וַיְהִ֖י Now it came to pass hāyâ בִּימֵ֣י in the days yôm אֲחַשְׁוֵר֑וֹשׁ of Ahasuerus, ʾăḥašwērôš ה֣וּא (this hûʾ אֲחַשְׁוֵר֗וֹשׁ Ahasuerus ʾăḥašwērôš הַמֹּלֵךְ֙ which reigned, mālak מֵהֹ֣דּוּ from India hōdû וְעַד even unto ʿad כּ֔וּשׁ Ethiopia, kûš שֶׁ֛בַע and seven šebaʿ וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים and twenty ʿeśrîm וּמֵאָ֖ה an hundred mēʾâ מְדִינָֽה׃ provinces:) mĕdînâ

בַּיָּמִ֖ים days, yôm הָהֵ֑ם in those hēm כְּשֶׁ֣בֶת׀ sat yāšab הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ when the king melek אֲחַשְׁוֵר֗וֹשׁ Ahasuerus ʾăḥašwērôš עַ֚ל on ʿal כִּסֵּ֣א the throne kissēʾ מַלְכוּת֔וֹ of his kingdom, malkût אֲשֶׁ֖ר which ʾăšer בְּשׁוּשַׁ֥ן in Shushan šûšan הַבִּירָֽה׃ the palace, bîrâ

בִּשְׁנַ֤ת year šāne שָׁלוֹשׁ֙ In the third šālôš לְמָלְכ֔וֹ of his reign, mālak עָשָׂ֣ה he made ʿāśâ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה a feast mište לְכָל unto all kōl שָׂרָ֖יו his princes śar וַֽעֲבָדָ֑יו and his servants; ʿebed חֵ֣יל׀ the power ḥayil פָּרַ֣ס of Persia pāras וּמָדַ֗י and Media, māday הַֽפַּרְתְּמִ֛ים the nobles partam וְשָׂרֵ֥י and princes śar הַמְּדִינ֖וֹת of the provinces, mĕdînâ לְפָנָֽיו׃ before him: pānîm

בְּהַרְאֹת֗וֹ When he shewed rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt עֹ֙שֶׁר֙ the riches ʿōšer כְּב֣וֹד of his glorious kābôd מַלְכוּת֔וֹ kingdom malkût וְאֶ֨ת ʾēt יְקָ֔ר and the honour yĕqār תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת of his excellent tipʾārâ גְּדוּלָּת֑וֹ majesty gĕdûlâ יָמִ֣ים days, yôm רַבִּ֔ים many rab שְׁמוֹנִ֥ים and fourscore šĕmōnîm וּמְאַ֖ת an hundred mēʾâ יֽוֹם׃ days. yôm

וּבִמְל֣וֹאת׀ were expired, mālēʾ הַיָּמִ֣ים days yôm הָאֵ֗לֶּה And when these ʾēlle עָשָׂ֣ה made ʿāśâ הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ the king melek לְכָל unto all kōl הָעָ֣ם the people ʿam הַנִּמְצְאִים֩ that were present māṣāʾ בְּשׁוּשַׁ֨ן in Shushan šûšan הַבִּירָ֜ה the palace, bîrâ לְמִגָּ֧דוֹל both unto great gādôl וְעַד ʿad קָטָ֛ן and small, qāṭān מִשְׁתֶּ֖ה a feast mište שִׁבְעַ֣ת seven šebaʿ יָמִ֑ים days, yôm בַּֽחֲצַ֕ר in the court ḥāṣēr גִּנַּ֥ת of the garden ginnâ בִּיתַ֖ן palace; bîtān הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ of the king's melek

ח֣וּר׀ white, ḥûr כַּרְפַּ֣ס green, karpas וּתְכֵ֗לֶת and blue, tĕkēlet אָחוּז֙ fastened ʾāḥaz בְּחַבְלֵי with cords ḥebel ב֣וּץ of fine linen bûṣ וְאַרְגָּמָ֔ן and purple ʾargāmān עַל to ʿal גְּלִ֥ילֵי rings gālîl כֶ֖סֶף silver kesep וְעַמּ֣וּדֵי and pillars ʿammûd שֵׁ֑שׁ of marble: šēš מִטּ֣וֹת׀ the beds miṭṭâ זָהָ֣ב gold zāhāb וָכֶ֗סֶף and silver, kesep עַ֛ל upon ʿal רִֽצְפַ֥ת a pavement riṣpâ בַּֽהַט of red, bahaṭ וָשֵׁ֖שׁ and blue, šēš וְדַ֥ר and white, dar וְסֹחָֽרֶת׃ and black, marble. sōḥēret

וְהַשְׁקוֹת֙ And they gave drink šāqâ בִּכְלֵ֣י in vessels kĕlî זָהָ֔ב of gold, zāhāb וְכֵלִ֖ים (the vessels kĕlî מִכֵּלִ֣ים one from another,) kĕlî שׁוֹנִ֑ים being diverse šānâ וְיֵ֥ין wine yayin מַלְכ֛וּת and royal malkût רָ֖ב in abundance, rab כְּיַ֥ד according to the state yād הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ of the king. melek

וְהַשְּׁתִיָּ֥ה And the drinking šĕtiyyâ כַדָּ֖ת according to the law; dāt אֵ֣ין none ʾayin אֹנֵ֑ס did compel: ʾānas כִּי for kî כֵ֣ן׀ so kēn יִסַּ֣ד had appointed yāsad הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ the king melek עַ֚ל to ʿal כָּל all kōl רַ֣ב the officers rab בֵּית֔וֹ of his house, bayit לַֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת that they should do ʿāśâ כִּרְצ֥וֹן pleasure. rāṣôn אִישׁ according to every man's ʾîš וָאִֽישׁ׃ ʾîš

גַּ֚ם Also gam וַשְׁתִּ֣י Vashti waštî הַמַּלְכָּ֔ה the queen malkâ עָֽשְׂתָ֖ה made ʿāśâ מִשְׁתֵּ֣ה a feast mište נָשִׁ֑ים for the women ʾiššâ בֵּ֚ית house bayit הַמַּלְכ֔וּת the royal malkût אֲשֶׁ֖ר which ʾăšer לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ to king melek אֲחַשְׁוֵרֽוֹשׁ׃ Ahasuerus. ʾăḥašwērôš

בַּיּוֹם֙ day, yôm הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י On the seventh šĕbîʿî כְּט֥וֹב was merry ṭôb לֵב when the heart lēb הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ of the king melek בַּיָּ֑יִן with wine, yayin אָמַ֡ר he commanded ʾāmar לִ֠מְהוּמָן Mehuman, mĕhûmān בִּזְּתָ֨א Biztha, biztāʾ חַרְבוֹנָ֜א Harbona, ḥarbônāʾ בִּגְתָ֤א Bigtha, bigtāʾ וַֽאֲבַגְתָא֙ and Abagtha, ʾăbagtāʾ זֵתַ֣ר Zethar, zētar וְכַרְכַּ֔ס and Carcas, karkas שִׁבְעַת֙ the seven šebaʿ הַסָּ֣רִיסִ֔ים chamberlains sārîs הַמְשָׁ֣רְתִ֔ים that served šārat אֶת ʾēt פְּנֵ֖י in the presence pānîm הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ the king, melek אֲחַשְׁוֵרֽוֹשׁ׃ of Ahasuerus ʾăḥašwērôš

לְ֠הָבִיא To bring bôʾ אֶת ʾēt וַשְׁתִּ֧י Vashti waštî הַמַּלְכָּ֛ה the queen malkâ לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek בְּכֶ֣תֶר with the crown keter מַלְכ֑וּת royal, malkût לְהַרְא֨וֹת to shew rāʾâ הָֽעַמִּ֤ים the people ʿam וְהַשָּׂרִים֙ and the princes śar אֶת ʾēt יָפְיָ֔הּ her beauty: yŏpî כִּֽי for kî טוֹבַ֥ת fair ṭôb מַרְאֶ֖ה to look on. marʾe הִֽיא׃ she hûʾ

וַתְּמָאֵ֞ן refused māʾēn הַמַּלְכָּ֣ה But the queen malkâ וַשְׁתִּ֗י Vashti waštî לָבוֹא֙ to come bôʾ בִּדְבַ֣ר commandment dābār הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ at the king's melek אֲשֶׁ֖ר ʾăšer בְּיַ֣ד by yād הַסָּֽרִיסִ֑ים chamberlains: sārîs וַיִּקְצֹ֤ף wroth, qāṣap הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ therefore was the king melek מְאֹ֔ד very mĕʾōd וַֽחֲמָת֖וֹ and his anger ḥēmâ בָּֽעֲרָ֥ה burned in him. bāʿar בֽוֹ׃

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ Then the king melek לַֽחֲכָמִ֖ים to the wise men, ḥākām יֹֽדְעֵ֣י which knew yādaʿ הָֽעִתִּ֑ים the times, ʿēt כִּי (for kî כֵן֙ so kēn דְּבַ֣ר manner dābār הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king's melek לִפְנֵ֕י toward pānîm כָּל all kōl יֹֽדְעֵ֖י that knew yādaʿ דָּ֥ת law dāt וָדִֽין׃ and judgment: dîn

וְהַקָּרֹ֣ב And the next qārôb אֵלָ֗יו unto ʾēl כַּרְשְׁנָ֤א him Carshena, karšĕnāʾ שֵׁתָר֙ Shethar, šētār אַדְמָ֣תָא Admatha, ʾadmātāʾ תַרְשִׁ֔ישׁ Tarshish, taršîš מֶ֥רֶס Meres, meres מַרְסְנָ֖א Marsena, marsĕnāʾ מְמוּכָ֑ן Memucan, mĕmûkān שִׁבְעַ֞ת the seven šebaʿ שָׂרֵ֣י׀ princes śar פָּרַ֣ס of Persia pāras וּמָדַ֗י and Media, māday רֹאֵי֙ which saw rāʾâ פְּנֵ֣י face, pānîm הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king's melek הַיֹּֽשְׁבִ֥ים which sat yāšab רִֽאשֹׁנָ֖ה the first riʾšôn בַּמַּלְכֽוּת׃ in the kingdom;) malkût

כְּדָת֙ according to law, dāt מַֽה What mâ לַּעֲשׂ֔וֹת shall we do ʿāśâ בַּמַּלְכָּ֖ה unto the queen malkâ וַשְׁתִּ֑י Vashti waštî עַ֣ל׀ because ʿal אֲשֶׁ֣ר ʾăšer לֹֽא she hath not lōʾ עָשְׂתָ֗ה performed ʿāśâ אֶֽת ʾēt מַאֲמַר֙ the commandment maʾămar הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ of the king melek אֲחַשְׁוֵר֔וֹשׁ Ahasuerus ʾăḥašwērôš בְּיַ֖ד by yād הַסָּֽרִיסִֽים׃ the chamberlains? sārîs

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר answered ʾāmar מְומּכָ֗ן And Memucan mĕmûkān לִפְנֵ֤י before pānîm הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek וְהַשָּׂרִ֔ים and the princes, śar לֹ֤א hath not lōʾ עַל to ʿal הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek לְבַדּ֔וֹ only, bad עָֽוְתָ֖ה done wrong ʿāwâ וַשְׁתִּ֣י Vashti waštî הַמַּלְכָּ֑ה the queen malkâ כִּ֤י but kî עַל also to ʿal כָּל all kōl הַשָּׂרִים֙ the princes, śar וְעַל and to ʿal כָּל all kōl הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים the people ʿam אֲשֶׁ֕ר that ʾăšer בְּכָל in all kōl מְדִינ֖וֹת the provinces mĕdînâ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ of the king melek אֲחַשְׁוֵרֽוֹשׁ׃ Ahasuerus. ʾăḥašwērôš

כִּֽי For kî יֵצֵ֤א shall come abroad yāṣāʾ דְבַר deed dābār הַמַּלְכָּה֙ of the queen malkâ עַל unto ʿal כָּל all kōl הַנָּשִׁ֔ים women, ʾiššâ לְהַבְז֥וֹת so that they shall despise bāzâ בַּעְלֵיהֶ֖ן their husbands baʿal בְּעֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ן in their eyes, ʿayin בְּאָמְרָ֗ם when it shall be reported, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ The king melek אֲחַשְׁוֵר֡וֹשׁ Ahasuerus ʾăḥašwērôš אָמַ֞ר commanded ʾāmar לְהָבִ֨יא to be brought in bôʾ אֶת ʾēt וַשְׁתִּ֧י Vashti waštî הַמַּלְכָּ֛ה the queen malkâ לְפָנָ֖יו before pānîm וְלֹא not. lōʾ בָֽאָה׃ him, but she came bôʾ

וְֽהַיּ֨וֹם day yôm הַזֶּ֜ה this ze תֹּאמַ֣רְנָה׀ say ʾāmar שָׂר֣וֹת shall the ladies śārâ פָּֽרַס of Persia pāras וּמָדַ֗י and Media māday אֲשֶׁ֤ר which ʾăšer שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ have heard of šāmaʿ אֶת ʾēt דְּבַ֣ר the deed dābār הַמַּלְכָּ֔ה of the queen. malkâ לְכֹ֖ל unto all kōl שָׂרֵ֣י princes, śar הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king's melek וּכְדַ֖י Thus too much day בִּזָּי֥וֹן contempt bizzāyôn וָקָֽצֶף׃ and wrath. qeṣep

אִם If ʾim עַל ʿal הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ the king, melek ט֗וֹב it please ṭôb יֵצֵ֤א let there go yāṣāʾ דְבַר commandment dābār מַלְכוּת֙ a royal malkût מִלְּפָנָ֔יו from pānîm וְיִכָּתֵ֛ב him, and let it be written kātab בְּדָתֵ֥י among the laws dāt פָֽרַס of the Persians pāras וּמָדַ֖י and the Medes, māday וְלֹ֣א that it be not lōʾ יַֽעֲב֑וֹר altered, ʿābar אֲשֶׁ֨ר That ʾăšer לֹֽא no lōʾ תָב֜וֹא come bôʾ וַשְׁתִּ֗י Vashti waštî לִפְנֵי֙ more before pānîm הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek אֲחַשְׁוֵר֔וֹשׁ Ahasuerus; ʾăḥašwērôš וּמַלְכוּתָהּ֙ her royal estate malkût יִתֵּ֣ן give nātan הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ and let the king melek לִרְעוּתָ֖הּ unto another rĕʿût הַטּוֹבָ֥ה that is better ṭôb מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ than she. min

וְנִשְׁמַע֩ shall be published šāmaʿ פִּתְגָ֨ם decree pitgām הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ And when the king's melek אֲשֶֽׁר which ʾăšer יַעֲשֶׂה֙ he shall make ʿāśâ בְּכָל throughout all kōl מַלְכוּת֔וֹ his empire, malkût כִּ֥י (for kî רַבָּ֖ה is great,) rab הִ֑יא it hûʾ וְכָל all kōl הַנָּשִׁ֗ים the wives ʾiššâ יִתְּנ֤וּ shall give nātan יְקָר֙ honour, yĕqār לְבַעְלֵיהֶ֔ן to their husbands baʿal לְמִגָּד֖וֹל both to great gādôl וְעַד ʿad קָטָֽן׃ and small. qāṭān

וַיִּיטַב֙ pleased yāṭab הַדָּבָ֔ר And the saying dābār בְּעֵינֵ֥י ʿayin הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek וְהַשָּׂרִ֑ים and the princes; śar וַיַּ֥עַשׂ did ʿāśâ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ and the king melek כִּדְבַ֥ר according to the word dābār מְמוּכָֽן׃ of Memucan: mĕmûkān

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח For he sent šālaḥ סְפָרִים֙ letters sēper אֶל into ʾēl כָּל all kōl מְדִינ֣וֹת provinces, mĕdînâ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king's melek אֶל into ʾēl מְדִינָ֤ה every province mĕdînâ וּמְדִינָה֙ mĕdînâ כִּכְתָבָ֔הּ according to the writing kātāb וְאֶל thereof, and to ʾēl עַ֥ם every people ʿam וָעָ֖ם ʿam כִּלְשׁוֹנ֑וֹ after their language, lāšôn לִֽהְי֤וֹת should hāyâ כָּל that every kōl אִישׁ֙ man ʾîš שֹׂרֵ֣ר bear rule śārar בְּבֵית֔וֹ in his own house, bayit וּמְדַבֵּ֖ר and that should be published dābar כִּלְשׁ֥וֹן according to the language lāšôn עַמּֽוֹ׃ of every people. ʿam
