ה֚וֹי Woe hôy אֲרִיאֵ֣ל to Ariel, ʾărîʾēl אֲרִיאֵ֔ל to Ariel, ʾărîʾēl קִרְיַ֖ת the city qiryâ חָנָ֣ה dwelt! ḥānâ דָוִ֑ד David dāwid סְפ֥וּ add sāpâ שָׁנָ֛ה ye year šāne עַל to ʿal שָׁנָ֖ה year; šāne חַגִּ֥ים sacrifices. ḥag יִנְקֹֽפוּ׃ let them kill nāqap

וַהֲצִיק֖וֹתִי Yet I will distress ṣûq לַֽאֲרִיאֵ֑ל Ariel, ʾărîʾēl וְהָיְתָ֤ה and there shall be hāyâ תַֽאֲנִיָּה֙ heaviness taʾăniyyâ וַֽאֲנִיָּ֔ה and sorrow: ʾăniyyâ וְהָ֥יְתָה and it shall be hāyâ לִּ֖י כַּאֲרִיאֵֽל׃ unto me as Ariel. ʾărîʾēl

וְחָנִ֥יתִי And I will camp ḥānâ כַדּ֖וּר thee round about, dûr עָלָ֑יִךְ against ʿal וְצַרְתִּ֤י and will lay siege ṣûr עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ against ʿal מֻצָּ֔ב thee with a mount, muṣṣāb וַהֲקִֽימֹתִ֥י and I will raise qûm עָלַ֖יִךְ against thee. ʿal מְצֻרֹֽת׃ forts mĕṣûrâ

וְשָׁפַלְתְּ֙ And thou shalt be brought down, šāpēl מֵאֶ֣רֶץ out of the ground, ʾereṣ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי shalt speak dābar וּמֵֽעָפָ֖ר out of the dust, ʿāpār תִּשַּׁ֣ח shall be low šāḥaḥ אִמְרָתֵ֑ךְ and thy speech ʾimrâ וְֽ֠הָיָה shall be, hāyâ כְּא֤וֹב as of one that hath a familiar spirit, ʾôb מֵאֶ֙רֶץ֙ out of the ground, ʾereṣ קוֹלֵ֔ךְ and thy voice qôl וּמֵעָפָ֖ר out of the dust. ʿāpār אִמְרָתֵ֥ךְ and thy speech ʾimrâ תְּצַפְצֵֽף׃ shall whisper ṣāpap

וְהָיָ֛ה shall be hāyâ כְּאָבָ֥ק dust, ʾābāq דַּ֖ק like small daq הֲמ֣וֹן Moreover the multitude hāmôn זָרָ֑יִךְ of thy strangers zûr וּכְמֹ֤ץ as chaff mōṣ עֹבֵר֙ that passeth away: ʿābar הֲמ֣וֹן and the multitude hāmôn עָֽרִיצִ֔ים of the terrible ones ʿārîṣ וְהָיָ֖ה yea, it shall be hāyâ לְפֶ֥תַע at an instant petaʿ פִּתְאֹֽם׃ suddenly. pitʾôm

מֵעִ֨ם of ʿim יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאוֹת֙ of hosts ṣābāʾ תִּפָּקֵ֔ד Thou shalt be visited pāqad בְּרַ֥עַם with thunder, raʿam וּבְרַ֖עַשׁ and with earthquake, raʿaš וְק֣וֹל noise, qôl גָּד֑וֹל and great gādôl סוּפָה֙ with storm sûpâ וּסְעָרָ֔ה and tempest, saʿar וְלַ֖הַב and the flame lahab אֵ֥שׁ fire. ʾēš אוֹכֵלָֽה׃ of devouring ʾākal

וְהָיָ֗ה her, shall be hāyâ כַּֽחֲלוֹם֙ as a dream ḥălôm חֲז֣וֹן vision. ḥāzôn לַ֔יְלָה of a night layil הֲמוֹן֙ And the multitude hāmôn כָּל of all kōl הַגּוֹיִ֔ם the nations gôy הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים that fight ṣābāʾ עַל against ʿal אֲרִיאֵ֑ל Ariel, ʾărîʾēl וְכָל even all kōl צֹבֶ֙יהָ֙ that fight ṣābāʾ וּמְצֹ֣דָתָ֔הּ against her and her munition, māṣôd וְהַמְּצִיקִ֖ים and that distress ṣûq לָֽהּ׃

וְהָיָ֡ה It shall even be hāyâ כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ as when ʾăšer יַחֲלֹ֨ם dreameth, ḥālam הָרָעֵ֜ב an hungry rāʿēb וְהִנֵּ֣ה and, behold, hinnē אוֹכֵ֗ל he eateth; ʾākal וְהֵקִיץ֮ but he awaketh, qûṣ וְרֵיקָ֣ה is empty: rêq נַפְשׁוֹ֒ and his soul nepeš וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר or as when ʾăšer יַחֲלֹ֤ם dreameth, ḥālam הַצָּמֵא֙ a thirsty man ṣāmēʾ וְהִנֵּ֣ה and, behold, hinnē שֹׁתֶ֔ה he drinketh; šātâ וְהֵקִיץ֙ but he awaketh, qûṣ וְהִנֵּ֣ה and, behold, hinnē עָיֵ֔ף faint, ʿāyēp וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ and his soul nepeš שׁוֹקֵקָ֑ה hath appetite: šāqaq כֵּ֣ן so kēn יִֽהְיֶ֗ה be, hāyâ הֲמוֹן֙ shall the multitude hāmôn כָּל of all kōl הַגּוֹיִ֔ם the nations gôy הַצֹּבְאִ֖ים that fight ṣābāʾ עַל against ʿal הַ֥ר mount har צִיּֽוֹן׃ Zion. ṣiyyôn

הִתְמַהְמְה֣וּ Stay yourselves, māhah וּתְמָ֔הוּ and wonder; tāmah הִשְׁתַּֽעַשְׁע֖וּ cry ye out, šāʿaʿ וָשֹׁ֑עוּ and cry: šāʿaʿ שָֽׁכְר֣וּ they are drunken, šākar וְלֹא but not lōʾ יַ֔יִן with wine; yayin נָע֖וּ they stagger, nûaʿ וְלֹ֥א but not lōʾ שֵׁכָֽר׃ with strong drink. šēkār

כִּֽי For kî נָסַ֨ךְ hath poured out nāsak עֲלֵיכֶ֤ם upon ʿal יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ ר֣וּחַ you the spirit rûaḥ תַּרְדֵּמָ֔ה of deep sleep, tardēmâ וַיְעַצֵּ֖ם and hath closed ʿāṣam אֶת ʾēt עֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם your eyes: ʿayin אֶת ʾēt הַנְּבִיאִ֛ים the prophets nābîʾ וְאֶת ʾēt רָאשֵׁיכֶ֥ם and your rulers, rōš הַחֹזִ֖ים the seers ḥōze כִּסָּֽה׃ hath he covered. kāsâ

וַתְּהִ֨י is become hāyâ לָכֶ֜ם חָז֣וּת And the vision ḥāzût הַכֹּ֗ל of all kōl כְּדִבְרֵי֮ unto you as the words dābār הַסֵּ֣פֶר of a book sēper הֶֽחָתוּם֒ that is sealed, ḥātam אֲשֶֽׁר which ʾăšer יִתְּנ֣וּ deliver nātan אֹת֗וֹ ʾēt אֶל to ʾēl יוֹדֵ֥עַ one that is learned, yādaʿ הסֵ֛פֶר sēper לֵאמֹ֖ר saying, ʾāmar קְרָ֣א Read qārāʾ נָא I pray thee: nāʾ זֶ֑ה this, ze וְאָמַר֙ and he saith, ʾāmar לֹ֣א lōʾ אוּכַ֔ל I cannot; yākōl כִּ֥י for kî חָת֖וּם sealed: ḥātam הֽוּא׃ it hûʾ

וְנִתַּ֣ן is delivered nātan הַסֵּ֗פֶר And the book sēper עַל֩ to ʿal אֲשֶׁ֨ר him that ʾăšer לֹֽא lōʾ יָדַ֥ע is not learned, yādaʿ סֵ֛פֶר sēper לֵאמֹ֖ר saying, ʾāmar קְרָ֣א Read qārāʾ נָא I pray thee: nāʾ זֶ֑ה this, ze וְאָמַ֕ר and he saith, ʾāmar לֹ֥א lōʾ יָדַ֖עְתִּי I am not learned. yādaʿ סֵֽפֶר׃ sēper

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar אֲדֹנָ֗י Wherefore the Lord ʾădōnāy יַ֚עַן Forasmuch yaʿan כִּ֤י kî נִגַּשׁ֙ draw near nāgaš הָעָ֣ם people ʿam הַזֶּ֔ה as this ze בְּפִ֤יו with their mouth, pe וּבִשְׂפָתָיו֙ and with their lips śāpâ כִּבְּד֔וּנִי do honour kābad וְלִבּ֖וֹ their heart lēb רִחַ֣ק me, but have removed rāḥaq מִמֶּ֑נִּי far from min וַתְּהִ֤י me is hāyâ יִרְאָתָם֙ me, and their fear yārēʾ אֹתִ֔י toward ʾēt מִצְוַ֥ת by the precept miṣwâ אֲנָשִׁ֖ים of men: ʾîš מְלֻמָּדָֽה׃ taught lāmad

לָכֵ֗ן Therefore, kēn הִנְנִ֥י behold, hēn יוֹסִ֛ף I will proceed yāsap לְהַפְלִ֥יא to do a marvellous work pālāʾ אֶת among ʾēt הָֽעָם people, ʿam הַזֶּ֖ה this ze הַפְלֵ֣א a marvellous work pālāʾ וָפֶ֑לֶא and a wonder: peleʾ וְאָֽבְדָה֙ shall perish, ʾābad חָכְמַ֣ת for the wisdom ḥokmâ חֲכָמָ֔יו of their wise ḥākām וּבִינַ֥ת and the understanding bînâ נְבֹנָ֖יו of their prudent bîn תִּסְתַּתָּֽר׃ shall be hid. sātar

ה֛וֹי Woe hôy הַמַּעֲמִיקִ֥ים unto them that seek deep ʿāmaq מֵֽיהוָ֖ה from the Lord, yĕhōwâ לַסְתִּ֣ר to hide sātar עֵצָ֑ה their counsel ʿēṣâ וְהָיָ֤ה are hāyâ בְמַחְשָׁךְ֙ in the dark, maḥšok מַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם and their works maʿăśe וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ and they say, ʾāmar מִ֥י Who mî רֹאֵ֖נוּ seeth rāʾâ וּמִ֥י us? and who mî יֹדְעֵֽנוּ׃ knoweth us? yādaʿ

הַ֨פְכְּכֶ֔ם your turning of things upside down hōpek אִם Surely ʾim כְּחֹ֥מֶר clay: ḥōmer הַיֹּצֵ֖ר as the potter's yāṣar יֵֽחָשֵׁ֑ב shall be esteemed ḥāšab כִּֽי for kî יֹאמַ֨ר say ʾāmar מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה shall the work maʿăśe לְעֹשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ of him that made ʿāśâ לֹ֣א me not? lōʾ עָשָׂ֔נִי it, He made ʿāśâ וְיֵ֛צֶר or shall the thing framed yēṣer אָמַ֥ר say ʾāmar לְיֹצְר֖וֹ of him that framed yāṣar לֹ֥א lōʾ הֵבִֽין׃ it, He had no understanding? bîn

הֲלוֹא it not lōʾ עוֹד֙ yet ʿôd מְעַ֣ט little while, mĕʿaṭ מִזְעָ֔ר a very mizʿār וְשָׁ֥ב shall be turned šûb לְבָנ֖וֹן and Lebanon lĕbānôn לַכַּרְמֶ֑ל into a fruitful field, karmel וְהַכַּרְמֶ֖ל and the fruitful field karmel לַיַּ֥עַר as a forest? yaʿar יֵחָשֵֽׁב׃ shall be esteemed ḥāšab

וְשָׁמְע֧וּ hear šāmaʿ בַיּוֹם day yôm הַה֛וּא And in that hûʾ הַחֵרְשִׁ֖ים shall the deaf ḥērēš דִּבְרֵי the words dābār סֵ֑פֶר of the book, sēper וּמֵאֹ֣פֶל out of obscurity, ʾōpel וּמֵחֹ֔שֶׁךְ and out of darkness. ḥōšek עֵינֵ֥י and the eyes ʿayin עִוְרִ֖ים of the blind ʿiwwēr תִּרְאֶֽינָה׃ shall see rāʾâ

וְיָסְפ֧וּ also shall increase yāsap עֲנָוִ֛ים The meek ʿānāw בַּֽיהוָ֖ה in the Lord, yĕhōwâ שִׂמְחָ֑ה joy śimḥâ וְאֶבְיוֹנֵ֣י and the poor ʾebyôn אָדָ֔ם among men ʾādām בִּקְד֥וֹשׁ in the Holy One qādôš יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl יָגִֽילוּ׃ shall rejoice gîl

כִּֽי For kî אָפֵ֥ס is brought to nought, ʾāpēs עָרִ֖יץ the terrible one ʿārîṣ וְכָ֣לָה is consumed, kālâ לֵ֑ץ and the scorner lûṣ וְנִכְרְת֖וּ are cut off: kārat כָּל and all kōl שֹׁ֥קְדֵי that watch šāqad אָֽוֶן׃ for iniquity ʾāwen

מַחֲטִיאֵ֤י an offender ḥāṭāʾ אָדָם֙ That make a man ʾādām בְּדָבָ֔ר for a word, dābār וְלַמּוֹכִ֥יחַ for him that reproveth yākaḥ בַּשַּׁ֖עַר in the gate, šaʿar יְקֹשׁ֑וּן and lay a snare qôš וַיַּטּ֥וּ and turn aside nāṭâ בַתֹּ֖הוּ for a thing of nought. tōhû צַדִּֽיק׃ the just ṣaddîq

לָכֵ֗ן Therefore kēn כֹּֽה thus kō אָמַ֤ר saith ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֶל concerning ʾēl בֵּ֣ית the house bayit יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב of Jacob, yaʿăqōb אֲשֶׁ֥ר who ʾăšer פָּדָ֖ה redeemed pādâ אֶת ʾēt אַבְרָהָ֑ם Abraham, ʾabrāhām לֹֽא shall not lōʾ עַתָּ֤ה now ʿattâ יֵבוֹשׁ֙ be ashamed, bûš יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב Jacob yaʿăqōb וְלֹ֥א neither lōʾ עַתָּ֖ה now ʿattâ פָּנָ֥יו shall his face pānîm יֶחֱוָֽרוּ׃ wax pale. ḥāwar

כִּ֣י But when kî בִ֠רְאֹתוֹ he seeth rāʾâ יְלָדָ֞יו his children, yeled מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה the work maʿăśe יָדַ֛י of mine hands, yād בְּקִרְבּ֖וֹ in the midst qereb יַקְדִּ֣ישֽׁוּ of him, they shall sanctify qādaš שְׁמִ֑י my name, šēm וְהִקְדִּ֙ישׁוּ֙ and sanctify qādaš אֶת ʾēt קְד֣וֹשׁ the Holy One qādôš יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב of Jacob, yaʿăqōb וְאֶת ʾēt אֱלֹהֵ֥י the God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl יַעֲרִֽיצוּ׃ and shall fear ʿāraṣ

וְיָדְע֥וּ shall come yādaʿ תֹֽעֵי They also that erred tāʿâ ר֖וּחַ in spirit rûaḥ בִּינָ֑ה to understanding, bînâ וְרוֹגְנִ֖ים and they that murmured rāgan יִלְמְדוּ shall learn lāmad לֶֽקַח׃ doctrine. leqaḥ
