בֶּן old bēn שְׁמֹנֶ֤ה eight šĕmōne שָׁנָה֙ years šāne יֹֽאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ Josiah yōʾšiyyâ בְמָלְכ֔וֹ when he began to reign, mālak וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים thirty šĕlôšîm וְאַחַת֙ and one ʾeḥād שָׁנָ֔ה years šāne מָלַ֖ךְ and he reigned mālak בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם in Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim וְשֵׁ֣ם name šēm אִמּ֔וֹ And his mother's ʾēm יְדִידָ֥ה Jedidah, yĕdîdâ בַת the daughter bat עֲדָ֖יָה of Adaiah ʿădāyâ מִבָּֽצְקַֽת׃ of Boscath. boṣqat

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ And he did ʿāśâ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר right yāšār בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ and walked hālak בְּכָל in all kōl דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ the way derek דָּוִ֣ד of David dāwid אָבִ֔יו his father, ʾāb וְלֹא lōʾ סָ֖ר and turned not aside sûr יָמִ֥ין to the right hand yāmîn וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃ or to the left. śĕmōwl

וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass hāyâ בִּשְׁמֹנֶ֤ה in the eighteenth šĕmōne עֶשְׂרֵה֙ ʿāśār שָׁנָ֔ה year šāne לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ of king melek יֹֽאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ Josiah, yōʾšiyyâ שָׁלַ֣ח sent šālaḥ הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ the king melek אֶת ʾēt שָׁפָ֨ן Shaphan šāpān בֶּן the son bēn אֲצַלְיָ֤הוּ of Azaliah, ʾăṣalyāhû בֶן the son bēn מְשֻׁלָּם֙ of Meshullam, mĕšullām הַסֹּפֵ֔ר the scribe, sāpar בֵּ֥ית to the house bayit יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

עֲלֵ֗ה Go up ʿālâ אֶל to ʾēl חִלְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ Hilkiah ḥilqiyyâ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן priest, kōhēn הַגָּד֔וֹל the high gādôl וְיַתֵּ֣ם that he may sum tāmam אֶת ʾēt הַכֶּ֔סֶף the silver kesep הַמּוּבָ֖א which is brought bôʾ בֵּ֣ית into the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer אָֽסְפ֛וּ have gathered ʾāsap שֹֽׁמְרֵ֥י the keepers šāmar הַסַּ֖ף of the door sap מֵאֵ֥ת of ʾēt הָעָֽם׃ the people: ʿam

וְיִתְּנֻ֗ה And let them deliver nātan עַל it into ʿal יַד֙ the hand yād עֹשֵׂ֣י of the doers ʿāśâ הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה of the work, mĕlāʾkâ הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים that have the oversight pāqad בֵּ֣בית of the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord: yĕhōwâ וְיִתְּנ֣וּ and let them give nātan אֹת֗וֹ ʾēt לְעֹשֵׂ֤י it to the doers ʿāśâ הַמְּלָאכָה֙ of the work mĕlāʾkâ אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer בְּבֵ֣ית in the house bayit יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ לְחַזֵּ֖ק to repair ḥāzaq בֶּ֥דֶק the breaches bedeq הַבָּֽיִת׃ of the house, bayit

לֶחָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים Unto carpenters, ḥāroš וְלַבֹּנִ֖ים and builders, bānâ וְלַגֹּֽדְרִ֑ים and masons, gādar וְלִקְנ֤וֹת and to buy qānâ עֵצִים֙ timber ʿēṣ וְאַבְנֵ֣י stone ʾeben מַחְצֵ֔ב and hewn maḥṣēb לְחַזֵּ֖ק to repair ḥāzaq אֶת ʾēt הַבָּֽיִת׃ the house. bayit

אַ֚ךְ Howbeit ʾak לֹֽא there was no lōʾ יֵֽחָשֵׁ֣ב reckoning made ḥāšab אִתָּ֔ם with ʾēt הַכֶּ֖סֶף them of the money kesep הַנִּתָּ֣ן that was delivered nātan עַל into ʿal יָדָ֑ם their hand, yād כִּ֥י because kî בֶֽאֱמוּנָ֖ה faithfully. ʾĕmûnâ הֵ֥ם they hēm עֹשִֽׂים׃ dealt ʿāśâ

וַ֠יֹּאמֶר said ʾāmar חִלְקִיָּ֜הוּ And Hilkiah ḥilqiyyâ הַכֹּהֵ֤ן priest kōhēn הַגָּדוֹל֙ the high gādôl עַל unto ʿal שָׁפָ֣ן Shaphan šāpān הַסֹּפֵ֔ר the scribe, sāpar סֵ֧פֶר the book sēper הַתּוֹרָ֛ה of the law tôrâ מָצָ֖אתִי I have found māṣāʾ בְּבֵ֣ית in the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord. yĕhōwâ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן gave nātan חִלְקִיָּ֧ה And Hilkiah ḥilqiyyâ אֶת ʾēt הַסֵּ֛פֶר the book sēper אֶל to ʾēl שָׁפָ֖ן Shaphan, šāpān וַיִּקְרָאֵֽהוּ׃ and he read it. qārāʾ

וַיָּבֹ֞א came bôʾ שָׁפָ֤ן And Shaphan šāpān הַסֹּפֵר֙ the scribe sāpar אֶל to ʾēl הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek וַיָּ֥שֶׁב and brought šûb אֶת again, ʾēt הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek דָּבָ֑ר word dābār וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הִתִּ֤יכוּ have gathered nātak עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ Thy servants ʿebed אֶת ʾēt הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ the money kesep הַנִּמְצָ֣א that was found māṣāʾ בַבַּ֔יִת in the house, bayit וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֗הוּ and have delivered nātan עַל it into ʿal יַד֙ the hand yād עֹשֵׂ֣י of them that do ʿāśâ הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה the work, mĕlāʾkâ הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים that have the oversight pāqad בֵּ֥ית of the house bayit יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיַּגֵּ֞ד shewed nāgad שָׁפָ֤ן And Shaphan šāpān הַסֹּפֵר֙ the scribe sāpar לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ the king, melek לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar סֵ֚פֶר me a book. sēper נָ֣תַן hath delivered nātan לִ֔י חִלְקִיָּ֖ה Hilkiah ḥilqiyyâ הַכֹּהֵ֑ן the priest kōhēn וַיִּקְרָאֵ֥הוּ read qārāʾ שָׁפָ֖ן And Shaphan šāpān לִפְנֵ֥י it before pānîm הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king. melek

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass, hāyâ כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ had heard šāmaʿ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ when the king melek אֶת ʾēt דִּבְרֵ֖י the words dābār סֵ֣פֶר of the book sēper הַתּוֹרָ֑ה of the law, tôrâ וַיִּקְרַ֖ע that he rent qāraʿ אֶת ʾēt בְּגָדָֽיו׃ his clothes. beged

וַיְצַ֣ו commanded ṣāwâ הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ And the king melek אֶת ʾēt חִלְקִיָּ֣ה Hilkiah ḥilqiyyâ הַכֹּהֵ֡ן the priest, kōhēn וְאֶת ʾēt אֲחִיקָ֣ם and Ahikam ʾăḥîqām בֶּן the son bēn שָׁ֠פָן of Shaphan, šāpān וְאֶת ʾēt עַכְבּ֨וֹר and Achbor ʿakbôr בֶּן the son bēn מִֽיכָיָ֜ה of Michaiah, mîkāyâ וְאֵ֣ת׀ ʾēt שָׁפָ֣ן and Shaphan šāpān הַסֹּפֵ֗ר the scribe, sāpar וְאֵ֛ת ʾēt עֲשָׂיָ֥ה and Asahiah ʿăśāyâ עֶֽבֶד a servant ʿebed הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ of the king's, melek לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

לְכוּ֩ Go hālak דִרְשׁ֨וּ ye, inquire dāraš אֶת of ʾēt יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ בַּֽעֲדִ֣י for bĕʿad וּבְעַד me, and for bĕʿad הָעָ֗ם the people, ʿam וּבְעַד֙ and for bĕʿad כָּל all kōl יְהוּדָ֔ה Judah, yĕhûdâ עַל concerning ʿal דִּבְרֵ֛י the words dābār הַסֵּ֥פֶר book sēper הַנִּמְצָ֖א that is found: māṣāʾ הַזֶּ֑ה of this ze כִּֽי for kî גְדוֹלָ֞ה great gādôl חֲמַ֣ת the wrath ḥēmâ יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer הִיא֙ hûʾ נִצְּתָ֣ה is kindled yāṣat בָ֔נוּ עַל֩ against us, because ʿal אֲשֶׁ֨ר ʾăšer לֹֽא have not lōʾ שָׁמְע֜וּ hearkened šāmaʿ אֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ our fathers ʾāb עַל unto ʿal דִּבְרֵי֙ the words dābār הַסֵּ֣פֶר book, sēper הַזֶּ֔ה of this ze לַֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת to do ʿāśâ כְּכָל according unto all kōl הַכָּת֥וּב that which is written kātab עָלֵֽינוּ׃ concerning us. ʿal

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ went hālak חִלְקִיָּ֣הוּ So Hilkiah ḥilqiyyâ הַ֠כֹּהֵן the priest, kōhēn וַֽאֲחִיקָ֨ם and Ahikam, ʾăḥîqām וְעַכְבּ֜וֹר and Achbor, ʿakbôr וְשָׁפָ֣ן and Shaphan, šāpān וַֽעֲשָׂיָ֗ה and Asahiah, ʿăśāyâ אֶל unto ʾēl חֻלְדָּ֨ה Huldah ḥuldâ הַנְּבִיאָ֜ה the prophetess, nĕbîʾâ אֵ֣שֶׁת׀ the wife ʾiššâ שַׁלֻּ֣ם of Shallum šallûm בֶּן the son bēn תִּקְוָ֗ה of Tikvah, tiqwâ בֶּן the son bēn חַרְחַס֙ of Harhas, ḥarḥas שֹׁמֵ֣ר keeper šāmar הַבְּגָדִ֔ים of the wardrobe; beged וְהִ֛יא (now she hûʾ יֹשֶׁ֥בֶת dwelt yāšab בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם in Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim בַּמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה in the college;) mišne וַֽיְדַבְּר֖וּ and they communed dābar אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ with her. ʾēl

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר And she said ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם unto ʾēl כֹּֽה them, Thus kō אָמַ֥ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אִמְר֣וּ Tell ʾāmar לָאִ֔ישׁ the man ʾîš אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer שָׁלַ֥ח sent šālaḥ אֶתְכֶ֖ם ʾēt אֵלָֽי׃ you to me, ʾēl

כֹּ֚ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ הִנְנִ֨י Behold, hēn מֵבִ֥יא I will bring bôʾ רָעָ֛ה evil raʿ אֶל upon ʾēl הַמָּק֥וֹם place, māqôm הַזֶּ֖ה this ze וְעַל and upon ʿal יֹֽשְׁבָ֑יו the inhabitants yāšab אֵ֚ת thereof, ʾēt כָּל all kōl דִּבְרֵ֣י the words dābār הַסֵּ֔פֶר of the book sēper אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer קָרָ֖א hath read: qārāʾ מֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek יְהוּדָֽה׃ of Judah yĕhûdâ

תַּ֣חַת׀ Because taḥat אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer עֲזָב֗וּנִי they have forsaken ʿāzab וַֽיְקַטְּרוּ֙ me, and have burned incense qāṭar לֵֽאלֹהִ֣ים gods, ʾĕlōhîm אֲחֵרִ֔ים unto other ʾaḥēr לְמַ֙עַן֙ that maʿan הַכְעִיסֵ֔נִי they might provoke me to anger kaʿas בְּכֹ֖ל with all kōl מַֽעֲשֵׂ֣ה the works maʿăśe יְדֵיהֶ֑ם of their hands; yād וְנִצְּתָ֧ה shall be kindled yāṣat חֲמָתִ֛י therefore my wrath ḥēmâ בַּמָּק֥וֹם place, māqôm הַזֶּ֖ה against this ze וְלֹ֥א and shall not lōʾ תִכְבֶּֽה׃ be quenched. kābâ

וְאֶל But to ʾēl מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek יְהוּדָ֗ה of Judah yĕhûdâ הַשֹּׁלֵ֤חַ which sent šālaḥ אֶתְכֶם֙ of ʾēt לִדְרֹ֣שׁ you to inquire dāraš אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ כֹּ֥ה thus kō תֹֽאמְר֖וּ shall ye say ʾāmar אֵלָ֑יו to ʾēl כֹּֽה him, Thus kō אָמַ֤ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl הַדְּבָרִ֖ים the words dābār אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer שָׁמָֽעְתָּ׃ thou hast heard; šāmaʿ

יַ֠עַן Because yaʿan רַךְ was tender, rākak לְבָ֨בְךָ֜ thine heart lēbāb וַתִּכָּנַ֣ע׀ and thou hast humbled thyself kānaʿ מִפְּנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ בְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֡ when thou heardest šāmaʿ אֲשֶׁ֣ר what ʾăšer דִּבַּרְתִּי֩ I spake dābar עַל against ʿal הַמָּק֨וֹם place, māqôm הַזֶּ֜ה this ze וְעַל and against ʿal יֹֽשְׁבָ֗יו the inhabitants yāšab לִֽהְי֤וֹת thereof, that they should become hāyâ לְשַׁמָּה֙ a desolation šammâ וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה and a curse, qĕlālâ וַתִּקְרַע֙ and hast rent qāraʿ אֶת ʾēt בְּגָדֶ֔יךָ thy clothes, beged וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה and wept bākâ לְפָנָ֑י before pānîm וְגַ֧ם also gam אָֽנֹכִ֛י me; I ʾānōkî שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי have heard šāmaʿ נְאֻם saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

לָכֵן֩ therefore, kēn הִנְנִ֨י Behold hēn אֹֽסִפְךָ֜ I will gather ʾāsap עַל thee unto ʿal אֲבֹתֶ֗יךָ thy fathers, ʾāb וְנֶֽאֱסַפְתָּ֣ and thou shalt be gathered ʾāsap אֶל into ʾēl קִבְרֹתֶיךָ֮ thy grave qeber בְּשָׁלוֹם֒ in peace; šālôm וְלֹֽא shall not lōʾ תִרְאֶ֣ינָה see rāʾâ עֵינֶ֔יךָ and thine eyes ʿayin בְּכֹל֙ all kōl הָֽרָעָ֔ה the evil raʿ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer אֲנִ֥י I ʾănî מֵבִ֖יא will bring bôʾ עַל upon ʿal הַמָּק֣וֹם place. māqôm הַזֶּ֑ה this ze וַיָּשִׁ֥בוּ And they brought šûb אֶת ʾēt הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek דָּבָֽר׃ word again. dābār
