וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֜ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl עַד How long ʿad מָתַי֙ mātay אַתָּה֙ wilt thou ʾattâ מִתְאַבֵּ֣ל mourn ʾābal אֶל for ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַֽאֲנִ֣י seeing I ʾănî מְאַסְתִּ֔יו have rejected māʾas מִמְּלֹ֖ךְ him from reigning mālak עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel? yiśrāʾēl מַלֵּ֨א fill mālēʾ קַרְנְךָ֜ thine horn qeren שֶׁ֗מֶן with oil, šemen וְלֵ֤ךְ and go, hālak אֶֽשְׁלָחֲךָ֙ I will send šālaḥ אֶל thee to ʾēl יִשַׁ֣י Jesse yišay בֵּֽית הַלַּחְמִ֔י the Bethlehemite: bêt hallaḥmî כִּֽי for kî רָאִ֧יתִי I have provided rāʾâ בְּבָנָ֛יו among his sons. bēn לִ֖י מֶֽלֶךְ׃ me a king melek

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said, ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֵ֣יךְ How ʾêk אֵלֵ֔ךְ can I go? hālak וְשָׁמַ֥ע hear šāmaʿ שָׁא֖וּל if Saul šāʾûl וַֽהֲרָגָ֑נִי he will kill hārag וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar יְהוָ֗ה me. And the Lord yĕhōwâ עֶגְלַ֤ת ʿeglâ בָּקָר֙ an heifer bāqār תִּקַּ֣ח Take lāqaḥ בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ with thee, yād וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ and say, ʾāmar לִזְבֹּ֥חַ to sacrifice zābaḥ לַֽיהוָ֖ה to the Lord. yĕhōwâ בָּֽאתִי׃ I am come bôʾ

וְקָרָ֥אתָ And call qārāʾ לְיִשַׁ֖י Jesse yišay בַּזָּ֑בַח to the sacrifice, zebaḥ וְאָֽנֹכִ֗י and I ʾānōkî אוֹדִֽיעֲךָ֙ will shew yādaʿ אֵ֣ת thee ʾēt אֲשֶֽׁר what ʾăšer תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה thou shalt do: ʿāśâ וּמָֽשַׁחְתָּ֣ and thou shalt anoint māšaḥ לִ֔י אֵ֥ת unto me ʾēt אֲשֶׁר whom ʾăšer אֹמַ֖ר I name ʾāmar אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ unto thee. ʾēl

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ did ʿāśâ שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֵ֚ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁ֣ר that which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֣ר spake, dābar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיָּבֹ֖א and came bôʾ בֵּ֣ית לָ֑חֶם to Bethlehem. bêt leḥem וַיֶּֽחֶרְד֞וּ trembled ḥārad זִקְנֵ֤י And the elders zāqēn הָעִיר֙ of the town ʿîr לִקְרָאת֔וֹ at his coming, qārāʾ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar שָׁלֹ֥ם thou peaceably? šālôm בּוֹאֶֽךָ׃ Comest bôʾ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ And he said, ʾāmar שָׁל֗וֹם Peaceably: šālôm לִזְבֹּ֤חַ to sacrifice zābaḥ לַֽיהוָה֙ unto the Lord: yĕhōwâ בָּ֔אתִי I am come bôʾ הִֽתְקַדְּשׁ֔וּ sanctify yourselves, qādaš וּבָאתֶ֥ם and come bôʾ אִתִּ֖י with ʾēt בַּזָּ֑בַח me to the sacrifice. zebaḥ וַיְקַדֵּ֤שׁ And he sanctified qādaš אֶת ʾēt יִשַׁי֙ Jesse yišay וְאֶת ʾēt בָּנָ֔יו and his sons, bēn וַיִּקְרָ֥א and called qārāʾ לָהֶ֖ם לַזָּֽבַח׃ them to the sacrifice. zebaḥ

וַיְהִ֣י And it came to pass, hāyâ בְּבוֹאָ֔ם when they were come, bôʾ וַיַּ֖רְא that he looked on rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt אֱלִיאָ֑ב Eliab, ʾĕlîʾāb וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and said, ʾāmar אַ֛ךְ Surely ʾak נֶ֥גֶד before him. neged יְהוָ֖ה the Lord's yĕhōwâ מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃ anointed māšîaḥ

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֜ה But the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl אַל not ʾal תַּבֵּ֧ט Look nābaṭ אֶל on ʾēl מַרְאֵ֛הוּ his countenance, marʾe וְאֶל or on ʾēl גְּבֹ֥הַּ the height gābōah קֽוֹמָת֖וֹ of his stature; qômâ כִּ֣י because kî מְאַסְתִּ֑יהוּ I have refused māʾas כִּ֣י׀ him: for kî לֹ֗א not lōʾ אֲשֶׁ֤ר as ʾăšer יִרְאֶה֙ seeth; rāʾâ הָֽאָדָ֔ם man ʾādām כִּ֤י for kî הָֽאָדָם֙ man ʾādām יִרְאֶ֣ה looketh rāʾâ לַעֵינַ֔יִם on the outward appearance, ʿayin וַֽיהוָ֖ה but the Lord yĕhōwâ יִרְאֶ֥ה looketh rāʾâ לַלֵּבָֽב׃ on the heart. lēbāb

וַיִּקְרָ֤א called qārāʾ יִשַׁי֙ Then Jesse yišay אֶל ʾēl אֲבִ֣ינָדָ֔ב Abinadab, ʾăbînādāb וַיַּֽעֲבִרֵ֖הוּ and made him pass ʿābar לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Samuel. šĕmûʾēl וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar גַּם Neither gam בָּזֶ֖ה this. ze לֹֽא lōʾ בָחַ֥ר chosen bāḥar יְהוָֽה׃ hath the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיַּֽעֲבֵ֥ר to pass by. ʿābar יִשַׁ֖י Then Jesse yišay שַׁמָּ֑ה made Shammah šammâ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar גַּם Neither gam בָּזֶ֖ה this. ze לֹֽא lōʾ בָחַ֥ר chosen bāḥar יְהוָֽה׃ hath the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיַּֽעֲבֵ֥ר to pass ʿābar יִשַׁ֛י Again, Jesse yišay שִׁבְעַ֥ת made seven šebaʿ בָּנָ֖יו of his sons bēn לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל Samuel. šĕmûʾēl וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵל֙ And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יִשַׁ֔י Jesse, yišay לֹֽא hath not lōʾ בָחַ֥ר chosen bāḥar יְהוָ֖ה The Lord yĕhōwâ בָּאֵֽלֶּה׃ these. ʾēlle

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יִשַׁי֮ Jesse, yišay הֲתַ֣מּוּ Are here all tāmam הַנְּעָרִים֒ children? naʿar וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar ע֚וֹד yet ʿôd שָׁאַ֣ר There remaineth šāʾar הַקָּטָ֔ן the youngest, qāṭān וְהִנֵּ֥ה and, behold, hinnē רֹעֶ֖ה he keepeth rāʿâ בַּצֹּ֑אן the sheep. ṣōn וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל And Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl יִשַׁי֙ Jesse, yišay שִׁלְחָ֣ה Send šālaḥ וְקָחֶ֔נּוּ and fetch lāqaḥ כִּ֥י him: for kî לֹֽא we will not lōʾ נָסֹ֖ב sit down sābab עַד till ʿad בֹּא֥וֹ he come bôʾ פֹֽה׃ hither. pō

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח And he sent, šālaḥ וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ and brought in. bôʾ וְה֣וּא him Now he hûʾ אַדְמוֹנִ֔י ruddy, ʾadmōnî עִם withal ʿim יְפֵ֥ה of a beautiful yāpe עֵינַ֖יִם countenance, ʿayin וְט֣וֹב and goodly ṭôb רֹ֑אִי to look to. rŏʾî וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said, ʾāmar יְהוָ֛ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ ק֥וּם Arise, qûm מְשָׁחֵ֖הוּ anoint māšaḥ כִּי him: for kî זֶ֥ה this ze הֽוּא׃ he. hûʾ

וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל Then Samuel šĕmûʾēl אֶת ʾēt קֶ֣רֶן the horn qeren הַשֶּׁ֗מֶן of oil, šemen וַיִּמְשַׁ֣ח and anointed māšaḥ אֹתוֹ֮ ʾēt בְּקֶ֣רֶב him in the midst qereb אֶחָיו֒ of his brethren: ʾāḥ וַתִּצְלַ֤ח came ṣālaḥ רֽוּחַ and the Spirit rûaḥ יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל upon ʾēl דָּוִ֔ד David dāwid מֵֽהַיּ֥וֹם from that day yôm הַה֖וּא hûʾ וָמָ֑עְלָה forward. maʿal וַיָּ֣קָם rose up, qûm שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל So Samuel šĕmûʾēl וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ and went hālak הָֽרָמָֽתָה׃ to Ramah. rāmâ

וְר֧וּחַ But the Spirit rûaḥ יְהוָ֛ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ סָ֖רָה departed sûr מֵעִ֣ם from ʿim שָׁא֑וּל Saul, šāʾûl וּבִֽעֲתַ֥תּוּ troubled him. bāʿat רֽוּחַ spirit rûaḥ רָעָ֖ה and an evil raʿ מֵאֵ֥ת from ʾēt יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּֽאמְר֥וּ said ʾāmar עַבְדֵֽי servants ʿebed שָׁא֖וּל And Saul's šāʾûl אֵלָ֑יו unto ʾēl הִנֵּה him, Behold hinnē נָ֧א now, nāʾ רֽוּחַ spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִ֛ים from God ʾĕlōhîm רָעָ֖ה an evil raʿ מְבַֽעִתֶּֽךָ׃ troubleth thee. bāʿat

יֹֽאמַר command ʾāmar נָ֤א now nāʾ אֲדֹנֵ֙נוּ֙ Let our lord ʾādôn עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ thy servants, ʿebed לְפָנֶ֔יךָ before pānîm יְבַקְשׁ֕וּ thee, to seek out bāqaš אִ֕ישׁ a man, ʾîš יֹדֵ֖עַ a cunning yādaʿ מְנַגֵּ֣ן player nāgan בַּכִּנּ֑וֹר on an harp: kinnôr וְהָיָ֗ה and it shall come to pass, hāyâ בִּֽהְי֨וֹת when hāyâ עָלֶ֤יךָ is upon ʿal רֽוּחַ spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִים֙ from God ʾĕlōhîm רָעָ֔ה the evil raʿ וְנִגֵּ֥ן thee, that he shall play nāgan בְּיָד֖וֹ with his hand, yād וְט֥וֹב and thou shalt be well. ṭôb לָֽךְ׃

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar שָׁא֖וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶל unto ʾēl עֲבָדָ֑יו his servants, ʿebed רְאוּ Provide rāʾâ נָ֣א me now nāʾ לִ֗י אִ֚ישׁ a man ʾîš מֵיטִ֣יב well, yāṭab לְנַגֵּ֔ן that can play nāgan וַהֲבִֽיאוֹתֶ֖ם and bring bôʾ אֵלָֽי׃ to me. ʾēl

וַיַּעַן֩ Then answered ʿānâ אֶחָ֨ד one ʾeḥād מֵֽהַנְּעָרִ֜ים of the servants, naʿar וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֨ה Behold, hinnē רָאִ֜יתִי I have seen rāʾâ בֵּ֣ן a son bēn לְיִשַׁי֮ of Jesse yišay בֵּ֣ית הַלַּחְמִי֒ the Bethlehemite, bêt hallaḥmî יֹדֵ֣עַ cunning yādaʿ נַ֠גֵּן in playing, nāgan וְגִבּ֨וֹר and a mighty gibbôr חַ֜יִל valiant man, ḥayil וְאִ֧ישׁ and a man ʾîš מִלְחָמָ֛ה of war, milḥāmâ וּנְב֥וֹן and prudent bîn דָּבָ֖ר in matters, dābār וְאִ֣ישׁ person, ʾîš תֹּ֑אַר and a comely tōʾar וַֽיהוָ֖ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him. ʿim

וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח sent šālaḥ שָׁא֛וּל Wherefore Saul šāʾûl מַלְאָכִ֖ים messengers mălʾok אֶל unto ʾēl יִשָׁ֑י Jesse, yišay וַיֹּ֕אמֶר and said, ʾāmar שִׁלְחָ֥ה Send šālaḥ אֵלַ֛י ʾēl אֶת me ʾēt דָּוִ֥ד David dāwid בִּנְךָ֖ thy son, bēn אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer בַּצֹּֽאן׃ with the sheep. ṣōn

וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ יִשַׁ֜י And Jesse yišay חֲמ֥וֹר an ass ḥămôr לֶ֙חֶם֙ with bread, leḥem וְנֹ֣אד and a bottle nōd יַ֔יִן of wine, yayin וּגְדִ֥י kid, gĕdî עִזִּ֖ים ʿēz אֶחָ֑ד and a ʾeḥād וַיִּשְׁלַ֛ח and sent šālaḥ בְּיַד by yād דָּוִ֥ד David dāwid בְּנ֖וֹ his son bēn אֶל unto ʾēl שָׁאֽוּל׃ Saul. šāʾûl

וַיָּבֹ֤א came bôʾ דָוִד֙ And David dāwid אֶל to ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד and stood ʿāmad לְפָנָ֑יו before pānîm וַיֶּֽאֱהָבֵ֣הֽוּ him: and he loved ʾāhab מְאֹ֔ד him greatly; mĕʾōd וַֽיְהִי and he became hāyâ ל֖וֹ נֹשֵׂ֥א his armourbearer. nāśāʾ כֵלִֽים׃ kĕlî

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח sent šālaḥ שָׁא֔וּל And Saul šāʾûl אֶל to ʾēl יִשַׁ֖י Jesse, yišay לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar יַֽעֲמָד stand ʿāmad נָ֤א I pray thee, nāʾ דָוִד֙ Let David, dāwid לְפָנַ֔י before pānîm כִּֽי me; for kî מָ֥צָא he hath found māṣāʾ חֵ֖ן favour ḥēn בְּעֵינָֽי׃ in my sight. ʿayin

וְהָיָ֗ה And it came to pass, hāyâ בִּֽהְי֤וֹת when hāyâ רֽוּחַ the spirit rûaḥ אֱלֹהִים֙ from God ʾĕlōhîm אֶל was upon ʾēl שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וְלָקַ֥ח took lāqaḥ דָּוִ֛ד that David dāwid אֶת ʾēt הַכִּנּ֖וֹר an harp, kinnôr וְנִגֵּ֣ן and played nāgan בְּיָד֑וֹ with his hand: yād וְרָוַ֤ח was refreshed, rāwaḥ לְשָׁאוּל֙ so Saul šāʾûl וְט֣וֹב and was well, ṭôb ל֔וֹ וְסָ֥רָה departed sûr מֵֽעָלָ֖יו from him. ʿal ר֥וּחַ spirit rûaḥ הָֽרָעָֽה׃ and the evil raʿ
