  1. וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֥ד stood up ʿāmad שָׂטָ֖ן And Satan śāṭān עַל against ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיָּ֙סֶת֙ and provoked sût אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֔יד David dāwid לִמְנ֖וֹת to number mānâ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl
  2. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֤יד And David dāwid אֶל to ʾēl יוֹאָב֙ Joab yôʾāb וְאֶל and to ʾēl שָׂרֵ֣י the rulers śar הָעָ֔ם of the people, ʿam לְכ֗וּ Go, hālak סִפְרוּ֙ number sāpar אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl מִבְּאֵ֥ר שֶׁ֖בַע from Beer-sheba bĕʾēr šebaʿ וְעַד even to ʿad דָּ֑ן Dan; dān וְהָבִ֣יאוּ and bring bôʾ אֵלַ֔י of them to ʾēl וְאֵֽדְעָ֖ה me, that I may know yādaʿ אֶת ʾēt מִסְפָּרָֽם׃ the number mispār
  3. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר answered, ʾāmar יוֹאָ֗ב And Joab yôʾāb יוֹסֵף֩ so many more yāsap יְהוָ֨ה The Lord yĕhōwâ עַל ʿal עַמּ֤וֹ׀ make his people ʿam כָּהֵם֙ as they hēm מֵאָ֣ה an hundred mēʾâ פְעָמִ֔ים times paʿam הֲלֹא֙ they not lōʾ אֲדֹנִ֣י but, my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek כֻּלָּ֥ם all kōl לַֽאדֹנִ֖י my lord's ʾādôn לַֽעֲבָדִ֑ים servants? ʿebed לָ֣מָּה why יְבַקֵּ֥שׁ require bāqaš זֹאת֙ this thing? zōt אֲדֹנִ֔י then doth my lord ʾādôn לָ֛מָּה why יִֽהְיֶ֥ה will he be hāyâ לְאַשְׁמָ֖ה a cause of trespass ʾašmâ לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ to Israel? yiśrāʾēl
  4. וּדְבַר word dābār הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ Nevertheless the king's melek חָזַ֣ק prevailed ḥāzaq עַל against ʿal יוֹאָ֑ב Joab. yôʾāb וַיֵּצֵ֣א departed, yāṣāʾ יוֹאָ֗ב Wherefore Joab yôʾāb וַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ֙ and went hālak בְּכָל throughout all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיָּבֹ֖א and came bôʾ יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ to Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim
  5. וַיִּתֵּ֥ן gave nātan יוֹאָ֛ב And Joab yôʾāb אֶת ʾēt מִסְפַּ֥ר the sum mispār מִפְקַד of the number mipqād הָעָ֖ם of the people ʿam אֶל unto ʾēl דָּוִ֑יד David. dāwid וַיְהִ֣י were hāyâ כָֽל And all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶ֣לֶף a thousand ʾelep אֲלָפִים֩ thousand ʾelep וּמֵאָ֨ה and an hundred mēʾâ אֶ֤לֶף thousand ʾelep אִישׁ֙ men ʾîš שֹׁ֣לֵֽף that drew šālap חֶ֔רֶב sword: ḥereb וִֽיהוּדָ֕ה and Judah yĕhûdâ אַרְבַּע֩ four ʾarbaʿ מֵא֨וֹת hundred mēʾâ וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים threescore and ten šibʿîm אֶ֛לֶף thousand ʾelep אִ֖ישׁ men ʾîš שֹׁ֥לֵֽף that drew šālap חָֽרֶב׃ sword. ḥereb
  6. וְלֵוִי֙ But Levi lēwî וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן and Benjamin binyāmîn לֹ֥א he not lōʾ פָקַ֖ד counted pāqad בְּתוֹכָ֑ם among tāwek כִּֽי them: for נִתְעַ֥ב was abominable taʿāb דְּבַר word dābār הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king's melek אֶת ʾēt יוֹאָֽב׃ to Joab. yôʾāb
  7. וַיֵּ֙רַע֙ was displeased yāraʿ בְּעֵינֵ֣י ʿayin הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים And God ʾĕlōhîm עַל with ʿal הַדָּבָ֖ר thing; dābār הַזֶּ֑ה this ze וַיַּ֖ךְ therefore he smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ Israel. yiśrāʾēl
  8. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִיד֙ And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים God, ʾĕlōhîm חָטָ֣אתִֽי I have sinned ḥāṭāʾ מְאֹ֔ד greatly, mĕʾōd אֲשֶׁ֥ר because ʾăšer עָשִׂ֖יתִי I have done ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֣ר thing: dābār הַזֶּ֑ה this ze וְעַתָּ֗ה but now, ʿattâ הַֽעֲבֶר do away ʿābar נָא֙ I beseech thee, nāʾ אֶת ʾēt עֲו֣וֹן the iniquity ʿāwōn עַבְדְּךָ֔ of thy servant; ʿebed כִּ֥י for נִסְכַּ֖לְתִּי foolishly. sākal מְאֹֽד׃ I have done very mĕʾōd
  9. וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר spake dābar יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl גָּ֔ד Gad, gād חֹזֵ֥ה seer, ḥōze דָוִ֖יד David's dāwid לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar
  10. לֵךְ֩ Go hālak וְדִבַּרְתָּ֙ and tell dābar אֶל ʾēl דָּוִ֜יד David, dāwid לֵאמֹ֗ר saying, ʾāmar כֹּ֚ה Thus אָמַ֣ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ שָׁל֕וֹשׁ thee three šālôš אֲנִ֖י I ʾănî נֹטֶ֣ה offer nāṭâ עָלֶ֑יךָ ʿal בְּחַר choose bāḥar לְךָ֛ אַחַ֥ת thee one ʾeḥād מֵהֵ֖נָּה of them, hēnnâ וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה that I may do unto thee. ʿāśâ לָּֽךְ׃
  11. וַיָּ֥בֹא came bôʾ גָ֖ד So Gad gād אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִ֑יד David, dāwid וַיֹּ֥אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֛וֹ כֹּֽה unto him, Thus אָמַ֥ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֖ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ קַבֶּל Choose thee qābal לָֽךְ׃
  12. אִם Either ʾim שָׁל֨וֹשׁ three šālôš שָׁנִ֜ים years' šāne רָעָ֗ב famine; rāʿāb וְאִם or ʾim שְׁלֹשָׁ֨ה three šālôš חֳדָשִׁ֜ים months ḥōdeš נִסְפֶּ֥ה to be destroyed sāpâ מִפְּנֵי before pānîm צָרֶיךָ֮ thy foes, ṣar וְחֶ֣רֶב while that the sword ḥereb אוֹיְבֶ֣יךָ׀ of thine enemies ʾōyēb לְמַשֶּׂגֶת֒ overtaketh nāśag וְאִם or else ʾim שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת three šālôš יָ֠מִים days yôm חֶ֣רֶב the sword ḥereb יְהוָ֤ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְדֶ֙בֶר֙ even the pestilence, deber בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the land, ʾereṣ וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ and the angel mălʾok יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ מַשְׁחִ֖ית destroying šāḥat בְּכָל throughout all kōl גְּב֣וּל the coasts gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl וְעַתָּ֣ה Now ʿattâ רְאֵ֔ה therefore advise rāʾâ מָֽה thyself what אָשִׁ֥יב I shall bring again šûb אֶת ʾēt שֹֽׁלְחִ֖י to him that sent me. šālaḥ דָּבָֽר׃ word dābār
  13. וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֛יד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl גָּ֖ד Gad, gād צַר strait: ṣārar לִ֣י מְאֹ֑ד I am in a great mĕʾōd אֶפְּלָה let me fall nāpal נָּ֣א now nāʾ בְיַד into the hand yād יְהוָ֗ה of the Lord; yĕhōwâ כִּֽי for רַבִּ֤ים great rab רַֽחֲמָיו֙ his mercies: raḥam מְאֹ֔ד very mĕʾōd וּבְיַד into the hand yād אָדָ֖ם of man. ʾādām אַל but let me not ʾal אֶפֹּֽל׃ fall nāpal
  14. וַיִּתֵּ֧ן sent nātan יְהוָ֛ה So the Lord yĕhōwâ דֶּ֖בֶר pestilence deber בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל upon Israel: yiśrāʾēl וַיִּפֹּל֙ and there fell nāpal מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl שִׁבְעִ֥ים seventy šibʿîm אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep אִֽישׁ׃ men. ʾîš
  15. וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ sent šālaḥ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֨ים׀ And God ʾĕlōhîm מַלְאָ֥ךְ׀ an angel mălʾok לִֽירוּשָׁלִַם֮ unto Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim לְהַשְׁחִיתָהּ֒ to destroy šāḥat וּכְהַשְׁחִ֗ית it: and as he was destroying, šāḥat רָאָ֤ה beheld, rāʾâ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם and he repented him nāḥam עַל of ʿal הָֽרָעָ֔ה the evil, raʿ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר and said ʾāmar לַמַּלְאָ֤ךְ to the angel mălʾok הַמַּשְׁחִית֙ that destroyed, šāḥat רַ֔ב It is enough, rab עַתָּ֖ה now ʿattâ הֶ֣רֶף stay rāpâ יָדֶ֑ךָ thine hand. yād וּמַלְאַ֤ךְ And the angel mălʾok יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ עֹמֵ֔ד stood ʿāmad עִם by ʿim גֹּ֖רֶן the threshingfloor gōren אָרְנָ֥ן of Ornan ʾornān הַיְבוּסִֽי׃ the Jebusite. yĕbûsî
  16. וַיִּשָּׂ֨א lifted up nāśāʾ דָוִ֜יד And David dāwid אֶת ʾēt עֵינָ֗יו his eyes, ʿayin וַיַּ֞רְא and saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt מַלְאַ֤ךְ the angel mălʾok יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ עֹמֵ֗ד stand ʿāmad בֵּ֤ין between bên הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ the earth ʾereṣ וּבֵ֣ין bên הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם and the heaven, šāmayim וְחַרְבּ֤וֹ sword ḥereb שְׁלוּפָה֙ having a drawn šālap בְּיָד֔וֹ in his hand yād נְטוּיָ֖ה stretched out nāṭâ עַל over ʿal יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim וַיִּפֹּ֨ל fell nāpal דָּוִ֧יד Then David dāwid וְהַזְּקֵנִ֛ים and the elders zāqēn מְכֻסִּ֥ים clothed kāsâ בַּשַּׂקִּ֖ים in sackcloth, śaq עַל upon ʿal פְּנֵיהֶֽם׃ their faces. pānîm
  17. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֣יד And David dāwid אֶֽל unto ʾēl הָאֱלֹהִ֡ים God, ʾĕlōhîm הֲלֹא֩ not lōʾ אֲנִ֨י I ʾănî אָמַ֜רְתִּי commanded ʾāmar לִמְנ֣וֹת to be numbered? mānâ בָּעָ֗ם the people ʿam וַֽאֲנִי even I ʾănî ה֤וּא it hûʾ אֲשֶׁר is that ʾăšer חָטָ֙אתִי֙ have sinned ḥāṭāʾ וְהָרֵ֣עַ and done evil rāʿaʿ הֲרֵע֔וֹתִי indeed; rāʿaʿ וְאֵ֥לֶּה but these ʾēlle הַצֹּ֖אן sheep, ṣōn מֶ֣ה what עָשׂ֑וּ have they done? ʿāśâ יְהוָ֣ה O Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהַ֗י my God, ʾĕlōhîm תְּהִ֨י be hāyâ נָ֤א I pray thee, nāʾ יָֽדְךָ֙ let thine hand, yād בִּ֚י וּבְבֵ֣ית house; bayit אָבִ֔י on me, and on my father's ʾāb וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ on thy people, ʿam לֹ֥א but not lōʾ לְמַגֵּפָֽה׃ that they should be plagued. maggēpâ
  18. וּמַלְאַ֧ךְ Then the angel mălʾok יְהוָ֛ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אָמַ֥ר commanded ʾāmar אֶל ʾēl גָּ֖ד Gad gād לֵאמֹ֣ר to say ʾāmar לְדָוִ֑יד to David, dāwid כִּ֣י׀ that יַֽעֲלֶ֣ה should go up, ʿālâ דָוִ֗יד David dāwid לְהָקִ֤ים and set up qûm מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֔ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּגֹ֖רֶן in the threshingfloor gōren אָרְנָ֥ן of Ornan ʾornān הַיְבֻסִֽי׃ the Jebusite. yĕbûsî
  19. וַיַּ֤עַל went up ʿālâ דָּוִיד֙ And David dāwid בִּדְבַר at the saying dābār גָּ֔ד of Gad, gād אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֖ר he spake dābar בְּשֵׁ֥ם in the name šēm יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ
  20. וַיָּ֣שָׁב turned back, šûb אָרְנָ֗ן And Ornan ʾornān וַיַּרְא֙ and saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הַמַּלְאָ֔ךְ the angel; mălʾok וְאַרְבַּ֧עַת and his four ʾarbaʿ בָּנָ֛יו sons bēn עִמּ֖וֹ with ʿim מִֽתְחַבְּאִ֑ים him hid themselves. ḥābāʾ וְאָרְנָ֖ן Now Ornan ʾornān דָּ֥שׁ was threshing dûš חִטִּֽים׃ wheat. ḥiṭṭâ
  21. וַיָּבֹ֥א came bôʾ דָוִ֖יד And as David dāwid עַד to ʿad אָרְנָ֑ן Ornan, ʾornān וַיַּבֵּ֤ט looked nābaṭ אָרְנָן֙ Ornan ʾornān וַיַּ֣רְא and saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt דָּוִ֔יד David, dāwid וַיֵּצֵא֙ and went out yāṣāʾ מִן of min הַגֹּ֔רֶן the threshingfloor, gōren וַיִּשְׁתַּ֧חוּ and bowed himself šāḥâ לְדָוִ֛יד to David dāwid אַפַּ֖יִם with face ʾap אָֽרְצָה׃ to the ground. ʾereṣ
  22. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜יד Then David dāwid אֶל to ʾēl אָרְנָ֗ן Ornan, ʾornān תְּנָה Grant nātan לִּי֙ מְק֣וֹם me the place māqôm הַגֹּ֔רֶן of threshingfloor, gōren וְאֶבְנֶה that I may build bānâ בּ֥וֹ מִזְבֵּ֖חַ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֑ה therein unto the Lord: yĕhōwâ בְּכֶ֤סֶף price: kesep מָלֵא֙ it me for the full mālēʾ תְּנֵ֣הוּ thou shalt grant nātan לִ֔י וְתֵֽעָצַ֥ר may be stayed ʿāṣār הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה that the plague maggēpâ מֵעַ֥ל from ʿal הָעָֽם׃ the people. ʿam
  23. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אָרְנָ֤ן And Ornan ʾornān אֶל unto ʾēl דָּוִיד֙ David, dāwid קַֽח Take lāqaḥ לָ֔ךְ וְיַ֛עַשׂ do ʿāśâ אֲדֹנִ֥י to thee, and let my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek הַטּ֣וֹב good ṭôb בְּעֵינָ֑יו in his eyes: ʿayin רְאֵה֩ lo, rāʾâ נָתַ֨תִּי I give nātan הַבָּקָ֜ר the oxen bāqār לָֽעֹל֗וֹת for burnt offerings, ʿōlâ וְהַמּֽוֹרִגִּ֧ים and the threshing instruments môrag לָֽעֵצִ֛ים for wood, ʿēṣ וְהַֽחִטִּ֥ים and the wheat ḥiṭṭâ לַמִּנְחָ֖ה for the meat offering; minḥâ הַכֹּ֥ל it all. kōl נָתָֽתִּי׃ I give nātan
  24. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ And king melek דָּוִיד֙ David dāwid לְאָרְנָ֔ן to Ornan, ʾornān לֹ֕א Nay; lōʾ כִּֽי but קָנֹ֥ה I will verily qānâ אֶקְנֶ֖ה buy qānâ בְּכֶ֣סֶף price: kesep מָלֵ֑א it for the full mālēʾ כִּ֠י for לֹֽא I will not lōʾ אֶשָּׂ֤א take nāśāʾ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer לְךָ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה thine for the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְהַֽעֲל֥וֹת nor offer ʿālâ עוֹלָ֖ה burnt offerings ʿōlâ חִנָּֽם׃ without cost. ḥinnām
  25. וַיִּתֵּ֥ן gave nātan דָּוִ֛יד So David dāwid לְאָרְנָ֖ן to Ornan ʾornān בַּמָּק֑וֹם for the place māqôm שִׁקְלֵ֣י shekels šeqel זָהָ֔ב of gold zāhāb מִשְׁקָ֖ל by weight. mišqāl שֵׁ֥שׁ six šēš מֵאֽוֹת׃ hundred mēʾâ
  26. וַיִּבֶן֩ built bānâ שָׁ֨ם there šām דָּוִ֤יד And David dāwid מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ an altar mizbēaḥ לַֽיהוָ֔ה unto the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיַּ֥עַל and offered ʿālâ עֹל֖וֹת burnt offerings ʿōlâ וּשְׁלָמִ֑ים and peace offerings, šelem וַיִּקְרָא֙ and called qārāʾ אֶל upon ʾēl יְהוָ֔ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֤הוּ and he answered ʿānâ בָאֵשׁ֙ by fire ʾēš מִן him from min הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם heaven šāmayim עַ֖ל upon ʿal מִזְבַּ֥ח the altar mizbēaḥ הָֽעֹלָֽה׃ of burnt offering. ʿōlâ
  27. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר commanded ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ לַמַּלְאָ֔ךְ the angel; mălʾok וַיָּ֥שֶׁב again šûb חַרְבּ֖וֹ and he put up his sword ḥereb אֶל into ʾēl נְדָנָֽהּ׃ the sheath thereof. nādān
  28. בָּעֵ֣ת time ʿēt הַהִ֔יא At that hûʾ בִּרְא֤וֹת saw rāʾâ דָּוִיד֙ when David dāwid כִּֽי that עָנָ֣הוּ had answered ʿānâ יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּגֹ֖רֶן him in the threshingfloor gōren אָרְנָ֣ן of Ornan ʾornān הַיְבוּסִ֑י the Jebusite, yĕbûsî וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח then he sacrificed zābaḥ שָֽׁם׃ there. šām
  29. וּמִשְׁכַּ֣ן For the tabernacle miškān יְ֠הוָה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer עָשָׂ֨ה made ʿāśâ מֹשֶׁ֧ה Moses mōše בַמִּדְבָּ֛ר in the wilderness, midbār וּמִזְבַּ֥ח and the altar mizbēaḥ הָֽעוֹלָ֖ה of the burnt offering, ʿōlâ בָּעֵ֣ת season ʿēt הַהִ֑יא at that hûʾ בַּבָּמָ֖ה in the high place bāmâ בְּגִבְעֽוֹן׃ at Gibeon. gibʿôn
  30. וְלֹֽא not lōʾ יָכֹ֥ל could yākōl דָּוִ֛יד But David dāwid לָלֶ֥כֶת go hālak לְפָנָ֖יו before pānîm לִדְרֹ֣שׁ it to inquire dāraš אֱלֹהִ֑ים of God: ʾĕlōhîm כִּ֣י for נִבְעַ֔ת he was afraid bāʿat מִפְּנֵ֕י because pānîm חֶ֖רֶב of the sword ḥereb מַלְאַ֥ךְ of the angel mălʾok יְהוָֽה׃ of the Lord. yĕhōwâ
