  1. וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר spake dābar שָׁא֗וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶל to ʾēl יֽוֹנָתָ֤ן Jonathan yônātān בְּנוֹ֙ his son, bēn וְאֶל and to ʾēl כָּל all kōl עֲבָדָ֔יו his servants, ʿebed לְהָמִ֖ית that they should kill mût אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֑ד David. dāwid וִיהֽוֹנָתָן֙ yônātān בֶּן bēn שָׁא֔וּל šāʾûl חָפֵ֥ץ ḥāpēṣ בְּדָוִ֖ד dāwid מְאֹֽד׃ mĕʾōd
  2. וַיַּגֵּ֤ד delighted much in David: and Jonathan told nāgad יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ But Jonathan Saul's son yĕhônātān לְדָוִ֣ד David, dāwid לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar מְבַקֵּ֛שׁ seeketh bāqaš שָׁא֥וּל Saul šāʾûl אָבִ֖י my father ʾāb לַֽהֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ to kill mût וְעַתָּה֙ thee: now ʿattâ הִשָּֽׁמֶר take heed šāmar נָ֣א therefore, I pray thee, nāʾ בַבֹּ֔קֶר to thyself until the morning, bōqer וְיָֽשַׁבְתָּ֥ and abide yāšab בַסֵּ֖תֶר in a secret sēter וְנַחְבֵּֽאתָ׃ and hide thyself: ḥābāʾ
  3. וַֽאֲנִ֨י And I ʾănî אֵצֵ֜א will go out yāṣāʾ וְעָֽמַדְתִּ֣י and stand ʿāmad לְיַד beside yād אָבִ֗י my father ʾāb בַּשָּׂדֶה֙ in the field śāde אֲשֶׁ֣ר where ʾăšer אַתָּ֣ה thou ʾattâ שָׁ֔ם šām וַֽאֲנִ֕י and I ʾănî אֲדַבֵּ֥ר will commune dābar בְּךָ֖ אֶל with ʾēl אָבִ֑י my father ʾāb וְרָאִ֥יתִי I see, rāʾâ מָ֖ה of thee; and what וְהִגַּ֥דְתִּי that I will tell thee. nāgad לָֽךְ׃
  4. וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר spake dābar יְהֽוֹנָתָ֤ן And Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּדָוִד֙ of David dāwid ט֔וֹב good ṭôb אֶל unto ʾēl שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl אָבִ֑יו his father, ʾāb וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar אֵ֠לָיו unto ʾēl אַל him, Let not ʾal יֶֽחֱטָ֨א sin ḥāṭāʾ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ the king melek בְּעַבְדּ֣וֹ against his servant, ʿebed בְדָוִ֗ד against David; dāwid כִּ֣י because ל֤וֹא he hath not lōʾ חָטָא֙ sinned ḥāṭāʾ לָ֔ךְ וְכִ֥י against thee, and because מַֽעֲשָׂ֖יו his works maʿăśe טוֹב good: ṭôb לְךָ֥ מְאֹֽד׃ to thee-ward very mĕʾōd
  5. וַיָּשֶׂם֩ For he did put śûm אֶת ʾēt נַפְשׁ֨וֹ his life nepeš בְכַפּ֜וֹ in his hand, kap וַיַּ֣ךְ and slew nākâ אֶת ʾēt הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗י the Philistine, pĕlištî וַיַּ֨עַשׂ wrought ʿāśâ יְהוָ֜ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ תְּשׁוּעָ֤ה salvation tĕšûʿâ גְדוֹלָה֙ a great gādôl לְכָל for all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl רָאִ֖יתָ thou sawest rāʾâ וַתִּשְׂמָ֑ח and didst rejoice: śāmaḥ וְלָ֤מָּה wherefore תֶֽחֱטָא֙ then wilt thou sin ḥāṭāʾ בְּדָ֣ם blood, dām נָקִ֔י against innocent nāqî לְהָמִ֥ית to slay mût אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid חִנָּֽם׃ without a cause? ḥinnām
  6. וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע hearkened šāmaʿ שָׁא֖וּל And Saul šāʾûl בְּק֣וֹל unto the voice qôl יְהֽוֹנָתָ֑ן of Jonathan: yĕhônātān וַיִּשָּׁבַ֣ע sware, šābaʿ שָׁא֔וּל and Saul šāʾûl חַי liveth, ḥay יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אִם he shall not ʾim יוּמָֽת׃ be slain. mût
  7. וַיִּקְרָ֤א called qārāʾ יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ And Jonathan yĕhônātān לְדָוִ֔ד David, dāwid וַיַּגֶּד shewed nāgad לוֹ֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן and Jonathan yĕhônātān אֵ֥ת him ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַדְּבָרִ֖ים things. dābār הָאֵ֑לֶּה those ʾēlle וַיָּבֵ֨א brought bôʾ יְהֽוֹנָתָ֤ן And Jonathan yĕhônātān אֶת ʾēt דָּוִד֙ David dāwid אֶל to ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַיְהִ֥י and he was hāyâ לְפָנָ֖יו in his presence, pānîm כְּאֶתְמ֥וֹל as in times past. ʾetmôl שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ šilšôm
  8. וַתּ֥וֹסֶף again: yāsap הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה war milḥāmâ לִֽהְי֑וֹת And there was hāyâ וַיֵּצֵ֨א went out, yāṣāʾ דָוִ֜ד and David dāwid וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם and fought lāḥam בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים with the Philistines, pĕlištî וַיַּ֤ךְ and slew nākâ בָּהֶם֙ מַכָּ֣ה slaughter; makkâ גְדוֹלָ֔ה them with a great gādôl וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ and they fled nûs מִפָּנָֽיו׃ from him. pānîm
  9. וַתְּהִי֩ was hāyâ ר֨וּחַ spirit rûaḥ יְהוָ֤ה׀ from the Lord yĕhōwâ רָעָה֙ And the evil raʿ אֶל upon ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וְהוּא֙ as he hûʾ בְּבֵית֣וֹ in his house bayit יוֹשֵׁ֔ב sat yāšab וַֽחֲנִית֖וֹ with his javelin ḥănît בְּיָד֑וֹ in his hand: yād וְדָוִ֖ד and David dāwid מְנַגֵּ֥ן played nāgan בְּיָֽד׃ with hand. yād
  10. וַיְבַקֵּ֨שׁ sought bāqaš שָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl לְהַכּ֤וֹת to smite nākâ בַּֽחֲנִית֙ with the javelin; ḥănît בְּדָוִ֣ד David dāwid וּבַקִּ֔יר even to the wall qîr וַיִּפְטַר֙ but he slipped away pāṭar מִפְּנֵ֣י presence, pānîm שָׁא֔וּל out of Saul's šāʾûl וַיַּ֥ךְ and he smote nākâ אֶֽת ʾēt הַחֲנִ֖ית the javelin ḥănît בַּקִּ֑יר into the wall: qîr וְדָוִ֛ד and David dāwid נָ֥ס fled, nûs וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט and escaped mālaṭ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה night. layil הֽוּא׃ that hûʾ
  11. וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ also sent šālaḥ שָׁא֨וּל Saul šāʾûl מַלְאָכִ֜ים messengers mălʾok אֶל unto ʾēl בֵּ֤ית house, bayit דָּוִד֙ David's dāwid לְשָׁמְר֔וֹ to watch šāmar וְלַֽהֲמִית֖וֹ him, and to slay mût בַּבֹּ֑קֶר him in the morning: bōqer וַתַּגֵּ֣ד told nāgad לְדָוִ֗ד David's dāwid מִיכַ֤ל and Michal mîkāl אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ wife ʾiššâ לֵאמֹ֔ר him, saying, ʾāmar אִם If ʾim אֵ֨ינְךָ֜ not ʾayin מְמַלֵּ֤ט thou save mālaṭ אֶֽת ʾēt נַפְשְׁךָ֙ thy life nepeš הַלַּ֔יְלָה to night, layil מָחָ֖ר to morrow māḥār אַתָּ֥ה thou ʾattâ מוּמָֽת׃ shalt be slain. mût
  12. וַתֹּ֧רֶד down yārad מִיכַ֛ל So Michal mîkāl אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֖ד let David dāwid בְּעַ֣ד through bĕʿad הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן a window: ḥallôn וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ and he went, hālak וַיִּבְרַ֖ח and fled, bāraḥ וַיִּמָּלֵֽט׃ and escaped. mālaṭ
  13. וַתִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ מִיכַ֜ל And Michal mîkāl אֶת ʾēt הַתְּרָפִ֗ים an image, tĕrāpîm וַתָּ֙שֶׂם֙ and laid śûm אֶל in ʾēl הַמִּטָּ֔ה the bed, miṭṭâ וְאֵת֙ ʾēt כְּבִ֣יר a pillow kĕbîr הָֽעִזִּ֔ים of goats' ʿēz שָׂ֖מָה and put śûm מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֑יו for his bolster, mĕraʾăšâ וַתְּכַ֖ס and covered kāsâ בַּבָּֽגֶד׃ with a cloth. beged
  14. וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח sent šālaḥ שָׁא֛וּל And when Saul šāʾûl מַלְאָכִ֖ים messengers mălʾok לָקַ֣חַת to take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֑ד David, dāwid וַתֹּ֖אמֶר she said, ʾāmar חֹלֶ֥ה sick. ḥālâ הֽוּא׃ He hûʾ
  15. וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח sent šālaḥ שָׁאוּל֙ And Saul šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים the messengers mălʾok לִרְא֥וֹת to see rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֖ד David, dāwid לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הַֽעֲל֨וּ Bring him up ʿālâ אֹת֧וֹ ʾēt בַמִּטָּ֛ה me in the bed, miṭṭâ אֵלַ֖י to ʾēl לַֽהֲמִתֽוֹ׃ that I may slay him. mût
  16. וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ were come in, bôʾ הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים And when the messengers mălʾok וְהִנֵּ֥ה behold, hinnē הַתְּרָפִ֖ים an image tĕrāpîm אֶל in ʾēl הַמִּטָּ֑ה the bed, miṭṭâ וּכְבִ֥יר with a pillow kĕbîr הָֽעִזִּ֖ים of goats' ʿēz מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָֽיו׃ for his bolster. mĕraʾăšâ
  17. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar שָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶל unto ʾēl מִיכַ֗ל Michal, mîkāl לָ֤מָּה Why כָּ֙כָה֙ me kākâ רִמִּיתִ֔נִי hast thou deceived so, rāmâ וַתְּשַׁלְּחִ֥י and sent away šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt אֹֽיְבִ֖י mine enemy, ʾōyēb וַיִּמָּלֵ֑ט that he is escaped? mālaṭ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר answered ʾāmar מִיכַל֙ And Michal mîkāl אֶל ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl הוּא He hûʾ אָמַ֥ר said ʾāmar אֵלַ֛י unto ʾēl שַׁלְּחִ֖נִי me, Let me go; šālaḥ לָמָ֥ה why אֲמִיתֵֽךְ׃ should I kill thee? mût
  18. וְדָוִ֨ד So David dāwid בָּרַ֜ח fled, bāraḥ וַיִּמָּלֵ֗ט and escaped, mālaṭ וַיָּבֹ֤א and came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵל֙ Samuel šĕmûʾēl הָֽרָמָ֔תָה to Ramah, rāmâ וַיַּ֨גֶּד and told nāgad ל֔וֹ אֵ֛ת him ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer עָֽשָׂה had done ʿāśâ ל֖וֹ שָׁא֑וּל Saul šāʾûl וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ went hālak הוּא֙ to him. And he hûʾ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל and Samuel šĕmûʾēl וַיֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ and dwelt yāšab בְּנָוֹיֽת׃ in Naioth. nāwît
  19. וַיֻּגַּ֥ד And it was told nāgad לְשָׁא֖וּל Saul, šāʾûl לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֣ה Behold, hinnē דָוִ֔ד David dāwid בְּנָוֹי֖ת at Naioth nāwît בָּֽרָמָֽה׃ in Ramah. rāmâ
  20. וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ שָׁא֣וּל And Saul šāʾûl מַלְאָכִים֮ messengers mălʾok לָקַ֣חַת to take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִד֒ David: dāwid וַיַּ֗רְא and when they saw rāʾâ אֶֽת ʾēt לַהֲקַ֤ת the company lahăqâ הַנְּבִיאִים֙ of the prophets nābîʾ נִבְּאִ֔ים prophesying, nābāʾ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל and Samuel šĕmûʾēl עֹמֵ֥ד standing ʿāmad נִצָּ֖ב appointed nāṣab עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם over ʿal וַתְּהִ֞י was hāyâ עַֽל upon ʿal מַלְאֲכֵ֤י the messengers mălʾok שָׁאוּל֙ of Saul, šāʾûl ר֣וּחַ them, the Spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּ prophesied. nābāʾ גַּם also gam הֵֽמָּה׃ and they hēm
  21. וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ And when it was told nāgad לְשָׁא֗וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ he sent šālaḥ מַלְאָכִ֣ים messengers, mălʾok אֲחֵרִ֔ים other ʾaḥēr וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּ prophesied nābāʾ גַּם likewise. gam הֵ֑מָּה and they hēm וַיֹּ֣סֶף again yāsap שָׁא֗וּל And Saul šāʾûl וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ sent šālaḥ מַלְאָכִ֣ים messengers mălʾok שְׁלִשִׁ֔ים the third šĕlîšî וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּ prophesied nābāʾ גַּם also. gam הֵֽמָּה׃ time, and they hēm
  22. וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ Then went hālak גַּם also gam ה֜וּא he hûʾ הָֽרָמָ֗תָה to Ramah, rāmâ וַיָּבֹא֙ and came bôʾ עַד to ʿad בּ֤וֹר well bôr הַגָּדוֹל֙ a great gādôl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בַּשֶּׂ֔כוּ in Sechu: śēkû וַיִּשְׁאַ֣ל and he asked šāʾal וַיֹּ֔אמֶר and said, ʾāmar אֵיפֹ֥ה Where ʾêpō שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל Samuel šĕmûʾēl וְדָוִ֑ד and David? dāwid וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And said, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֖ה Behold, hinnē בְּנָוֹי֥ת at Naioth nāwît בָּֽרָמָֽה׃ in Ramah. rāmâ
  23. וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ And he went hālak שָׁ֔ם thither šām אֶל to ʾēl נָוֹי֖ת Naioth nāwît בָּֽרָמָ֑ה in Ramah: rāmâ וַתְּהִי֩ was hāyâ עָלָ֨יו upon ʿal גַּם also, gam ה֜וּא him hûʾ ר֣וּחַ and the Spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִ֗ים of God ʾĕlōhîm וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ and he went yālak הָלוֹךְ֙ on, hālak וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֔א and prophesied, nābāʾ עַד until ʿad בֹּא֖וֹ he came bôʾ בְּנָוֹי֥ת to Naioth nāwît בָּֽרָמָֽה׃ in Ramah. rāmâ
  24. וַיִּפְשַׁ֨ט stripped off pāšaṭ גַּם also, gam ה֜וּא And he hûʾ בְּגָדָ֗יו his clothes beged וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֤א and prophesied nābāʾ גַם in like manner, gam הוּא֙ that hûʾ לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel šĕmûʾēl וַיִּפֹּ֣ל and lay down nāpal עָרֹ֔ם naked ʿārôm כָּל all kōl הַיּ֥וֹם day yôm הַה֖וּא hûʾ וְכָל and all kōl הַלָּ֑יְלָה that night. layil עַל Wherefore ʿal כֵּן֙ kēn יֹֽאמְר֔וּ they say, ʾāmar הֲגַ֥ם also gam שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl בַּנְּבִיאִֽם׃ among the prophets? nābîʾ
