כִּֽי If kî יִהְיֶ֥ה there be hāyâ רִיב֙ a controversy rîb בֵּ֣ין between bên אֲנָשִׁ֔ים men, ʾĕnôš וְנִגְּשׁ֥וּ and they come nāgaš אֶל unto ʾēl הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט judgment, mišpāṭ וּשְׁפָט֑וּם that may judge šāpaṭ וְהִצְדִּ֙יקוּ֙ them; then they shall justify ṣādaq אֶת ʾēt הַצַּדִּ֔יק the righteous, ṣaddîq וְהִרְשִׁ֖יעוּ and condemn rāšaʿ אֶת ʾēt הָֽרָשָֽׁע׃ the wicked. rāšāʿ

וְהָיָ֛ה And it shall be, hāyâ אִם if ʾim בִּ֥ן worthy bēn הַכּ֖וֹת to be beaten, nākâ הָֽרָשָׁ֑ע the wicked man rāšāʿ וְהִפִּיל֤וֹ shall cause him to lie down, nāpal הַשֹּׁפֵט֙ that the judge šāpaṭ וְהִכָּ֣הוּ and to be beaten nākâ לְפָנָ֔יו before his face, pānîm כְּדֵ֥י according to day רִשְׁעָת֖וֹ his fault, rišʿâ בְּמִסְפָּֽר׃ by a certain number. mispār

אַרְבָּעִ֥ים Forty ʾarbāʿîm יַכֶּ֖נּוּ stripes nākâ לֹ֣א he may give him, not lōʾ יֹסִ֑יף exceed: yāsap פֶּן lest, pēn יֹסִ֨יף he should exceed, yāsap לְהַכֹּת֤וֹ and beat nākâ עַל him above ʿal אֵ֙לֶּה֙ these ʾēlle מַכָּ֣ה stripes, makkâ רַבָּ֔ה with many rab וְנִקְלָ֥ה should seem vile qālâ אָחִ֖יךָ then thy brother ʾāḥ לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ unto thee. ʿayin

לֹֽא Thou shalt not lōʾ תַחְסֹ֥ם muzzle ḥāsam שׁ֖וֹר the ox šôr בְּדִישֽׁוֹ׃ when he treadeth out dûš

כִּֽי If kî יֵשְׁב֨וּ dwell yāšab אַחִ֜ים brethren ʾāḥ יַחְדָּ֗ו together, yaḥad וּמֵ֨ת of them die, mût אַחַ֤ד and one ʾeḥād מֵהֶם֙ hēm וּבֵ֣ן child, bēn אֵֽין and have no ʾayin ל֔וֹ לֹֽא shall not lōʾ תִהְיֶ֧ה marry hāyâ אֵֽשֶׁת the wife ʾiššâ הַמֵּ֛ת of the dead mût הַח֖וּצָה without ḥûṣ לְאִ֣ישׁ unto a stranger: ʾîš זָ֑ר zûr יְבָמָהּ֙ her husband's brother yābām יָבֹ֣א shall go in bôʾ עָלֶ֔יהָ unto ʿal וּלְקָחָ֥הּ her, and take lāqaḥ ל֛וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֖ה her to him to wife, ʾiššâ וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃ and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her. yābam

וְהָיָ֗ה And it shall be, hāyâ הַבְּכוֹר֙ the firstborn bĕkôr אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer תֵּלֵ֔ד she beareth yālad יָק֕וּם shall succeed qûm עַל in ʿal שֵׁ֥ם the name šēm אָחִ֖יו of his brother ʾāḥ הַמֵּ֑ת dead, mût וְלֹֽא be not lōʾ יִמָּחֶ֥ה put out māḥâ שְׁמ֖וֹ that his name šēm מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl

וְאִם And if ʾim לֹ֤א not lōʾ יַחְפֹּץ֙ like ḥāpēṣ הָאִ֔ישׁ the man ʾîš לָקַ֖חַת to take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt יְבִמְתּ֑וֹ his brother's wife, yĕbēmet וְעָֽלְתָה֩ go up ʿālâ יְבִמְתּ֨וֹ then let his brother's wife yĕbēmet הַשַּׁ֜עְרָה to the gate šaʿar אֶל unto ʾēl הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים the elders, zāqēn וְאָֽמְרָה֙ and say, ʾāmar מֵאֵ֨ן refuseth māʾēn יְבָמִ֜י My husband's brother yābām לְהָקִ֨ים to raise up qûm לְאָחִ֥יו unto his brother ʾāḥ שֵׁם֙ a name šēm בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל in Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֹ֥א not lōʾ אָבָ֖ה he will ʾābâ יַבְּמִֽי׃ perform the duty of my husband's brother. yābam

וְקָֽרְאוּ shall call qārāʾ ל֥וֹ זִקְנֵֽי Then the elders zāqēn עִיר֖וֹ of his city ʿîr וְדִבְּר֣וּ him, and speak dābar אֵלָ֑יו unto ʾēl וְעָמַ֣ד him: and he stand ʿāmad וְאָמַ֔ר and say, ʾāmar לֹ֥א not lōʾ חָפַ֖צְתִּי I like ḥāpēṣ לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃ to take her; lāqaḥ

וְנִגְּשָׁ֨ה come nāgaš יְבִמְתּ֣וֹ Then shall his brother's wife yĕbēmet אֵלָיו֮ unto ʾēl לְעֵינֵ֣י him in the presence ʿayin הַזְּקֵנִים֒ of the elders, zāqēn וְחָֽלְצָ֤ה and loose ḥālaṣ נַֽעֲלוֹ֙ his shoe naʿal מֵעַ֣ל from off ʿal רַגְל֔וֹ his foot, regel וְיָֽרְקָ֖ה and spit yārāq בְּפָנָ֑יו in his face, pānîm וְעָֽנְתָה֙ and shall answer ʿānâ וְאָ֣מְרָ֔ה and say, ʾāmar כָּ֚כָה So kākâ יֵֽעָשֶׂ֣ה shall it be done ʿāśâ לָאִ֔ישׁ unto that man ʾîš אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer לֹֽא will not lōʾ יִבְנֶ֖ה build up bānâ אֶת ʾēt בֵּ֥ית house. bayit אָחִֽיו׃ his brother's ʾāḥ

וְנִקְרָ֥א shall be called qārāʾ שְׁמ֖וֹ And his name šēm בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל in Israel, yiśrāʾēl בֵּ֖ית The house bayit חֲל֥וּץ loosed. ḥālaṣ הַנָּֽעַל׃ of him that hath his shoe naʿal

כִּֽי When kî יִנָּצ֨וּ strive nāṣâ אֲנָשִׁ֤ים men ʾîš יַחְדָּו֙ together yaḥad אִ֣ישׁ one ʾîš וְאָחִ֔יו with another, ʾāḥ וְקָֽרְבָה֙ draweth near qārab אֵ֣שֶׁת and the wife ʾiššâ הָֽאֶחָ֔ד of the one ʾeḥād לְהַצִּ֥יל for to deliver nāṣal אֶת ʾēt אִישָׁ֖הּ her husband ʾîš מִיַּ֣ד out of the hand yād מַכֵּ֑הוּ of him that smiteth nākâ וְשָֽׁלְחָ֣ה him, and putteth forth šālaḥ יָדָ֔הּ her hand, yād וְהֶֽחֱזִ֖יקָה and taketh ḥāzaq בִּמְבֻשָֽׁיו׃ him by the secrets: mābuš

וְקַצֹּתָ֖ה Then thou shalt cut off qāṣaṣ אֶת ʾēt כַּפָּ֑הּ her hand, kap לֹ֥א shall not lōʾ תָח֖וֹס pity ḥûs עֵינֶֽךָ׃ thine eye ʿayin

לֹֽא Thou shalt not lōʾ יִהְיֶ֥ה have hāyâ לְךָ֛ בְּכִֽיסְךָ֖ in thy bag kîs אֶ֣בֶן divers weights, ʾeben וָאָ֑בֶן ʾeben גְּדוֹלָ֖ה a great gādôl וּקְטַנָּֽה׃ and a small. qāṭān

לֹֽא Thou shalt not lōʾ יִהְיֶ֥ה have hāyâ לְךָ֛ בְּבֵֽיתְךָ֖ in thine house bayit אֵיפָ֣ה divers measures, ʾêpâ וְאֵיפָ֑ה ʾêpâ גְּדוֹלָ֖ה a great gādôl וּקְטַנָּֽה׃ and a small. qāṭān

אֶ֣בֶן weight, ʾeben שְׁלֵמָ֤ה a perfect šālēm וָצֶ֙דֶק֙ and just ṣedeq יִֽהְיֶה thou shalt have hāyâ לָּ֔ךְ אֵיפָ֧ה measure ʾêpâ שְׁלֵמָ֛ה a perfect šālēm וָצֶ֖דֶק and just ṣedeq יִֽהְיֶה shalt thou have: hāyâ לָּ֑ךְ לְמַ֙עַן֙ that maʿan יַֽאֲרִ֣יכוּ may be lengthened ʾārak יָמֶ֔יךָ thy days yôm עַ֚ל in ʿal הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה the land ʾădāmâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer יְהוָ֥ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm נֹתֵ֥ן giveth thee. nātan לָֽךְ׃

כִּ֧י For kî תֽוֹעֲבַ֛ת an abomination tôʿēba יְהוָ֥ה unto the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ thy God. ʾĕlōhîm כָּל all kōl עֹ֣שֵׂה that do ʿāśâ אֵ֑לֶּה such things, ʾēlle כֹּ֖ל all kōl עֹ֥שֵׂה that do ʿāśâ עָֽוֶל׃ unrighteously, ʿewel

זָכ֕וֹר Remember zākar אֵ֛ת ʾēt אֲשֶׁר what ʾăšer עָשָׂ֥ה did ʿāśâ לְךָ֖ עֲמָלֵ֑ק Amalek ʿămālēq בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ unto thee by the way, derek בְּצֵֽאתְכֶ֥ם when ye were come forth yāṣāʾ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ out of Egypt; miṣrayim

אֲשֶׁ֨ר How ʾăšer קָֽרְךָ֜ he met qārâ בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ thee by the way, derek וַיְזַנֵּ֤ב and smote the hindmost zānab בְּךָ֙ כָּל of thee, all kōl הַנֶּֽחֱשָׁלִ֣ים feeble ḥāšal אַֽחַרֶ֔יךָ behind ʾaḥar וְאַתָּ֖ה thee, when thou ʾattâ עָיֵ֣ף faint ʿāyēp וְיָגֵ֑עַ and weary; yāgēaʿ וְלֹ֥א not lōʾ יָרֵ֖א and he feared yārēʾ אֱלֹהִֽים׃ God. ʾĕlōhîm

וְהָיָ֡ה Therefore it shall be, hāyâ בְּהָנִ֣יחַ hath given thee rest nûaḥ יְהוָ֣ה when the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֣יךָ׀ thy God ʾĕlōhîm לְ֠ךָ מִכָּל from all kōl אֹ֨יְבֶ֜יךָ thine enemies ʾōyēb מִסָּבִ֗יב round about, sābîb בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ in the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer יְהוָֽה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱ֠לֹהֶיךָ thy God ʾĕlōhîm נֹתֵ֨ן giveth nātan לְךָ֤ נַֽחֲלָה֙ thee an inheritance naḥălâ לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ to possess yāraš תִּמְחֶה֙ it, thou shalt blot out māḥâ אֶת ʾēt זֵ֣כֶר the remembrance zēker עֲמָלֵ֔ק of Amalek ʿămālēq מִתַּ֖חַת from under taḥat הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם heaven; šāmayim לֹ֖א thou shalt not lōʾ תִּשְׁכָּֽח׃ forget šākaḥ
