וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִד֙ And David dāwid אֶל in ʾēl לִבּ֔וֹ his heart, lēb עַתָּ֛ה I shall now ʿattâ אֶסָּפֶ֥ה perish sāpâ יוֹם day yôm אֶחָ֖ד one ʾeḥād בְּיַד by the hand yād שָׁא֑וּל of Saul: šāʾûl אֵֽין nothing ʾayin לִ֨י ט֜וֹב better ṭôb כִּ֣י for me than that kî הִמָּלֵ֥ט I should speedily mālaṭ אִמָּלֵ֣ט׀ escape mālaṭ אֶל into ʾēl אֶ֣רֶץ the land ʾereṣ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים of the Philistines; pĕlištî וְנוֹאַ֨שׁ shall despair yāʾaš מִמֶּ֤נִּי of min שָׁאוּל֙ and Saul šāʾûl לְבַקְשֵׁ֤נִי me, to seek bāqaš עוֹד֙ me any more ʿôd בְּכָל in any kōl גְּב֣וּל coast gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel: yiśrāʾēl וְנִמְלַטְתִּ֖י so shall I escape mālaṭ מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ out of his hand. yād

וַיָּ֣קָם arose, qûm דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid וַיַּֽעֲבֹ֣ר passed over ʿābar ה֔וּא and he hûʾ וְשֵׁשׁ with the six šēš מֵא֥וֹת hundred mēʾâ אִ֖ישׁ men ʾîš אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עִמּ֑וֹ with ʿim אֶל him unto ʾēl אָכִ֥ישׁ Achish, ʾăkîš בֶּן the son bēn מָע֖וֹךְ of Maoch, māʿôk מֶ֥לֶךְ king melek גַּֽת׃ of Gath. gat

וַיֵּשֶׁב֩ dwelt yāšab דָּוִ֨ד And David dāwid עִם with ʿim אָכִ֥ישׁ Achish ʾăkîš בְּגַ֛ת at Gath, gat ה֥וּא he hûʾ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֖יו and his men, ʾîš אִ֣ישׁ every man ʾîš וּבֵית֑וֹ with his household, bayit דָּוִד֙ David dāwid וּשְׁתֵּ֣י with his two šĕnayim נָשָׁ֔יו wives, ʾiššâ אֲחִינֹ֙עַם֙ Ahinoam ʾăḥînōʿam הַיִּזְרְעֵאלִ֔ת the Jezreelitess, yizrĕʿēʾlît וַֽאֲבִיגַ֥יִל and Abigail ʾăbîgayil אֵֽשֶׁת wife. ʾiššâ נָבָ֖ל Nabal's nābāl הַֽכַּרְמְלִֽית׃ the Carmelitess, karmĕlît

וַיֻּגַּ֣ד And it was told nāgad לְשָׁא֔וּל Saul šāʾûl כִּֽי that kî בָרַ֥ח was fled bāraḥ דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid גַּ֑ת to Gath: gat וְלֹֽא no lōʾ יָוֹסַ֥ף again for him. yāsap ע֖וֹד more ʿôd לְבַקְשֽׁוֹ׃ and he sought bāqaš

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl אָכִ֗ישׁ Achish, ʾăkîš אִם If ʾim נָא֩ I have now nāʾ מָצָ֨אתִי found māṣāʾ חֵ֤ן grace ḥēn בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ in thine eyes, ʿayin יִתְּנוּ let them give nātan לִ֣י מָק֗וֹם me a place māqôm בְּאַחַ֛ת in some ʾeḥād עָרֵ֥י town ʿîr הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה in the country, śāde וְאֵ֣שְׁבָה that I may dwell yāšab שָּׁ֑ם there: šām וְלָ֨מָּה for why mâ יֵשֵׁ֧ב dwell yāšab עַבְדְּךָ֛ should thy servant ʿebed בְּעִ֥יר city ʿîr הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה in the royal mamlākâ עִמָּֽךְ׃ with thee? ʿim

וַיִּתֶּן gave nātan ל֥וֹ אָכִ֛ישׁ Then Achish ʾăkîš בַּיּ֥וֹם day: yôm הַה֖וּא that hûʾ אֶת him ʾēt צִֽקְלָ֑ג Ziklag ṣiqlag לָכֵ֞ן wherefore kēn הָֽיְתָ֤ה pertaineth hāyâ צִֽקְלַג֙ Ziklag ṣiqlag לְמַלְכֵ֣י unto the kings melek יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah yĕhûdâ עַ֖ד unto ʿad הַיּ֥וֹם day. yôm הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וַֽיְהִי֙ was hāyâ מִסְפַּ֣ר And the time mispār הַיָּמִ֔ים yôm אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer יָשַׁ֥ב dwelt yāšab דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה in the country śāde פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים of the Philistines pĕlištî יָמִ֖ים a full year yôm וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה and four ʾarbaʿ חֳדָשִֽׁים׃ months. ḥōdeš

וַיַּ֤עַל went up, ʿālâ דָּוִד֙ And David dāwid וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֔יו and his men ʾĕnôš וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֛וּ and invaded pāšaṭ אֶל ʾēl הַגְּשׁוּרִ֥י the Geshurites, gĕšûrî וְהַגִּרְזִ֖י and the Gezrites, gizrî וְהָעֲמָֽלֵקִ֑י and the Amalekites: ʿămālēqî כִּ֣י for kî הֵ֜נָּה those hēnnâ יֹֽשְׁב֤וֹת the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ of the land, ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer מֵֽעוֹלָ֔ם of old ʿôlām בּֽוֹאֲךָ֥ as thou goest bôʾ שׁ֖וּרָה to Shur, šûr וְעַד even unto ʿad אֶ֥רֶץ the land ʾereṣ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ of Egypt. miṣrayim

וְהִכָּ֤ה smote nākâ דָוִד֙ And David dāwid אֶת ʾēt הָאָ֔רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וְלֹ֥א and left neither lōʾ יְחַיֶּ֖ה alive, ḥāyâ אִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš וְאִשָּׁ֑ה nor woman ʾiššâ וְלָקַח֩ and took away lāqaḥ צֹ֨אן the sheep, ṣōn וּבָקָ֜ר and the oxen, bāqār וַֽחֲמֹרִ֤ים and the asses, ḥămôr וּגְמַלִּים֙ and the camels, gāmāl וּבְגָדִ֔ים and the apparel, beged וַיָּ֖שָׁב and returned, šûb וַיָּבֹ֥א and came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl אָכִֽישׁ׃ Achish. ʾăkîš

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar אָכִ֔ישׁ And Achish ʾăkîš אַל Whither ʾal פְּשַׁטְתֶּ֖ם have ye made a road pāšaṭ הַיּ֑וֹם to day? yôm וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar דָּוִ֗ד And David dāwid עַל Against ʿal נֶ֤גֶב the south negeb יְהוּדָה֙ of Judah, yĕhûdâ וְעַל and against ʿal נֶ֣גֶב the south negeb הַיַּרְחְמְאֵלִ֔י of the Jerahmeelites, yĕraḥmĕʾēlî וְאֶל and against ʾēl נֶ֖גֶב the south negeb הַקֵּינִֽי׃ of the Kenites. qênî

וְאִ֨ישׁ man ʾîš וְאִשָּׁ֜ה nor woman ʾiššâ לֹֽא neither lōʾ יְחַיֶּ֣ה saved ḥāyâ דָוִ֗ד And David dāwid לְהָבִ֥יא alive, to bring bôʾ גַת֙ to Gath, gat לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar פֶּן Lest pēn יַגִּ֥דוּ they should tell nāgad עָלֵ֖ינוּ on ʿal לֵאמֹ֑ר us, saying, ʾāmar כֹּֽה So kō עָשָׂ֤ה did ʿāśâ דָוִד֙ David, dāwid וְכֹ֣ה and so kō מִשְׁפָּט֔וֹ his manner mišpāṭ כָּל all kōl הַ֨יָּמִ֔ים the while yôm אֲשֶׁ֥ר ʾăšer יָשַׁ֖ב he dwelleth yāšab בִּשְׂדֵ֥ה in the country śāde פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ of the Philistines. pĕlištî

וַיַּֽאֲמֵ֥ן believed ʾāman אָכִ֖ישׁ And Achish ʾăkîš בְּדָוִ֣ד David, dāwid לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הַבְאֵ֤שׁ utterly bāʾaš הִבְאִישׁ֙ to abhor bāʾaš בְּעַמּ֣וֹ He hath made his people ʿam בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וְהָ֥יָה him; therefore he shall be hāyâ לִ֖י לְעֶ֥בֶד my servant ʿebed עוֹלָֽם׃ for ever. ʿôlām
