וּבֶן הֲדַ֣ד And Ben-hadad ben hădad מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek אֲרָ֗ם of Syria ʾărām קָבַץ֙ gathered together: qābaṣ אֶת ʾēt כָּל kōl חֵיל֔וֹ all his host ḥayil וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים and thirty šĕlôšîm וּשְׁנַ֥יִם and two šĕnayim מֶ֛לֶךְ kings melek אִתּ֖וֹ with ʾēt וְס֣וּס him, and horses, sûs וָרָ֑כֶב and chariots: rekeb וַיַּ֗עַל and he went up ʿālâ וַיָּ֙צַר֙ and besieged ṣûr עַל ʿal שֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן Samaria, šōmĕrôn וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם and warred against it. lāḥam בָּֽהּ׃

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח And he sent šālaḥ מַלְאָכִ֛ים messengers mălʾok אֶל to ʾēl אַחְאָ֥ב Ahab ʾaḥʾāb מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl הָעִֽירָה׃ into the city, ʿîr וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ unto him, כֹּ֚ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar בֶּן הֲדַ֔ד Ben-hadad, ben hădad

כַּסְפְּךָ֥ Thy silver kesep וּֽזְהָבְךָ֖ and thy gold zāhāb לִי ה֑וּא mine; hûʾ וְנָשֶׁ֧יךָ thy wives also ʾiššâ וּבָנֶ֛יךָ and thy children, bēn הַטּוֹבִ֖ים the goodliest, ṭôb לִי הֵֽם׃ mine. hēm

וַיַּ֤עַן answered ʿānâ מֶֽלֶךְ And the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֔אמֶר and said, ʾāmar כִּדְבָֽרְךָ֖ according to thy saying, dābār אֲדֹנִ֣י My lord, ʾādôn הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ O king, melek לְךָ֥ אֲנִ֖י I ʾănî וְכָל thine, and all kōl אֲשֶׁר that I have. ʾăšer לִֽי׃

וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ came again, šûb הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים And the messengers mălʾok וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ and said, ʾāmar כֹּֽה Thus kō אָמַ֥ר speaketh ʾāmar בֶּן הֲדַ֖ד Ben-hadad, ben hădad לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar כִּֽי Although kî שָׁלַ֤חְתִּי I have sent šālaḥ אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ unto ʾēl לֵאמֹ֔ר thee, saying, ʾāmar כַּסְפְּךָ֧ me thy silver, kesep וּֽזְהָבְךָ֛ and thy gold, zāhāb וְנָשֶׁ֥יךָ and thy wives, ʾiššâ וּבָנֶ֖יךָ and thy children; bēn לִ֥י תִתֵּֽן׃ Thou shalt deliver nātan

כִּ֣י׀ Yet kî אִם about ʾim כָּעֵ֣ת this time, ʿēt מָחָ֗ר thee to morrow māḥār אֶשְׁלַ֤ח I will send šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt עֲבָדַי֙ my servants ʿebed אֵלֶ֔יךָ unto ʾēl וְחִפְּשׂוּ֙ and they shall search ḥāpaś אֶת ʾēt בֵּ֣יתְךָ֔ thine house, bayit וְאֵ֖ת ʾēt בָּתֵּ֣י and the houses bayit עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ of thy servants; ʿebed וְהָיָה֙ and it shall be, hāyâ כָּל whatsoever kōl מַחְמַ֣ד is pleasant maḥmād עֵינֶ֔יךָ in thine eyes, ʿayin יָשִׂ֥ימוּ they shall put śûm בְיָדָ֖ם in their hand, yād וְלָקָֽחוּ׃ and take away. lāqaḥ

וַיִּקְרָ֤א called qārāʾ מֶֽלֶךְ Then the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl לְכָל all kōl זִקְנֵ֣י the elders zāqēn הָאָ֔רֶץ of the land, ʾereṣ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ and said, ʾāmar דְּעוּ Mark, yādaʿ נָ֣א I pray you, nāʾ וּרְא֔וּ and see rāʾâ כִּ֥י how kî רָעָ֖ה mischief: raʿ זֶ֣ה this ze מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ seeketh bāqaš כִּֽי for kî שָׁלַ֨ח he sent šālaḥ אֵלַ֜י unto ʾēl לְנָשַׁ֤י me for my wives, ʾiššâ וּלְבָנַי֙ and for my children, bēn וּלְכַסְפִּ֣י and for my silver, kesep וְלִזְהָבִ֔י and for my gold; zāhāb וְלֹ֥א him not. lōʾ מָנַ֖עְתִּי and I denied mānaʿ מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ min

וַיֹּֽאמְר֥וּ said ʾāmar אֵלָ֛יו unto ʾēl כָּל And all kōl הַזְּקֵנִ֖ים the elders zāqēn וְכָל and all kōl הָעָ֑ם the people ʿam אַל not ʾal תִּשְׁמַ֖ע him, Hearken šāmaʿ וְל֥וֹא nor lōʾ תֹאבֶֽה׃ consent. ʾābâ

וַיֹּ֜אמֶר Wherefore he said ʾāmar לְמַלְאֲכֵ֣י unto the messengers mălʾok בֶן הֲדַ֗ד of Ben-hadad, ben hădad אִמְר֞וּ Tell ʾāmar לַֽאדֹנִ֤י my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king, melek כֹּל֩ All kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer שָׁלַ֨חְתָּ thou didst send šālaḥ אֶל for to ʾēl עַבְדְּךָ֤ thy servant ʿebed בָרִֽאשֹׁנָה֙ at the first riʾšôn אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֔ה I will do: ʿāśâ וְהַדָּבָ֣ר thing dābār הַזֶּ֔ה but this ze לֹ֥א not lōʾ אוּכַ֖ל I may yākōl לַֽעֲשׂ֑וֹת do. ʿāśâ וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ departed, hālak הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים And the messengers mălʾok וַיְשִׁבֻ֖הוּ and brought šûb דָּבָֽר׃ him word again. dābār

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח sent šālaḥ אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl בֶּן הֲדַ֔ד And Ben-hadad ben hădad וַיֹּ֕אמֶר him, and said, ʾāmar כֹּֽה kō יַעֲשׂ֥וּן do so ʿāśâ לִ֛י אֱלֹהִ֖ים The gods ʾĕlōhîm וְכֹ֣ה kō יוֹסִ֑פוּ unto me, and more also, yāsap אִם if ʾim יִשְׂפֹּק֙ shall suffice sāpaq עֲפַ֣ר the dust ʿāpār שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן of Samaria šōmĕrôn לִשְׁעָלִ֕ים for handfuls šōʿal לְכָל for all kōl הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer בְּרַגְלָֽי׃ follow me. regel

וַיַּ֤עַן answered ʿānâ מֶֽלֶךְ And the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said, ʾāmar דַּבְּר֔וּ Tell dābar אַל Let not ʾal יִתְהַלֵּ֥ל on boast himself hālal חֹגֵ֖ר him that girdeth ḥāgar כִּמְפַתֵּֽחַ׃ as he that putteth it off. pātaḥ

וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass, hāyâ כִּשְׁמֹ֙עַ֙ when heard šāmaʿ אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֣ר message, dābār הַזֶּ֔ה this ze וְה֥וּא as he hûʾ שֹׁתֶ֛ה drinking, šātâ ה֥וּא he hûʾ וְהַמְּלָכִ֖ים and the kings melek בַּסֻּכּ֑וֹת in the pavilions, sukkâ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר that he said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl עֲבָדָיו֙ his servants, ʿebed שִׂ֔ימוּ Set śûm וַיָּשִׂ֖ימוּ And they set śûm עַל against ʿal הָעִֽיר׃ the city. ʿîr

וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ And, behold, hinnē נָבִ֣יא prophet nābîʾ אֶחָ֗ד a ʾeḥād נִגַּשׁ֮ there came nāgaš אֶל unto ʾēl אַחְאָ֣ב Ahab ʾaḥʾāb מֶֽלֶךְ king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֗אמֶר saying, ʾāmar כֹּ֚ה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ הְֽרָאִ֔יתָ Hast thou seen rāʾâ אֵ֛ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הֶֽהָמ֥וֹן multitude? hāmôn הַגָּד֖וֹל great gādôl הַזֶּ֑ה this ze הִנְנִ֨י behold, hinnē נֹֽתְנ֤וֹ I will deliver nātan בְיָֽדְךָ֙ it into thine hand yād הַיּ֔וֹם this day; yôm וְיָֽדַעְתָּ֖ and thou shalt know yādaʿ כִּֽי that kî אֲנִ֥י I ʾănî יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said, ʾāmar אַחְאָב֙ And Ahab ʾaḥʾāb בְּמִ֔י By whom? mî וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ And he said, ʾāmar כֹּֽה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ בְּנַֽעֲרֵ֖י by the young men naʿar שָׂרֵ֣י of the princes śar הַמְּדִינ֑וֹת of the provinces. mĕdînâ וַיֹּ֛אמֶר Then he said, ʾāmar מִֽי Who mî יֶאְסֹ֥ר shall order ʾāsar הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה the battle? milḥāmâ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר And he answered, ʾāmar אָֽתָּה׃ Thou. ʾattâ

וַיִּפְקֹ֗ד Then he numbered pāqad אֶֽת ʾēt נַעֲרֵי֙ the young men naʿar שָׂרֵ֣י of the princes śar הַמְּדִינ֔וֹת of the provinces, mĕdînâ וַיִּֽהְי֕וּ and they were hāyâ מָאתַ֖יִם two hundred mēʾâ שְׁנַ֣יִם two: šĕnayim וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֑ים and thirty šĕlôšîm וְאַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם and after ʾaḥar פָּקַ֧ד them he numbered pāqad אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָעָ֛ם the people, ʿam כָּל all kōl בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl שִׁבְעַ֥ת seven šebaʿ אֲלָפִֽים׃ thousand. ʾelep

וַיֵּֽצְא֖וּ And they went out yāṣāʾ בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם at noon. ṣōhar וּבֶן הֲדַד֩ But Ben-hadad ben hădad שֹׁתֶ֨ה drinking šātâ שִׁכּ֜וֹר himself drunk šikkôr בַּסֻּכּ֗וֹת in the pavilions, sukkâ ה֧וּא he hûʾ וְהַמְּלָכִ֛ים and the kings, melek שְׁלֹשִֽׁים the thirty šĕlôšîm וּשְׁנַ֥יִם and two šĕnayim מֶ֖לֶךְ kings melek עֹזֵ֥ר that helped him. ʿāzar אֹתֽוֹ׃ ʾēt

וַיֵּֽצְא֗וּ went out yāṣāʾ נַֽעֲרֵ֛י And the young men naʿar שָׂרֵ֥י of the princes śar הַמְּדִינ֖וֹת of the provinces mĕdînâ בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה first; riʾšôn וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח sent out, šālaḥ בֶּן הֲדַ֗ד and Ben-hadad ben hădad וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ and they told nāgad לוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר him, saying, ʾāmar אֲנָשִׁ֕ים There are men ʾĕnôš יָֽצְא֖וּ come out yāṣāʾ מִשֹּֽׁמְרֽוֹן׃ of Samaria. šōmĕrôn

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אִם Whether ʾim לְשָׁל֥וֹם for peace, šālôm יָצָ֖אוּ they be come out yāṣāʾ תִּפְשׂ֣וּם take tāpaś חַיִּ֑ים them alive; ḥay וְאִ֧ם or whether ʾim לְמִלְחָמָ֛ה for war, milḥāmâ יָצָ֖אוּ they be come out yāṣāʾ חַיִּ֥ים them alive. ḥay תִּפְשֽׂוּם׃ take tāpaś

וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ So these ʾēlle יָֽצְא֣וּ came out yāṣāʾ מִן of min הָעִ֔יר the city, ʿîr נַֽעֲרֵ֖י young men naʿar שָׂרֵ֣י of the princes śar הַמְּדִינ֑וֹת of the provinces mĕdînâ וְהַחַ֖יִל and the army ḥayil אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer אַֽחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ followed them. ʾaḥar

וַיַּכּוּ֙ And they slew nākâ אִ֣ישׁ every one ʾîš אִישׁ֔וֹ his man: ʾîš וַיָּנֻ֣סֽוּ fled; nûs אֲרָ֔ם and the Syrians ʾărām וַֽיִּרְדְּפֵ֖ם pursued rādap יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל and Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיִּמָּלֵ֗ט escaped mālaṭ בֶּן הֲדַד֙ them: and Ben-hadad ben hădad מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek אֲרָ֔ם of Syria ʾărām עַל on ʿal ס֖וּס an horse sûs וּפָֽרָשִֽׁים׃ with the horsemen. pāroš

וַיִּגַּ֤שׁ came nāgaš הַנָּבִיא֙ And the prophet nābîʾ אֶל to ʾēl מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and said ʾāmar לוֹ֙ לֵ֣ךְ unto him, Go, hālak הִתְחַזַּ֔ק strengthen thyself, ḥāzaq וְדַ֥ע and mark, yādaʿ וּרְאֵ֖ה and see rāʾâ אֵ֣ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר what ʾăšer תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֑ה thou doest: ʿāśâ כִּ֚י for kî לִתְשׁוּבַ֣ת at the return tĕšûbâ הַשָּׁנָ֔ה of the year šāne מֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek אֲרָ֖ם of Syria ʾărām עֹלֶ֥ה will come up ʿālâ עָלֶֽיךָ׃ against thee. ʿal

וְעַבְדֵ֨י And the servants ʿebed מֶֽלֶךְ of the king melek אֲרָ֜ם of Syria ʾărām אָֽמְר֣וּ said ʾāmar אֵלָ֗יו unto ʾēl אֱלֹהֵ֤י him, Their gods ʾĕlōhîm הָרִים֙ of the hills; har אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם gods ʾĕlōhîm עַל therefore ʿal כֵּ֖ן kēn חָֽזְק֣וּ they were stronger ḥāzaq מִמֶּ֑נּוּ than min וְאוּלָ֗ם we; but ʾûlām נִלָּחֵ֤ם let us fight lāḥam אִתָּם֙ against ʾēt בַּמִּישׁ֔וֹר them in the plain, mîšôr אִם and surely ʾim לֹ֥א than they. lōʾ נֶֽחֱזַ֖ק we shall be stronger ḥāzaq מֵהֶֽם׃ hēm

וְאֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֥ר thing, dābār הַזֶּ֖ה this ze עֲשֵׂ֑ה And do ʿāśâ הָסֵ֤ר Take sûr הַמְּלָכִים֙ the kings melek אִ֣ישׁ away, every man ʾîš מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ out of his place, māqôm וְשִׂ֥ים and put śûm פַּח֖וֹת captains peḥâ תַּחְתֵּיהֶֽם׃ in their rooms: taḥat

וְאַתָּ֣ה ʾattâ תִֽמְנֶֽה And number mānâ לְךָ֣׀ חַ֡יִל thee an army, ḥayil כַּחַיִל֩ like the army ḥayil הַנֹּפֵ֨ל that thou hast lost, nāpal מֵֽאוֹתָ֜ךְ ʾēt וְס֣וּס horse sûs כַּסּ֣וּס׀ for horse, sûs וְרֶ֣כֶב and chariot rekeb כָּרֶ֗כֶב for chariot: rekeb וְנִֽלָּחֲמָ֤ה and we will fight against lāḥam אוֹתָם֙ ʾēt בַּמִּישׁ֔וֹר them in the plain, mîšôr אִם surely ʾim לֹ֥א lōʾ נֶֽחֱזַ֖ק we shall be stronger ḥāzaq מֵהֶ֑ם hēm וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע than they. And he hearkened šāmaʿ לְקֹלָ֖ם unto their voice, qôl וַיַּ֥עַשׂ and did so. ʿāśâ כֵּֽן׃ kēn

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ לִתְשׁוּבַ֣ת at the return tĕšûbâ הַשָּׁנָ֔ה of the year, šāne וַיִּפְקֹ֥ד numbered pāqad בֶּן הֲדַ֖ד that Ben-hadad ben hădad אֶת ʾēt אֲרָ֑ם the Syrians, ʾărām וַיַּ֣עַל and went up ʿālâ אֲפֵ֔קָה to Aphek, ʾăpēq לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה to fight milḥāmâ עִם against ʿim יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וּבְנֵ֣י And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl הָתְפָּֽקְדוּ֙ were numbered, pāqad וְכָלְכְּל֔וּ and were all present, kûl וַיֵּֽלְכ֖וּ and went hālak לִקְרָאתָ֑ם against qirʾâ וַיַּֽחֲנ֨וּ pitched ḥānâ בְנֵֽי them: and the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl נֶגְדָּ֗ם before neged כִּשְׁנֵי֙ them like two šĕnayim חֲשִׂפֵ֣י little flocks ḥāśip עִזִּ֔ים of kids; ʿēz וַֽאֲרָ֖ם but the Syrians ʾărām מִלְא֥וּ filled mālēʾ אֶת ʾēt הָאָֽרֶץ׃ the country. ʾereṣ

וַיִּגַּ֞שׁ And there came nāgaš אִ֣ישׁ a man ʾîš הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים of God, ʾĕlōhîm וַיֹּאמֶר֮ and spake ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֜אמֶר and said, ʾāmar כֹּֽה Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֗ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ יַ֠עַן Because yaʿan אֲשֶׁ֨ר ʾăšer אָֽמְר֤וּ have said, ʾāmar אֲרָם֙ the Syrians ʾărām אֱלֹהֵ֤י God ʾĕlōhîm הָרִים֙ of the hills, har יְהוָ֔ה The Lord yĕhōwâ וְלֹֽא not lōʾ אֱלֹהֵ֥י God ʾĕlōhîm עֲמָקִ֖ים of the valleys, ʿēmeq ה֑וּא but he hûʾ וְ֠נָֽתַתִּי therefore will I deliver nātan אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הֶֽהָמ֨וֹן multitude hāmôn הַגָּ֤דוֹל great gādôl הַזֶּה֙ this ze בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ into thine hand, yād וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם and ye shall know yādaʿ כִּֽי that kî אֲנִ֥י I ʾănî יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַֽיַּחֲנ֧וּ And they pitched ḥānâ אֵ֦לֶּה one ʾēlle נֹֽכַח over against nōkaḥ אֵ֖לֶּה the other ʾēlle שִׁבְעַ֣ת seven šebaʿ יָמִ֑ים days. yôm וַיְהִ֣י׀ And it was, hāyâ בַּיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י that in the seventh šĕbîʿî וַתִּקְרַב֙ was joined: qārab הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה the battle milḥāmâ וַיַּכּ֨וּ slew nākâ בְנֵֽי and the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת of ʾēt אֲרָ֛ם the Syrians ʾărām מֵֽאָה an hundred mēʾâ אֶ֥לֶף thousand ʾelep רַגְלִ֖י footmen raglî בְּי֥וֹם day. yôm אֶחָֽד׃ in one ʾeḥād

וַיָּנֻ֨סוּ fled nûs הַנּֽוֹתָרִ֥ים׀ But the rest yātar אֲפֵקָה֮ to Aphek, ʾăpēq אֶל into ʾēl הָעִיר֒ the city; ʿîr וַתִּפֹּל֙ fell nāpal הַֽחוֹמָ֔ה and a wall ḥômâ עַל upon ʿal עֶשְׂרִ֨ים twenty ʿeśrîm וְשִׁבְעָ֥ה and seven šebaʿ אֶ֛לֶף thousand ʾelep אִ֖ישׁ of the men ʾîš הַנּֽוֹתָרִ֑ים left. yātar וּבֶן הֲדַ֣ד And Ben-hadad ben hădad נָ֔ס fled, nûs וַיָּבֹ֥א and came bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl הָעִ֖יר the city, ʿîr חֶ֥דֶר into an inner ḥeder בְּחָֽדֶר׃ chamber. ḥeder

וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ said ʾāmar אֵלָיו֮ unto ʾēl עֲבָדָיו֒ And his servants ʿebed הִנֵּה him, Behold hinnē נָ֣א now, nāʾ שָׁמַ֔עְנוּ we have heard šāmaʿ כִּ֗י that kî מַלְכֵי֙ the kings melek בֵּ֣ית of the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl כִּֽי kî מַלְכֵ֥י kings: melek חֶ֖סֶד merciful ḥēsēd הֵ֑ם hēm נָשִׂ֣ימָה put śûm נָּא֩ let us, I pray thee, nāʾ שַׂקִּ֨ים sackcloth śaq בְּמָתְנֵ֜ינוּ on our loins, mōten וַֽחֲבָלִ֣ים and ropes ḥebel בְּרֹאשֵׁ֗נוּ upon our heads, rōš וְנֵצֵא֙ and go out yāṣāʾ אֶל to ʾēl מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel: yiśrāʾēl אוּלַ֖י peradventure ʾûlay יְחַיֶּ֥ה he will save ḥāyâ אֶת ʾēt נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ thy life. nepeš

וַיַּחְגְּרוּ֩ So they girded ḥāgar שַׂקִּ֨ים sackcloth śaq בְּמָתְנֵיהֶ֜ם on their loins, mōten וַֽחֲבָלִ֣ים and ropes ḥebel בְּרָֽאשֵׁיהֶ֗ם on their heads, rōš וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ and came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ and said, ʾāmar עַבְדְּךָ֧ Thy servant ʿebed בֶן הֲדַ֛ד Ben-hadad ben hădad אָמַ֖ר saith, ʾāmar תְּחִי live. ḥāyâ נָ֣א I pray thee, nāʾ נַפְשִׁ֑י let me nepeš וַיֹּ֛אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar הַעוֹדֶ֥נּוּ he yet ʿôd חַ֖י alive? ḥay אָחִ֥י my brother. ʾāḥ הֽוּא׃ he hûʾ

וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁים֩ Now the men ʾîš יְנַֽחֲשׁ֨וּ did diligently observe nāḥaš וַֽיְמַהֲר֜וּ him, and did hastily māhar וַיַּחְלְט֣וּ catch ḥālaṭ הֲמִמֶּ֗נּוּ whether from min וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ and they said, ʾāmar אָחִ֣יךָ Thy brother ʾāḥ בֶן הֲדַ֔ד Ben-hadad. ben hădad וַיֹּ֖אמֶר Then he said, ʾāmar בֹּ֣אוּ Go bôʾ קָחֻ֑הוּ ye, bring lāqaḥ וַיֵּצֵ֤א came forth yāṣāʾ אֵלָיו֙ to ʾēl בֶּן הֲדַ֔ד him. Then Ben-hadad ben hădad וַֽיַּעֲלֵ֖הוּ him; and he caused him to come up ʿālâ עַל into ʿal הַמֶּרְכָּבָֽה׃ the chariot. merkābâ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר And said ʾāmar אֵלָ֡יו unto ʾēl הֶֽעָרִ֣ים him, The cities, ʿîr אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer לָֽקַח took lāqaḥ אָבִי֩ my father ʾāb מֵאֵ֨ת from ʾēt אָבִ֜יךָ thy father, ʾāb אָשִׁ֗יב I will restore; šûb וְ֠חֻצוֹת streets ḥûṣ תָּשִׂ֨ים and thou shalt make śûm לְךָ֤ בְדַמֶּ֙שֶׂק֙ for thee in Damascus, dammeśeq כַּֽאֲשֶׁר as ʾăšer שָׂ֤ם made śûm אָבִי֙ my father ʾāb בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן in Samaria. šōmĕrôn וַֽאֲנִ֖י Then I ʾănî בַּבְּרִ֣ית with this covenant. bĕrît אֲשַׁלְּחֶ֑ךָּ will send thee away šālaḥ וַיִּכְרָת So he made kārat ל֥וֹ בְרִ֖ית a covenant bĕrît וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃ with him, and sent him away. šālaḥ

וְאִ֨ישׁ man ʾîš אֶחָ֜ד And a certain ʾeḥād מִבְּנֵ֣י of the sons bēn הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים of the prophets nābîʾ אָמַ֧ר said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl רֵעֵ֛הוּ his neighbour rēaʿ בִּדְבַ֥ר in the word dābār יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ הַכֵּ֣ינִי Smite nākâ נָ֑א me, I pray thee. nāʾ וַיְמָאֵ֥ן refused māʾēn הָאִ֖ישׁ And the man ʾîš לְהַכֹּתֽוֹ׃ to smite him. nākâ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר Then said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ יַ֚עַן he unto him, Because yaʿan אֲשֶׁ֤ר ʾăšer לֹֽא thou hast not lōʾ שָׁמַ֙עְתָּ֙ obeyed šāmaʿ בְּק֣וֹל the voice qôl יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ הִנְּךָ֤ behold, hēn הוֹלֵךְ֙ as soon as thou art departed hālak מֵֽאִתִּ֔י from ʾēt וְהִכְּךָ֖ shall slay nākâ הָֽאַרְיֵ֑ה me, a lion ʾărî וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ thee. And as soon as he was departed hālak מֵֽאֶצְל֔וֹ from him, ʾēṣel וַיִּמְצָאֵ֥הוּ found māṣāʾ הָֽאַרְיֵ֖ה a lion ʾărî וַיַּכֵּֽהוּ׃ him, and slew him. nākâ

וַיִּמְצָא֙ Then he found māṣāʾ אִ֣ישׁ man, ʾîš אַחֵ֔ר another ʾaḥēr וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar הַכֵּ֣ינִי Smite nākâ נָ֑א me, I pray thee. nāʾ וַיַּכֵּ֥הוּ smote nākâ הָאִ֖ישׁ And the man ʾîš הַכֵּ֥ה him, so that in smiting nākâ וּפָצֹֽעַ׃ he wounded pāṣaʿ

וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ departed, hālak הַנָּבִ֔יא So the prophet nābîʾ וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֥ד and waited ʿāmad לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ for the king melek עַל by ʿal הַדָּ֑רֶךְ the way, derek וַיִּתְחַפֵּ֥שׂ and disguised himself ḥāpaś בָּֽאֲפֵ֖ר with ashes ʾăpēr עַל upon ʿal עֵינָֽיו׃ his face. ʿayin

וַיְהִ֤י And as hāyâ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek עֹבֵ֔ר passed by, ʿābar וְה֖וּא he hûʾ צָעַ֣ק cried ṣāʿaq אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king: melek וַיֹּ֜אמֶר and he said, ʾāmar עַבְדְּךָ֣׀ Thy servant ʿebed יָצָ֣א went out yāṣāʾ בְקֶֽרֶב into the midst qereb הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה of the battle; milḥāmâ וְהִנֵּֽה and, behold, hinnē אִ֨ישׁ a man ʾîš סָ֜ר turned aside, sûr וַיָּבֵ֧א and brought bôʾ אֵלַ֣י unto ʾēl אִ֗ישׁ a man ʾîš וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ me, and said, ʾāmar שְׁמֹר֙ Keep šāmar אֶת ʾēt הָאִ֣ישׁ man: ʾîš הַזֶּ֔ה this ze אִם if ʾim הִפָּקֵד֙ by any means pāqad יִפָּקֵ֔ד he be missing, pāqad וְהָֽיְתָ֤ה be hāyâ נַפְשְׁךָ֙ then shall thy life nepeš תַּ֣חַת for taḥat נַפְשׁ֔וֹ his life, nepeš א֥וֹ or ʾô כִכַּר a talent kikkār כֶּ֖סֶף of silver. kesep תִּשְׁקֽוֹל׃ else thou shalt pay šāqal

וַיְהִ֣י was hāyâ עַבְדְּךָ֗ And as thy servant ʿebed עֹשֵׂ֥ה busy ʿāśâ הֵ֛נָּה here hēnnâ וָהֵ֖נָּה and there, hēnnâ וְה֣וּא he hûʾ אֵינֶ֑נּוּ was gone. ʾayin וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָ֧יו unto ʾēl מֶֽלֶךְ And the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl כֵּ֥ן him, So kēn מִשְׁפָּטֶ֖ךָ thy judgment mišpāṭ אַתָּ֥ה thyself ʾattâ חָרָֽצְתָּ׃ hast decided ḥāraṣ

וַיְמַהֵ֕ר And he hasted, māhar וַיָּ֙סַר֙ and took sûr אֶת ʾēt הָ֣אֲפֵ֔ר the ashes ʾăpēr מֵעֲלֵ֖ away from ʿal עֵינָ֑יו his face; ʿayin וַיַּכֵּ֤ר discerned nākar אֹתוֹ֙ ʾēt מֶ֣לֶךְ and the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl כִּ֥י him that kî מֵֽהַנְּבִיאִ֖ים of the prophets. nābîʾ הֽוּא׃ he hûʾ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר And he said ʾāmar אֵלָ֗יו unto ʾēl כֹּ֚ה him, Thus kō אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ יַ֛עַן Because yaʿan שִׁלַּ֥חְתָּ thou hast let go šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt אִישׁ a man ʾîš חֶרְמִ֖י whom I appointed to utter destruction, ḥērem מִיָּ֑ד out of hand yād וְהָֽיְתָ֤ה shall go hāyâ נַפְשְׁךָ֙ therefore thy life nepeš תַּ֣חַת for taḥat נַפְשׁ֔וֹ his life, nepeš וְעַמְּךָ֖ and thy people ʿam תַּ֥חַת for taḥat עַמּֽוֹ׃ his people. ʿam

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ went hālak מֶֽלֶךְ And the king melek יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl עַל to ʿal בֵּית֖וֹ his house bayit סַ֣ר heavy sar וְזָעֵ֑ף and displeased, zāʿēp וַיָּבֹ֖א and came bôʾ שֹֽׁמְרֽוֹנָה׃ to Samaria. šōmĕrôn
