  1. וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ אַֽחֲרֵי after this, ʾaḥar כֵ֔ן kēn וַיָּ֕מָת died, mût מֶ֖לֶךְ that the king melek בְּנֵ֣י of the children bēn עַמּ֑וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ reigned mālak חָנ֥וּן and Hanun ḥānûn בְּנ֖וֹ his son bēn תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ in his stead. taḥat
  2. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר Then said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד David, dāwid אֶֽעֱשֶׂה I will shew ʿāśâ חֶ֣סֶד׀ kindness ḥēsēd עִם unto ʿim חָנ֣וּן Hanun ḥānûn בֶּן the son bēn נָחָ֗שׁ of Nahash, nāḥoš כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֩ as ʾăšer עָשָׂ֨ה shewed ʿāśâ אָבִ֤יו his father ʾāb עִמָּדִי֙ unto me. ʿimmād חֶ֔סֶד kindness ḥēsēd וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ דָּוִ֧ד And David dāwid לְנַֽחֲמ֛וֹ to comfort nāḥam בְּיַד him by the hand yād עֲבָדָ֖יו of his servants ʿebed אֶל for ʾēl אָבִ֑יו his father. ʾāb וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ came bôʾ עַבְדֵ֣י servants ʿebed דָוִ֔ד And David's dāwid אֶ֖רֶץ into the land ʾereṣ בְּנֵ֥י of the children bēn עַמּֽוֹן׃ of Ammon. ʿammôn
  3. וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֩ said ʾāmar שָׂרֵ֨י And the princes śar בְנֵֽי of the children bēn עַמּ֜וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn אֶל unto ʾēl חָנ֣וּן Hanun ḥānûn אֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֗ם their lord, ʾādôn הַֽמְכַבֵּ֨ד doth honour kābad דָּוִ֤ד thou that David dāwid אֶת ʾēt אָבִ֙יךָ֙ thy father, ʾāb בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ Thinkest ʿayin כִּֽי that שָׁלַ֥ח he hath sent šālaḥ לְךָ֖ מְנַֽחֲמִ֑ים comforters nāḥam הֲ֠לוֹא unto thee? hath not lōʾ בַּֽעֲב֞וּר thee, to ʿābûr חֲקֹ֤ר search ḥāqar אֶת ʾēt הָעִיר֙ the city, ʿîr וּלְרַגְּלָ֣הּ and to spy it out, rāgal וּלְהָפְכָ֔הּ and to overthrow it? hāpak שָׁלַ֥ח sent šālaḥ דָּוִ֛ד David dāwid אֶת ʾēt עֲבָדָ֖יו his servants ʿebed אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ unto ʾēl
  4. וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ חָנ֜וּן Wherefore Hanun ḥānûn אֶת ʾēt עַבְדֵ֣י servants, ʿebed דָוִ֗ד David's dāwid וַיְגַלַּח֙ and shaved off gālaḥ אֶת the ʾēt חֲצִ֣י one half ḥēṣî זְקָנָ֔ם of their beards, zāqān וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת and cut off kārat אֶת ʾēt מַדְוֵיהֶ֛ם their garments medew בַּחֵ֖צִי in the middle, ḥēṣî עַ֣ד to ʿad שְׁתֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם their buttocks, šētâ וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃ and sent them away. šālaḥ
  5. וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ When they told nāgad לְדָוִד֙ unto David, dāwid וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח he sent šālaḥ לִקְרָאתָ֔ם to meet qirʾâ כִּֽי them, because הָי֥וּ were hāyâ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים the men ʾĕnôš נִכְלָמִ֣ים ashamed: kālam מְאֹ֑ד greatly mĕʾōd וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ and the king melek שְׁב֣וּ Tarry yāšab בִֽירֵח֔וֹ at Jericho yĕrîḥô עַד until ʿad יְצַמַּ֥ח be grown, ṣāmaḥ זְקַנְכֶ֖ם your beards zāqān וְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ and return. šûb
  6. וַיִּרְאוּ֙ saw rāʾâ בְּנֵ֣י And when the children bēn עַמּ֔וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn כִּ֥י that נִבְאֲשׁ֖וּ they stank bāʾaš בְּדָוִ֑ד before David, dāwid וַיִּשְׁלְח֣וּ sent šālaḥ בְנֵֽי the children bēn עַמּ֡וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn וַיִּשְׂכְּרוּ֩ and hired śākar אֶת ʾēt אֲרַ֨ם the Syrians ʾărām בֵּית רְח֜וֹב of Beth-rehob, bêt rĕḥôb וְאֶת ʾēt אֲרַ֣ם and the Syrians ʾărām צוֹבָ֗א of Zoba, ṣôbāʾ עֶשְׂרִ֥ים twenty ʿeśrîm אֶ֙לֶף֙ thousand ʾelep רַגְלִ֔י footmen, raglî וְאֶת ʾēt מֶ֤לֶךְ and of king melek מַֽעֲכָה֙ Maacah maʿăkâ אֶ֣לֶף a thousand ʾelep אִ֔ישׁ men, ʾîš וְאִ֣ישׁ ʾîš ט֔וֹב ṭôb שְׁנֵים and of Ish-tob šĕnayim עָשָׂ֥ר twelve ʿāśār אֶ֖לֶף men. ʾîš אִֽישׁ׃ thousand ʾelep
  7. וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע heard šāmaʿ דָּוִ֑ד And when David dāwid וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ of he sent šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt יוֹאָ֔ב Joab, yôʾāb וְאֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל and all kōl הַצָּבָ֖א the host ṣābāʾ הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ of the mighty men. gibbôr
  8. וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙ came out, yāṣāʾ בְּנֵ֣י And the children bēn עַמּ֔וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn וַיַּֽעַרְכ֥וּ in array ʿārak מִלְחָמָ֖ה and put the battle milḥāmâ פֶּ֣תַח at the entering in petaḥ הַשָּׁ֑עַר of the gate: šaʿar וַֽאֲרַ֨ם and the Syrians ʾărām צוֹבָ֤א of Zoba, ṣôbāʾ וּרְחוֹב֙ and of Rehob, rĕḥōb וְאִֽישׁ ʾîš ט֣וֹב and Ish-tob, ṭôb וּמַֽעֲכָ֔ה and Maacah, maʿăkâ לְבַדָּ֖ם by themselves bad בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ in the field. śāde
  9. וַיַּ֣רְא saw rāʾâ יוֹאָ֗ב When Joab yôʾāb כִּֽי that הָיְתָ֤ה was hāyâ אֵלָיו֙ against ʾēl פְּנֵ֣י the front pānîm הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה of the battle milḥāmâ מִפָּנִ֖ים him before pānîm וּמֵֽאָח֑וֹר and behind, ʾāḥôr וַיִּבְחַ֗ר he chose bāḥar מִכֹּל֙ of all kōl בְּחוּרֵ֣י the choice bāḥar בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ and put in array ʿārak לִקְרַ֥את against qirʾâ אֲרָֽם׃ the Syrians: ʾărām
  10. וְאֵת֙ ʾēt יֶ֣תֶר And the rest yeter הָעָ֔ם of the people ʿam נָתַ֕ן he delivered nātan בְּיַ֖ד into the hand yād אַבְשַׁ֣י of Abishai ʾăbîšay אָחִ֑יו his brother, ʾāḥ וַיַּֽעֲרֹ֕ךְ that he might put in array ʿārak לִקְרַ֖את against qirʾâ בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn עַמּֽוֹן׃ of Ammon. ʿammôn
  11. וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אִם If ʾim תֶּֽחֱזַ֤ק be too strong ḥāzaq אֲרָם֙ the Syrians ʾărām מִמֶּ֔נִּי for min וְהָיִ֥תָה me, then thou shalt hāyâ לִּ֖י לִֽישׁוּעָ֑ה help yĕšûʿâ וְאִם me: but if ʾim בְּנֵ֤י the children bēn עַמּוֹן֙ of Ammon ʿammôn יֶחֱזְק֣וּ be too strong ḥāzaq מִמְּךָ֔ for min וְהָֽלַכְתִּ֖י thee, then I will come hālak לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַֽ and help thee. yāšaʿ לָֽךְ׃
  12. חֲזַ֤ק Be of good courage, ḥāzaq וְנִתְחַזַּק֙ and let us play the men ḥāzaq בְּעַד for bĕʿad עַמֵּ֔נוּ our people, ʿam וּבְעַ֖ד and for bĕʿad עָרֵ֣י the cities ʿîr אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ of our God: ʾĕlōhîm וַֽיהוָ֔ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ יַֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה do ʿāśâ הַטּ֖וֹב him good. ṭôb בְּעֵינָֽיו׃ that which seemeth ʿayin
  13. וַיִּגַּ֣שׁ drew nigh, nāgaš יוֹאָ֗ב And Joab yôʾāb וְהָעָם֙ and the people ʿam אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עִמּ֔וֹ with ʿim לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה him, unto the battle milḥāmâ בַּֽאֲרָ֑ם against the Syrians: ʾărām וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ and they fled nûs מִפָּנָֽיו׃ before him. pānîm
  14. וּבְנֵ֨י And when the children bēn עַמּ֤וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn רָאוּ֙ saw rāʾâ כִּי that נָ֣ס were fled, nûs אֲרָ֔ם the Syrians ʾărām וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙ then fled nûs מִפְּנֵ֣י they also before pānîm אֲבִישַׁ֔י Abishai, ʾăbîšay וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ and entered bôʾ הָעִ֑יר into the city. ʿîr וַיָּ֣שָׁב returned šûb יוֹאָ֗ב So Joab yôʾāb מֵעַל֙ from ʿal בְּנֵ֣י the children bēn עַמּ֔וֹן of Ammon, ʿammôn וַיָּבֹ֖א and came bôʾ יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ to Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim
  15. וַיַּ֣רְא saw rāʾâ אֲרָ֔ם And when the Syrians ʾărām כִּ֥י that נִגַּ֖ף they were smitten nāgap לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֵּאָֽסְפ֖וּ they gathered themselves ʾāsap יָֽחַד׃ together. yaḥad
  16. וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח sent, šālaḥ הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר And Hadarezer hădarʿezer וַיֹּצֵ֤א and brought out yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt אֲרָם֙ the Syrians ʾărām אֲשֶׁר֙ that ʾăšer מֵעֵ֣בֶר beyond ʿēber הַנָּהָ֔ר the river: nāhār וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ and they came bôʾ חֵילָ֑ם to Helam; ḥêlām וְשׁוֹבַ֛ךְ and Shobach šôbok שַׂר the captain śar צְבָ֥א of the host ṣābāʾ הֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר of Hadarezer hădarʿezer לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ before them. pānîm
  17. וַיֻּגַּ֣ד And when it was told nāgad לְדָוִ֗ד David, dāwid וַיֶּֽאֱסֹ֤ף he gathered together, ʾāsap אֶת ʾēt כָּל kōl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ all Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽעֲבֹ֣ר and passed over ʿābar אֶת ʾēt הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן Jordan, yardēn וַיָּבֹ֖א and came bôʾ חֵלָ֑אמָה to Helam. ḥêlām וַיַּֽעַרְכ֤וּ set themselves in array ʿārak אֲרָם֙ And the Syrians ʾărām לִקְרַ֣את against qirʾâ דָּוִ֔ד David, dāwid וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ and fought lāḥam עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him. ʿim
  18. וַיָּ֣נָס fled nûs אֲרָם֮ And the Syrians ʾărām מִפְּנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽהֲרֹ֨ג slew hārag דָּוִ֜ד and David dāwid מֵֽאֲרָ֗ם of the Syrians, ʾărām שְׁבַ֤ע seven šebaʿ מֵאוֹת֙ hundred mēʾâ רֶ֔כֶב chariots rekeb וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים and forty ʾarbāʿîm אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep פָּֽרָשִׁ֑ים horsemen, pāroš וְאֵ֨ת ʾēt שׁוֹבַ֧ךְ Shobach šôbok שַׂר the captain śar צְבָא֛וֹ of their host, ṣābāʾ הִכָּ֖ה and smote nākâ וַיָּ֥מָת who died mût שָֽׁם׃ there. šām
  19. וַיִּרְא֨וּ saw rāʾâ כָֽל And when all kōl הַמְּלָכִ֜ים the kings melek עַבְדֵ֣י servants ʿebed הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר to Hadarezer hădarʿezer כִּ֤י that נִגְּפוּ֙ they were smitten nāgap לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּשְׁלִ֥מוּ they made peace šālam אֶת with ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽעַבְד֑וּם and served ʿābad וַיִּֽרְא֣וּ feared yārēʾ אֲרָ֔ם them. So the Syrians ʾărām לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ to help yāšaʿ ע֖וֹד any more. ʿôd אֶת ʾēt בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn עַמּֽוֹן׃ of Ammon ʿammôn
