וַיְהִי֩ Now there was hāyâ אִ֨ישׁ man ʾîš אֶחָ֜ד a certain ʾeḥād מִן of min הָרָֽמָתַ֛יִם צוֹפִ֖ים Ramathaim-zophim, rāmātayim ṣôpîm מֵהַ֣ר of mount har אֶפְרָ֑יִם Ephraim, ʾeprayim וּשְׁמ֡וֹ and his name šēm אֶ֠לְקָנָה Elkanah, ʾelqānâ בֶּן the son bēn יְרֹחָ֧ם of Jeroham, yĕrōḥām בֶּן the son bēn אֱלִיה֛וּא of Elihu, ʾĕlîhû בֶּן the son bēn תֹּ֥חוּ of Tohu, tōḥû בֶן the son bēn צ֖וּף of Zuph, ṣûp אֶפְרָתִֽי׃ an Ephrathite: ʾeprātî

וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י And he had two šĕnayim נָשִׁ֔ים wives; ʾiššâ שֵׁ֤ם the name šēm אַחַת֙ of the one ʾeḥād חַנָּ֔ה Hannah, ḥannâ וְשֵׁ֥ם and the name šēm הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית of the other šēnî פְּנִנָּ֑ה Peninnah: pĕninnâ וַיְהִ֤י had hāyâ לִפְנִנָּה֙ and Peninnah pĕninnâ יְלָדִ֔ים children, yeled וּלְחַנָּ֖ה but Hannah ḥannâ אֵ֥ין had no ʾayin יְלָדִֽים׃ children. yeled

וְעָלָה֩ went up ʿālâ הָאִ֨ישׁ man ʾîš הַה֤וּא And this hûʾ מֵֽעִירוֹ֙ out of his city ʿîr מִיָּמִ֣ים׀ yearly yôm יָמִ֔ימָה yôm לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֹ֧ת to worship šāḥâ וְלִזְבֹּ֛חַ and to sacrifice zābaḥ לַֽיהוָ֥ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ בְּשִׁלֹ֑ה in Shiloh. šîlō וְשָׁ֞ם there. šām שְׁנֵ֣י And the two šĕnayim בְנֵֽי sons bēn עֵלִ֗י of Eli, ʿēlî חָפְנִי֙ Hophni ḥopnî וּפִ֣נְחָ֔ס and Phinehas, pînĕḥās כֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים the priests kōhēn לַֽיהוָֽה׃ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ

וַיְהִ֣י was hāyâ הַיּ֔וֹם And when the time yôm וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח offered, zābaḥ אֶלְקָנָ֑ה that Elkanah ʾelqānâ וְנָתַ֞ן he gave nātan לִפְנִנָּ֣ה to Peninnah pĕninnâ אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ his wife, ʾiššâ וּֽלְכָל and to all kōl בָּנֶ֛יהָ her sons bēn וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ and her daughters, bat מָנֽוֹת׃ portions: mānâ

וּלְחַנָּ֕ה But unto Hannah ḥannâ יִתֵּ֛ן he gave nātan מָנָ֥ה portion; mānâ אַחַ֖ת a ʾeḥād אַפָּ֑יִם worthy ʾap כִּ֤י for kî אֶת ʾēt חַנָּה֙ Hannah: ḥannâ אָהֵ֔ב he loved ʾāhab וַֽיהוָ֖ה but the Lord yĕhōwâ סָגַ֥ר had shut up sāgar רַחְמָֽהּ׃ her womb. reḥem

וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה provoked kaʿas צָֽרָתָהּ֙ And her adversary ṣārâ גַּם also gam כַּ֔עַס her sore, kaʿas בַּֽעֲב֖וּר for to ʿābûr הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ make her fret, rāʿam כִּֽי because kî סָגַ֥ר had shut sāgar יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּעַ֥ד up bĕʿad רַחְמָֽהּ׃ her womb. reḥem

וְכֵ֨ן so kēn יַֽעֲשֶׂ֜ה And he did ʿāśâ שָׁנָ֣ה year šāne בְשָׁנָ֗ה by year, šāne מִדֵּ֤י when day עֲלֹתָהּ֙ she went up ʿālâ בְּבֵ֣ית to the house bayit יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ כֵּ֖ן so kēn תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה she provoked kaʿas וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה her; therefore she wept, bākâ וְלֹ֥א and did not lōʾ תֹאכַֽל׃ eat. ʾākal

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר Then said ʾāmar לָ֜הּ אֶלְקָנָ֣ה Elkanah ʾelqānâ אִישָׁ֗הּ her husband ʾîš חַנָּה֙ to her, Hannah, ḥannâ לָ֣מֶה why mâ תִבְכִּ֗י weepest bākâ וְלָ֙מֶה֙ thou? and why mâ לֹ֣א thou not? lōʾ תֹֽאכְלִ֔י eatest ʾākal וְלָ֖מֶה and why mâ יֵרַ֣ע grieved? yāraʿ לְבָבֵ֑ךְ is thy heart lēbāb הֲל֤וֹא not lōʾ אָֽנֹכִי֙ I ʾānōkî ט֣וֹב better ṭôb לָ֔ךְ מֵֽעֲשָׂרָ֖ה to thee than ten ʿeśer בָּנִֽים׃ sons? bēn

וַתָּ֣קָם rose up qûm חַנָּ֔ה So Hannah ḥannâ אַֽחֲרֵ֛י after ʾaḥar אָכְלָ֥ה they had eaten ʾākal בְשִׁלֹ֖ה in Shiloh, šîlō וְאַֽחֲרֵ֣י and after ʾaḥar שָׁתֹ֑ה they had drunk. šātâ וְעֵלִ֣י Now Eli ʿēlî הַכֹּהֵ֗ן the priest kōhēn יֹשֵׁב֙ sat yāšab עַל upon ʿal הַכִּסֵּ֔א a seat kissēʾ עַל by ʿal מְזוּזַ֖ת a post mĕzûzâ הֵיכַ֥ל of the temple hêkāl יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וְהִ֖יא And she hûʾ מָ֣רַת in bitterness mar נָ֑פֶשׁ of soul, nepeš וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל and prayed pālal עַל unto ʿal יְהוָ֖ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וּבָכֹ֥ה and wept bākâ תִבְכֶּֽה׃ sore. bākâ

וַתִּדֹּ֨ר And she vowed nādar נֶ֜דֶר a vow, neder וַתֹּאמַ֗ר and said, ʾāmar יְהוָ֨ה O Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֜וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ אִם if ʾim רָאֹ֥ה thou wilt indeed rāʾâ תִרְאֶ֣ה׀ look rāʾâ בָּֽעֳנִ֣י on the affliction ʿŏnî אֲמָתֶ֗ךָ of thine handmaid, ʾāmâ וּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙ and remember zākar וְלֹֽא me, and not lōʾ תִשְׁכַּ֣ח forget šākaḥ אֶת ʾēt אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ thine handmaid, ʾāmâ וְנָֽתַתָּ֥ה but wilt give nātan לַאֲמָֽתְךָ֖ unto thine handmaid ʾāmâ זֶ֣רַע child, zeraʿ אֲנָשִׁ֑ים a man ʾîš וּנְתַתִּ֤יו then I will give nātan לַֽיהוָה֙ him unto the Lord yĕhōwâ כָּל all kōl יְמֵ֣י the days yôm חַיָּ֔יו of his life, ḥay וּמוֹרָ֖ה razor môrâ לֹֽא and there shall no lōʾ יַעֲלֶ֥ה come ʿālâ עַל upon ʿal רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ his head. rōš

וְהָיָה֙ And it came to pass, hāyâ כִּ֣י as kî הִרְבְּתָ֔ה she continued rābâ לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל praying pālal לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְעֵלִ֖י that Eli ʿēlî שֹׁמֵ֥ר marked šāmar אֶת ʾēt פִּֽיהָ׃ her mouth. pe

וְחַנָּ֗ה Now Hannah, ḥannâ הִ֚יא she hûʾ מְדַבֶּ֣רֶת spake dābar עַל in ʿal לִבָּ֔הּ her heart; lēb רַ֚ק only raq שְׂפָתֶ֣יהָ her lips śāpâ נָּע֔וֹת moved, nûaʿ וְקוֹלָ֖הּ but her voice qôl לֹ֣א was not lōʾ יִשָּׁמֵ֑עַ heard: šāmaʿ וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ thought ḥāšab עֵלִ֖י therefore Eli ʿēlî לְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃ she had been drunken. šikkôr

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ unto ʾēl עֵלִ֔י And Eli ʿēlî עַד her, How ʿad מָתַ֖י long mātay תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑ין wilt thou be drunken? šākar הָסִ֥ירִי put away sûr אֶת ʾēt יֵינֵ֖ךְ thy wine yayin מֵֽעָלָֽיִךְ׃ from thee. ʿal

וַתַּ֨עַן answered ʿānâ חַנָּ֤ה And Hannah ḥannâ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said, ʾāmar לֹ֣א No, lōʾ אֲדֹנִ֔י my lord, ʾādôn אִשָּׁ֤ה I a woman ʾiššâ קְשַׁת of a sorrowful qāše ר֙וּחַ֙ spirit: rûaḥ אָנֹ֔כִי I ʾānōkî וְיַ֥יִן wine yayin וְשֵׁכָ֖ר nor strong drink, šēkār לֹ֣א neither lōʾ שָׁתִ֑יתִי have drunk šātâ וָֽאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ but have poured out šāpak אֶת ʾēt נַפְשִׁ֖י my soul nepeš לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

אַל not ʾal תִּתֵּן֙ Count nātan אֶת ʾēt אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ thine handmaid ʾāmâ לִפְנֵ֖י for pānîm בַּת a daughter bat בְּלִיָּ֑עַל of Belial: bĕliyyaʿal כִּֽי for kî מֵרֹ֥ב out of the abundance rōb שִׂיחִ֛י of my complaint śîaḥ וְכַעְסִ֖י and grief kaʿas דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי have I spoken dābar עַד hitherto. ʿad הֵֽנָּה׃ hēnnâ

וַיַּ֧עַן answered ʿānâ עֵלִ֛י Then Eli ʿēlî וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar לְכִ֣י Go hālak לְשָׁל֑וֹם in peace: šālôm וֵֽאלֹהֵ֣י and the God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl יִתֵּן֙ grant nātan אֶת ʾēt שֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְ thy petition šĕʾēlâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer שָׁאַ֖לְתְּ thou hast asked šāʾal מֵֽעִמּֽוֹ׃ of him. ʿim

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר And she said, ʾāmar תִּמְצָ֧א find māṣāʾ שִׁפְחָֽתְךָ֛ Let thine handmaid šipḥâ חֵ֖ן grace ḥēn בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ in thy sight. ʿayin וַתֵּ֨לֶךְ went hālak הָֽאִשָּׁ֤ה So the woman ʾiššâ לְדַרְכָּהּ֙ her way, derek וַתֹּאכַ֔ל and did eat, ʾākal וּפָנֶ֥יהָ and her countenance pānîm לֹא no lōʾ הָֽיוּ was hāyâ לָ֖הּ עֽוֹד׃ more ʿôd

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ early, šākam בַבֹּ֗קֶר And they rose up in the morning bōqer וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙ and worshipped šāḥâ לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ and returned, šûb וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ and came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl בֵּיתָ֖ם their house bayit הָֽרָמָ֑תָה to Ramah: rāmâ וַיֵּ֤דַע knew yādaʿ אֶלְקָנָה֙ and Elkanah ʾelqānâ אֶת ʾēt חַנָּ֣ה Hannah ḥannâ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ his wife; ʾiššâ וַֽיִּזְכְּרֶ֖הָ remembered her. zākar יְהוָֽה׃ and the Lord yĕhōwâ

וַֽיְהִי֙ Wherefore it came to pass, hāyâ לִתְקֻפ֣וֹת was come tĕqûpâ הַיָּמִ֔ים when the time yôm וַתַּ֥הַר had conceived, hārâ חַנָּ֖ה about after Hannah ḥannâ וַתֵּ֣לֶד that she bare yālad בֵּ֑ן a son, bēn וַתִּקְרָ֤א and called qārāʾ אֶת ʾēt שְׁמוֹ֙ his name šēm שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל Samuel, šĕmûʾēl כִּ֥י Because kî מֵֽיְהוָ֖ה him of the Lord. yĕhōwâ שְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃ I have asked šāʾal

וַיַּ֛עַל went up ʿālâ הָאִ֥ישׁ And the man ʾîš אֶלְקָנָ֖ה Elkanah, ʾelqānâ וְכָל and all kōl בֵּית֑וֹ his house, bayit לִזְבֹּ֧חַ to offer zābaḥ לַֽיהוָ֛ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt זֶ֥בַח sacrifice, zebaḥ הַיָּמִ֖ים the yearly yôm וְאֶת ʾēt נִדְרֽוֹ׃ and his vow. neder

וְחַנָּ֖ה But Hannah ḥannâ לֹ֣א lōʾ עָלָ֑תָה went not up; ʿālâ כִּֽי for kî אָמְרָ֣ה she said ʾāmar לְאִישָׁ֗הּ unto her husband, ʾîš עַ֣ד until ʿad יִגָּמֵ֤ל be weaned, gāmal הַנַּ֙עַר֙ the child naʿar וַהֲבִֽאֹתִ֗יו and I will bring bôʾ וְנִרְאָה֙ him, that he may appear rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt פְּנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְיָ֥שַׁב abide yāšab שָׁ֖ם and there šām עַד for ʿad עוֹלָֽם׃ ever. ʿôlām

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar לָהּ֩ אֶלְקָנָ֨ה And Elkanah ʾelqānâ אִישָׁ֜הּ her husband ʾîš עֲשִׂ֧י unto her, Do ʿāśâ הַטּ֣וֹב thee good; ṭôb בְּעֵינַ֗יִךְ what seemeth ʿayin שְׁבִי֙ tarry yāšab עַד until ʿad גָּמְלֵ֣ךְ thou have weaned gāmal אֹת֔וֹ ʾēt אַ֛ךְ him; only ʾak יָקֵ֥ם establish qûm יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt דְּבָר֑וֹ his word. dābār וַתֵּ֤שֶׁב abode, yāšab הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ So the woman ʾiššâ וַתֵּ֣ינֶק suck yānaq אֶת ʾēt בְּנָ֔הּ and gave her son bēn עַד until ʿad גָמְלָ֖הּ she weaned him. gāmal אֹתֽוֹ׃ ʾēt

וַתַּֽעֲלֵ֨הוּ him, she took him up ʿālâ עִמָּ֜הּ with ʿim כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר And when ʾăšer גְּמָלַ֗תּוּ she had weaned gāmal בְּפָרִ֤ים bullocks, par שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ her, with three šālôš וְאֵיפָ֨ה ephah ʾêpâ אַחַ֥ת and one ʾeḥād קֶ֙מַח֙ of flour, qemaḥ וְנֵ֣בֶל and a bottle nebel יַ֔יִן of wine, yayin וַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּ and brought bôʾ בֵית him unto the house bayit יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ שִׁל֑וֹ in Shiloh: šîlō וְהַנַּ֖עַר and the child naʿar נָֽעַר׃ young. naʿar

וַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּ And they slew šāḥaṭ אֶת ʾēt הַפָּ֑ר a bullock, par וַיָּבִ֥אוּ and brought bôʾ אֶת ʾēt הַנַּ֖עַר the child naʿar אֶל to ʾēl עֵלִֽי׃ Eli. ʿēlî

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ And she said, ʾāmar בִּ֣י Oh bî אֲדֹנִ֔י my lord, ʾādôn חֵ֥י liveth, ḥay נַפְשְׁךָ֖ thy soul nepeš אֲדֹנִ֑י my lord, ʾādôn אֲנִ֣י I ʾănî הָֽאִשָּׁ֗ה the woman ʾiššâ הַנִּצֶּ֤בֶת that stood nāṣab עִמְּכָה֙ by ʿim בָּזֶ֔ה thee here, ze לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל praying pālal אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

אֶל For ʾēl הַנַּ֥עַר child naʿar הַזֶּ֖ה this ze הִתְפַּלָּ֑לְתִּי I prayed; pālal וַיִּתֵּ֨ן hath given nātan יְהוָ֥ה and the Lord yĕhōwâ לִי֙ אֶת me ʾēt שְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔י my petition šĕʾēlâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer שָׁאַ֖לְתִּי I asked šāʾal מֵֽעִמּֽוֹ׃ of him: ʿim

וְגַ֣ם Therefore also gam אָֽנֹכִ֗י I ʾānōkî הִשְׁאִלְתִּ֙הוּ֙ have lent šāʾal לַֽיהוָ֔ה him to the Lord; yĕhōwâ כָּל as long kōl הַיָּמִים֙ he liveth yôm אֲשֶׁ֣ר as ʾăšer הָיָ֔ה shall be hāyâ ה֥וּא he hûʾ שָׁא֖וּל lent šāʾal לַֽיהוָ֑ה to the Lord. yĕhōwâ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ And he worshipped šāḥâ שָׁ֖ם there. šām לַֽיהוָֽה׃ the Lord yĕhōwâ
