וַיְהִ֥י came hāyâ דְבַר And the word dābār שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל of Samuel šĕmûʾēl לְכָל to all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel. yiśrāʾēl וַיֵּצֵ֣א went out yāṣāʾ יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ Now Israel yiśrāʾēl לִקְרַ֨את against qirʾâ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים the Philistines pĕlištî לַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה to battle, milḥāmâ וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ and pitched ḥānâ עַל beside ʿal הָאֶ֣בֶן הָעֵ֔זֶר Eben-ezer: ʾeben hāʿēzer וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים and the Philistines pĕlištî חָנ֥וּ pitched ḥānâ בַֽאֲפֵֽק׃ in Aphek. ʾăpēq

וַיַּֽעַרְכ֨וּ put themselves in array ʿārak פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים And the Philistines pĕlištî לִקְרַ֣את against qirʾâ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַתִּטֹּשׁ֙ and when they joined nāṭaš הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה battle, milḥāmâ וַיִּנָּ֥גֶף was smitten nāgap יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines: pĕlištî וַיַּכּ֤וּ and they slew nākâ בַמַּֽעֲרָכָה֙ of the army maʿărākâ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה in the field śāde כְּאַרְבַּ֥עַת about four ʾarbaʿ אֲלָפִ֖ים thousand ʾelep אִֽישׁ׃ men. ʾîš

וַיָּבֹ֣א were come bôʾ הָעָם֮ And when the people ʿam אֶל into ʾēl הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֒ the camp, maḥăne וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ said, ʾāmar זִקְנֵ֣י the elders zāqēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl לָ֣מָּה Wherefore mâ נְגָפָ֧נוּ smitten nāgap יְהוָ֛ה hath the Lord yĕhōwâ הַיּ֖וֹם us to day yôm לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines? pĕlištî נִקְחָ֧ה Let us fetch lāqaḥ אֵלֵ֣ינוּ unto ʾēl מִשִּׁלֹ֗ה out of Shiloh šîlō אֶת ʾēt אֲרוֹן֙ the ark ʾārôn בְּרִ֣ית of the covenant bĕrît יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ וְיָבֹ֣א us, that, when it cometh bôʾ בְקִרְבֵּ֔נוּ among qereb וְיֹֽשִׁעֵ֖נוּ us, it may save yāšaʿ מִכַּ֥ף us out of the hand kap אֹֽיְבֵֽינוּ׃ of our enemies. ʾōyēb

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח sent šālaḥ הָעָם֙ So the people ʿam שִׁלֹ֔ה to Shiloh, šîlō וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ that they might bring nāśāʾ מִשָּׁ֗ם from thence šām אֵ֣ת ʾēt אֲר֧וֹן the ark ʾārôn בְּרִית of the covenant bĕrît יְהוָ֛ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ יֹשֵׁ֣ב which dwelleth yāšab הַכְּרֻבִ֑ים the cherubims: kĕrûb וְשָׁ֞ם there šām שְׁנֵ֣י and the two šĕnayim בְנֵֽי sons bēn עֵלִ֗י of Eli, ʿēlî עִם with ʿim אֲרוֹן֙ the ark ʾārôn בְּרִ֣ית of the covenant bĕrît הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God. ʾĕlōhîm חָפְנִ֖י Hophni ḥopnî וּפִֽינְחָֽס׃ and Phinehas, pînĕḥās

וַיְהִ֗י hāyâ כְּב֨וֹא came bôʾ אֲר֤וֹן And when the ark ʾārôn בְּרִית of the covenant bĕrît יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל into ʾēl הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה the camp, maḥăne וַיָּרִ֥עוּ shouted rûaʿ כָל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl תְּרוּעָ֣ה shout, tĕrûʿâ גְדוֹלָ֑ה with a great gādôl וַתֵּהֹ֖ם rang again. hûm הָאָֽרֶץ׃ so that the earth ʾereṣ

וַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּ heard šāmaʿ פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ And when the Philistines pĕlištî אֶת ʾēt ק֣וֹל the noise qôl הַתְּרוּעָ֔ה of the shout, tĕrûʿâ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ they said, ʾāmar מֶ֠ה What mâ ק֣וֹל the noise qôl הַתְּרוּעָ֧ה shout tĕrûʿâ הַגְּדוֹלָ֛ה great gādôl הַזֹּ֖את of this zōt בְּמַֽחֲנֵ֣ה in the camp maḥăne הָֽעִבְרִ֑ים of the Hebrews? ʿibrî וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ And they understood yādaʿ כִּ֚י that kî אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ בָּ֖א was come bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ the camp. maḥăne

וַיִּֽרְאוּ֙ were afraid, yārēʾ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים And the Philistines pĕlištî כִּ֣י for kî אָֽמְר֔וּ they said, ʾāmar בָּ֥א is come bôʾ אֱלֹהִ֖ים God ʾĕlōhîm אֶל into ʾēl הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה the camp. maḥăne וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ And they said, ʾāmar א֣וֹי Woe ʾôy לָ֔נוּ כִּ֣י unto us! for kî לֹ֥א there hath not lōʾ הָֽיְתָ֛ה been hāyâ כָּזֹ֖את such a thing zōt אֶתְמ֥וֹל heretofore. ʾetmôl שִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃ šilšôm

א֣וֹי Woe ʾôy לָ֔נוּ מִ֣י unto us! who mî יַצִּילֵ֔נוּ shall deliver nāṣal מִיַּ֛ד us out of the hand yād הָֽאֱלֹהִ֥ים Gods? ʾĕlōhîm הָֽאַדִּירִ֖ים mighty ʾaddîr הָאֵ֑לֶּה of these ʾēlle אֵ֧לֶּה these ʾēlle הֵ֣ם hēm הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים the Gods ʾĕlōhîm הַמַּכִּ֧ים that smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt מִצְרַ֛יִם the Egyptians miṣrayim בְּכָל with all kōl מַכָּ֖ה the plagues makkâ בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ in the wilderness. midbār

הִֽתְחַזְּק֞וּ Be strong, ḥāzaq וִֽהְי֤וּ and quit hāyâ לַֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ yourselves like men, ʾîš פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים O ye Philistines, pĕlištî פֶּ֚ן pēn תַּֽעַבְד֣וּ that ye be not servants ʿābad לָֽעִבְרִ֔ים unto the Hebrews, ʿibrî כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר as ʾăšer עָֽבְד֖וּ they have been ʿābad לָכֶ֑ם וִֽהְיִיתֶ֥ם to you: quit hāyâ לַֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים yourselves like men, ʾîš וְנִלְחַמְתֶּֽם׃ and fight. lāḥam

וַיִּלָּֽחֲמ֣וּ fought, lāḥam פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים And the Philistines pĕlištî וַיִּנָּ֤גֶף was smitten, nāgap יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ and Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙ and they fled nûs אִ֣ישׁ every man ʾîš לְאֹֽהָלָ֔יו into his tent: ʾōhel וַתְּהִ֥י and there was hāyâ הַמַּכָּ֖ה slaughter; makkâ גְּדוֹלָ֣ה great gādôl מְאֹ֑ד a very mĕʾōd וַיִּפֹּל֙ for there fell nāpal מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים thirty šĕlôšîm אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep רַגְלִֽי׃ footmen. raglî

וַֽאֲר֥וֹן And the ark ʾārôn אֱלֹהִ֖ים of God ʾĕlōhîm נִלְקָ֑ח was taken; lāqaḥ וּשְׁנֵ֤י and the two šĕnayim בְנֵֽי sons bēn עֵלִי֙ of Eli, ʿēlî מֵ֔תוּ were slain. mût חָפְנִ֖י Hophni ḥopnî וּפִֽינְחָֽס׃ and Phinehas, pînĕḥās

וַיָּ֤רָץ And there ran rûṣ אִישׁ a man ʾîš בִּנְיָמִן֙ of Benjamin binyāmîn מֵהַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה out of the army, maʿărākâ וַיָּבֹ֥א and came bôʾ שִׁלֹ֖ה to Shiloh šîlō בַּיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַה֑וּא the same hûʾ וּמַדָּ֣יו with his clothes mad קְרֻעִ֔ים rent, qāraʿ וַֽאֲדָמָ֖ה and with earth ʾădāmâ עַל upon ʿal רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ his head. rōš

וַיָּב֗וֹא And when he came, bôʾ וְהִנֵּ֣ה lo, hinnē עֵ֠לִי Eli ʿēlî יֹשֵׁ֨ב sat yāšab עַֽל upon ʿal הַכִּסֵּ֜א a seat kissēʾ יַ֥ד nākâ דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ by the wayside derek מְצַפֶּ֔ה watching: ṣāpâ כִּֽי for kî הָיָ֤ה hāyâ לִבּוֹ֙ his heart lēb חָרֵ֔ד trembled ḥārēd עַ֖ל for ʿal אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים of God. ʾĕlōhîm וְהָאִ֗ישׁ And when the man ʾîš בָּ֚א came bôʾ לְהַגִּ֣יד and told nāgad בָּעִ֔יר into the city, ʿîr וַתִּזְעַ֖ק cried out. zāʿaq כָּל all kōl הָעִֽיר׃ the city ʿîr

וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע heard šāmaʿ עֵלִי֙ And when Eli ʿēlî אֶת ʾēt ק֣וֹל the noise qôl הַצְּעָקָ֔ה of the crying, ṣaʿăqâ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר he said, ʾāmar מֶ֛ה What mâ ק֥וֹל the noise qôl הֶֽהָמ֖וֹן tumult? hāmôn הַזֶּ֑ה of this ze וְהָאִ֣ישׁ And the man ʾîš מִהַ֔ר in hastily, māhar וַיָּבֹ֖א came bôʾ וַיַּגֵּ֥ד and told nāgad לְעֵלִֽי׃ Eli. ʿēlî

וְעֵלִ֕י Now Eli ʿēlî בֶּן old; bēn תִּשְׁעִ֥ים was ninety tišʿîm וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה and eight šĕmōne שָׁנָ֑ה years šāne וְעֵינָ֣יו and his eyes ʿayin קָ֔מָה were dim, qûm וְלֹ֥א not lōʾ יָכ֖וֹל that he could yākōl לִרְאֽוֹת׃ see. rāʾâ

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar הָאִ֜ישׁ And the man ʾîš אֶל unto ʾēl עֵלִ֗י Eli, ʿēlî אָֽנֹכִי֙ I ʾānōkî הַבָּ֣א he that came bôʾ מִן out of min הַמַּֽעֲרָכָ֔ה the army, maʿărākâ וַֽאֲנִ֕י and I ʾănî מִן out of min הַמַּֽעֲרָכָ֖ה the army. maʿărākâ נַ֣סְתִּי fled nûs הַיּ֑וֹם to day yôm וַיֹּ֛אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar מֶֽה What mâ הָיָ֥ה is hāyâ הַדָּבָ֖ר there done, dābār בְּנִֽי׃ my son? bēn

וַיַּ֨עַן answered ʿānâ הַֽמְבַשֵּׂ֜ר And the messenger bāśar וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and said, ʾāmar נָ֤ס is fled nûs יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Israel yiśrāʾēl לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines, pĕlištî וְגַ֛ם also gam מַגֵּפָ֥ה slaughter maggēpâ גְדוֹלָ֖ה a great gādôl הָֽיְתָ֣ה and there hath been hāyâ בָעָ֑ם among the people, ʿam וְגַם also, gam שְׁנֵ֨י and thy two šĕnayim בָנֶ֜יךָ sons bēn מֵ֗תוּ are dead, mût חָפְנִי֙ Hophni ḥopnî וּפִ֣ינְחָ֔ס and Phinehas, pînĕḥās וַֽאֲר֥וֹן and the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים of God ʾĕlōhîm נִלְקָֽחָה׃ is taken. lāqaḥ

וַיְהִ֞י And it came to pass, hāyâ כְּהַזְכִּיר֣וֹ׀ when he made mention zākar אֶת of ʾēt אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים of God, ʾĕlōhîm וַיִּפֹּ֣ל that he fell nāpal מֵֽעַל from off ʿal הַ֠כִּסֵּא the seat kissēʾ אֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית backward ʾăḥōrannît בְּעַ֣ד׀ by bĕʿad יַ֣ד the side yād הַשַּׁ֗עַר of the gate, šaʿar וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֤ר brake, šābar מַפְרַקְתּוֹ֙ and his neck mipreqet וַיָּמֹ֔ת and he died: mût כִּֽי for kî זָקֵ֥ן he was an old zāqēn הָאִ֖ישׁ man, ʾîš וְכָבֵ֑ד and heavy. kābēd וְה֛וּא And he hûʾ שָׁפַ֥ט had judged šāpaṭ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אַרְבָּעִ֥ים forty ʾarbāʿîm שָׁנָֽה׃ years. šāne

וְכַלָּת֣וֹ And his daughter in law, kallâ אֵשֶׁת wife, ʾiššâ פִּֽינְחָס֮ Phinehas' pînĕḥās הָרָ֣ה was with child, hāre לָלַת֒ to be delivered: yālad וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע and when she heard šāmaʿ אֶת ʾēt הַשְּׁמוּעָ֔ה the tidings šĕmûʿâ אֶל that ʾēl הִלָּקַח֙ was taken, lāqaḥ אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm וּמֵ֥ת were dead, mût חָמִ֖יהָ and that her father in law ḥām וְאִישָׁ֑הּ and her husband ʾîš וַתִּכְרַ֣ע she bowed herself kāraʿ וַתֵּ֔לֶד and travailed; yālad כִּֽי for kî נֶהֶפְכ֥וּ came hāpak עָלֶ֖יהָ upon her. ʿal צִרֶֽיהָ׃ her pains ṣîr

וּכְעֵ֣ת And about the time ʿēt מוּתָ֗הּ of her death mût וַתְּדַבֵּ֙רְנָה֙ by her said dābar הַנִּצָּב֣וֹת the women that stood nāṣab עָלֶ֔יהָ unto ʿal אַל not; ʾal תִּֽירְאִ֖י her, Fear yārēʾ כִּ֣י for kî בֵ֣ן a son. bēn יָלָ֑דְתְּ thou hast born yālad וְלֹ֥א not, lōʾ עָֽנְתָ֖ה But she answered ʿānâ וְלֹא neither lōʾ שָׁ֥תָה did she regard šît לִבָּֽהּ׃ lēb

וַתִּקְרָ֣א And she named qārāʾ לַנַּ֗עַר the child naʿar אִֽי כָבוֹד֙ Ichabod, ʾî kābôd לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar גָּלָ֥ה is departed gālâ כָב֖וֹד The glory kābôd מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל from Israel: yiśrāʾēl אֶל because ʾēl הִלָּקַח֙ was taken, lāqaḥ אֲר֣וֹן the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm וְאֶל and because ʾēl חָמִ֖יהָ of her father in law ḥām וְאִישָֽׁהּ׃ and her husband. ʾîš

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר And she said, ʾāmar גָּלָ֥ה is departed gālâ כָב֖וֹד The glory kābôd מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל from Israel: yiśrāʾēl כִּ֥י for kî נִלְקַ֖ח is taken. lāqaḥ אֲר֥וֹן the ark ʾārôn הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃ of God ʾĕlōhîm
