Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיָּ֨סֶת and he moved sût אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֤ד David dāwid בָּהֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר against them to say, ʾāmar לֵ֛ךְ Go, hālak מְנֵ֥ה number mānâ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וְאֶת ʾēt יְהוּדָֽה׃ and Judah. yĕhûdâ

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ For the king melek אֶל to ʾēl יוֹאָ֣ב׀ Joab yôʾāb שַׂר the captain śar הַחַ֣יִל of the host, ḥayil אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer אִתּ֗וֹ with ʾēt שֽׁוּט him, Go šûṭ נָ֞א now nāʾ בְּכָל through all kōl שִׁבְטֵ֤י the tribes šēbeṭ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl מִדָּן֙ from Dan dān וְעַד even to ʿad בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע Beer-sheba, bĕʾēr šebaʿ וּפִקְד֖וּ and number pāqad אֶת ye ʾēt הָעָ֑ם the people, ʿam וְיָ֣דַעְתִּ֔י that I may know yādaʿ אֵ֖ת ʾēt מִסְפַּ֥ר the number mispār הָעָֽם׃ of the people. ʿam

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יוֹאָ֜ב And Joab yôʾāb אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ the king, melek וְיוֹסֵ֣ף add yāsap יְהוָה֩ Now the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm אֶל unto ʾēl הָעָ֜ם the people, ʿam כָּהֵ֤ם׀ how many soever hēm וְכָהֵם֙ they be, hēm מֵאָ֣ה an hundredfold, mēʾâ פְעָמִ֔ים paʿam וְעֵינֵ֥י and that the eyes ʿayin אֲדֹנִֽי of my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek רֹא֑וֹת may see rāʾâ וַֽאדֹנִ֣י doth my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king melek לָ֥מָּה but why mâ חָפֵ֖ץ delight ḥāpēṣ בַּדָּבָ֥ר thing? dābār הַזֶּֽה׃ in this ze

וַיֶּֽחֱזַ֤ק prevailed ḥāzaq דְּבַר word dābār הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ Notwithstanding the king's melek אֶל against ʾēl יוֹאָ֔ב Joab, yôʾāb וְעַ֖ל and against ʿal שָׂרֵ֣י the captains śar הֶחָ֑יִל of the host. ḥayil וַיֵּצֵ֨א went out yāṣāʾ יוֹאָ֜ב And Joab yôʾāb וְשָׂרֵ֤י and the captains śar הַחַ֙יִל֙ of the host ḥayil לִפְנֵ֣י from the presence pānîm הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ of the king, melek לִפְקֹ֥ד to number pāqad אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיַּֽעַבְר֖וּ And they passed over ʿābar אֶת ʾēt הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן Jordan, yardēn וַיַּֽחֲנ֣וּ and pitched ḥānâ בַֽעֲרוֹעֵ֗ר in Aroer, ʿărôʿēr יְמִ֥ין on the right side yāmîn הָעִ֛יר of the city ʿîr אֲשֶׁ֛ר that ʾăšer בְּתוֹךְ in the midst tāwek הַנַּ֥חַל of the river naḥal הַגָּ֖ד of Gad, gād וְאֶל and toward ʾēl יַעְזֵֽר׃ Jazer: yaʿăzêr

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ Then they came bôʾ הַגִּלְעָ֔דָה to Gilead, gilʿād וְאֶל and to ʾēl אֶ֥רֶץ the land ʾereṣ תַּחְתִּ֖ים חָדְשִׁ֑י of Tahtim-hodshi; taḥtîm ḥodšî וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ and they came bôʾ דָּ֣נָה יַּ֔עַן to Dan-jaan, dān yaʿan וְסָבִ֖יב and about sābîb אֶל to ʾēl צִידֽוֹן׃ Zidon, ṣîdôn

וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ And came bôʾ מִבְצַר to the strong hold mibṣār צֹ֔ר of Tyre, ṣōr וְכָל and to all kōl עָרֵ֥י the cities ʿîr הַֽחִוִּ֖י of the Hivites, ḥiwwî וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י and of the Canaanites: kĕnaʿanî וַיֵּֽצְא֛וּ and they went out yāṣāʾ אֶל to ʾēl נֶ֥גֶב the south negeb יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃ to Beer-sheba. bĕʾēr šebaʿ

וַיָּשֻׁ֖טוּ So when they had gone šûṭ בְּכָל through all kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ they came bôʾ מִקְצֵ֨ה at the end qāṣe תִשְׁעָ֧ה of nine tēšaʿ חֳדָשִׁ֛ים months ḥōdeš וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים and twenty ʿeśrîm י֖וֹם days. yôm יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ to Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim

וַיִּתֵּ֥ן gave up nātan יוֹאָ֛ב And Joab yôʾāb אֶת ʾēt מִסְפַּ֥ר the sum mispār מִפְקַד of the number mipqād הָעָ֖ם of the people ʿam אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king: melek וַתְּהִ֣י and there were hāyâ יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל in Israel yiśrāʾēl שְֽׁמֹנֶה֩ eight šĕmōne מֵא֨וֹת hundred mēʾâ אֶ֤לֶף thousand ʾelep אִֽישׁ men ʾîš חַ֙יִל֙ valiant ḥayil שֹׁ֣לֵֽף that drew šālap חֶ֔רֶב the sword; ḥereb וְאִ֣ישׁ and the men ʾîš יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah yĕhûdâ חֲמֵשׁ five ḥāmēš מֵא֥וֹת hundred mēʾâ אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep אִֽישׁ׃ men. ʾîš

וַיַּ֤ךְ smote nākâ לֵב heart lēb דָּוִד֙ And David's dāwid אֹת֔וֹ ʾēt אַֽחֲרֵי him after ʾaḥar כֵ֖ן that kēn סָפַ֣ר he had numbered sāpar אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֑ם the people. ʿam וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ חָטָ֤אתִי I have sinned ḥāṭāʾ מְאֹד֙ greatly mĕʾōd אֲשֶׁ֣ר in that ʾăšer עָשִׂ֔יתִי I have done: ʿāśâ וְעַתָּ֣ה and now, ʿattâ יְהוָ֔ה O Lord, yĕhōwâ הַֽעֲבֶר take away ʿābar נָא֙ I beseech thee, nāʾ אֶת ʾēt עֲוֹ֣ן the iniquity ʿāwōn עַבְדְּךָ֔ of thy servant; ʿebed כִּ֥י for kî נִסְכַּ֖לְתִּי foolishly. sākal מְאֹֽד׃ I have done very mĕʾōd

וַיָּ֥קָם was up qûm דָּוִ֖ד For when David dāwid בַּבֹּ֑קֶר in the morning, bōqer וּדְבַר the word dābār יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ הָיָה֙ came hāyâ אֶל unto ʾēl גָּ֣ד Gad, gād הַנָּבִ֔יא the prophet nābîʾ חֹזֵ֥ה seer, ḥōze דָוִ֖ד David's dāwid לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

הָל֞וֹךְ Go hālak וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ saith dābar אֶל unto ʾēl דָּוִ֗ד David, dāwid כֹּ֚ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר and say ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ שָׁלֹ֕שׁ thee three šālôš אָֽנֹכִ֖י I ʾānōkî נוֹטֵ֣ל offer nāṭal עָלֶ֑יךָ ʿal בְּחַר choose bāḥar לְךָ֥ אַֽחַת thee one ʾeḥād מֵהֶ֖ם of them, hēm וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה that I may do it unto thee. ʿāśâ לָּֽךְ׃

וַיָּֽבֹא came bôʾ גָ֥ד So Gad gād אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִ֖ד David, dāwid וַיַּגֶּד and told nāgad ל֑וֹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר him, and said ʾāmar ל֡וֹ הֲתָב֣וֹא come bôʾ לְךָ֣ שֶֽׁבַע unto him, Shall seven šebaʿ שָׁנִ֣ים׀ years šāne רָעָ֣ב׀ of famine rāʿāb בְּאַרְצֶ֡ךָ unto thee in thy land? ʾereṣ אִם or ʾim שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה three šālôš חֳ֠דָשִׁים months ḥōdeš נֻֽסְךָ֙ wilt thou flee nûs לִפְנֵֽי before pānîm צָרֶ֜יךָ thine enemies, ṣar וְה֣וּא while they hûʾ רֹֽדְפֶ֗ךָ pursue rādap וְאִם thee? or ʾim הֱ֠יוֹת that there be hāyâ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת three šālôš יָמִ֥ים days' yôm דֶּ֙בֶר֙ pestilence deber בְּאַרְצֶ֔ךָ in thy land? ʾereṣ עַתָּה֙ now ʿattâ דַּ֣ע advise, yādaʿ וּרְאֵ֔ה and see rāʾâ מָה what mâ אָשִׁ֥יב I shall return šûb שֹֽׁלְחִ֖י to him that sent me. šālaḥ דָּבָֽר׃ answer dābār

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֛ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl גָּ֖ד Gad, gād צַר strait: ṣar לִ֣י מְאֹ֑ד I am in a great mĕʾōd נִפְּלָה let us fall nāpal נָּ֤א now nāʾ בְיַד into the hand yād יְהוָה֙ of the Lord; yĕhōwâ כִּֽי for kî רַבִּ֣ים great: rab רַֽחֲמָ֔ו his mercies raḥam וּבְיַד into the hand yād אָדָ֖ם of man. ʾādām אַל and let me not ʾal אֶפֹּֽלָה׃ fall nāpal

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן sent nātan יְהוָ֥ה So the Lord yĕhōwâ דֶּ֙בֶר֙ a pestilence deber בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל upon Israel yiśrāʾēl מֵֽהַבֹּ֖קֶר from the morning bōqer וְעַד even to ʿad עֵ֣ת the time ʿēt מוֹעֵ֑ד appointed: môʿēd וַיָּ֣מָת and there died mût מִן of min הָעָ֗ם the people ʿam מִדָּן֙ from Dan dān וְעַד even to ʿad בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע Beer-sheba bĕʾēr šebaʿ שִׁבְעִ֥ים seventy šibʿîm אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep אִֽישׁ׃ men. ʾîš

וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ stretched out šālaḥ יָד֨וֹ his hand yād הַמַּלְאָ֥ךְ׀ And when the angel mălʾok יְֽרוּשָׁלִַם֮ upon Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim לְשַֽׁחֲתָהּ֒ to destroy šāḥat וַיִּנָּ֤חֶם repented him nāḥam יְהוָה֙ it, the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל of ʾēl הָ֣רָעָ֔ה the evil, raʿ וַ֠יֹּאמֶר and said ʾāmar לַמַּלְאָ֞ךְ to the angel mălʾok הַמַּשְׁחִ֤ית that destroyed šāḥat בָּעָם֙ the people, ʿam רַ֔ב It is enough: rab עַתָּ֖ה now ʿattâ הֶ֣רֶף stay rāpâ יָדֶ֑ךָ thine hand. yād וּמַלְאַ֤ךְ And the angel mălʾok יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ הָיָ֔ה was hāyâ עִם by ʿim גֹּ֖רֶן the threshingplace gōren הָֽאֲוַ֥רְנָה of Araunah ʾărawnâ הַיְבֻסִֽי׃ the Jebusite. yĕbûsî

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ spake ʾāmar דָּוִ֨ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ בִּרְאֹת֣וֹ׀ when he saw rāʾâ אֶֽת ʾēt הַמַּלְאָ֣ךְ׀ the angel mălʾok הַמַּכֶּ֣ה that smote nākâ בָעָ֗ם the people, ʿam וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֨ה Lo, hinnē אָֽנֹכִ֤י I ʾānōkî חָטָ֙אתִי֙ have sinned, ḥāṭāʾ וְאָֽנֹכִ֣י and I ʾānōkî הֶֽעֱוֵ֔יתִי have done wickedly: ʿāwâ וְאֵ֥לֶּה but these ʾēlle הַצֹּ֖אן sheep, ṣōn מֶ֣ה what mâ עָשׂ֑וּ have they done? ʿāśâ תְּהִ֨י be hāyâ נָ֥א I pray thee, nāʾ יָֽדְךָ֛ let thine hand, yād בִּ֖י וּבְבֵ֥ית house. bayit אָבִֽי׃ against me, and against my father's ʾāb

וַיָּֽבֹא came bôʾ גָ֥ד And Gad gād אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִ֖ד David, dāwid בַּיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַה֑וּא that hûʾ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ עֲלֵה֙ unto him, Go up, ʿālâ הָקֵ֤ם rear qûm לַֽיהוָה֙ unto the Lord yĕhōwâ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ an altar mizbēaḥ בְּגֹ֖רֶן in the threshingfloor gōren אֲרַ֥נְיָה of Araunah ʾărawnâ הַיְבֻסִֽי׃ the Jebusite. yĕbûsî

וַיַּ֤עַל went up ʿālâ דָּוִד֙ And David, dāwid כִּדְבַר according to the saying dābār גָּ֔ד of Gad, gād כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר as ʾăšer צִוָּ֥ה commanded. ṣāwâ יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיַּשְׁקֵ֣ף looked, šāqap אֲרַ֗וְנָה And Araunah ʾărawnâ וַיַּ֤רְא and saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek וְאֶת ʾēt עֲבָדָ֔יו and his servants ʿebed עֹֽבְרִ֖ים coming on ʿābar עָלָ֑יו toward ʿal וַיֵּצֵ֣א went out, yāṣāʾ אֲרַ֔וְנָה him: and Araunah ʾărawnâ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֧חוּ and bowed himself šāḥâ לַמֶּ֛לֶךְ before the king melek אַפָּ֖יו on his face ʾap אָֽרְצָה׃ upon the ground. ʾereṣ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar אֲרַ֔וְנָה And Araunah ʾărawnâ מַדּ֛וּעַ Wherefore maddûaʿ בָּ֥א come bôʾ אֲדֹנִֽי is my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek אֶל to ʾēl עַבְדּ֑וֹ his servant? ʿebed וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said, ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד And David dāwid לִקְנ֧וֹת To buy qānâ מֵֽעִמְּךָ֣ of ʿim אֶת ʾēt הַגֹּ֗רֶן the threshingfloor gōren לִבְנ֤וֹת thee, to build bānâ מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֔ה unto the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְתֵֽעָצַ֥ר may be stayed ʿāṣār הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה that the plague maggēpâ מֵעַ֥ל from ʿal הָעָֽם׃ the people. ʿam

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲרַ֙וְנָה֙ And Araunah ʾărawnâ אֶל unto ʾēl דָּוִ֔ד David, dāwid יִקַּ֥ח take lāqaḥ וְיַ֛עַל and offer up ʿālâ אֲדֹנִ֥י Let my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek הַטּ֣וֹב what good ṭôb בְּעֵינָ֑ו unto him: ʿayin רְאֵה֙ behold, rāʾâ הַבָּקָ֣ר oxen bāqār לָֽעֹלָ֔ה for burnt sacrifice, ʿōlâ וְהַמֹּֽרִגִּ֛ים and threshing instruments môrag וּכְלֵ֥י and instruments kĕlî הַבָּקָ֖ר of the oxen bāqār לָֽעֵצִֽים׃ for wood. ʿēṣ

הַכֹּ֗ל All kōl נָתַ֛ן give nātan אֲרַ֥וְנָה these did Araunah, ʾărawnâ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ a king, melek לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king. melek וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲרַ֙וְנָה֙ And Araunah ʾărawnâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ unto the king, melek יְהוָ֥ה The Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm יִרְצֶֽךָ׃ accept thee. rāṣâ

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ And the king melek אֶל unto ʾēl אֲרַ֗וְנָה Araunah, ʾărawnâ לֹ֤א Nay; lōʾ כִּֽי but kî קָנ֨וֹ I will surely qānâ אֶקְנֶ֤ה buy qānâ מֵאֽוֹתְךָ֙ of ʾēt בִּמְחִ֔יר thee at a price: mĕḥîr וְלֹ֧א neither lōʾ אַֽעֲלֶ֛ה will I offer ʿālâ לַֽיהוָ֥ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהַ֖י my God ʾĕlōhîm עֹל֣וֹת burnt offerings ʿōlâ חִנָּ֑ם of that which doth cost me nothing. ḥinnām וַיִּ֨קֶן bought qānâ דָּוִ֤ד So David dāwid אֶת ʾēt הַגֹּ֙רֶן֙ the threshingfloor gōren וְאֶת ʾēt הַבָּקָ֔ר and the oxen bāqār בְּכֶ֖סֶף of silver. kesep שְׁקָלִ֥ים shekels šeqel חֲמִשִּֽׁים׃ for fifty ḥămiššîm

וַיִּבֶן֩ built bānâ שָׁ֨ם there šām דָּוִ֤ד And David dāwid מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֔ה unto the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיַּ֥עַל and offered ʿālâ עֹל֖וֹת burnt offerings ʿōlâ וּשְׁלָמִ֑ים and peace offerings. šelem וַיֵּֽעָתֵ֤ר was intreated ʿātar יְהוָה֙ So the Lord yĕhōwâ לָאָ֔רֶץ for the land, ʾereṣ וַתֵּֽעָצַ֥ר was stayed ʿāṣār הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה and the plague maggēpâ מֵעַ֥ל from ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl
