כִּי֩ For kî יְרַחֵ֨ם will have mercy rāḥam יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶֽת on ʾēt יַעֲקֹ֗ב Jacob, yaʿăqōb וּבָחַ֥ר choose bāḥar עוֹד֙ and will yet ʿôd בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְהִנִּיחָ֖ם and set yānaḥ עַל them in ʿal אַדְמָתָ֑ם their own land: ʾădāmâ וְנִלְוָ֤ה shall be joined lāwâ הַגֵּר֙ and the strangers gēr עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם with ʿal וְנִסְפְּח֖וּ them, and they shall cleave sāpaḥ עַל to ʿal בֵּ֥ית the house bayit יַעֲקֹֽב׃ of Jacob. yaʿăqōb

וּלְקָח֣וּם shall take lāqaḥ עַמִּים֮ And the people ʿam וֶהֱבִיא֣וּם them, and bring bôʾ אֶל them to ʾēl מְקוֹמָם֒ their place: māqôm וְהִֽתְנַחֲל֣וּם shall possess nāḥal בֵּֽית and the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl עַ֚ל them in ʿal אַדְמַ֣ת the land ʾădāmâ יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ לַעֲבָדִ֖ים for servants ʿebed וְלִשְׁפָח֑וֹת and handmaids: šipḥâ וְהָיוּ֙ and they shall take hāyâ שֹׁבִ֣ים them captives, šābâ לְשֹֽׁבֵיהֶ֔ם whose captives šābâ וְרָד֖וּ they were; and they shall rule over rādâ בְּנֹגְשֵׂיהֶֽם׃ their oppressors. nāgaś

וְהָיָ֗ה And it shall come to pass hāyâ בְּי֨וֹם in the day yôm הָנִ֤יחַ shall give thee rest nûaḥ יְהוָה֙ that the Lord yĕhōwâ לְךָ֔ מֵֽעָצְבְּךָ֖ from thy sorrow, ʿāṣāb וּמִֽרָגְזֶ֑ךָ and from thy fear, rōgez וּמִן and from min הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה bondage ʿăbōdâ הַקָּשָׁ֖ה the hard qāše אֲשֶׁ֥ר wherein ʾăšer עֻבַּד thou wast made to serve, ʿābad בָּֽךְ׃

וְנָשָׂ֜אתָ That thou shalt take up nāśāʾ הַמָּשָׁ֥ל proverb māšāl הַזֶּ֛ה this ze עַל against ʿal מֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek בָּבֶ֖ל of Babylon, bābel וְאָמָ֑רְתָּ and say, ʾāmar אֵ֚יךְ How ʾêk שָׁבַ֣ת ceased! šābat נֹגֵ֔שׂ hath the oppressor nāgaś שָׁבְתָ֖ה ceased! šābat מַדְהֵבָֽה׃ the golden city madhēbâ

שָׁבַ֥ר hath broken šābar יְהוָ֖ה The Lord yĕhōwâ מַטֵּ֣ה the staff maṭṭe רְשָׁעִ֑ים of the wicked, rāšāʿ שֵׁ֖בֶט the sceptre šēbeṭ מֹשְׁלִֽים׃ of the rulers. māšal

מַכֶּ֤ה He who smote nākâ עַמִּים֙ the people ʿam בְּעֶבְרָ֔ה in wrath ʿebrâ מַכַּ֖ת stroke, makkâ בִּלְתִּ֣י with a continual biltî סָרָ֑ה sārâ רֹדֶ֤ה he that ruled rādâ בָאַף֙ in anger, ʾap גּוֹיִ֔ם the nations gôy מֻרְדָּ֖ף is persecuted, murdāp בְּלִ֥י none bĕlî חָשָֽׂךְ׃ hindereth. ḥāśak

נָ֥חָה is at rest, nûaḥ שָׁקְטָ֖ה is quiet: šāqaṭ כָּל The whole kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ earth ʾereṣ פָּצְח֖וּ they break forth pāṣaḥ רִנָּֽה׃ into singing. rinnâ

גַּם Yea, gam בְּרוֹשִׁ֛ים the fir trees bĕrôš שָׂמְח֥וּ rejoice śāmaḥ לְךָ֖ אַרְזֵ֣י at thee, the cedars ʾerez לְבָנ֑וֹן of Lebanon, lĕbānôn מֵאָ֣ז Since ʾāz שָׁכַ֔בְתָּ thou art laid down, šākab לֹֽא no lōʾ יַעֲלֶ֥ה is come up ʿālâ הַכֹּרֵ֖ת feller kārat עָלֵֽינוּ׃ against us. ʿal

שְׁא֗וֹל Hell šĕʾôl מִתַּ֛חַת from beneath taḥat רָגְזָ֥ה is moved rāgaz לְךָ֖ לִקְרַ֣את for thee to meet qirʾâ בּוֹאֶ֑ךָ at thy coming: bôʾ עוֹרֵ֨ר it stirreth up ʿûr לְךָ֤ רְפָאִים֙ the dead rāpāʾ כָּל for thee, all kōl עַתּ֣וּדֵי the chief ones ʿattûd אָ֔רֶץ of the earth; ʾereṣ הֵקִים֙ it hath raised up qûm מִכִּסְאוֹתָ֔ם from their thrones kissēʾ כֹּ֖ל all kōl מַלְכֵ֥י the kings melek גוֹיִֽם׃ of the nations. gôy

כֻּלָּ֣ם All kōl יַֽעֲנ֔וּ they shall speak ʿānâ וְיֹאמְר֖וּ and say ʾāmar אֵלֶ֑יךָ unto us? ʾēl גַּם also gam אַתָּ֛ה unto thee, Art thou ʾattâ חֻלֵּ֥יתָ become weak ḥālâ כָמ֖וֹנוּ kĕmô אֵלֵ֥ינוּ ʾēl נִמְשָֽׁלְתָּ׃ as we? art thou become like māšal

הוּרַ֥ד is brought down yārad שְׁא֛וֹל to the grave, šĕʾôl גְאוֹנֶ֖ךָ Thy pomp gāʾôn הֶמְיַ֣ת the noise hemyâ נְבָלֶ֑יךָ of thy viols: nebel תַּחְתֶּ֙יךָ֙ under taḥat יֻצַּ֣ע is spread yaṣaʿ רִמָּ֔ה the worm rimmâ וּמְכַסֶּ֖יךָ cover thee. mĕkasse תּוֹלֵעָֽה׃ thee, and the worms tôlāʿ

אֵ֛יךְ How ʾêk נָפַ֥לְתָּ art thou fallen nāpal מִשָּׁמַ֖יִם from heaven, šāmayim הֵילֵ֣ל O Lucifer, hêlēl בֶּן son bēn שָׁ֑חַר of the morning! šaḥar נִגְדַּ֣עְתָּ art thou cut down gādaʿ לָאָ֔רֶץ to the ground, ʾereṣ חוֹלֵ֖שׁ which didst weaken ḥālaš עַל ʿal גּוֹיִֽם׃ the nations! gôy

וְאַתָּ֞ה For thou ʾattâ אָמַ֤רְתָּ hast said ʾāmar בִֽלְבָבְךָ֙ in thine heart, lēbāb הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם into heaven, šāmayim אֶֽעֱלֶ֔ה I will ascend ʿālâ מִמַּ֥עַל above maʿal לְכֽוֹכְבֵי the stars kôkāb אֵ֖ל of God: ʾēl אָרִ֣ים I will exalt rûm כִּסְאִ֑י my throne kissēʾ וְאֵשֵׁ֥ב I will sit yāšab בְּהַר also upon the mount har מוֹעֵ֖ד of the congregation, môʿēd בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֥י in the sides yĕrēkâ צָפֽוֹן׃ of the north: ṣāpôn

אֶעֱלֶ֖ה I will ascend ʿālâ עַל above ʿal בָּ֣מֳתֵי the heights bāmâ עָ֑ב of the clouds; ʿāb אֶדַּמֶּ֖ה I will be like dāmâ לְעֶלְיֽוֹן׃ the most High. ʿelyôn

אַ֧ךְ Yet ʾak אֶל to ʾēl שְׁא֛וֹל hell, šĕʾôl תּוּרָ֖ד thou shalt be brought down yārad אֶל to ʾēl יַרְכְּתֵי the sides yĕrēkâ בֽוֹר׃ of the pit. bôr

רֹאֶ֙יךָ֙ They that see rāʾâ אֵלֶ֣יךָ upon ʾēl יַשְׁגִּ֔יחוּ thee shall narrowly look šāgaḥ אֵלֶ֖יךָ ʾēl יִתְבּוֹנָ֑נוּ thee, consider bîn הֲזֶ֤ה thee, this ze הָאִישׁ֙ the man ʾîš מַרְגִּ֣יז to tremble, rāgaz הָאָ֔רֶץ that made the earth ʾereṣ מַרְעִ֖ישׁ that did shake rāʿaš מַמְלָכֽוֹת׃ kingdoms; mamlākâ

שָׂ֥ם made śûm תֵּבֵ֛ל the world tēbēl כַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר as a wilderness, midbār וְעָרָ֣יו the cities ʿîr הָרָ֑ס and destroyed hāras אֲסִירָ֖יו of his prisoners? ʾāsîr לֹא not lōʾ פָ֥תַח thereof; opened pātaḥ בָּֽיְתָה׃ the house bayit

כָּל All kōl מַלְכֵ֥י the kings melek גוֹיִ֖ם of the nations, gôy כֻּלָּ֑ם all kōl שָׁכְב֥וּ of them, lie šākab בְכָב֖וֹד in glory, kābôd אִ֥ישׁ every one ʾîš בְּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ in his own house. bayit

וְאַתָּ֞ה But thou ʾattâ הָשְׁלַ֤כְתָּ art cast out šālak מִֽקִּבְרְךָ֙ of thy grave qeber כְּנֵ֣צֶר branch, nēṣer נִתְעָ֔ב like an abominable taʿāb לְבֻ֥שׁ the raiment lĕbûš הֲרֻגִ֖ים of those that are slain, hārag מְטֹ֣עֲנֵי thrust through ṭāʿan חָ֑רֶב with a sword, ḥereb יוֹרְדֵ֥י that go down yārad אֶל to ʾēl אַבְנֵי the stones ʾeben ב֖וֹר of the pit; bôr כְּפֶ֥גֶר as a carcase peger מוּבָֽס׃ trodden under feet. bûs

לֹֽא Thou shalt not lōʾ תֵחַ֤ד be joined yāḥad אִתָּם֙ with ʾēt בִּקְבוּרָ֔ה them in burial, qĕbûrâ כִּֽי because kî אַרְצְךָ֥ thy land, ʾereṣ שִׁחַ֖תָּ thou hast destroyed šāḥat עַמְּךָ֣ thy people: ʿam הָרָ֑גְתָּ slain hārag לֹֽא lōʾ יִקָּרֵ֥א be renowned. qārāʾ לְעוֹלָ֖ם shall never ʿôlām זֶ֥רַע the seed zeraʿ מְרֵעִֽים׃ of evildoers rāʿaʿ

הָכִ֧ינוּ Prepare kûn לְבָנָ֛יו for his children bēn מַטְבֵּ֖חַ slaughter maṭbēaḥ בַּעֲוֺ֣ן for the iniquity ʿāwōn אֲבוֹתָ֑ם of their fathers; ʾāb בַּל that they do not bal יָקֻ֙מוּ֙ rise, qûm וְיָ֣רְשׁוּ nor possess yāraš אָ֔רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וּמָלְא֥וּ nor fill mālēʾ פְנֵֽי the face pānîm תֵבֵ֖ל of the world tēbēl עָרִֽים׃ with cities. ʿār

וְקַמְתִּ֣י For I will rise up qûm עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם against ʿal נְאֻ֖ם them, saith nĕʾum יְהוָ֣ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֑וֹת of hosts, ṣābāʾ וְהִכְרַתִּ֨י and cut off kārat לְבָבֶ֜ל from Babylon bābel שֵׁ֥ם the name, šēm וּשְׁאָ֛ר and remnant, šĕʾār וְנִ֥ין and son, nîn וָנֶ֖כֶד and nephew, neked נְאֻם saith nĕʾum יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ

וְשַׂמְתִּ֛יהָ I will also make śûm לְמוֹרַ֥שׁ it a possession môroš קִפֹּ֖ד for the bittern, qippôd וְאַגְמֵי and pools ʾăgam מָ֑יִם of water: mayim וְטֵֽאטֵאתִ֙יהָ֙ and I will sweep ṭûʾ בְּמַטְאֲטֵ֣א it with the besom maṭʾăṭēʾ הַשְׁמֵ֔ד of destruction, šāmad נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָאֽוֹת׃ of hosts. ṣābāʾ

נִשְׁבַּ֛ע hath sworn, šābaʿ יְהוָ֥ה The Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֖וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar אִם Surely ʾim לֹ֞א lōʾ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר as ʾăšer דִּמִּ֙יתִי֙ I have thought, dāmâ כֵּ֣ן so kēn הָיָ֔תָה shall it come to pass; hāyâ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר and as ʾăšer יָעַ֖צְתִּי I have purposed, yāʿaṣ הִ֥יא shall it hûʾ תָקֽוּם׃ stand: qûm

לִשְׁבֹּ֤ר That I will break šābar אַשּׁוּר֙ the Assyrian ʾaššûr בְּאַרְצִ֔י in my land, ʾereṣ וְעַל and upon ʿal הָרַ֖י my mountains har אֲבוּסֶ֑נּוּ tread him under foot: bûs וְסָ֤ר depart sûr מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶם֙ from off ʿal עֻלּ֔וֹ then shall his yoke ʿōl וְסֻ֨בֳּל֔וֹ them, and his burden sōbel מֵעַ֥ל from off ʿal שִׁכְמ֖וֹ their shoulders. šĕkem יָסֽוּר׃ depart sûr

זֹ֛את This zōt הָעֵצָ֥ה the purpose ʿēṣâ הַיְּעוּצָ֖ה that is purposed ʿēṣâ עַל upon ʿal כָּל the whole kōl הָאָ֑רֶץ earth: ʾereṣ וְזֹ֛את and this zōt הַיָּ֥ד the hand yād הַנְּטוּיָ֖ה that is stretched out nāṭâ עַל upon ʿal כָּל all kōl הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ the nations. gôy

כִּֽי For kî יְהוָ֧ה the Lord yĕhōwâ צְבָא֛וֹת of hosts ṣābāʾ יָעָ֖ץ hath purposed, yāʿaṣ וּמִ֣י and who mî יָפֵ֑ר shall disannul pārar וְיָד֥וֹ and his hand yād הַנְּטוּיָ֖ה stretched out, nāṭâ וּמִ֥י and who mî יְשִׁיבֶֽנָּה׃ shall turn it back? šûb

בִּשְׁנַת In the year šāne מ֖וֹת died māwet הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ that king melek אָחָ֑ז Ahaz ʾāḥāz הָיָ֖ה was hāyâ הַמַּשָּׂ֥א burden. maśśāʾ הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

אַֽל not ʾal תִּשְׂמְחִ֤י Rejoice śāmaḥ פְלֶ֙שֶׁת֙ Palestina, pĕlešet כֻּלֵּ֔ךְ thou, whole kōl כִּ֥י because kî נִשְׁבַּ֖ר thee is broken: šābar שֵׁ֣בֶט the rod šēbeṭ מַכֵּ֑ךְ smote nākâ כִּֽי of him that kî מִשֹּׁ֤רֶשׁ root šereš נָחָשׁ֙ for out of the serpent's nāḥoš יֵ֣צֵא shall come forth yāṣāʾ צֶ֔פַע a cockatrice, ṣepaʿ וּפִרְי֖וֹ and his fruit pĕrî שָׂרָ֥ף serpent. śārāp מְעוֹפֵֽף׃ a fiery flying ʿûp

וְרָעוּ֙ shall feed, rāʿâ בְּכוֹרֵ֣י And the firstborn bĕkôr דַלִּ֔ים of the poor dal וְאֶבְיוֹנִ֖ים and the needy ʾebyôn לָבֶ֣טַח in safety: beṭaḥ יִרְבָּ֑צוּ shall lie down rābaṣ וְהֵמַתִּ֤י and I will kill mût בָֽרָעָב֙ with famine, rāʿāb שָׁרְשֵׁ֔ךְ thy root šereš וּשְׁאֵרִיתֵ֖ךְ thy remnant. šĕʾērît יַהֲרֹֽג׃ and he shall slay hārag

הֵילִ֤ילִֽי Howl, yālal שַׁ֙עַר֙ O gate; šaʿar זַֽעֲקִי cry, zāʿaq עִ֔יר O city; ʿîr נָמ֖וֹג dissolved: mûg פְּלֶ֣שֶׁת Palestina, pĕlešet כֻּלֵּ֑ךְ thou, whole kōl כִּ֤י for kî מִצָּפוֹן֙ from the north ṣāpôn עָשָׁ֣ן a smoke, ʿāšān בָּ֔א there shall come bôʾ וְאֵ֥ין and none ʾayin בּוֹדֵ֖ד alone bādad בְּמוֹעָדָֽיו׃ in his appointed times. môʿād

וּמַֽה What mâ יַּעֲנֶ֖ה shall then answer ʿānâ מַלְאֲכֵי the messengers mălʾok ג֑וֹי of the nation? gôy כִּ֤י That kî יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ יִסַּ֣ד hath founded yāsad צִיּ֔וֹן Zion, ṣiyyôn וּבָ֥הּ יֶחֱס֖וּ shall trust in it. ḥāsâ עֲנִיֵּ֥י and the poor ʿānî עַמּֽוֹ׃ of his people ʿam
