וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים Now the Philistines pĕlištî נִלְחָמִ֣ים fought lāḥam בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל against Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַיָּנֻ֜סוּ fled nûs אַנְשֵׁ֤י and the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl מִפְּנֵ֣י from before pānîm פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines, pĕlištî וַיִּפְּל֥וּ and fell down nāpal חֲלָלִ֖ים slain ḥālāl בְּהַ֥ר in mount har הַגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ Gilboa. gilbōaʿ

וַיַּדְבְּק֣וּ followed hard upon dābaq פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים And the Philistines pĕlištî אֶת ʾēt שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl וְאֶת ʾēt בָּנָ֑יו and upon his sons; bēn וַיַּכּ֣וּ slew nākâ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים and the Philistines pĕlištî אֶת ʾēt יְהֽוֹנָתָ֧ן Jonathan, yĕhônātān וְאֶת ʾēt אֲבִֽינָדָ֛ב and Abinadab, ʾăbînādāb וְאֶת ʾēt מַלְכִּישׁ֖וּעַ and Malchi-shua, malkîšûaʿ בְּנֵ֥י sons. bēn שָׁאֽוּל׃ Saul's šāʾûl

וַתִּכְבַּ֤ד went sore kābad הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ And the battle milḥāmâ אֶל against ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַיִּמְצָאֻ֥הוּ hit māṣāʾ הַמּוֹרִ֖ים and the archers yārâ אֲנָשִׁ֣ים ʾĕnôš בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת qešet וַיָּ֥חֶל wounded ḥûl מְאֹ֖ד him; and he was sore mĕʾōd מֵֽהַמּוֹרִֽים׃ of the archers. yārâ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר Then said ʾāmar שָׁאוּל֩ Saul šāʾûl לְנֹשֵׂ֨א unto his armourbearer, nāśāʾ כֵלָ֜יו kĕlî שְׁלֹ֥ף Draw šālap חַרְבְּךָ֣׀ thy sword, ḥereb וְדָקְרֵ֣נִי and thrust me through dāqar בָ֗הּ פֶּן therewith; lest pēn יָ֠בוֹאוּ come bôʾ הָֽעֲרֵלִ֨ים uncircumcised ʿārēl הָאֵ֤לֶּה these ʾēlle וּדְקָרֻ֙נִי֙ and thrust me through, dāqar וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ and abuse ʿālal בִ֔י וְלֹ֤א not; lōʾ אָבָה֙ would ʾābâ נֹשֵׂ֣א me. But his armourbearer nāśāʾ כֵלָ֔יו kĕlî כִּ֥י for kî יָרֵ֖א afraid. yārēʾ מְאֹ֑ד he was sore mĕʾōd וַיִּקַּ֤ח took lāqaḥ שָׁאוּל֙ Therefore Saul šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt הַחֶ֔רֶב a sword, ḥereb וַיִּפֹּ֖ל and fell nāpal עָלֶֽיהָ׃ upon it. ʿal

וַיַּ֥רְא saw rāʾâ נֹשֵֽׂא And when his armourbearer nāśāʾ כֵלָ֖יו kĕlî כִּ֣י that kî מֵ֣ת was dead, mût שָׁא֑וּל Saul šāʾûl וַיִּפֹּ֥ל fell nāpal גַּם likewise gam ה֛וּא he hûʾ עַל upon ʿal חַרְבּ֖וֹ his sword, ḥereb וַיָּ֥מָת and died mût עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him. ʿim

וַיָּ֣מָת died, mût שָׁא֡וּל So Saul šāʾûl וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת and his three šālôš בָּנָיו֩ sons, bēn וְנֹשֵׂ֨א and his armourbearer, nāśāʾ כֵלָ֜יו kĕlî גַּ֧ם and gam כָּל all kōl אֲנָשָׁ֛יו his men, ʾîš בַּיּ֥וֹם day yôm הַה֖וּא that same hûʾ יַחְדָּֽו׃ together. yaḥad

וַיִּרְא֣וּ saw rāʾâ אַנְשֵֽׁי And when the men ʾîš יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בְּעֵ֨בֶר on the other side ʿēber הָעֵ֜מֶק of the valley, ʿēmeq וַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ and that ʾăšer בְּעֵ֣בֶר on the other side ʿēber הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן Jordan, yardēn כִּֽי that kî נָ֙סוּ֙ fled, nûs אַנְשֵׁ֣י the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וְכִי and that kî מֵ֖תוּ were dead, mût שָׁא֣וּל Saul šāʾûl וּבָנָ֑יו and his sons bēn וַיַּֽעַזְב֤וּ they forsook ʿāzab אֶת ʾēt הֶֽעָרִים֙ the cities, ʿîr וַיָּנֻ֔סוּ and fled; nûs וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ came bôʾ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים and the Philistines pĕlištî וַיֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ and dwelt yāšab בָּהֶֽן׃ in them. hēn

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת on the morrow, moḥŏrāt וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ came bôʾ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים when the Philistines pĕlištî לְפַשֵּׁ֖ט to strip pāšaṭ אֶת ʾēt הַֽחֲלָלִ֑ים the slain, ḥālāl וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ that they found māṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt שָׁאוּל֙ Saul šāʾûl וְאֶת ʾēt שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת and his three šālôš בָּנָ֔יו sons bēn נֹֽפְלִ֖ים fallen nāpal בְּהַ֥ר in mount har הַגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ Gilboa. gilbōaʿ

וַֽיִּכְרְתוּ֙ And they cut off kārat אֶת ʾēt רֹאשׁ֔וֹ his head, rōš וַיַּפְשִׁ֖טוּ and stripped off pāšaṭ אֶת ʾēt כֵּלָ֑יו his armour, kĕlî וַיְשַׁלְּח֨וּ and sent šālaḥ בְאֶֽרֶץ into the land ʾereṣ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים of the Philistines pĕlištî סָבִ֗יב round about, sābîb לְבַשֵּׂ֛ר to publish bāśar בֵּ֥ית the house bayit עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֖ם of their idols, ʿāṣāb וְאֶת and among ʾēt הָעָֽם׃ the people. ʿam

וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ And they put śûm אֶת ʾēt כֵּלָ֔יו his armour kĕlî בֵּ֖ית in the house bayit עַשְׁתָּר֑וֹת of Ashtaroth: ʿaštārôt וְאֶת ʾēt גְּוִיָּתוֹ֙ his body gĕwiyyâ תָּֽקְע֔וּ and they fastened tāqaʿ בְּחוֹמַ֖ת to the wall ḥômâ בֵּ֥ית שָֽׁן׃ of Beth-shan. bêt šĕʾān

וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ heard šāmaʿ אֵלָ֔יו ʾēl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֖י And when the inhabitants yāšab יָבֵ֣ישׁ of Jabesh-gilead yābēš גִּלְעָ֑ד gilʿād אֵ֛ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר of that which ʾăšer עָשׂ֥וּ had done ʿāśâ פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים the Philistines pĕlištî לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ to Saul; šāʾûl

וַיָּק֜וּמוּ arose, qûm כָּל All kōl אִ֣ישׁ men ʾîš חַיִל֮ the valiant ḥayil וַיֵּֽלְכ֣וּ and went hālak כָל all kōl הַלַּיְלָה֒ night, layil וַיִּקְח֞וּ and took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt גְּוִיַּ֣ת the body gĕwiyyâ שָׁא֗וּל of Saul šāʾûl וְאֵת֙ ʾēt גְּוִיֹּ֣ת and the bodies gĕwiyyâ בָּנָ֔יו of his sons bēn מֵֽחוֹמַ֖ת from the wall ḥômâ בֵּ֣ית שָׁ֑ן of Beth-shan, bêt šĕʾān וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ and came bôʾ יָבֵ֔שָׁה to Jabesh, yābēš וַיִּשְׂרְפ֥וּ and burnt śārap אֹתָ֖ם ʾēt שָֽׁם׃ them there. šām

וַיִּקְחוּ֙ And they took lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt עַצְמֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם their bones, ʿeṣem וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ and buried qābar תַֽחַת under taḥat הָאֶ֖שֶׁל a tree ʾēšel בְּיָבֵ֑שָׁה at Jabesh, yābēš וַיָּצֻ֖מוּ and fasted ṣûm שִׁבְעַ֥ת seven šebaʿ יָמִֽים׃ days. yôm
