וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ came, bôʾ אַנְשֵׁ֣י׀ And the men ʾîš קִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֗ים of Kirjath-jearim qiryat yĕʿārîm וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ and fetched up ʿālâ אֶת ʾēt אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּבִ֣אוּ and brought bôʾ אֹת֔וֹ ʾēt אֶל it into ʾēl בֵּ֥ית the house bayit אֲבִֽינָדָ֖ב of Abinadab ʾăbînādāb בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה in the hill, gibʿâ וְאֶת ʾēt אֶלְעָזָ֤ר Eleazar ʾelʿāzār בְּנוֹ֙ his son bēn קִדְּשׁ֔וּ and sanctified qādaš לִשְׁמֹ֖ר to keep šāmar אֶת ʾēt אֲר֥וֹן the ark ʾārôn יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass, hāyâ מִיּ֞וֹם while yôm שֶׁ֤בֶת abode yāšab הָֽאָרוֹן֙ the ark ʾārôn בְּקִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֔ים in Kirjath-jearim, qiryat yĕʿārîm וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ was long; rābâ הַיָּמִ֔ים that the time yôm וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ for it was hāyâ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים twenty ʿeśrîm שָׁנָ֑ה years: šāne וַיִּנָּה֛וּ lamented nāhâ כָּל and all kōl בֵּ֥ית the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אַֽחֲרֵ֥י after ʾaḥar יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר spake ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl בֵּ֣ית the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֵאמֹר֒ saying, ʾāmar אִם If ʾim בְּכָל with all kōl לְבַבְכֶ֗ם your hearts, lēbāb אַתֶּ֤ם ye ʾattâ שָׁבִים֙ do return šûb אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ הָסִ֜ירוּ put away sûr אֶת ʾēt אֱלֹהֵ֧י gods ʾĕlōhîm הַנֵּכָ֛ר the strange nēkār מִתּֽוֹכְכֶ֖ם from among tāwek וְהָֽעַשְׁתָּר֑וֹת and Ashtaroth ʿaštārôt וְהָכִ֨ינוּ you, and prepare kûn לְבַבְכֶ֤ם your hearts lēbāb אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָה֙ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְעִבְדֻ֣הוּ and serve ʿābad לְבַדּ֔וֹ him only: bad וְיַצֵּ֥ל and he will deliver nāṣal אֶתְכֶ֖ם ʾēt מִיַּ֥ד you out of the hand yād פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ of the Philistines. pĕlištî

וַיָּסִ֙ירוּ֙ did put away sûr בְּנֵ֣י Then the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת ʾēt הַבְּעָלִ֖ים Baalim baʿal וְאֶת ʾēt הָֽעַשְׁתָּרֹ֑ת and Ashtaroth, ʿaštārôt וַיַּֽעַבְד֥וּ and served ʿābad אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לְבַדּֽוֹ׃ only. bad

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl קִבְצ֥וּ Gather qābaṣ אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl הַמִּצְפָּ֑תָה to Mizpeh, miṣpâ וְאֶתְפַּלֵּ֥ל and I will pray pālal בַּֽעַדְכֶ֖ם for bĕʿad אֶל you unto ʾēl יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיִּקָּֽבְצ֣וּ And they gathered together qābaṣ הַ֠מִּצְפָּתָה to Mizpeh, miṣpâ וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ and drew šāʾab מַ֜יִם water, mayim וַֽיִּשְׁפְּכ֣וּ׀ and poured out šāpak לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּצ֙וּמוּ֙ and fasted ṣûm בַּיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַה֔וּא on that hûʾ וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ and said ʾāmar שָׁ֔ם there, šām חָטָ֖אנוּ We have sinned ḥāṭāʾ לַֽיהוָ֑ה against the Lord. yĕhōwâ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֧ט judged šāpaṭ שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶת ʾēt בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl בַּמִּצְפָּֽה׃ in Mizpeh. miṣpâ

וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ heard šāmaʿ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים And when the Philistines pĕlištî כִּֽי that kî הִתְקַבְּצ֤וּ were gathered together qābaṣ בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl הַמִּצְפָּ֔תָה to Mizpeh, miṣpâ וַיַּֽעֲל֥וּ went up ʿālâ סַרְנֵֽי the lords seren פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים of the Philistines pĕlištî אֶל against ʾēl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel. yiśrāʾēl וַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ heard šāmaʿ בְּנֵ֣י And when the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיִּֽרְא֖וּ they were afraid yārēʾ מִפְּנֵ֥י of pānîm פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ the Philistines. pĕlištî

וַיֹּֽאמְר֤וּ said ʾāmar בְנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל to ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl אַל not ʾal תַּֽחֲרֵ֣שׁ Cease ḥāraš מִמֶּ֔נּוּ for min מִזְּעֹ֖ק to cry zāʿaq אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ our God ʾĕlōhîm וְיֹֽשִׁעֵ֖נוּ us, that he will save yāšaʿ מִיַּ֥ד us out of the hand yād פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ of the Philistines. pĕlištî

וַיִּקַּ֣ח took lāqaḥ שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl טְלֵ֤ה lamb, ṭāle חָלָב֙ sucking ḥālāb אֶחָ֔ד a ʾeḥād וַיַּֽעֲלֵ֧ה and offered ʿālâ עוֹלָ֛ה a burnt offering ʿōlâ כָּלִ֖יל wholly kālîl לַֽיהוָ֑ה unto the Lord: yĕhōwâ וַיִּזְעַ֨ק cried zāʿaq שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל and Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּעַ֣ד for bĕʿad יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֖הוּ heard him. ʿānâ יְהוָֽה׃ and the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיְהִ֤י was hāyâ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And as Samuel šĕmûʾēl מַֽעֲלֶ֣ה offering up ʿālâ הָֽעוֹלָ֔ה the burnt offering, ʿōlâ וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֣ים the Philistines pĕlištî נִגְּשׁ֔וּ drew near nāgaš לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה to battle milḥāmâ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל against Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַיַּרְעֵ֣ם thundered rāʿam יְהוָ֣ה׀ but the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּקוֹל thunder qôl גָּ֠דוֹל with a great gādôl בַּיּ֨וֹם day yôm הַה֤וּא on that hûʾ עַל upon ʿal פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ the Philistines, pĕlištî וַיְהֻמֵּ֔ם and discomfited hāmam וַיִּנָּֽגְפ֖וּ them; and they were smitten nāgap לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ went out yāṣāʾ אַנְשֵׁ֤י And the men ʾĕnôš יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl מִן of min הַמִּצְפָּ֔ה Mizpeh, miṣpâ וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ and pursued rādap אֶת ʾēt פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines, pĕlištî וַיַּכּ֕וּם and smote nākâ עַד them, until ʿad מִתַּ֖חַת taḥat לְבֵ֥ית כָּֽר׃ under Beth-car. bêt kar

וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל Then Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶ֣בֶן stone, ʾeben אַחַ֗ת a ʾeḥād וַיָּ֤שֶׂם and set śûm בֵּֽין between bên הַמִּצְפָּה֙ Mizpeh miṣpâ וּבֵ֣ין bên הַשֵּׁ֔ן and Shen, šēn וַיִּקְרָ֥א and called qārāʾ אֶת ʾēt שְׁמָ֖הּ the name šēm אֶ֣בֶן הָעָ֑זֶר of it Eben-ezer, ʾeben hāʿēzer וַיֹּאמַ֕ר saying, ʾāmar עַד Hitherto ʿad הֵ֖נָּה hēnnâ עֲזָרָ֥נוּ helped us. ʿāzar יְהוָֽה׃ hath the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיִּכָּֽנְעוּ֙ were subdued, kānaʿ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים So the Philistines pĕlištî וְלֹֽא no lōʾ יָסְפ֣וּ more yāsap ע֔וֹד ʿôd לָב֖וֹא and they came bôʾ בִּגְב֣וּל into the coast gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַתְּהִ֤י was hāyâ יַד and the hand yād יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים against the Philistines pĕlištî כֹּ֖ל all kōl יְמֵ֥י the days yôm שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃ of Samuel. šĕmûʾēl

וַתָּשֹׁ֣בְנָה were restored šûb הֶֽעָרִ֡ים And the cities ʿîr אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer לָֽקְחוּ had taken lāqaḥ פְלִשְׁתִּים֩ the Philistines pĕlištî מֵאֵ֨ת from ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל׀ Israel yiśrāʾēl לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ to Israel, yiśrāʾēl מֵֽעֶקְר֣וֹן from Ekron ʿeqrôn וְעַד even unto ʿad גַּ֔ת Gath; gat וְאֶ֨ת ʾēt גְּבוּלָ֔ן and the coasts gĕbûl הִצִּ֥יל deliver nāṣal יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל thereof did Israel yiśrāʾēl מִיַּ֣ד out of the hands yād פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים of the Philistines. pĕlištî וַיְהִ֣י And there was hāyâ שָׁל֔וֹם peace šālôm בֵּ֥ין between bên יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וּבֵ֥ין bên הָֽאֱמֹרִֽי׃ and the Amorites. ʾĕmōrî

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ט judged šāpaṭ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl כֹּ֖ל all kōl יְמֵ֥י the days yôm חַיָּֽיו׃ of his life. ḥay

וְהָלַ֗ךְ And he went hālak מִדֵּ֤י from day שָׁנָה֙ year šāne בְּשָׁנָ֔ה to year šāne וְסָבַב֙ in circuit sābab בֵּֽית אֵ֔ל to Beth-el, bêt ʾēl וְהַגִּלְגָּ֖ל and Gilgal, gilgāl וְהַמִּצְפָּ֑ה and Mizpeh, miṣpâ וְשָׁפַט֙ and judged šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אֵ֥ת in ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַמְּקוֹמ֖וֹת places. māqôm הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ those ʾēlle

וּתְשֻֽׁבָת֤וֹ And his return tĕšûbâ הָֽרָמָ֙תָה֙ to Ramah; rāmâ כִּֽי for kî שָׁ֣ם there šām בֵּית֔וֹ his house; bayit וְשָׁ֖ם and there šām שָׁפָ֣ט he judged šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַיִּֽבֶן he built bānâ שָׁ֥ם and there šām מִזְבֵּ֖חַ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָֽה׃ unto the Lord. yĕhōwâ
