וִֽיהוֹרָ֣ם Now Jehoram yĕhôrām בֶּן the son bēn אַחְאָ֗ב of Ahab ʾaḥʾāb מָלַ֤ךְ began to reign mālak עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Israel yiśrāʾēl בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן in Samaria šōmĕrôn בִּשְׁנַת֙ year šāne שְׁמֹנֶ֣ה the eighteenth šĕmōne עֶשְׂרֵ֔ה ʿāśār לִיהֽוֹשָׁפָ֖ט of Jehoshaphat yĕhôšāpāṭ מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek יְהוּדָ֑ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ and reigned mālak שְׁתֵּים twelve šĕnayim עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה ʿāśār שָׁנָֽה׃ years. šāne

וַיַּֽעֲשֶׂ֤ה And he wrought ʿāśâ הָרַע֙ evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord; yĕhōwâ רַ֕ק but raq לֹ֥א not lōʾ כְאָבִ֖יו like his father, ʾāb וּכְאִמּ֑וֹ and like his mother: ʾēm וַיָּ֙סַר֙ for he put away sûr אֶת ʾēt מַצְּבַ֣ת the image maṣṣēbâ הַבַּ֔עַל of Baal baʿal אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה had made. ʿāśâ אָבִֽיו׃ his father ʾāb

רַ֠ק Nevertheless raq בְּחַטֹּ֞אות unto the sins ḥaṭṭāʾâ יָֽרָבְעָ֧ם of Jeroboam yorobʿām בֶּֽן the son bēn נְבָ֛ט of Nebat, nĕbāṭ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer הֶֽחֱטִ֥יא to sin; ḥāṭāʾ אֶת made ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl דָּבֵ֑ק he cleaved dābaq לֹא not lōʾ סָ֖ר he departed sûr מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ therefrom. min

וּמֵישַׁ֥ע And Mesha mêšaʿ מֶֽלֶךְ king melek מוֹאָ֖ב of Moab môʾāb הָיָ֣ה was hāyâ נֹקֵ֑ד a sheepmaster, nōqēd וְהֵשִׁ֤יב and rendered šûb לְמֶֽלֶךְ unto the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl מֵֽאָה an hundred mēʾâ אֶ֣לֶף thousand ʾelep כָּרִ֔ים lambs, kar וּמֵ֥אָה and an hundred mēʾâ אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep אֵילִ֥ים rams, ʾayil צָֽמֶר׃ with the wool. ṣemer

וַיְהִ֖י But it came to pass, hāyâ כְּמ֣וֹת was dead, māwet אַחְאָ֑ב when Ahab ʾaḥʾāb וַיִּפְשַׁ֥ע rebelled pāšaʿ מֶֽלֶךְ that the king melek מוֹאָ֖ב of Moab môʾāb בְּמֶ֥לֶךְ against the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיֵּצֵ֞א went out yāṣāʾ הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ And king melek יְהוֹרָ֛ם Jehoram yĕhôrām בַּיּ֥וֹם time, yôm הַה֖וּא the same hûʾ מִשֹּֽׁמְר֑וֹן of Samaria šōmĕrôn וַיִּפְקֹ֖ד and numbered pāqad אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיֵּ֡לֶךְ And he went hālak וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ and sent šālaḥ אֶל to ʾēl יְהֽוֹשָׁפָ֨ט Jehoshaphat yĕhôšāpāṭ מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek יְהוּדָ֜ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ לֵאמֹ֗ר saying, ʾāmar מֶ֤לֶךְ The king melek מוֹאָב֙ of Moab môʾāb פָּשַׁ֣ע hath rebelled pāšaʿ בִּ֔י הֲתֵלֵ֥ךְ against me: wilt thou go hālak אִתִּ֛י with ʾēt אֶל me against ʾēl מוֹאָ֖ב Moab môʾāb לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה to battle? milḥāmâ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אֶֽעֱלֶ֔ה I will go up: ʿālâ כָּמ֧וֹנִי kĕmô כָמ֛וֹךָ kĕmô כְּעַמִּ֥י I as thou my people ʿam כְעַמֶּ֖ךָ as thy people, ʿam כְּסוּסַ֥י my horses sûs כְּסוּסֶֽיךָ׃ as thy horses. sûs

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אֵי Which ʾay זֶ֥ה ze הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ way derek נַֽעֲלֶ֑ה shall we go up? ʿālâ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he answered, ʾāmar דֶּ֖רֶךְ The way derek מִדְבַּ֥ר through the wilderness midbār אֱדֽוֹם׃ of Edom. ʾĕdōm

וַיֵּלֶךְ֩ went, hālak מֶ֨לֶךְ So the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וּמֶֽלֶך and the king melek יְהוּדָה֙ of Judah, yĕhûdâ וּמֶ֣לֶךְ and the king melek אֱד֔וֹם of Edom: ʾĕdōm וַיָּסֹ֕בּוּ and they fetched a compass sābab דֶּ֖רֶךְ journey: derek שִׁבְעַ֣ת of seven šebaʿ יָמִ֑ים days' yôm וְלֹֽא no lōʾ הָיָ֨ה and there was hāyâ מַ֧יִם water mayim לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֛ה for the host, maḥăne וְלַבְּהֵמָ֖ה and for the cattle bĕhēmâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer בְּרַגְלֵיהֶֽם׃ followed them. regel

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר said, ʾāmar מֶ֣לֶךְ And the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֲהָ֕הּ Alas! ʾăhāh כִּֽי that kî קָרָ֣א hath called together, qārāʾ יְהוָ֗ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לִשְׁלֹ֙שֶׁת֙ three šālôš הַמְּלָכִ֣ים kings melek הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle לָתֵ֥ת to deliver nātan אוֹתָ֖ם ʾēt בְּיַד them into the hand yād מוֹאָֽב׃ of Moab! môʾāb

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar יְהֽוֹשָׁפָ֗ט But Jehoshaphat yĕhôšāpāṭ הַאֵ֨ין not ʾayin פֹּ֤ה here pō נָבִיא֙ a prophet nābîʾ לַֽיהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְנִדְרְשָׁ֥ה that we may inquire dāraš אֶת of ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ מֵֽאוֹת֑וֹ by ʾēt וַ֠יַּעַן answered ʿānâ אֶחָ֞ד him? And one ʾeḥād מֵֽעַבְדֵ֤י servants ʿebed מֶֽלֶךְ of the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel's yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֔אמֶר and said, ʾāmar פֹּ֚ה Here pō אֱלִישָׁ֣ע Elisha ʾĕlîšāʿ בֶּן the son bēn שָׁפָ֔ט of Shaphat, šāpāṭ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer יָ֥צַק poured yāṣaq מַ֖יִם water mayim עַל on ʿal יְדֵ֥י the hands yād אֵֽלִיָּֽהוּ׃ of Elijah. ʾēliyyâ

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ said, ʾāmar יְה֣וֹשָׁפָ֔ט And Jehoshaphat yĕhôšāpāṭ יֵ֥שׁ is yēš אוֹת֖וֹ with ʾēt דְּבַר The word dābār יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיֵּֽרְד֣וּ went down yārad אֵלָ֗יו to him. ʾēl מֶ֧לֶךְ him. So the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וִיהֽוֹשָׁפָ֖ט and Jehoshaphat yĕhôšāpāṭ וּמֶ֥לֶךְ and the king melek אֱדֽוֹם׃ of Edom ʾĕdōm

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֱלִישָׁ֜ע And Elisha ʾĕlîšāʿ אֶל unto ʾēl מֶ֤לֶךְ the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl מַה What mâ לִּ֣י וָלָ֔ךְ לֵ֚ךְ have I to do with thee? get hālak אֶל thee to ʾēl נְבִיאֵ֣י the prophets nābîʾ אָבִ֔יךָ of thy father, ʾāb וְאֶל and to ʾēl נְבִיאֵ֖י the prophets nābîʾ אִמֶּ֑ךָ of thy mother. ʾēm וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar לוֹ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ And the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אַ֗ל unto him, Nay: ʾal כִּֽי for kî קָרָ֤א hath called together, qārāʾ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ לִשְׁלֹ֙שֶׁת֙ three šālôš הַמְּלָכִ֣ים kings melek הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle לָתֵ֥ת to deliver nātan אוֹתָ֖ם ʾēt בְּיַד them into the hand yād מוֹאָֽב׃ of Moab. môʾāb

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar אֱלִישָׁ֗ע And Elisha ʾĕlîšāʿ חַי liveth, ḥay יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאוֹת֙ of hosts ṣābāʾ אֲשֶׁ֣ר whom ʾăšer עָמַ֣דְתִּי I stand, ʿāmad לְפָנָ֔יו before pānîm כִּ֗י surely, kî לוּלֵ֛י were it not that lûlēʾ פְּנֵ֛י the presence pānîm יְהֽוֹשָׁפָ֥ט of Jehoshaphat yĕhôšāpāṭ מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ אֲנִ֣י I ʾănî נֹשֵׂ֑א regard nāśāʾ אִם thee, nor ʾim אַבִּ֥יט I would not look nābaṭ אֵלֶ֖יךָ toward ʾēl וְאִם ʾim אֶרְאֶֽךָּ׃ see thee. rāʾâ

וְעַתָּ֖ה But now ʿattâ קְחוּ bring lāqaḥ לִ֣י מְנַגֵּ֑ן me a minstrel. nāgan וְהָיָה֙ And it came to pass, hāyâ כְּנַגֵּ֣ן when the minstrel nāgan הַֽמְנַגֵּ֔ן played, nāgan וַתְּהִ֥י came hāyâ עָלָ֖יו upon him. ʿal יַד that the hand yād יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar כֹּ֖ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ עָשֹׂ֛ה Make ʿāśâ הַנַּ֥חַל valley naḥal הַזֶּ֖ה this ze גֵּבִ֥ים׀ full of ditches. gēb גֵּבִֽים׃ gēb

כִּֽי For kî כֹ֣ה׀ thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֹֽא Ye shall not lōʾ תִרְא֥וּ see rāʾâ ר֙וּחַ֙ wind, rûaḥ וְלֹֽא neither lōʾ תִרְא֣וּ shall ye see rāʾâ גֶ֔שֶׁם rain; gešem וְהַנַּ֥חַל valley naḥal הַה֖וּא yet that hûʾ יִמָּ֣לֵא shall be filled mālēʾ מָ֑יִם with water, mayim וּשְׁתִיתֶ֛ם that ye may drink, šātâ אַתֶּ֥ם both ye, ʾattâ וּמִקְנֵיכֶ֖ם and your cattle, miqne וּֽבְהֶמְתְּכֶֽם׃ and your beasts. bĕhēmâ

וְנָקַ֥ל is a light thing qālal זֹ֖את And this zōt בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord: yĕhōwâ וְנָתַ֥ן he will deliver nātan אֶת ʾēt מוֹאָ֖ב the Moabites môʾāb בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃ also into your hand. yād

וְהִכִּיתֶ֞ם And ye shall smite nākâ כָּל every kōl עִ֤יר city, ʿîr מִבְצָר֙ fenced mibṣār וְכָל and every kōl עִ֣יר city, ʿîr מִבְח֔וֹר choice mibḥôr וְכָל every kōl עֵ֥ץ tree, ʿēṣ טוֹב֙ good ṭôb תַּפִּ֔ילוּ and shall fell nāpal וְכָל all kōl מַעְיְנֵי wells maʿyān מַ֖יִם of water, mayim תִּסְתֹּ֑מוּ and stop sātam וְכֹל֙ every kōl הַֽחֶלְקָ֣ה piece ḥelqâ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה good ṭôb תַּכְאִ֖בוּ and mar kāʾab בָּֽאֲבָנִֽים׃ of land with stones. ʾeben

וַיְהִ֤י And it came to pass hāyâ בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ in the morning, bōqer כַּֽעֲל֣וֹת was offered, ʿālâ הַמִּנְחָ֔ה when the meat offering minḥâ וְהִנֵּה that, behold, hinnē מַ֥יִם water mayim בָּאִ֖ים there came bôʾ מִדֶּ֣רֶךְ by the way derek אֱד֑וֹם of Edom, ʾĕdōm וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א was filled mālēʾ הָאָ֖רֶץ and the country ʾereṣ אֶת with ʾēt הַמָּֽיִם׃ water. mayim

וְכָל And when all kōl מוֹאָב֙ the Moabites môʾāb שָֽׁמְע֔וּ heard šāmaʿ כִּֽי that kî עָל֥וּ were come up ʿālâ הַמְּלָכִ֖ים the kings melek לְהִלָּ֣חֶם to fight lāḥam בָּ֑ם וַיִּצָּֽעֲק֗וּ against them, they gathered all ṣāʿaq מִכֹּ֨ל kōl חֹגֵ֤ר that were able to put on ḥāgar חֲגֹרָה֙ armour, ḥăgôr וָמַ֔עְלָה and upward, maʿal וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ and stood ʿāmad עַֽל in ʿal הַגְּבֽוּל׃ the border. gĕbûl

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ And they rose up early šākam בַבֹּ֔קֶר in the morning, bōqer וְהַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ and the sun šemeš זָֽרְחָ֣ה shone zāraḥ עַל upon ʿal הַמָּ֑יִם the water, mayim וַיִּרְא֨וּ saw rāʾâ מוֹאָ֥ב and the Moabites môʾāb מִנֶּ֛גֶד on the other side neged אֶת ʾēt הַמַּ֖יִם the water mayim אֲדֻמִּ֥ים red ʾādōm כַּדָּֽם׃ as blood: dām

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ And they said, ʾāmar דָּ֣ם blood: dām זֶ֔ה This ze הָֽחֳרֵ֤ב are surely ḥārab נֶֽחֶרְבוּ֙ slain, ḥārab הַמְּלָכִ֔ים the kings melek וַיַּכּ֖וּ and they have smitten nākâ אִ֣ישׁ one ʾîš אֶת ʾēt רֵעֵ֑הוּ another: rēaʿ וְעַתָּ֥ה now ʿattâ לַשָּׁלָ֖ל to the spoil. šālāl מוֹאָֽב׃ therefore, Moab, môʾāb

וַיָּבֹאוּ֮ And when they came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl מַֽחֲנֵ֣ה the camp maḥăne יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיָּקֻ֤מוּ rose up qûm יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ the Israelites yiśrāʾēl וַיַּכּ֣וּ and smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt מוֹאָ֔ב the Moabites, môʾāb וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ so that they fled nûs מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם before pānîm וַיַּ֨בּוּ bôʾ בָ֔הּ them: but they went forward nākâ וְהַכּ֖וֹת smiting nākâ אֶת ʾēt מוֹאָֽב׃ the Moabites, even in country. môʾāb

וְהֶֽעָרִ֣ים the cities, ʿîr יַֽהֲרֹ֡סוּ And they beat down hāras וְכָל and on every kōl חֶלְקָ֣ה piece ḥelqâ ט֠וֹבָה good ṭôb יַשְׁלִ֨יכוּ of land cast šālak אִישׁ every man ʾîš אַבְנ֜וֹ his stone, ʾeben וּמִלְא֗וּהָ and filled mālēʾ וְכָל all kōl מַעְיַן the wells maʿyān מַ֤יִם of water, mayim יִסְתֹּ֙מוּ֙ it; and they stopped sātam וְכָל all kōl עֵֽץ trees: ʿēṣ ט֣וֹב the good ṭôb יַפִּ֔ילוּ and felled nāpal עַד only ʿad הִשְׁאִ֧יר left šāʾar אֲבָנֶ֛יהָ they the stones ʾeben בַּקִּ֖יר חֲרָ֑שֶׂת in Kir-haraseth qîr ḥereś וַיָּסֹ֥בּוּ went about sābab הַקַּלָּעִ֖ים thereof; howbeit the slingers qallāʿ וַיַּכּֽוּהָ׃ and smote it. nākâ

וַיַּרְא֙ saw rāʾâ מֶ֣לֶךְ And when the king melek מוֹאָ֔ב of Moab môʾāb כִּֽי that kî חָזַ֥ק was too sore ḥāzaq מִמֶּ֖נּוּ for min הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה the battle milḥāmâ וַיִּקַּ֣ח him, he took lāqaḥ א֠וֹתוֹ with ʾēt שְׁבַע him seven šebaʿ מֵא֨וֹת hundred mēʾâ אִ֜ישׁ men ʾîš שֹׁ֣לֵֽף that drew šālap חֶ֗רֶב swords, ḥereb לְהַבְקִ֛יעַ to break through bāqaʿ אֶל unto ʾēl מֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek אֱד֖וֹם of Edom: ʾĕdōm וְלֹ֥א not. lōʾ יָכֹֽלוּ׃ but they could yākōl

וַיִּקַּח֩ Then he took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt בְּנ֨וֹ son bēn הַבְּכ֜וֹר his eldest bĕkôr אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer יִמְלֹ֣ךְ should have reigned mālak תַּחְתָּ֗יו in his stead, taḥat וַיַּֽעֲלֵ֤הוּ and offered ʿālâ עֹלָה֙ him a burnt offering ʿōlâ עַל upon ʿal הַ֣חֹמָ֔ה the wall. ḥômâ וַיְהִ֥י And there was hāyâ קֶֽצֶף indignation qeṣep גָּד֖וֹל great gādôl עַל against ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַיִּסְעוּ֙ and they departed nāsaʿ מֵֽעָלָ֔יו from ʿal וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ him, and returned šûb לָאָֽרֶץ׃ to land. ʾereṣ
