לְמַעַן֩ That maʿan יָקִ֨ים may continue qûm יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt דְּבָר֗וֹ his word dābār אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֣ר he spake dābar עָלַי֮ concerning ʿal לֵאמֹר֒ me, saying, ʾāmar אִם If ʾim יִשְׁמְר֨וּ take heed šāmar בָנֶ֜יךָ thy children bēn אֶת to ʾēt דַּרְכָּ֗ם their way, derek לָלֶ֤כֶת to walk hālak לְפָנַי֙ before pānîm בֶּֽאֱמֶ֔ת me in truth ʾemet בְּכָל with all kōl לְבָבָ֖ם their heart lēbāb וּבְכָל and with all kōl נַפְשָׁ֑ם their soul, nepeš לֵאמֹ֕ר thee (said ʾāmar לֹֽא there shall not lōʾ יִכָּרֵ֤ת fail kārat לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ he) a man ʾîš מֵעַ֖ל on ʿal כִּסֵּ֥א the throne kissēʾ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וְגַ֣ם Moreover gam אַתָּ֣ה thou ʾattâ יָדַ֡עְתָּ knowest yādaʿ אֵת֩ also ʾēt אֲשֶׁר what ʾăšer עָ֨שָׂה did ʿāśâ לִ֜י יוֹאָ֣ב Joab yôʾāb בֶּן the son bēn צְרוּיָ֗ה of Zeruiah ṣĕrûyâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר to me, what ʾăšer עָשָׂ֣ה he did ʿāśâ לִשְׁנֵֽי to the two šĕnayim שָׂרֵ֣י captains śar צִבְא֣וֹת of the hosts ṣābāʾ יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לְאַבְנֵ֨ר unto Abner ʾabnēr בֶּן the son bēn נֵ֜ר of Ner, nēr וְלַֽעֲמָשָׂ֤א and unto Amasa ʿămāśāʾ בֶן the son bēn יֶ֙תֶר֙ of Jether, yeter וַיַּ֣הַרְגֵ֔ם whom he slew, hārag וַיָּ֥שֶׂם and shed śûm דְּמֵֽי the blood dām מִלְחָמָ֖ה of war milḥāmâ בְּשָׁלֹ֑ם in peace, šālôm וַיִּתֵּ֞ן and put nātan דְּמֵ֣י the blood dām מִלְחָמָ֗ה of war milḥāmâ בַּחֲגֹֽרָתוֹ֙ upon his girdle ḥăgôr אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בְּמָתְנָ֔יו about his loins, mōten וּֽבְנַעֲל֖וֹ and in his shoes naʿal אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer בְּרַגְלָֽיו׃ on his feet. regel

וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ Do ʿāśâ כְּחָכְמָתֶ֑ךָ therefore according to thy wisdom, ḥokmâ וְלֹֽא and let not lōʾ תוֹרֵ֧ד go down yārad שֵֽׂיבָת֛וֹ his hoar head śêbâ בְּשָׁלֹ֖ם in peace. šālôm שְׁאֹֽל׃ to the grave šĕʾôl

וְלִבְנֵ֨י unto the sons bēn בַרְזִלַּ֤י of Barzillai barzillay הַגִּלְעָדִי֙ the Gileadite, gilʿādî תַּֽעֲשֶׂה But shew ʿāśâ חֶ֔סֶד kindness ḥēsēd וְהָי֖וּ and let them be hāyâ בְּאֹֽכְלֵ֣י of those that eat ʾākal שֻׁלְחָנֶ֑ךָ at thy table: šulḥān כִּי for kî כֵן֙ so kēn קָֽרְב֣וּ they came qārab אֵלַ֔י to ʾēl בְּבָרְחִ֕י me when I fled bāraḥ מִפְּנֵ֖י because pānîm אַבְשָׁל֥וֹם of Absalom ʾăbîšālôm אָחִֽיךָ׃ thy brother. ʾāḥ

וְהִנֵּ֣ה And, behold, hinnē עִ֠מְּךָ with ʿim שִֽׁמְעִ֨י thee Shimei šimʿî בֶן the son bēn גֵּרָ֥א of Gera, gērāʾ בֶן הַיְמִינִי֮ a Benjamite ben yĕmînî מִבַּחֻרִים֒ of Bahurim, baḥurîm וְה֤וּא which hûʾ קִֽלְלַ֙נִי֙ cursed qālal קְלָלָ֣ה curse qĕlālâ נִמְרֶ֔צֶת me with a grievous māraṣ בְּי֖וֹם in the day yôm לֶכְתִּ֣י when I went hālak מַֽחֲנָ֑יִם to Mahanaim: maḥănayim וְהֽוּא but he hûʾ יָרַ֤ד came down yārad לִקְרָאתִי֙ to meet qirʾâ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן me at Jordan, yardēn וָֽאֶשָּׁ֨בַֽע and I sware šābaʿ ל֤וֹ בַֽיהוָה֙ to him by the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar אִם I will not ʾim אֲמִֽיתְךָ֖ put thee to death mût בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ with the sword. ḥereb

וְעַתָּה֙ Now ʿattâ אַל ʾal תְּנַקֵּ֔הוּ therefore hold him not guiltless: nāqâ כִּ֛י for kî אִ֥ישׁ man, ʾîš חָכָ֖ם a wise ḥākām אָ֑תָּה thou ʾattâ וְיָֽדַעְתָּ֙ and knowest yādaʿ אֵ֣ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁ֣ר what ʾăšer תַּֽעֲשֶׂה thou oughtest to do ʿāśâ לּ֔וֹ וְהֽוֹרַדְתָּ֧ bring thou down yārad אֶת unto him; but his ʾēt שֵֽׂיבָת֛וֹ hoar head śêbâ בְּדָ֖ם with blood. dām שְׁאֽוֹל׃ to the grave šĕʾôl

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב slept šākab דָּוִ֖ד So David dāwid עִם with ʿim אֲבֹתָ֑יו his fathers, ʾāb וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר and was buried qābar בְּעִ֥יר in the city ʿîr דָּוִֽד׃ of David. dāwid

וְהַיָּמִ֗ים And the days yôm אֲשֶׁ֨ר that ʾăšer מָלַ֤ךְ reigned mālak דָּוִד֙ David dāwid עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אַרְבָּעִ֖ים forty ʾarbāʿîm שָׁנָ֑ה years: šāne בְּחֶבְר֤וֹן he in Hebron, ḥebrôn מָלַךְ֙ reigned mālak שֶׁ֣בַע seven šebaʿ שָׁנִ֔ים years šāne וּבִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֣ם he in Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim מָלַ֔ךְ reigned mālak שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים and thirty šĕlôšîm וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ and three šālôš שָׁנִֽים׃ years šāne

וּשְׁלֹמֹ֕ה Solomon šĕlōmō יָשַׁ֕ב Then sat yāšab עַל upon ʿal כִּסֵּ֖א the throne kissēʾ דָּוִ֣ד of David dāwid אָבִ֑יו his father; ʾāb וַתִּכֹּ֥ן was established kûn מַלְכֻת֖וֹ and his kingdom malkût מְאֹֽד׃ greatly. mĕʾōd

וַיָּבֹ֞א And came bôʾ אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֣הוּ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ בֶן the son of bēn חַגִּ֗ית Haggith ḥaggît אֶל to ʾēl בַּת שֶׁ֙בַע֙ Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ אֵם the mother ʾēm שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה of Solomon. šĕlōmō וַתֹּ֖אמֶר And she said, ʾāmar הֲשָׁל֣וֹם thou peaceably? šālôm בֹּאֶ֑ךָ Comest bôʾ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar שָׁלֽוֹם׃ Peaceably. šālôm

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר He said ʾāmar דָּבָ֥ר moreover, I have somewhat to say dābār לִ֖י אֵלָ֑יִךְ unto ʾēl וַתֹּ֖אמֶר thee. And she said, ʾāmar דַּבֵּֽר׃ Say on. dābar

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אַ֤תְּ Thou ʾattâ יָדַ֙עַתְּ֙ knowest yādaʿ כִּי that kî לִי֙ הָֽיְתָ֣ה was hāyâ הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה the kingdom mĕlûkâ וְעָלַ֞י on ʿal שָׂ֧מוּ set śûm כָֽל mine, and all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל Israel yiśrāʾēl פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם their faces pānîm לִמְלֹ֑ךְ me, that I should reign: mālak וַתִּסֹּ֤ב is turned about, sābab הַמְּלוּכָה֙ howbeit the kingdom mĕlûkâ וַתְּהִ֣י and is become hāyâ לְאָחִ֔י my brother's: ʾāḥ כִּ֥י for kî מֵֽיְהוָ֖ה his from the Lord. yĕhōwâ הָ֥יְתָה it was hāyâ לּֽוֹ׃

וְעַתָּ֗ה And now ʿattâ שְׁאֵלָ֤ה petition šĕʾēlâ אַחַת֙ one ʾeḥād אָֽנֹכִי֙ I ʾānōkî שֹׁאֵ֣ל ask šāʾal מֵֽאִתָּ֔ךְ of ʾēt אַל not. ʾal תָּשִׁ֖בִי thee, deny šûb אֶת ʾēt פָּנָ֑י me pānîm וַתֹּ֥אמֶר And she said ʾāmar אֵלָ֖יו unto ʾēl דַּבֵּֽר׃ him, Say on. dābar

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אִמְרִי Speak, ʾāmar נָא֙ I pray thee, nāʾ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֣ה unto Solomon šĕlōmō הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek כִּ֥י (for kî לֹֽא he will not lōʾ יָשִׁ֖יב say nay,) šûb אֶת ʾēt פָּנָ֑יִךְ pānîm וְיִתֶּן thee nātan לִ֛י that he give אֶת ʾēt אֲבִישַׁ֥ג me ʾăbîšag הַשּֽׁוּנַמִּ֖ית Abishag šûnammît לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ the Shunammite to wife. ʾiššâ

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר And said, ʾāmar בַּת שֶׁ֖בַע Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ ט֑וֹב Well; ṭôb אָֽנֹכִ֕י I ʾānōkî אֲדַבֵּ֥ר will speak dābar עָלֶ֖יךָ for thee ʿal אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king. melek

וַתָּבֹ֤א therefore went bôʾ בַת שֶׁ֙בַע֙ Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה Solomon, šĕlōmō לְדַבֶּר to speak dābar ל֖וֹ עַל unto him for ʿal אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֑הוּ Adonijah. ʾădōniyyâ וַיָּקָם֩ rose up qûm הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ And the king melek לִקְרָאתָ֜הּ to meet qirʾâ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֣חוּ her, and bowed himself šāḥâ לָ֗הּ וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ unto her, and sat down yāšab עַל on ʿal כִּסְא֔וֹ his throne, kissēʾ וַיָּ֤שֶׂם to be set śûm כִּסֵּא֙ and caused a seat kissēʾ לְאֵ֣ם mother; ʾēm הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ for the king's melek וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב and she sat yāšab לִֽימִינֽוֹ׃ on his right hand. yāmîn

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר Then she said, ʾāmar שְׁאֵלָ֨ה petition šĕʾēlâ אַחַ֤ת one ʾeḥād קְטַנָּה֙ small qāṭān אָֽנֹכִי֙ I ʾānōkî שֹׁאֶ֣לֶת desire of thee; šāʾal מֵֽאִתָּ֔ךְ ʾēt אַל not ʾal תָּ֖שֶׁב say nay. šûb אֶת ʾēt פָּנָ֑י me pānîm וַיֹּֽאמֶר said ʾāmar לָ֤הּ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ And the king melek שַֽׁאֲלִ֣י unto her, Ask on, šāʾal אִמִּ֔י my mother: ʾēm כִּ֥י for kî לֹֽא not lōʾ אָשִׁ֖יב I will say nay. šûb אֶת ʾēt פָּנָֽיִךְ׃ thee pānîm

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר And she said, ʾāmar יֻתַּ֖ן be given nātan אֶת Let ʾēt אֲבִישַׁ֣ג Abishag ʾăbîšag הַשֻּֽׁנַמִּ֑ית the Shunammite šûnammît לַאֲדֹֽנִיָּ֥הוּ to Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ אָחִ֖יךָ thy brother ʾāḥ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ to wife. ʾiššâ

וַיַּעַן֩ answered ʿānâ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ And king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה Solomon šĕlōmō וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar לְאִמּ֗וֹ unto his mother, ʾēm וְלָמָה֩ And why mâ אַ֨תְּ dost thou ʾattâ שֹׁאֶ֜לֶת ask šāʾal אֶת ʾēt אֲבִישַׁ֤ג Abishag ʾăbîšag הַשֻּֽׁנַמִּית֙ the Shunammite šûnammît לַאֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ for Adonijah? ʾădōniyyâ וְשַֽׁאֲלִי ask šāʾal לוֹ֙ אֶת for him ʾēt הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה the kingdom mĕlûkâ כִּ֛י also; for kî ה֥וּא he hûʾ אָחִ֖י brother; ʾāḥ הַגָּד֣וֹל elder gādôl מִמֶּ֑נִּי mine min וְלוֹ֙ וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֣ר even for him, and for Abiathar ʾebyātār הַכֹּהֵ֔ן the priest, kōhēn וּלְיוֹאָ֖ב and for Joab yôʾāb בֶּן the son bēn צְרוּיָֽה׃ of Zeruiah. ṣĕrûyâ

וַיִּשָּׁבַע֙ sware šābaʿ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ Then king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה Solomon šĕlōmō בַּֽיהוָ֖ה by the Lord, yĕhōwâ לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar כֹּ֣ה so kō יַֽעֲשֶׂה do ʿāśâ לִּ֤י אֱלֹהִים֙ God ʾĕlōhîm וְכֹ֣ה kō יוֹסִ֔יף to me, and more also, yāsap כִּ֣י if kî בְנַפְשׁ֔וֹ against his own life. nepeš דִּבֶּר֙ have not spoken dābar אֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֖ר word dābār הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וְעַתָּ֗ה Now ʿattâ חַי liveth, ḥay יְהוָה֙ therefore, the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer הֱכִינַ֗נִי hath established kûn וַיּֽוֹשִׁיבַ֙ינִי֙ me, and set yāšab עַל me on ʿal כִּסֵּא֙ the throne kissēʾ דָּוִ֣ד of David dāwid אָבִ֔י my father, ʾāb וַֽאֲשֶׁ֧ר and who ʾăšer עָֽשָׂה hath made ʿāśâ לִ֛י בַּ֖יִת me an house, bayit כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר as ʾăšer דִּבֵּ֑ר he promised, dābar כִּ֣י kî הַיּ֔וֹם this day. yôm יוּמַ֖ת shall be put to death mût אֲדֹֽנִיָּֽהוּ׃ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ sent šālaḥ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ And king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה Solomon šĕlōmō בְּיַ֖ד by the hand yād בְּנָיָ֣הוּ of Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֑ע of Jehoiada; yĕhôyādāʿ וַיִּפְגַּע and he fell pāgaʿ בּ֖וֹ וַיָּמֹֽת׃ upon him that he died. mût

וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֨ר And unto Abiathar ʾebyātār הַכֹּהֵ֜ן the priest kōhēn אָמַ֣ר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ the king, melek עֲנָתֹת֙ thee to Anathoth, ʿănātôt לֵ֣ךְ Get hālak עַל unto ʿal שָׂדֶ֔יךָ thine own fields; śāde כִּ֛י for kî אִ֥ישׁ worthy ʾîš מָ֖וֶת of death: māwet אָ֑תָּה thou ʾattâ וּבַיּ֨וֹם time yôm הַזֶּ֜ה at this ze לֹ֣א but I will not lōʾ אֲמִיתֶ֗ךָ put thee to death, mût כִּֽי because kî נָשָׂ֜אתָ thou barest nāśāʾ אֶת ʾēt אֲר֨וֹן the ark ʾārôn אֲדֹנָ֤י of the Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִֹה֙ God yĕhōwi לִפְנֵי֙ before pānîm דָּוִ֣ד David dāwid אָבִ֔י my father, ʾāb וְכִ֣י and because kî הִתְעַנִּ֔יתָ thou hast been afflicted ʿānâ בְּכֹ֥ל in all kōl אֲשֶֽׁר wherein ʾăšer הִתְעַנָּ֖ה was afflicted. ʿānâ אָבִֽי׃ my father ʾāb

וַיְגָ֤רֶשׁ thrust out gāraš שְׁלֹמֹה֙ So Solomon šĕlōmō אֶת ʾēt אֶבְיָתָ֔ר Abiathar ʾebyātār מִֽהְי֥וֹת from being hāyâ כֹּהֵ֖ן priest kōhēn לַֽיהוָ֑ה unto the Lord; yĕhōwâ לְמַלֵּא֙ that he might fulfil mālēʾ אֶת ʾēt דְּבַ֣ר the word dābār יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֛ר he spake dābar עַל concerning ʿal בֵּ֥ית the house bayit עֵלִ֖י of Eli ʿēlî בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃ in Shiloh. šîlō

וְהַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ Then tidings šĕmûʿâ בָּ֣אָה came bôʾ עַד to ʿad יוֹאָ֔ב Joab: yôʾāb כִּ֣י for kî יוֹאָ֗ב Joab yôʾāb נָטָה֙ had turned nāṭâ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after ʾaḥar אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֔ה Adonijah, ʾădōniyyâ וְאַֽחֲרֵ֥י after ʾaḥar אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם Absalom. ʾăbîšālôm לֹ֣א not lōʾ נָטָ֑ה though he turned nāṭâ וַיָּ֤נָס fled nûs יוֹאָב֙ And Joab yôʾāb אֶל unto ʾēl אֹ֣הֶל the tabernacle ʾōhel יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַֽיַּחֲזֵ֖ק and caught hold ḥāzaq בְּקַרְנ֥וֹת on the horns qeren הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ of the altar. mizbēaḥ

וַיֻּגַּ֞ד And it was told nāgad לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה Solomon šĕlōmō כִּ֣י that kî נָ֤ס was fled nûs יוֹאָב֙ Joab yôʾāb אֶל unto ʾēl אֹ֣הֶל the tabernacle ʾōhel יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord; yĕhōwâ וְהִנֵּ֖ה and, behold, hinnē אֵ֣צֶל by ʾēṣel הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ the altar. mizbēaḥ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה Then Solomon šĕlōmō אֶת ʾēt בְּנָיָ֧הוּ Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֛ע of Jehoiada, yĕhôyādāʿ לֵאמֹ֖ר saying, ʾāmar לֵ֥ךְ Go, hālak פְּגַע fall upon him. pāgaʿ בּֽוֹ׃

וַיָּבֹ֨א came bôʾ בְנָיָ֜הוּ And Benaiah bĕnāyâ אֶל to ʾēl אֹ֣הֶל the tabernacle ʾōhel יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר and said ʾāmar אֵלָ֜יו unto ʾēl כֹּֽה him, Thus kō אָמַ֤ר saith ʾāmar הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king, melek צֵ֔א Come forth. yāṣāʾ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר׀ And he said, ʾāmar לֹ֖א Nay; lōʾ כִּ֣י but kî פֹ֣ה here. pō אָמ֑וּת I will die mût וַיָּ֨שֶׁב brought šûb בְּנָיָ֤הוּ And Benaiah bĕnāyâ אֶת ʾēt הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek דָּבָ֣ר word dābār לֵאמֹ֔ר again, saying, ʾāmar כֹּֽה Thus kō דִבֶּ֥ר said dābar יוֹאָ֖ב Joab, yôʾāb וְכֹ֥ה and thus kō עָנָֽנִי׃ he answered me. ʿānâ

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar ל֣וֹ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ And the king melek עֲשֵׂה֙ unto him, Do ʿāśâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר as ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֔ר he hath said, dābar וּפְגַע and fall pāgaʿ בּ֖וֹ וּקְבַרְתּ֑וֹ upon him, and bury qābar וַֽהֲסִירֹ֣תָ׀ him; that thou mayest take away sûr דְּמֵ֣י blood, dām חִנָּ֗ם the innocent ḥinnām אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer שָׁפַ֣ךְ shed, šāpak יוֹאָ֔ב Joab yôʾāb מֵֽעָלַ֕י from ʿal וּמֵעַ֖ל me, and from ʿal בֵּ֥ית the house bayit אָבִֽי׃ of my father. ʾāb

וְהֵשִׁיב֩ shall return šûb יְהוָ֨ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt דָּמ֜וֹ his blood dām עַל upon ʿal רֹאשׁ֗וֹ his own head, rōš אֲשֶׁ֣ר who ʾăšer פָּגַ֣ע fell pāgaʿ בִּשְׁנֵֽי upon two šĕnayim אֲ֠נָשִׁים men ʾîš צַדִּקִ֨ים more righteous ṣaddîq וְטֹבִ֤ים and better ṭôb מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ than min וַיַּֽהַרְגֵ֣ם he, and slew hārag בַּחֶ֔רֶב them with the sword, ḥereb וְאָבִ֥י my father ʾāb דָוִ֖ד David dāwid לֹ֣א not lōʾ יָדָ֑ע knowing yādaʿ אֶת ʾēt אַבְנֵ֤ר Abner ʾabnēr בֶּן the son bēn נֵר֙ of Ner, nēr שַׂר captain śar צְבָ֣א of the host ṣābāʾ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְאֶת ʾēt עֲמָשָׂ֥א and Amasa ʿămāśāʾ בֶן the son bēn יֶ֖תֶר of Jether, yeter שַׂר captain śar צְבָ֥א of the host ṣābāʾ יְהוּדָֽה׃ of Judah. yĕhûdâ

וְשָׁ֤בוּ shall therefore return šûb דְמֵיהֶם֙ Their blood dām בְּרֹ֣אשׁ upon the head rōš יוֹאָ֔ב of Joab, yôʾāb וּבְרֹ֥אשׁ and upon the head rōš זַרְע֖וֹ of his seed zeraʿ לְעֹלָ֑ם for ever: ʿôlām וּלְדָוִ֡ד but upon David, dāwid וּ֠לְזַרְעוֹ and upon his seed, zeraʿ וּלְבֵית֨וֹ and upon his house, bayit וּלְכִסְא֜וֹ and upon his throne, kissēʾ יִֽהְיֶ֥ה shall there be hāyâ שָׁל֛וֹם peace šālôm עַד for ʿad עוֹלָ֖ם ever ʿôlām מֵעִ֥ם from ʿim יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וַיַּ֗עַל went up, ʿālâ בְּנָיָ֙הוּ֙ So Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶּן the son bēn יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע of Jehoiada yĕhôyādāʿ וַיִּפְגַּע and fell pāgaʿ בּ֖וֹ וַיְמִתֵ֑הוּ upon him, and slew mût וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר him: and he was buried qābar בְּבֵית֖וֹ in his own house bayit בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ in the wilderness. midbār

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן put nātan הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ And the king melek אֶת ʾēt בְּנָיָ֧הוּ Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֛ע of Jehoiada yĕhôyādāʿ תַּחְתָּ֖יו in his room taḥat עַל over ʿal הַצָּבָ֑א the host: ṣābāʾ וְאֶת ʾēt צָד֤וֹק and Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵן֙ the priest kōhēn נָתַ֣ן put nātan הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ did the king melek תַּ֖חַת in the room taḥat אֶבְיָתָֽר׃ of Abiathar. ʾebyātār

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח sent šālaḥ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ And the king melek וַיִּקְרָ֣א and called qārāʾ לְשִׁמְעִ֔י for Shimei, šimʿî וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ בְּֽנֵה unto him, Build bānâ לְךָ֥ בַ֙יִת֙ thee an house bayit בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם in Jerusalem, yĕrûšālaim וְיָֽשַׁבְתָּ֖ and dwell yāšab שָׁ֑ם there, šām וְלֹֽא lōʾ תֵצֵ֥א and go not forth yāṣāʾ מִשָּׁ֖ם thence šām אָ֥נֶה any ʾān וָאָֽנָה׃ whither. ʾān

וְהָיָ֣ה׀ For it shall be, hāyâ בְּי֣וֹם on the day yôm צֵֽאתְךָ֗ thou goest out, yāṣāʾ וְעָֽבַרְתָּ֙ and passest over ʿābar אֶת ʾēt נַ֣חַל the brook naḥal קִדְר֔וֹן Kidron, qidrôn יָדֹ֥עַ thou shalt know yādaʿ תֵּדַ֖ע for certain yādaʿ כִּ֣י that kî מ֣וֹת thou shalt surely mût תָּמ֑וּת die: mût דָּֽמְךָ֖ thy blood dām יִֽהְיֶ֥ה shall be hāyâ בְרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃ upon thine own head. rōš

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar שִׁמְעִ֤י And Shimei šimʿî לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ unto the king, melek ט֣וֹב good: ṭôb הַדָּבָ֔ר The saying dābār כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר as ʾăšer דִּבֶּר֙ hath said, dābar אֲדֹנִ֣י my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king melek כֵּ֖ן so kēn יַֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה do. ʿāśâ עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ will thy servant ʿebed וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב dwelt yāšab שִׁמְעִ֛י And Shimei šimʿî בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם in Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim יָמִ֥ים days. yôm רַבִּֽים׃ many rab

וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass hāyâ מִקֵּץ֙ at the end qēṣ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ of three šālôš שָׁנִ֔ים years, šāne וַיִּבְרְח֤וּ ran away bāraḥ שְׁנֵֽי that two šĕnayim עֲבָדִים֙ of the servants ʿebed לְשִׁמְעִ֔י of Shimei šimʿî אֶל unto ʾēl אָכִ֥ישׁ Achish ʾăkîš בֶּֽן son bēn מַעֲכָ֖ה of Maachah maʿăkâ מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek גַּ֑ת of Gath. gat וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ And they told nāgad לְשִׁמְעִי֙ Shimei, šimʿî לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֥ה Behold, hinnē עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ thy servants ʿebed בְּגַֽת׃ in Gath. gat

וַיָּ֣קָם arose, qûm שִׁמְעִ֗י And Shimei šimʿî וַֽיַּחֲבֹשׁ֙ and saddled ḥābaš אֶת ʾēt חֲמֹר֔וֹ his ass, ḥămôr וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ and went hālak גַּ֙תָה֙ to Gath gat אֶל to ʾēl אָכִ֔ישׁ Achish ʾăkîš לְבַקֵּ֖שׁ to seek bāqaš אֶת ʾēt עֲבָדָ֑יו his servants: ʿebed וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ went, hālak שִׁמְעִ֔י and Shimei šimʿî וַיָּבֵ֥א and brought bôʾ אֶת ʾēt עֲבָדָ֖יו his servants ʿebed מִגַּֽת׃ from Gath. gat

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד And it was told nāgad לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה Solomon šĕlōmō כִּֽי that kî הָלַ֨ךְ had gone hālak שִׁמְעִ֧י Shimei šimʿî מִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֛ם from Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim גַּ֖ת to Gath, gat וַיָּשֹֽׁב׃ and was come again. šûb

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ And the king melek וַיִּקְרָ֣א and called qārāʾ לְשִׁמְעִ֗י for Shimei, šimʿî וַיֹּ֨אמֶר and said ʾāmar אֵלָ֜יו unto ʾēl הֲל֧וֹא him, Did I not lōʾ הִשְׁבַּעְתִּ֣יךָ make thee to swear šābaʿ בַֽיהוָ֗ה by the Lord, yĕhōwâ וָֽאָעִ֤ד and protested ʿûd בְּךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר unto thee, saying, ʾāmar בְּי֣וֹם on the day yôm צֵֽאתְךָ֗ thou goest out, yāṣāʾ וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֙ and walkest abroad hālak אָ֣נֶה any ʾān וָאָ֔נָה whither, ʾān יָדֹ֥עַ Know yādaʿ תֵּדַ֖ע for a certain, yādaʿ כִּ֣י that kî מ֣וֹת thou shalt surely mût תָּמ֑וּת die? mût וַתֹּ֧אמֶר and thou saidst ʾāmar אֵלַ֛י unto ʾēl ט֥וֹב good. ṭôb הַדָּבָ֖ר me, The word dābār שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ I have heard šāmaʿ

וּמַדּ֕וּעַ Why maddûaʿ לֹ֣א then hast thou not lōʾ שָׁמַ֔רְתָּ kept šāmar אֵ֖ת ʾēt שְׁבֻעַ֣ת the oath šĕbûʿâ יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְאֶת ʾēt הַמִּצְוָ֖ה and the commandment miṣwâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer צִוִּ֥יתִי I have charged ṣāwâ עָלֶֽיךָ׃ thee with? ʿal

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ The king melek אֶל moreover to ʾēl שִׁמְעִ֗י Shimei, šimʿî אַתָּ֤ה Thou ʾattâ יָדַ֙עְתָּ֙ knowest yādaʿ אֵ֣ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הָֽרָעָ֗ה the wickedness raʿ אֲשֶׁ֤ר which ʾăšer יָדַע֙ is privy to, yādaʿ לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ thine heart lēbāb אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer עָשִׂ֖יתָ thou didst ʿāśâ לְדָוִ֣ד to David dāwid אָבִ֑י my father: ʾāb וְהֵשִׁ֧יב shall return šûb יְהוָ֛ה therefore the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt רָעָֽתְךָ֖ thy wickedness raʿ בְּרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃ upon thine own head; rōš

וַיְצַ֣ו commanded ṣāwâ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ So the king melek אֶת ʾēt בְּנָיָ֙הוּ֙ Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶּן the son bēn יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע of Jehoiada; yĕhôyādāʿ וַיֵּצֵ֕א which went out, yāṣāʾ וַיִּפְגַּע and fell pāgaʿ בּ֖וֹ וַיָּמֹ֑ת upon him, that he died. mût וְהַמַּמְלָכָ֥ה And the kingdom mamlākâ נָכ֖וֹנָה was established kûn בְּיַד in the hand yād שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ of Solomon. šĕlōmō
