בָּעֵ֣ת time ʿēt הַהִ֔יא At that hûʾ חָלָ֖ה fell sick. ḥālâ אֲבִיָּ֥ה Abijah ʾăbiyyâ בֶן the son bēn יָֽרָבְעָֽם׃ of Jeroboam yorobʿām

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יָֽרָבְעָ֜ם And Jeroboam yorobʿām לְאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ to his wife, ʾiššâ ק֤וּמִי Arise, qûm נָא֙ I pray thee, nāʾ וְהִשְׁתַּנִּ֔ית and disguise thyself, šānâ וְלֹ֣א be not lōʾ יֵֽדְע֔וּ known yādaʿ כִּי that kî אַ֖תְּי thou ʾattâ אֵ֣שֶׁת to be the wife ʾiššâ יָֽרָבְעָ֑ם of Jeroboam; yorobʿām וְהָלַ֣כְתְּ and get hālak שִׁלֹ֗ה thee to Shiloh: šîlō הִנֵּה behold, hinnē שָׁם֙ there šām אֲחִיָּ֣ה Ahijah ʾăḥiyyâ הַנָּבִ֔יא the prophet, nābîʾ הֽוּא which hûʾ דִבֶּ֥ר told dābar עָלַ֛י ʿal לְמֶ֖לֶךְ me that king melek עַל over ʿal הָעָ֥ם people. ʿam הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וְלָקַ֣חַתְּ And take lāqaḥ בְּ֠יָדֵךְ with thee yād עֲשָׂרָ֨ה ten ʿeśer לֶ֧חֶם loaves, leḥem וְנִקֻּדִ֛ים and cracknels, niqqud וּבַקְבֻּ֥ק and a cruse baqbuq דְּבַ֖שׁ of honey, dĕbaš וּבָ֣את and go bôʾ אֵלָ֑יו to ʾēl ה֚וּא him: he hûʾ יַגִּ֣יד shall tell nāgad לָ֔ךְ מַה thee what mâ יִּֽהְיֶ֖ה shall become hāyâ לַנָּֽעַר׃ of the child. naʿar

וַתַּ֤עַשׂ did so, ʿāśâ כֵּן֙ kēn אֵ֣שֶׁת wife ʾiššâ יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם And Jeroboam's yorobʿām וַתָּ֙קָם֙ and arose, qûm וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ and went hālak שִׁלֹ֔ה to Shiloh, šîlō וַתָּבֹ֖א and came bôʾ בֵּ֣ית to the house bayit אֲחִיָּ֑ה of Ahijah. ʾăḥiyyâ וַֽאֲחִיָּ֙הוּ֙ But Ahijah ʾăḥiyyâ לֹֽא not lōʾ יָכֹ֣ל could yākōl לִרְא֔וֹת see; rāʾâ כִּ֛י for kî קָ֥מוּ were set qûm עֵינָ֖יו his eyes ʿayin מִשֵּׂיבֽוֹ׃ by reason of his age. śêb

וַֽיהוָ֞ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אָמַ֣ר said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl אֲחִיָּ֗הוּ Ahijah, ʾăḥiyyâ הִנֵּ֣ה Behold, hinnē אֵ֣שֶׁת the wife ʾiššâ יָֽרָבְעָ֡ם of Jeroboam yorobʿām בָּאָ֣ה cometh bôʾ לִדְרֹשׁ֩ to ask dāraš דָּבָ֨ר a thing dābār מֵֽעִמְּךָ֤ of ʿim אֶל thee for ʾēl בְּנָהּ֙ her son; bēn כִּֽי for kî חֹלֶ֣ה sick: ḥālâ ה֔וּא he hûʾ כָּזֹ֥ה thus zō וְכָזֶ֖ה and thus ze תְּדַבֵּ֣ר shalt thou say dābar אֵלֶ֑יהָ unto ʾēl וִיהִ֣י her: for it shall be, hāyâ כְבֹאָ֔הּ when she cometh in, bôʾ וְהִ֖יא that she hûʾ מִתְנַכֵּרָֽה׃ shall feign herself another nākar

וַיְהִי֩ And it was hāyâ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ heard šāmaʿ אֲחִיָּ֜הוּ when Ahijah ʾăḥiyyâ אֶת ʾēt ק֤וֹל the sound qôl רַגְלֶ֙יהָ֙ of her feet, regel בָּאָ֣ה as she came in bôʾ בַפֶּ֔תַח at the door, petaḥ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר that he said, ʾāmar בֹּ֖אִי Come in, bôʾ אֵ֣שֶׁת thou wife ʾiššâ יָֽרָבְעָ֑ם of Jeroboam; yorobʿām לָ֣מָּה why mâ זֶּ֗ה ze אַ֚תְּ ʾattâ מִתְנַכֵּרָ֔ה feignest thou thyself another? nākar וְאָ֣נֹכִ֔י for I ʾānōkî שָׁל֥וּחַ sent šālaḥ אֵלַ֖יִךְ to ʾēl קָשָֽׁה׃ thee heavy qāše

לְכִ֞י Go, hālak אִמְרִ֣י tell ʾāmar לְיָֽרָבְעָ֗ם Jeroboam, yorobʿām כֹּֽה Thus kō אָמַ֤ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl יַ֛עַן Forasmuch yaʿan אֲשֶׁ֥ר ʾăšer הֲרִֽמֹתִ֖יךָ as I exalted rûm מִתּ֣וֹךְ thee from among tāwek הָעָ֑ם the people, ʿam וָֽאֶתֶּנְךָ֣ and made nātan נָגִ֔יד thee prince nāgîd עַ֖ל over ʿal עַמִּ֥י my people ʿam יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel, yiśrāʾēl

וָֽאֶקְרַ֤ע And rent away qāraʿ אֶת ʾēt הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ the kingdom mamlākâ מִבֵּ֣ית from the house bayit דָּוִ֔ד of David, dāwid וָֽאֶתְּנֶ֖הָ and gave nātan לָ֑ךְ וְלֹֽא it thee: and thou hast not lōʾ הָיִ֜יתָ been hāyâ כְּעַבְדִּ֣י as my servant ʿebed דָוִ֗ד David, dāwid אֲשֶׁר֩ who ʾăšer שָׁמַ֨ר kept šāmar מִצְוֹתַ֜י my commandments, miṣwâ וַֽאֲשֶׁר and who ʾăšer הָלַ֤ךְ followed hālak אַֽחֲרַי֙ ʾaḥar בְּכָל me with all kōl לְבָב֔וֹ his heart, lēbāb לַֽעֲשׂ֕וֹת to do ʿāśâ רַ֖ק only raq הַיָּשָׁ֥ר right yāšār בְּעֵינָֽי׃ in mine eyes; ʿayin

וַתָּ֣רַע evil rāʿaʿ לַֽעֲשׂ֔וֹת But hast done ʿāśâ מִכֹּ֖ל above all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer הָי֣וּ were hāyâ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ before pānîm וַתֵּ֡לֶךְ thee: for thou hast gone hālak וַתַּֽעֲשֶׂה and made ʿāśâ לְּךָ֩ אֱלֹהִ֨ים gods, ʾĕlōhîm אֲחֵרִ֤ים thee other ʾaḥēr וּמַסֵּכוֹת֙ and molten images, massēkâ לְהַכְעִיסֵ֔נִי to provoke me to anger, kaʿas וְאֹתִ֥י ʾēt הִשְׁלַ֖כְתָּ and hast cast šālak אַֽחֲרֵ֥י me behind ʾaḥar גַוֶּֽךָ׃ thy back: gǎw

לָכֵ֗ן Therefore, kēn הִנְנִ֨י behold, hēn מֵבִ֤יא I will bring bôʾ רָעָה֙ evil raʿ אֶל upon ʾēl בֵּ֣ית the house bayit יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם of Jeroboam, yorobʿām וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י and will cut off kārat לְיָֽרָבְעָם֙ from Jeroboam yorobʿām מַשְׁתִּ֣ין him that pisseth šātan בְּקִ֔יר against the wall, qîr עָצ֥וּר him that is shut up ʿāṣār וְעָז֖וּב and left ʿāzab בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל in Israel, yiśrāʾēl וּבִֽעַרְתִּי֙ and will take away bāʿar אַֽחֲרֵ֣י the remnant ʾaḥar בֵית of the house bayit יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם of Jeroboam, yorobʿām כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר as ʾăšer יְבַעֵ֥ר a man taketh away bāʿar הַגָּלָ֖ל dung, gālāl עַד till ʿad תֻּמּֽוֹ׃ it be all gone. tāmam

הַמֵּ֨ת Him that dieth mût לְיָֽרָבְעָ֤ם of Jeroboam yorobʿām בָּעִיר֙ in the city ʿîr יֹֽאכְל֣וּ eat; ʾākal הַכְּלָבִ֔ים shall the dogs keleb וְהַמֵּת֙ and him that dieth mût בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה in the field śāde יֹֽאכְל֖וּ eat: ʾākal ע֣וֹף shall the fowls ʿôp הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם of the air šāmayim כִּ֥י for kî יְהוָ֖ה the Lord yĕhōwâ דִּבֵּֽר׃ hath spoken dābar

וְאַ֥תְּ thou ʾattâ ק֖וּמִי Arise qûm לְכִ֣י therefore, get hālak לְבֵיתֵ֑ךְ thee to thine own house: bayit בְּבֹאָ֥ה enter bôʾ רַגְלַ֛יִךְ when thy feet regel הָעִ֖ירָה into the city, ʿîr וּמֵ֥ת shall die. mût הַיָּֽלֶד׃ the child yeled

וְסָֽפְדוּ shall mourn sāpad ל֤וֹ כָל And all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Israel yiśrāʾēl וְקָֽבְר֣וּ for him, and bury qābar אֹת֔וֹ ʾēt כִּי him: for kî זֶ֣ה ze לְבַדּ֔וֹ he only bad יָבֹ֥א shall come bôʾ לְיָֽרָבְעָ֖ם of Jeroboam yorobʿām אֶל to ʾēl קָ֑בֶר the grave, qeber יַ֣עַן because yaʿan נִמְצָא in him there is found māṣāʾ ב֞וֹ דָּבָ֣ר thing dābār ט֗וֹב good ṭôb אֶל toward ʾēl יְהוָ֛ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֥י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl בְּבֵ֥ית in the house bayit יָֽרָבְעָֽם׃ of Jeroboam. yorobʿām

וְהֵקִים֩ shall raise him up qûm יְהוָ֨ה Moreover the Lord yĕhōwâ ל֥וֹ מֶ֙לֶךְ֙ a king melek עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁ֥ר who ʾăšer יַכְרִ֛ית shall cut off kārat אֶת ʾēt בֵּ֥ית the house bayit יָֽרָבְעָ֖ם of Jeroboam yorobʿām זֶ֣ה that ze הַיּ֑וֹם day: yôm וּמֶ֖ה but what? mâ גַּם even gam עָֽתָּה׃ now. ʿattâ

וְהִכָּ֨ה shall smite nākâ יְהוָ֜ה For the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר as ʾăšer יָנ֣וּד is shaken nûd הַקָּנֶה֮ a reed qāne בַּמַּיִם֒ in the water, mayim וְנָתַ֣שׁ and he shall root up nātaš אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל Israel yiśrāʾēl מֵ֠עַל out of ʿal הָֽאֲדָמָ֨ה land, ʾădāmâ הַטּוֹבָ֤ה good ṭôb הַזֹּאת֙ this zōt אֲשֶׁ֤ר which ʾăšer נָתַן֙ he gave nātan לַאֲב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם to their fathers, ʾāb וְזֵרָ֖ם and shall scatter zārâ מֵעֵ֣בֶר them beyond ʿēber לַנָּהָ֑ר the river, nāhār יַ֗עַן because yaʿan אֲשֶׁ֤ר ʾăšer עָשׂוּ֙ they have made ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt אֲשֵׁ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם their groves, ʾăšērâ מַכְעִיסִ֖ים to anger. kaʿas אֶת ʾēt יְהוָֽה׃ provoking the Lord yĕhōwâ

וְיִתֵּ֖ן And he shall give up nātan אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiśrāʾēl בִּגְלַ֞ל because gālāl חַטֹּ֤אות of the sins ḥaṭṭāʾâ יָֽרָבְעָם֙ of Jeroboam, yorobʿām אֲשֶׁ֣ר who ʾăšer חָטָ֔א did sin, ḥāṭāʾ וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר and who ʾăšer הֶֽחֱטִ֖יא to sin. ḥāṭāʾ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ made Israel yiśrāʾēl

וַתָּ֙קָם֙ arose, qûm אֵ֣שֶׁת wife ʾiššâ יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם And Jeroboam's yorobʿām וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ and departed, hālak וַתָּבֹ֣א and came bôʾ תִרְצָ֑תָה to Tirzah: tirṣâ הִ֛יא when she hûʾ בָּאָ֥ה came bôʾ בְסַף to the threshold sap הַבַּ֖יִת of the door, bayit וְהַנַּ֥עַר the child naʿar מֵֽת׃ died; mût

וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ And they buried qābar אֹת֛וֹ ʾēt וַיִּסְפְּדוּ mourned sāpad ל֖וֹ כָּל him; and all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel yiśrāʾēl כִּדְבַ֤ר for him, according to the word dābār יְהוָה֙ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֔ר he spake dābar בְּיַד by the hand yād עַבְדּ֖וֹ of his servant ʿebed אֲחִיָּ֥הוּ Ahijah ʾăḥiyyâ הַנָּבִֽיא׃ the prophet. nābîʾ

וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ And the rest yeter דִּבְרֵ֣י of the acts dābār יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם of Jeroboam, yorobʿām אֲשֶׁ֥ר how ʾăšer נִלְחַ֖ם he warred, lāḥam וַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר and how ʾăšer מָלָ֑ךְ he reigned, mālak הִנָּ֣ם behold, hinnē כְּתוּבִ֗ים they written kātab עַל in ʿal סֵ֛פֶר the book sēper דִּבְרֵ֥י of the chronicles dābār הַיָּמִ֖ים yôm לְמַלְכֵ֥י of the kings melek יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וְהַיָּמִים֙ And the days yôm אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer מָלַ֣ךְ reigned mālak יָֽרָבְעָ֔ם Jeroboam yorobʿām עֶשְׂרִ֥ים and twenty ʿeśrîm וּשְׁתַּ֖יִם two šĕnayim שָׁנָ֑ה years: šāne וַיִּשְׁכַּב֙ and he slept šākab עִם with ʿim אֲבֹתָ֔יו his fathers, ʾāb וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ reigned mālak נָדָ֥ב and Nadab nādāb בְּנ֖וֹ his son bēn תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ in his stead. taḥat

וּרְחַבְעָם֙ And Rehoboam rĕḥabʿām בֶּן the son bēn שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה of Solomon šĕlōmō מָלַ֖ךְ reigned mālak בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה in Judah. yĕhûdâ בֶּן old bēn אַרְבָּעִ֣ים forty ʾarbāʿîm וְאַחַ֣ת and one ʾeḥād שָׁנָה֩ years šāne רְחַבְעָ֨ם Rehoboam rĕḥabʿām בְּמָלְכ֜וֹ when he began to reign, mālak וּֽשֲׁבַ֨ע seventeen šebaʿ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה ʿāśār שָׁנָ֣ה׀ years šāne מָלַ֣ךְ and he reigned mālak בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֗ם in Jerusalem, yĕrûšālaim הָ֠עִיר the city ʿîr אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer בָּחַ֨ר did choose bāḥar יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ לָשׂ֨וּם to put śûm אֶת ʾēt שְׁמ֥וֹ his name šēm שָׁם֙ there. šām מִכֹּל֙ out of all kōl שִׁבְטֵ֣י the tribes šēbeṭ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְשֵׁ֣ם name šēm אִמּ֔וֹ And his mother's ʾēm נַֽעֲמָ֖ה Naamah naʿămâ הָֽעַמֹּנִֽית׃ an Ammonitess. ʿammônît

וַיַּ֧עַשׂ did ʿāśâ יְהוּדָ֛ה And Judah yĕhûdâ הָרַ֖ע evil raʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י in the sight ʿayin יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיְקַנְא֣וּ and they provoked him to jealousy qānāʾ אֹת֗וֹ ʾēt מִכֹּל֙ above all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer עָשׂ֣וּ had done. ʿāśâ אֲבֹתָ֔ם their fathers ʾāb בְּחַטֹּאתָ֖ם with their sins ḥaṭṭāʾâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer חָטָֽאוּ׃ they had committed, ḥāṭāʾ

וַיִּבְנ֨וּ built bānâ גַם also gam הֵ֧מָּה For they hēm לָהֶ֛ם hēm בָּמ֥וֹת them high places, bāmâ וּמַצֵּב֖וֹת and images, maṣṣēbâ וַֽאֲשֵׁרִ֑ים and groves, ʾăšērâ עַ֚ל on ʿal כָּל every kōl גִּבְעָ֣ה hill, gibʿâ גְבֹהָ֔ה high gābōah וְתַ֖חַת and under taḥat כָּל every kōl עֵ֥ץ tree. ʿēṣ רַֽעֲנָֽן׃ green raʿănān

וְגַם also gam קָדֵ֖שׁ sodomites qādēš הָיָ֣ה And there were hāyâ בָאָ֑רֶץ in the land: ʾereṣ עָשׂ֗וּ they did ʿāśâ כְּכֹל֙ according to all kōl הַתּֽוֹעֲבֹ֣ת the abominations tôʿēba הַגּוֹיִ֔ם of the nations gôy אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer הוֹרִ֣ישׁ cast out yāraš יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ מִפְּנֵ֖י before pānîm בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וַיְהִ֛י And it came to pass hāyâ בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה year šāne הַֽחֲמִישִׁ֖ית in the fifth ḥămîšî לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ of king melek רְחַבְעָ֑ם Rehoboam, rĕḥabʿām עָלָ֛ה came up ʿālâ שִׁושַׁ֥ק Shishak šîšaq מֶֽלֶךְ king melek מִצְרַ֖יִם of Egypt miṣrayim עַל against ʿal יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ Jerusalem: yĕrûšālaim

וַיִּקַּ֞ח And he took away lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt אֹֽצְר֣וֹת the treasures ʾôṣār בֵּית of the house bayit יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְאֶת ʾēt אֽוֹצְרוֹת֙ and the treasures ʾôṣār בֵּ֣ית house; bayit הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ of the king's melek וְאֶת ʾēt הַכֹּ֖ל all: kōl לָקָ֑ח he even took away lāqaḥ וַיִּקַּח֙ and he took away lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl מָֽגִנֵּ֣י the shields māgēn הַזָּהָ֔ב of gold zāhāb אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה had made. ʿāśâ שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ Solomon šĕlōmō

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ made ʿāśâ הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ And king melek רְחַבְעָם֙ Rehoboam rĕḥabʿām תַּחְתָּ֔ם in their stead taḥat מָֽגִנֵּ֖י shields, māgēn נְחֹ֑שֶׁת brasen nĕḥōšet וְהִפְקִ֗יד and committed pāqad עַל unto ʿal יַד֙ the hands yād שָׂרֵ֣י of the chief śar הָֽרָצִ֔ים of the guard, rûṣ הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים which kept šāmar פֶּ֖תַח the door petaḥ בֵּ֥ית house. bayit הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ of the king's melek

וַיְהִ֛י And it was hāyâ מִדֵּי when day בֹ֥א went bôʾ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek בֵּ֣ית into the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ יִשָּׂאוּם֙ bare nāśāʾ הָֽרָצִ֔ים that the guard rûṣ וֶֽהֱשִׁיב֖וּם them, and brought them back šûb אֶל into ʾēl תָּ֥א chamber. tāʾ הָֽרָצִֽים׃ the guard rûṣ

וְיֶ֛תֶר Now the rest yeter דִּבְרֵ֥י of the acts dābār רְחַבְעָ֖ם of Rehoboam, rĕḥabʿām וְכָל and all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֑ה he did, ʿāśâ הֲלֹא not lōʾ הֵ֣מָּה they hēm כְתוּבִ֗ים written kātab עַל in ʿal סֵ֛פֶר the book sēper דִּבְרֵ֥י of the chronicles dābār הַיָּמִ֖ים yôm לְמַלְכֵ֥י of the kings melek יְהוּדָֽה׃ of Judah? yĕhûdâ

וּמִלְחָמָ֨ה war milḥāmâ הָֽיְתָ֧ה And there was hāyâ בֵין between bên רְחַבְעָ֛ם Rehoboam rĕḥabʿām וּבֵ֥ין bên יָֽרָבְעָ֖ם and Jeroboam yorobʿām כָּל all kōl הַיָּמִֽים׃ days. yôm

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ב slept šākab רְחַבְעָ֜ם And Rehoboam rĕḥabʿām עִם with ʿim אֲבֹתָ֗יו his fathers, ʾāb וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר and was buried qābar עִם with ʿim אֲבֹתָיו֙ his fathers ʾāb בְּעִ֣יר in the city ʿîr דָּוִ֔ד of David. dāwid וְשֵׁ֣ם name šēm אִמּ֔וֹ And his mother's ʾēm נַֽעֲמָ֖ה Naamah naʿămâ הָֽעַמֹּנִ֑ית an Ammonitess. ʿammônît וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ reigned mālak אֲבִיָּ֥ם And Abijam ʾăbiyyām בְּנ֖וֹ his son bēn תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ in his stead. taḥat
