וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת year šāne אַרְבַּ֔ע in the fourth ʾarbaʿ לְדָרְיָ֖וֶשׁ Darius, dārĕyāwēš הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ of king melek הָיָ֨ה came hāyâ דְבַר the word dābār יְהוָ֜ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl זְכַרְיָ֗ה Zechariah zĕkaryâ בְּאַרְבָּעָ֛ה in the fourth ʾarbaʿ לַחֹ֥דֶשׁ month, ḥōdeš הַתְּשִׁעִ֖י of the ninth tĕšîʿî בְּכִסְלֵֽו׃ in Chisleu; kislēw

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ When they had sent šālaḥ בֵּֽית unto the house bayit אֵ֔ל of God ʾēl שַׂרְאֶ֕צֶר Sherezer šarʾeṣer וְרֶ֥גֶם and Regem-melech, regem מֶ֖לֶךְ melek וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֑יו and their men, ʾĕnôš לְחַלּ֖וֹת to pray ḥālâ אֶת ʾēt פְּנֵ֥י before pānîm יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord, yĕhōwâ

לֵאמֹ֗ר to speak ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ the priests kōhēn אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer לְבֵית in the house bayit יְהוָ֣ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֔וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ וְאֶל and to ʾēl הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים the prophets, nābîʾ לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הַֽאֶבְכֶּה֙ Should I weep bākâ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ month, ḥōdeš הַחֲמִשִׁ֔י in the fifth ḥămîšî הִנָּזֵ֕ר separating myself, nāzar כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר as ʾăšer עָשִׂ֔יתִי I have done ʿāśâ זֶ֖ה these ze כַּמֶּ֥ה so many mâ שָׁנִֽים׃ years? šāne

וַיְהִ֛י Then came hāyâ דְּבַר the word dābār יְהוָ֥ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ אֵלַ֥י unto ʾēl לֵאמֹֽר׃ me, saying, ʾāmar

אֱמֹר֙ Speak ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl עַ֣ם the people ʿam הָאָ֔רֶץ of the land, ʾereṣ וְאֶל and to ʾēl הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים the priests, kōhēn לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar כִּֽי When kî צַמְתֶּ֨ם ye fasted ṣûm וְסָפ֜וֹד and mourned sāpad בַּחֲמִישִׁ֣י in the fifth ḥămîšî וּבַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י and seventh šĕbîʿî וְזֶה֙ even those ze שִׁבְעִ֣ים seventy šibʿîm שָׁנָ֔ה years, šāne הֲצ֥וֹם did ye at all ṣûm צַמְתֻּ֖נִי fast unto me, to me? ṣûm אָֽנִי׃ ʾănî

וְכִ֥י And when kî תֹאכְל֖וּ ye did eat, ʾākal וְכִ֣י and when kî תִשְׁתּ֑וּ ye did drink, šātâ הֲל֤וֹא did not lōʾ אַתֶּם֙ ye ʾattâ הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים eat ʾākal וְאַתֶּ֖ם ʾattâ הַשֹּׁתִֽים׃ and drink šātâ

הֲל֣וֹא not lōʾ אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֗ים the words dābār אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer קָרָ֤א hath cried qārāʾ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ בְּיַד֙ by yād הַנְּבִיאִ֣ים prophets, nābîʾ הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֔ים the former riʾšôn בִּהְי֤וֹת was hāyâ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ when Jerusalem yĕrûšālaim יֹשֶׁ֣בֶת inhabited yāšab וּשְׁלֵוָ֔ה and in prosperity, šālēw וְעָרֶ֖יהָ and the cities ʿîr סְבִיבֹתֶ֑יהָ thereof round about her, sābîb וְהַנֶּ֥גֶב the south negeb וְהַשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה and the plain? šĕpēlâ יֹשֵֽׁב׃ when inhabited yāšab

וַֽיְהִי֙ came hāyâ דְּבַר And the word dābār יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl זְכַרְיָ֖ה Zechariah, zĕkaryâ לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

כֹּ֥ה Thus kō אָמַ֛ר speaketh ʾāmar יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar מִשְׁפַּ֤ט judgment, mišpāṭ אֱמֶת֙ true ʾemet שְׁפֹ֔טוּ Execute šāpaṭ וְחֶ֣סֶד mercy ḥēsēd וְרַֽחֲמִ֔ים and compassions raḥam עֲשׂ֖וּ and shew ʿāśâ אִ֥ישׁ every man ʾîš אֶת to ʾēt אָחִֽיו׃ his brother: ʾāḥ

וְאַלְמָנָ֧ה the widow, ʾalmānâ וְיָת֛וֹם nor the fatherless, yātôm גֵּ֥ר the stranger, gēr וְעָנִ֖י nor the poor; ʿānî אַֽל not ʾal תַּעֲשֹׁ֑קוּ And oppress ʿāšaq וְרָעַת֙ evil raʿ אִ֣ישׁ against ʾîš אָחִ֔יו his brother ʾāḥ אַֽל and let none ʾal תַּחְשְׁב֖וּ of you imagine ḥāšab בִּלְבַבְכֶֽם׃ in your heart. lēbāb

וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ But they refused māʾēn לְהַקְשִׁ֔יב to hearken, qāšab וַיִּתְּנ֥וּ and pulled away nātan כָתֵ֖ף the shoulder, kātēp סֹרָ֑רֶת sārar וְאָזְנֵיהֶ֖ם their ears, ʾōzen הִכְבִּ֥ידוּ and stopped kābad מִשְּׁמֽוֹעַ׃ that they should not hear. šāmaʿ

וְלִבָּ֞ם their hearts lēb שָׂ֣מוּ Yea, they made śûm שָׁמִ֗יר an adamant stone, šāmîr מִ֠שְּׁמוֹעַ lest they should hear šāmaʿ אֶת the ʾēt הַתּוֹרָ֤ה law, tôrâ וְאֶת from ʾēt הַדְּבָרִים֙ and the words dābār אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer שָׁלַ֜ח hath sent šālaḥ יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאוֹת֙ of hosts ṣābāʾ בְּרוּח֔וֹ in his spirit rûaḥ בְּיַ֖ד by yād הַנְּבִיאִ֣ים prophets: nābîʾ הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֑ים the former riʾšôn וַֽיְהִי֙ therefore came hāyâ קֶ֣צֶף wrath qeṣep גָּד֔וֹל a great gādôl מֵאֵ֖ת ʾēt יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאֽוֹת׃ of hosts. ṣābāʾ

וַיְהִ֥י Therefore it is come to pass, hāyâ כַאֲשֶׁר as ʾăšer קָרָ֖א he cried, qārāʾ וְלֹ֣א and they would not lōʾ שָׁמֵ֑עוּ hear; šāmaʿ כֵּ֤ן so kēn יִקְרְאוּ֙ they cried, qārāʾ וְלֹ֣א and I would not lōʾ אֶשְׁמָ֔ע hear, šāmaʿ אָמַ֖ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאֽוֹת׃ of hosts: ṣābāʾ

וְאֵ֣סָעֲרֵ֗ם But I scattered them with a whirlwind sāʿar עַ֤ל among ʿal כָּל all kōl הַגּוֹיִם֙ the nations gôy אֲשֶׁ֣ר whom ʾăšer לֹֽא not. lōʾ יְדָע֔וּם they knew yādaʿ וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ Thus the land ʾereṣ נָשַׁ֣מָּה desolate. šammâ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם after ʾaḥar מֵֽעֹבֵ֖ר them, that no man passed through ʿābar וּמִשָּׁ֑ב nor returned: šûb וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ for they laid śûm אֶֽרֶץ land ʾereṣ חֶמְדָּ֖ה the pleasant ḥemdâ לְשַׁמָּֽה׃ was desolate šāmēm
