וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said, ʾāmar דָּוִ֜יד And David dāwid אֶֽעֱשֶׂה I will shew ʿāśâ חֶ֣סֶד׀ kindness ḥēsēd עִם unto ʿim חָנ֣וּן Hanun ḥānûn בֶּן the son bēn נָחָ֗שׁ of Nahash, nāḥoš כִּֽי because kî עָשָׂ֨ה shewed ʿāśâ אָבִ֤יו his father ʾāb עִמִּי֙ to ʿim חֶ֔סֶד kindness ḥēsēd וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח sent šālaḥ דָּוִ֛יד me. And David dāwid מַלְאָכִ֖ים messengers mălʾok לְנַֽחֲמ֣וֹ to comfort nāḥam עַל him concerning ʿal אָבִ֑יו his father. ʾāb וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ came bôʾ עַבְדֵ֨י So the servants ʿebed דָוִ֜יד of David dāwid אֶל into ʾēl אֶ֧רֶץ the land ʾereṣ בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn עַמּ֛וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn אֶל to ʾēl חָנ֖וּן Hanun, ḥānûn לְנַֽחֲמֽוֹ׃ to comfort him. nāḥam

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֩ said ʾāmar שָׂרֵ֨י But the princes śar בְנֵֽי of the children bēn עַמּ֜וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn לְחָנ֗וּן to Hanun, ḥānûn הַֽמְכַבֵּ֨ד doth honour kābad דָּוִ֤יד thou that David dāwid אֶת ʾēt אָבִ֙יךָ֙ thy father, ʾāb בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ Thinkest ʿayin כִּֽי that kî שָׁלַ֥ח he hath sent šālaḥ לְךָ֖ מְנַֽחֲמִ֑ים comforters nāḥam הֲלֹ֡א unto thee? are not lōʾ בַּֽ֠עֲבוּר thee for ʿābûr לַחְקֹ֨ר to search, ḥāqar וְלַֽהֲפֹ֤ךְ and to overthrow, hāpak וּלְרַגֵּל֙ and to spy out rāgal הָאָ֔רֶץ the land? ʾereṣ בָּ֥אוּ come bôʾ עֲבָדָ֖יו his servants ʿebed אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ unto ʾēl

וַיִּקַּ֨ח took lāqaḥ חָנ֜וּן Wherefore Hanun ḥānûn אֶת ʾēt עַבְדֵ֤י servants, ʿebed דָוִיד֙ David's dāwid וַֽיְגַלְּחֵ֔ם and shaved gālaḥ וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת them, and cut off kārat אֶת ʾēt מַדְוֵיהֶ֛ם their garments medew בַּחֵ֖צִי in the midst ḥēṣî עַד hard by ʿad הַמִּפְשָׂעָ֑ה their buttocks, mipśāʿâ וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃ and sent them away. šālaḥ

וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֩ Then there went hālak וַיַּגִּ֨ידוּ and told nāgad לְדָוִ֤יד David dāwid עַל how ʿal הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ the men ʾĕnôš וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח were served. And he sent šālaḥ לִקְרָאתָ֔ם to meet qirʾâ כִּֽי them: for kî הָי֥וּ were hāyâ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים the men ʾĕnôš נִכְלָמִ֣ים ashamed. kālam מְאֹ֑ד greatly mĕʾōd וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ And the king melek שְׁב֣וּ Tarry yāšab בִֽירֵח֔וֹ at Jericho yĕrîḥô עַ֛ד until ʿad אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer יְצַמַּ֥ח be grown, ṣāmaḥ זְקַנְכֶ֖ם your beards zāqān וְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ and return. šûb

וַיִּרְאוּ֙ saw rāʾâ בְּנֵ֣י And when the children bēn עַמּ֔וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn כִּ֥י that kî הִֽתְבָּאֲשׁ֖וּ they had made themselves odious bāʾaš עִם to ʿim דָּוִ֑יד David, dāwid וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח sent šālaḥ חָ֠נוּן Hanun ḥānûn וּבְנֵ֨י and the children bēn עַמּ֜וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn אֶ֣לֶף a thousand ʾelep כִּכַּר talents kikkār כֶּ֗סֶף of silver kesep לִשְׂכֹּ֣ר to hire śākar לָ֠הֶם מִן out of min אֲרַ֨ם נַֽהֲרַ֜יִם Mesopotamia, ʾăram nahărayim וּמִן and out of min אֲרַ֤ם Syria-maachah, ʾărām מַֽעֲכָה֙ maʿăkâ וּמִצּוֹבָ֔ה and out of Zobah. ṣôbāʾ רֶ֖כֶב them chariots rekeb וּפָֽרָשִֽׁים׃ and horsemen pāroš

וַיִּשְׂכְּר֣וּ So they hired śākar לָהֶ֡ם שְׁנַיִם֩ and two šĕnayim וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים thirty šĕlôšîm אֶ֜לֶף thousand ʾelep רֶ֗כֶב chariots, rekeb וְאֶת ʾēt מֶ֤לֶךְ and the king melek מַֽעֲכָה֙ of Maachah maʿăkâ וְאֶת ʾēt עַמּ֔וֹ and his people; ʿam וַיָּבֹ֕אוּ who came bôʾ וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ and pitched ḥānâ לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm מֵידְבָ֑א Medeba. mêdĕbāʾ וּבְנֵ֣י And the children bēn עַמּ֗וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn נֶֽאֶסְפוּ֙ gathered themselves together ʾāsap מֵעָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם from their cities, ʿîr וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ and came bôʾ לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ to battle. milḥāmâ

וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע heard šāmaʿ דָּוִ֑יד And when David dāwid וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ he sent šālaḥ אֶת ʾēt יוֹאָ֔ב Joab, yôʾāb וְאֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל and all kōl צָבָ֖א the host ṣābāʾ הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃ of the mighty men. gibbôr

וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙ came out, yāṣāʾ בְּנֵ֣י And the children bēn עַמּ֔וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn וַיַּֽעַרְכ֥וּ in array ʿārak מִלְחָמָ֖ה and put the battle milḥāmâ פֶּ֣תַח before the gate petaḥ הָעִ֑יר of the city: ʿîr וְהַמְּלָכִ֣ים and the kings melek אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בָּ֔אוּ were come bôʾ לְבַדָּ֖ם by themselves bad בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ in the field. śāde

וַיַּ֣רְא saw rāʾâ יוֹאָ֗ב Now when Joab yôʾāb כִּֽי that kî הָיְתָ֧ה was set hāyâ פְנֵי pānîm הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה the battle milḥāmâ אֵלָ֖יו against ʾēl פָּנִ֣ים him before pānîm וְאָח֑וֹר and behind, ʾāḥôr וַיִּבְחַ֗ר he chose out bāḥar מִכָּל of all kōl בָּחוּר֙ the choice bāḥar בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ and put in array ʿārak לִקְרַ֥את against qirʾâ אֲרָֽם׃ the Syrians. ʾărām

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar אִם If ʾim תֶּֽחֱזַ֤ק be too strong ḥāzaq מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ for min אֲרָ֔ם the Syrians ʾărām וְהָיִ֥יתָ hāyâ לִּ֖י לִתְשׁוּעָ֑ה me, then thou shalt help tĕšûʿâ וְאִם me: but if ʾim בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn עַמּ֛וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn יֶֽחֶזְק֥וּ be too strong ḥāzaq מִמְּךָ֖ for min וְהֽוֹשַׁעְתִּֽיךָ׃ thee, then I will help thee. yāšaʿ

חֲזַ֤ק Be of good courage, ḥāzaq וְנִֽתְחַזְּקָה֙ and let us behave ourselves valiantly ḥāzaq בְּעַד for bĕʿad עַמֵּ֔נוּ our people, ʿam וּבְעַ֖ד and for bĕʿad עָרֵ֣י the cities ʿîr אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ of our God: ʾĕlōhîm וַֽיהוָ֔ה and let the Lord yĕhōwâ הַטּ֥וֹב good ṭôb בְּעֵינָ֖יו in his sight. ʿayin יַֽעֲשֶֽׂה׃ do ʿāśâ

וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ him drew nigh nāgaš יוֹאָ֜ב So Joab yôʾāb וְהָעָ֧ם and the people ʿam אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עִמּ֛וֹ with ʿim לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm אֲרָ֖ם the Syrians ʾărām לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה unto the battle; milḥāmâ וַיָּנ֖וּסוּ and they fled nûs מִפָּנָֽיו׃ before him. pānîm

וּבְנֵ֨י And when the children bēn עַמּ֤וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn רָאוּ֙ saw rāʾâ כִּי that kî נָ֣ס were fled, nûs אֲרָ֔ם the Syrians ʾărām וַיָּנ֣וּסוּ fled nûs גַם likewise gam הֵ֗ם they hēm מִפְּנֵי֙ before pānîm אַבְשַׁ֣י Abishai ʾăbîšay אָחִ֔יו his brother, ʾāḥ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ and entered bôʾ הָעִ֑ירָה into the city. ʿîr וַיָּבֹ֥א came bôʾ יוֹאָ֖ב Then Joab yôʾāb יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ to Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim

וַיַּ֣רְא saw rāʾâ אֲרָ֗ם And when the Syrians ʾărām כִּ֣י that kî נִגְּפוּ֮ they were put to the worse nāgap לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ they sent šālaḥ מַלְאָכִ֔ים messengers, mălʾok וַיּוֹצִ֣יאוּ and drew forth yāṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt אֲרָ֔ם the Syrians ʾărām אֲשֶׁ֖ר that ʾăšer מֵעֵ֣בֶר beyond ʿēber הַנָּהָ֑ר the river: nāhār וְשׁוֹפַ֛ךְ and Shophach šôpok שַׂר the captain śar צְבָ֥א of the host ṣābāʾ הֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר of Hadarezer hădarʿezer לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ before them. pānîm

וַיֻּגַּ֣ד And it was told nāgad לְדָוִ֗יד David; dāwid וַיֶּֽאֱסֹ֤ף and he gathered ʾāsap אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽעֲבֹ֣ר and passed over ʿābar הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן Jordan, yardēn וַיָּבֹ֣א and came bôʾ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם upon ʾēl וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ them, and set in array ʿārak אֲלֵהֶ֑ם against ʾēl וַיַּֽעֲרֹ֨ךְ in array ʿārak דָּוִ֜יד them. So when David dāwid לִקְרַ֤את against qirʾâ אֲרָם֙ the Syrians, ʾărām מִלְחָמָ֔ה had put the battle milḥāmâ וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ they fought lāḥam עִמּֽוֹ׃ with him. ʿim

וַיָּ֣נָס fled nûs אֲרָם֮ But the Syrians ʾărām מִלִּפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַיַּֽהֲרֹ֨ג slew hārag דָּוִ֜יד and David dāwid מֵֽאֲרָ֗ם of the Syrians ʾărām שִׁבְעַ֤ת seven šebaʿ אֲלָפִים֙ thousand ʾelep רֶ֔כֶב chariots, rekeb וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים and forty ʾarbāʿîm אֶ֖לֶף thousand ʾelep אִ֣ישׁ footmen, ʾîš רַגְלִ֑י raglî וְאֵ֛ת ʾēt שׁוֹפַ֥ךְ Shophach šôpok שַֽׂר the captain śar הַצָּבָ֖א of the host. ṣābāʾ הֵמִֽית׃ and killed mût

וַיִּרְא֞וּ saw rāʾâ עַבְדֵ֣י And when the servants ʿebed הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר of Hadarezer hădarʿezer כִּ֤י that kî נִגְּפוּ֙ they were put to the worse nāgap לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּשְׁלִ֥ימוּ they made peace šālam עִם with ʿim דָּוִ֖יד David, dāwid וַיַּֽעַבְדֻ֑הוּ and became his servants: ʿābad וְלֹֽא neither lōʾ אָבָ֣ה would ʾābâ אֲרָ֔ם the Syrians ʾărām לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ help yāšaʿ אֶת ʾēt בְּנֵֽי the children bēn עַמּ֖וֹן of Ammon ʿammôn עֽוֹד׃ any more. ʿôd
