  1. וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass, hāyâ כְּכַלֹּתוֹ֙ when he had made an end kālâ לְדַבֵּ֣ר of speaking dābar אֶל unto ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וְנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ that the soul nepeš יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן of Jonathan yĕhônātān נִקְשְׁרָ֖ה was knit qāšar בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ with the soul nepeš דָּוִ֑ד of David, dāwid וַיֶּֽאֱהָבֵ֥וּ loved ʾāhab יְהֽוֹנָתָ֖ן and Jonathan yĕhônātān כְּנַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ him as his own soul. nepeš
  2. וַיִּקָּחֵ֥הוּ took lāqaḥ שָׁא֖וּל And Saul šāʾûl בַּיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַה֑וּא him that hûʾ וְלֹ֣א lōʾ נְתָנ֔וֹ and would let nātan לָשׁ֖וּב him go no more home šûb בֵּ֥ית house. bayit אָבִֽיו׃ to his father's ʾāb
  3. וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת made kārat יְהֽוֹנָתָ֛ן Then Jonathan yĕhônātān וְדָוִ֖ד and David dāwid בְּרִ֑ית a covenant, bĕrît בְּאַֽהֲבָת֥וֹ because he loved ʾahăbâ אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt כְּנַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ him as his own soul. nepeš
  4. וַיִּתְפַּשֵּׁ֣ט stripped himself pāšaṭ יְהֽוֹנָתָ֗ן And Jonathan yĕhônātān אֶֽת of ʾēt הַמְּעִיל֙ the robe mĕʿîl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָלָ֔יו upon ʿal וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ him, and gave nātan לְדָוִ֑ד it to David, dāwid וּמַדָּ֕יו and his garments, mad וְעַד even to ʿad חַרְבּ֥וֹ his sword, ḥereb וְעַד and to ʿad קַשְׁתּ֖וֹ his bow, qešet וְעַד and to ʿad חֲגֹרֽוֹ׃ his girdle. ḥăgôr
  5. וַיֵּצֵ֨א went out yāṣāʾ דָוִ֜ד And David dāwid בְּכֹל֩ kōl אֲשֶׁ֨ר whithersoever ʾăšer יִשְׁלָחֶ֤נּוּ sent šālaḥ שָׁאוּל֙ Saul šāʾûl יַשְׂכִּ֔יל him, behaved himself wisely: śākal וַיְשִׂמֵ֣הוּ set śûm שָׁא֔וּל and Saul šāʾûl עַ֖ל him over ʿal אַנְשֵׁ֣י the men ʾĕnôš הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה of war, milḥāmâ וַיִּיטַב֙ and he was accepted yāṭab בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin כָל of all kōl הָעָ֔ם the people, ʿam וְגַ֕ם and also gam בְּעֵינֵ֖י in the sight ʿayin עַבְדֵ֥י servants. ʿebed שָׁאֽוּל׃ of Saul's šāʾûl
  6. וַיְהִ֣י And it came to pass hāyâ בְּבוֹאָ֗ם as they came, bôʾ בְּשׁ֤וּב was returned šûb דָּוִד֙ when David dāwid מֵֽהַכּ֣וֹת from the slaughter nākâ אֶת of ʾēt הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י the Philistine, pĕlištî וַתֵּצֶ֨אנָה came out yāṣāʾ הַנָּשִׁ֜ים that the women ʾiššâ מִכָּל of all kōl עָרֵ֤י cities ʿîr יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לָשִׁ֣ור singing šîr וְהַמְּחֹל֔וֹת and dancing, mĕḥōlâ לִקְרַ֖את to meet qirʾâ שָׁא֣וּל Saul, šāʾûl הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ king melek בְּתֻפִּ֥ים with tabrets, tōp בְּשִׂמְחָ֖ה with joy, śimḥâ וּבְשָֽׁלִשִֽׁים׃ and with instruments of musick. šālîš
  7. וַֽתַּעֲנֶ֛ינָה answered ʿānâ הַנָּשִׁ֥ים And the women ʾiššâ הַֽמְשַׂחֲק֖וֹת as they played, śāḥaq וַתֹּאמַ֑רְןָ and said, ʾāmar הִכָּ֤ה hath slain nākâ שָׁאוּל֙ Saul šāʾûl בַּֽאֲלָפָ֔ו his thousands, ʾelep וְדָוִ֖ד and David dāwid בְּרִבְבֹתָֽיו׃ his ten thousands. rĕbābâ
  8. וַיִּ֨חַר wroth, ḥārâ לְשָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl מְאֹ֗ד was very mĕʾōd וַיֵּ֤רַע displeased yāraʿ בְּעֵינָיו֙ ʿayin הַדָּבָ֣ר saying dābār הַזֶּ֔ה and the ze וַיֹּ֗אמֶר him; and he said, ʾāmar נָֽתְנ֤וּ They have ascribed nātan לְדָוִד֙ unto David dāwid רְבָב֔וֹת ten thousands, rĕbābâ וְלִ֥י נָֽתְנ֖וּ and to me they have ascribed nātan הָֽאֲלָפִ֑ים thousands: ʾelep וְע֥וֹד and can he have more ʿôd ל֖וֹ אַ֥ךְ but ʾak הַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ the kingdom? mĕlûkâ
  9. וַיְהִ֥י And hāyâ שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl עֹוֵ֣ן eyed ʿāwan אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֑ד David dāwid מֵֽהַיּ֥וֹם day yôm הַה֖וּא from that hûʾ וָהָֽלְאָה׃ and forward. holʾâ
  10. וַיְהִ֣י And it came to pass hāyâ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת on the morrow, moḥŏrāt וַתִּצְלַ֣ח came ṣālaḥ רוּחַ֩ spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִ֨ים׀ from God ʾĕlōhîm רָעָ֤ה׀ that the evil raʿ אֶל upon ʾēl שָׁאוּל֙ Saul, šāʾûl וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֣א and he prophesied nābāʾ בְתוֹךְ in the midst tāwek הַבַּ֔יִת of the house: bayit וְדָוִ֛ד and David dāwid מְנַגֵּ֥ן played nāgan בְּיָד֖וֹ with his hand, yād כְּי֣וֹם׀ as at other times: yôm בְּי֑וֹם yôm וְהַֽחֲנִ֖ית and a javelin ḥănît בְּיַד hand. yād שָׁאֽוּל׃ in Saul's šāʾûl
  11. וַיָּ֤טֶל cast ṭûl שָׁאוּל֙ And Saul šāʾûl אֶֽת ʾēt הַחֲנִ֔ית the javelin; ḥănît וַיֹּ֕אמֶר for he said, ʾāmar אַכֶּ֥ה I will smite nākâ בְדָוִ֖ד David dāwid וּבַקִּ֑יר even to the wall qîr וַיִּסֹּ֥ב avoided out sābab דָּוִ֛ד And David dāwid מִפָּנָ֖יו of his presence pānîm פַּֽעֲמָֽיִם׃ twice. paʿam
  12. וַיִּרָ֥א was afraid yārēʾ שָׁא֖וּל And Saul šāʾûl מִלִּפְנֵ֣י of pānîm דָוִ֑ד David, dāwid כִּֽי because הָיָ֤ה was hāyâ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ עִמּ֔וֹ with ʿim וּמֵעִ֥ם ʿim שָׁא֖וּל from Saul. šāʾûl סָֽר׃ him, and was departed sûr
  13. וַיְסִרֵ֤הוּ removed sûr שָׁאוּל֙ Therefore Saul šāʾûl מֵֽעִמּ֔וֹ him from ʿim וַיְשִׂמֵ֥הוּ him, and made śûm ל֖וֹ שַׂר him his captain śar אָ֑לֶף over a thousand; ʾelep וַיֵּצֵ֥א and he went out yāṣāʾ וַיָּבֹ֖א and came in bôʾ לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm הָעָֽם׃ the people. ʿam
  14. וַיְהִ֥י hāyâ דָוִ֛ד And David dāwid לְכָל in all kōl דָּרְכָ֖ו his ways; derek מַשְׂכִּ֑יל behaved himself wisely śākal וַֽיהוָ֖ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him. ʿim
  15. וַיַּ֣רְא saw rāʾâ שָׁא֔וּל Wherefore when Saul šāʾûl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer ה֖וּא he hûʾ מַשְׂכִּ֣יל behaved himself śākal מְאֹ֑ד very mĕʾōd וַיָּ֖גָר wisely, he was afraid gûr מִפָּנָֽיו׃ of him. pānîm
  16. וְכָל But all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Israel yiśrāʾēl וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה and Judah yĕhûdâ אֹהֵ֖ב loved ʾāhab אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֑ד David, dāwid כִּי because ה֛וּא he hûʾ יוֹצֵ֥א went out yāṣāʾ וָבָ֖א and came in bôʾ לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ before them. pānîm
  17. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar שָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִ֗ד David, dāwid הִנֵּה֩ Behold hinnē בִתִּ֨י daughter bat הַגְּדוֹלָ֤ה my elder gādôl מֵרַב֙ Merab, mērāb אֹתָהּ֙ ʾēt אֶתֶּן her will I give nātan לְךָ֣ לְאִשָּׁ֔ה thee to wife: ʾiššâ אַ֚ךְ only ʾak הֱיֵה be hāyâ לִּ֣י לְבֶן thou valiant bēn חַ֔יִל ḥayil וְהִלָּחֵ֖ם for me, and fight lāḥam מִלְחֲמ֣וֹת battles. milḥāmâ יְהוָ֑ה the Lord's yĕhōwâ וְשָׁא֣וּל For Saul šāʾûl אָמַ֗ר said, ʾāmar אַל Let not ʾal תְּהִ֤י be hāyâ יָדִי֙ mine hand yād בּ֔וֹ וּתְהִי be upon him. hāyâ ב֖וֹ יַד upon him, but let the hand yād פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ of the Philistines pĕlištî
  18. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl שָׁא֗וּל Saul, šāʾûl מִ֤י Who אָֽנֹכִי֙ I? ʾānōkî וּמִ֣י and what חַיַּ֔י my life, ḥay מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת family mišpāḥâ אָבִ֖י my father's ʾāb בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל in Israel, yiśrāʾēl כִּֽי that אֶהְיֶ֥ה I should be hāyâ חָתָ֖ן son in law ḥātān לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ to the king? melek
  19. וַיְהִ֗י But it came to pass hāyâ בְּעֵ֥ת at the time ʿēt תֵּ֛ת should have been given nātan אֶת when ʾēt מֵרַ֥ב Merab mērāb בַּת daughter bat שָׁא֖וּל Saul's šāʾûl לְדָוִ֑ד to David, dāwid וְהִ֧יא that she hûʾ נִתְּנָ֛ה was given nātan לְעַדְרִיאֵ֥ל unto Adriel ʿadrîʾēl הַמְּחֹֽלָתִ֖י the Meholathite mĕḥōlātî לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ to wife. ʾiššâ
  20. וַתֶּֽאֱהַ֛ב loved ʾāhab מִיכַ֥ל And Michal mîkāl בַּת daughter bat שָׁא֖וּל Saul's šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֑ד David: dāwid וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ and they told nāgad לְשָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַיִּשַׁ֥ר pleased yāšar הַדָּבָ֖ר and the thing dābār בְּעֵינָֽיו׃ him. ʿayin
  21. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said, ʾāmar שָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶתְּנֶ֤נָּה I will give nātan לּוֹ֙ וּתְהִי him her, that she may be hāyâ ל֣וֹ לְמוֹקֵ֔שׁ a snare môqēš וּתְהִי may be hāyâ ב֖וֹ יַד to him, and that the hand yād פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים of the Philistines pĕlištî וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar שָׁאוּל֙ against him. Wherefore Saul šāʾûl אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִ֔ד David, dāwid בִּשְׁתַּ֛יִם in the twain. šĕnayim תִּתְחַתֵּ֥ן be my son in law ḥātan בִּ֖י הַיּֽוֹם׃ Thou shalt this day yôm
  22. וַיְצַ֨ו commanded ṣāwâ שָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt עֲבָדָ֗ו his servants, ʿebed דַּבְּר֨וּ Commune dābar אֶל with ʾēl דָּוִ֤ד David dāwid בַּלָּט֙ secretly, lāṭ לֵאמֹ֔ר and say, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֨ה Behold, hinnē חָפֵ֤ץ hath delight ḥāpēṣ בְּךָ֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king melek וְכָל in thee, and all kōl עֲבָדָ֖יו his servants ʿebed אֲהֵב֑וּךָ love ʾāhab וְעַתָּ֖ה thee: now ʿattâ הִתְחַתֵּ֥ן son in law. ḥātan בַּמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ therefore be the king's melek
  23. וַֽיְדַבְּר֞וּ spake dābar עַבְדֵ֤י servants ʿebed שָׁאוּל֙ And Saul's šāʾûl בְּאָזְנֵ֣י in the ears ʾōzen דָוִ֔ד of David. dāwid אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֖ים words dābār הָאֵ֑לֶּה those ʾēlle וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar דָּוִ֗ד And David dāwid הַֽנְקַלָּ֤ה it to you light qālal בְעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ Seemeth ʿayin הִתְחַתֵּ֣ן son in law, ḥātan בַּמֶּ֔לֶךְ to be a king's melek וְאָֽנֹכִ֖י seeing that I ʾānōkî אִֽישׁ man, ʾîš רָ֥שׁ a poor rûš וְנִקְלֶֽה׃ and lightly esteemed? qālâ
  24. וַיַּגִּ֜דוּ told nāgad עַבְדֵ֥י And the servants ʿebed שָׁא֛וּל of Saul šāʾûl ל֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר him, saying, ʾāmar כַּדְּבָרִ֥ים manner dābār הָאֵ֖לֶּה On this ʾēlle דִּבֶּ֥ר spake dābar דָּוִֽד׃ David. dāwid
  25. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said, ʾāmar שָׁא֜וּל And Saul šāʾûl כֹּֽה Thus תֹאמְר֣וּ shall ye say ʾāmar לְדָוִ֗ד to David, dāwid אֵֽין not ʾayin חֵ֤פֶץ desireth ḥēpeṣ לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ The king melek בְּמֹ֔הַר any dowry, mōhar כִּ֗י but בְּמֵאָה֙ an hundred mēʾâ עָרְל֣וֹת foreskins ʿorlâ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים of the Philistines, pĕlištî לְהִנָּקֵ֖ם to be avenged nāqam בְּאֹֽיְבֵ֣י enemies. ʾōyēb הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ of the king's melek וְשָׁא֣וּל But Saul šāʾûl חָשַׁ֔ב thought ḥāšab לְהַפִּ֥יל fall nāpal אֶת to make ʾēt דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid בְּיַד by the hand yād פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ of the Philistines. pĕlištî
  26. וַיַּגִּ֨דוּ told nāgad עֲבָדָ֤יו And when his servants ʿebed לְדָוִד֙ David dāwid אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֣ים words, dābār הָאֵ֔לֶּה these ʾēlle וַיִּשַׁ֤ר yāšar הַדָּבָר֙ it pleased dābār בְּעֵינֵ֣י ʿayin דָוִ֔ד David dāwid לְהִתְחַתֵּ֖ן son in law: ḥātan בַּמֶּ֑לֶךְ well to be the king's melek וְלֹ֥א were not lōʾ מָֽלְא֖וּ expired. mālēʾ הַיָּמִֽים׃ and the days yôm
  27. וַיָּ֨קָם arose qûm דָּוִ֜ד Wherefore David dāwid וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ׀ and went, hālak ה֣וּא he hûʾ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֗יו and his men, ʾîš וַיַּ֣ךְ and slew nākâ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים֮ of the Philistines pĕlištî מָאתַ֣יִם two hundred mēʾâ אִישׁ֒ men; ʾîš וַיָּבֵ֤א brought bôʾ דָוִד֙ and David dāwid אֶת ʾēt עָרְלֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם their foreskins, ʿorlâ וַיְמַלְא֣וּם and they gave them in full tale mālēʾ לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ to the king, melek לְהִתְחַתֵּ֖ן son in law. ḥātan בַּמֶּ֑לֶךְ that he might be the king's melek וַיִּתֶּן gave nātan ל֥וֹ שָׁא֛וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶת him ʾēt מִיכַ֥ל Michal mîkāl בִּתּ֖וֹ his daughter bat לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ to wife. ʾiššâ
  28. וַיַּ֤רְא saw rāʾâ שָׁאוּל֙ And Saul šāʾûl וַיֵּ֔דַע and knew yādaʿ כִּ֥י that יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ עִם with ʿim דָּוִ֑ד David, dāwid וּמִיכַ֥ל and Michal mîkāl בַּת daughter bat שָׁא֖וּל Saul's šāʾûl אֲהֵבַֽתְהוּ׃ loved him. ʾāhab
  29. וַיֹּ֣אסֶף the more yāsap שָׁא֗וּל And Saul šāʾûl לֵרֹ֛א afraid yārēʾ מִפְּנֵ֥י of pānîm דָוִ֖ד David; dāwid ע֑וֹד was yet ʿôd וַיְהִ֥י became hāyâ שָׁא֛וּל and Saul šāʾûl אֹיֵ֥ב enemy ʾōyēb אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֖ד David's dāwid כָּל kōl הַיָּמִֽים׃ continually. yôm
  30. וַיֵּֽצְא֖וּ went forth: yāṣāʾ שָׂרֵ֣י Then the princes śar פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים of the Philistines pĕlištî וַיְהִ֣י׀ and it came to pass, hāyâ מִדֵּ֣י after day צֵאתָ֗ם they went forth, yāṣāʾ שָׂכַ֤ל behaved himself more wisely śākal דָּוִד֙ David dāwid מִכֹּל֙ than all kōl עַבְדֵ֣י the servants ʿebed שָׁא֔וּל of Saul; šāʾûl וַיִּיקַ֥ר set by. yāqar שְׁמ֖וֹ so that his name šēm מְאֹֽד׃ was much mĕʾōd
