וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ was hāyâ חַיֵּ֣י old: ḥay שָׂרָ֔ה And Sarah śārâ מֵאָ֥ה an hundred mēʾâ שָׁנָ֛ה šāne וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים and twenty ʿeśrîm שָׁנָ֖ה šāne וְשֶׁ֣בַע and seven šebaʿ שָׁנִ֑ים years šāne שְׁנֵ֖י the years šāne חַיֵּ֥י of the life ḥay שָׂרָֽה׃ of Sarah. śārâ

וַתָּ֣מָת died mût שָׂרָ֗ה And Sarah śārâ בְּקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע in Kirjath-arba; qiryat ʾarbaʿ הִ֥וא the same hûʾ חֶבְר֖וֹן Hebron ḥebrôn בְּאֶ֣רֶץ in the land ʾereṣ כְּנָ֑עַן of Canaan: kĕnaʿan וַיָּבֹא֙ came bôʾ אַבְרָהָ֔ם and Abraham ʾabrāhām לִסְפֹּ֥ד to mourn sāpad לְשָׂרָ֖ה for Sarah, śārâ וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃ and to weep for her. bākâ

וַיָּ֙קָם֙ stood up qûm אַבְרָהָ֔ם And Abraham ʾabrāhām מֵעַ֖ל ʿal פְּנֵ֣י from before pānîm מֵת֑וֹ his dead, mût וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר and spake dābar אֶל unto ʾēl בְּנֵי the sons bēn חֵ֖ת of Heth, ḥēt לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

גֵּר a stranger gēr וְתוֹשָׁ֥ב and a sojourner tôšāb אָֽנֹכִ֖י I ʾānōkî עִמָּכֶ֑ם with ʿim תְּנ֨וּ you: give nātan לִ֤י אֲחֻזַּת me a possession ʾăḥuzzâ קֶ֙בֶר֙ of a buryingplace qeber עִמָּכֶ֔ם with ʿim וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה you, that I may bury qābar מֵתִ֖י my dead mût מִלְּפָנָֽי׃ out of my sight. pānîm

וַיַּֽעֲנ֧וּ answered ʿānâ בְנֵי And the children bēn חֵ֛ת of Heth ḥēt אֶת ʾēt אַבְרָהָ֖ם Abraham, ʾabrāhām לֵאמֹ֥ר saying unto him, ʾāmar לֽוֹ׃

שְׁמָעֵ֣נוּ׀ Hear us, šāmaʿ אֲדֹנִ֗י my lord: ʾādôn נְשִׂ֨יא prince nāśîʾ אֱלֹהִ֤ים a mighty ʾĕlōhîm אַתָּה֙ thou ʾattâ בְּתוֹכֵ֔נוּ among us: tāwek בְּמִבְחַ֣ר in the choice mibḥār קְבָרֵ֔ינוּ of our sepulchres qeber קְבֹ֖ר bury qābar אֶת ʾēt מֵתֶ֑ךָ thy dead; mût אִ֣ישׁ ʾĕnôš מִמֶּ֔נּוּ of min אֶת thee ʾēt קִבְר֛וֹ his sepulchre, qeber לֹֽא none lōʾ יִכְלֶ֥ה us shall withhold kālāʾ מִמְּךָ֖ from min מִקְּבֹ֥ר but that thou mayest bury qābar מֵתֶֽךָ׃ thy dead. mût

וַיָּ֧קָם stood up, qûm אַבְרָהָ֛ם And Abraham ʾabrāhām וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ and bowed himself šāḥâ לְעַם to the people ʿam הָאָ֖רֶץ of the land, ʾereṣ לִבְנֵי to the children bēn חֵֽת׃ of Heth. ḥēt

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר And he communed dābar אִתָּ֖ם with ʾēt לֵאמֹ֑ר them, saying, ʾāmar אִם If ʾim יֵ֣שׁ it be yēš אֶֽת ʾēt נַפְשְׁכֶ֗ם your mind nepeš לִקְבֹּ֤ר that I should bury qābar אֶת ʾēt מֵתִי֙ my dead mût מִלְּפָנַ֔י out of my sight; pānîm שְׁמָע֕וּנִי hear šāmaʿ וּפִגְעוּ me, and intreat pāgaʿ לִ֖י בְּעֶפְר֥וֹן for me to Ephron ʿeprôn בֶּן the son bēn צֹֽחַר׃ of Zohar, ṣōḥar

וְיִתֶּן That he may give nātan לִ֗י אֶת me ʾēt מְעָרַ֤ת the cave mĕʿārâ הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ of Machpelah, makpēlâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר he hath, which ʾăšer בִּקְצֵ֣ה in the end qāṣe שָׂדֵ֑הוּ of his field; śāde בְּכֶ֨סֶף for as much money kesep מָלֵ֜א as it is worth mālēʾ יִתְּנֶ֥נָּה he shall give it nātan לִ֛י בְּתֽוֹכְכֶ֖ם amongst you. tāwek לַֽאֲחֻזַּת me for a possession ʾăḥuzzâ קָֽבֶר׃ of a buryingplace qeber

וְעֶפְר֥וֹן And Ephron ʿeprôn יֹשֵׁ֖ב dwelt yāšab בְּת֣וֹךְ among tāwek בְּנֵי the children bēn חֵ֑ת of Heth: ḥēt וַיַּעַן֩ answered ʿānâ עֶפְר֨וֹן and Ephron ʿeprôn הַֽחִתִּ֤י the Hittite ḥittî אֶת ʾēt אַבְרָהָם֙ Abraham ʾabrāhām בְּאָזְנֵ֣י in the audience ʾōzen בְנֵי of the children bēn חֵ֔ת of Heth, ḥēt לְכֹ֛ל of all kōl בָּאֵ֥י that went in bôʾ שַֽׁעַר at the gate šaʿar עִיר֖וֹ of his city, ʿîr לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

לֹֽא Nay, lōʾ אֲדֹנִ֣י my lord, ʾādôn שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי hear me: šāmaʿ הַשָּׂדֶה֙ the field śāde נָתַ֣תִּי give I nātan לָ֔ךְ וְהַמְּעָרָ֥ה thee, and the cave mĕʿārâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בּ֖וֹ לְךָ֣ נְתַתִּ֑יהָ therein, I give it nātan לְעֵינֵ֧י thee; in the presence ʿayin בְנֵֽי of the sons bēn עַמִּ֛י of my people ʿam נְתַתִּ֥יהָ give nātan לָּ֖ךְ קְבֹ֥ר I it thee: bury qābar מֵתֶֽךָ׃ thy dead. mût

וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ bowed down himself šāḥâ אַבְרָהָ֔ם And Abraham ʾabrāhām לִפְנֵ֖י before pānîm עַ֥ם the people ʿam הָאָֽרֶץ׃ of the land. ʾereṣ

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר And he spake dābar אֶל unto ʾēl עֶפְר֜וֹן Ephron ʿeprôn בְּאָזְנֵ֤י in the audience ʾōzen עַם of the people ʿam הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ of the land, ʾereṣ לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar אַ֛ךְ But ʾak אִם if ʾim אַתָּ֥ה thou ʾattâ ל֖וּ I pray thee, lûʾ שְׁמָעֵ֑נִי hear šāmaʿ נָתַ֜תִּי me: I will give nātan כֶּ֤סֶף thee money kesep הַשָּׂדֶה֙ for the field; śāde קַ֣ח take lāqaḥ מִמֶּ֔נִּי of min וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה me, and I will bury qābar אֶת ʾēt מֵתִ֖י my dead mût שָֽׁמָּה׃ there. šām

וַיַּ֧עַן answered ʿānâ עֶפְר֛וֹן And Ephron ʿeprôn אֶת ʾēt אַבְרָהָ֖ם Abraham, ʾabrāhām לֵאמֹ֥ר saying unto him, ʾāmar לֽוֹ׃

אֲדֹנִ֣י My lord, ʾādôn שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי hearken šāmaʿ אֶרֶץ֩ unto me: the land ʾereṣ אַרְבַּ֨ע four ʾarbaʿ מֵאֹ֧ת hundred mēʾâ שֶֽׁקֶל shekels šeqel כֶּ֛סֶף of silver; kesep בֵּינִ֥י betwixt bên וּבֵֽינְךָ֖ bên מַה what mâ הִ֑וא that hûʾ וְאֶת ʾēt מֵֽתְךָ֖ therefore thy dead. mût קְבֹֽר׃ me and thee? bury qābar

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע hearkened šāmaʿ אַבְרָהָם֮ And Abraham ʾabrāhām אֶל unto ʾēl עֶפְרוֹן֒ Ephron; ʿeprôn וַיִּשְׁקֹ֤ל weighed šāqal אַבְרָהָם֙ and Abraham ʾabrāhām לְעֶפְרֹ֔ן to Ephron ʿeprôn אֶת ʾēt הַכֶּ֕סֶף the silver, kesep אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer דִּבֶּ֖ר he had named dābar בְּאָזְנֵ֣י in the audience ʾōzen בְנֵי of the sons bēn חֵ֑ת of Heth, ḥēt אַרְבַּ֤ע four ʾarbaʿ מֵאוֹת֙ hundred mēʾâ שֶׁ֣קֶל shekels šeqel כֶּ֔סֶף of silver, kesep עֹבֵ֖ר current ʿābar לַסֹּחֵֽר׃ with the merchant. sāḥar

וַיָּ֣קָם׀ were made sure qûm שְׂדֵ֣ה And the field śāde עֶפְר֗וֹן of Ephron, ʿeprôn אֲשֶׁר֙ which ʾăšer בַּמַּכְפֵּלָ֔ה in Machpelah, makpēlâ אֲשֶׁ֖ר which ʾăšer לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm מַמְרֵ֑א Mamre, mamrēʾ הַשָּׂדֶה֙ the field, śāde וְהַמְּעָרָ֣ה and the cave mĕʿārâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer בּ֔וֹ וְכָל therein, and all kōl הָעֵץ֙ the trees ʿēṣ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה in the field, śāde אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer בְּכָל in all kōl גְּבֻל֖וֹ the borders gĕbûl סָבִֽיב׃ round about, sābîb

לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם Unto Abraham ʾabrāhām לְמִקְנָ֖ה for a possession miqnâ לְעֵינֵ֣י in the presence ʿayin בְנֵי of the children bēn חֵ֑ת of Heth, ḥēt בְּכֹ֖ל before all kōl בָּאֵ֥י that went in bôʾ שַֽׁעַר at the gate šaʿar עִירֽוֹ׃ of his city. ʿîr

וְאַֽחֲרֵי And after ʾaḥar כֵן֩ this, kēn קָבַ֨ר buried qābar אַבְרָהָ֜ם Abraham ʾabrāhām אֶת ʾēt שָׂרָ֣ה Sarah śārâ אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ his wife ʾiššâ אֶל in ʾēl מְעָרַ֞ת the cave mĕʿārâ שְׂדֵ֧ה of the field śāde הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה of Machpelah makpēlâ עַל ʿal פְּנֵ֥י before pānîm מַמְרֵ֖א Mamre: mamrēʾ הִ֣וא the same hûʾ חֶבְר֑וֹן Hebron ḥebrôn בְּאֶ֖רֶץ in the land ʾereṣ כְּנָֽעַן׃ of Canaan. kĕnaʿan
