  1. וַֽיְהִ֗י Now it came to pass hāyâ אַֽחֲרֵי֙ after ʾaḥar מ֣וֹת the death māwet שָׁא֔וּל of Saul, šāʾûl וְדָוִ֣ד when David dāwid שָׁ֔ב was returned šûb מֵֽהַכּ֖וֹת from the slaughter nākâ אֶת of ʾēt הָעֲמָלֵ֑ק the Amalekites, ʿămālēq וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב had abode yāšab דָּוִ֛ד and David dāwid בְּצִֽקְלָ֖ג in Ziklag; ṣiqlag יָמִ֥ים days yôm שְׁנָֽיִם׃ two šĕnayim
  2. וַיְהִ֣י׀ It came even to pass hāyâ בַּיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י on the third šĕlîšî וְהִנֵּה֩ that, behold, hinnē אִ֨ישׁ a man ʾîš בָּ֤א came bôʾ מִן out of min הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ the camp maḥăne מֵעִ֣ם from ʿim שָׁא֔וּל Saul šāʾûl וּבְגָדָ֣יו with his clothes beged קְרֻעִ֔ים rent, qāraʿ וַֽאֲדָמָ֖ה and earth ʾădāmâ עַל upon ʿal רֹאשׁ֑וֹ his head: rōš וַֽיְהִי֙ and it was, hāyâ בְּבֹא֣וֹ when he came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl דָּוִ֔ד David, dāwid וַיִּפֹּ֥ל that he fell nāpal אַ֖רְצָה to the earth, ʾereṣ וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ׃ and did obeisance. šāḥâ
  3. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar לוֹ֙ דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid אֵ֥י unto him, From whence ʾay מִזֶּ֖ה ze תָּב֑וֹא comest bôʾ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר thou? And he said ʾāmar אֵלָ֔יו unto ʾēl מִמַּֽחֲנֵ֥ה him, Out of the camp maḥăne יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl נִמְלָֽטְתִּי׃ am I escaped. mālaṭ
  4. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָ֥יו unto ʾēl דָּוִ֛ד And David dāwid מֶֽה him, How הָיָ֥ה went hāyâ הַדָּבָ֖ר the matter? dābār הַגֶּד tell nāgad נָ֣א I pray thee, nāʾ לִ֑י וַ֠יֹּאמֶר me. And he answered, ʾāmar אֲשֶׁר That ʾăšer נָ֨ס are fled nûs הָעָ֜ם the people ʿam מִן from min הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה the battle, milḥāmâ וְגַם also gam הַרְבֵּ֞ה and many rābâ נָפַ֤ל are fallen nāpal מִן of min הָעָם֙ the people ʿam וַיָּמֻ֔תוּ and dead; mût וְגַ֗ם also. gam שָׁא֛וּל and Saul šāʾûl וִיהֽוֹנָתָ֥ן and Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּנ֖וֹ his son bēn מֵֽתוּ׃ are dead mût
  5. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl הַנַּ֖עַר the young man naʿar הַמַּגִּ֣יד that told nāgad ל֑וֹ אֵ֣יךְ him, How ʾêk יָדַ֔עְתָּ knowest yādaʿ כִּי thou that מֵ֥ת be dead? mût שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl וִיהֽוֹנָתָ֥ן and Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּנֽוֹ׃ his son bēn
  6. וַיֹּ֜אמֶר him said, ʾāmar הַנַּ֣עַר׀ And the young man naʿar הַמַּגִּ֣יד that told nāgad ל֗וֹ נִקְרֹ֤א by chance qārāʾ נִקְרֵ֙יתִי֙ As I happened qārâ בְּהַ֣ר upon mount har הַגִּלְבֹּ֔עַ Gilboa, gilbōaʿ וְהִנֵּ֥ה behold, hinnē שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl נִשְׁעָ֣ן leaned šāʿan עַל upon ʿal חֲנִית֑וֹ his spear; ḥănît וְהִנֵּ֥ה and, lo, hinnē הָרֶ֛כֶב the chariots rekeb וּבַֽעֲלֵ֥י and horsemen baʿal הַפָּֽרָשִׁ֖ים pāroš הִדְבִּקֻֽהוּ׃ followed hard after him. dābaq
  7. וַיִּ֥פֶן And when he looked pānâ אַֽחֲרָ֖יו behind ʾaḥar וַיִּרְאֵ֑נִי him, he saw rāʾâ וַיִּקְרָ֣א me, and called qārāʾ אֵלָ֔י unto ʾēl וָֽאֹמַ֖ר me. And I answered, ʾāmar הִנֵּֽנִי׃ Here I. hēn
  8. וַיֹּ֥אמֶר And he said ʾāmar לִ֖י מִי unto me, Who אָ֑תָּה thou? ʾattâ וָיֹּאֹמַ֣ר And I answered ʾāmar אֵלָ֔יו him, ʾēl עֲמָֽלֵקִ֖י an Amalekite. ʿămālēqî אָנֹֽכִי׃ I ʾānōkî
  9. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר He said ʾāmar אֵלַ֗י unto ʾēl עֲמָד me again, Stand, ʿāmad נָ֤א I pray thee, nāʾ עָלַי֙ upon ʿal וּמֹ֣תְתֵ֔נִי me, and slay mût כִּ֥י me: for אֲחָזַ֖נִי is come ʾāḥaz הַשָּׁבָ֑ץ anguish šābāṣ כִּֽי upon me, because כָל whole in me. kōl ע֥וֹד yet ʿôd נַפְשִׁ֖י my life nepeš בִּֽי׃
  10. וָאֶֽעֱמֹ֤ד So I stood ʿāmad עָלָיו֙ upon ʿal וַאֲמֹ֣תְתֵ֔הוּ him, and slew mût כִּ֣י him, because יָדַ֔עְתִּי I was sure yādaʿ כִּ֛י that לֹ֥א he could not lōʾ יִֽחְיֶ֖ה live ḥāyâ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י after that ʾaḥar נִפְל֑וֹ he was fallen: nāpal וָֽאֶקַּ֞ח and I took lāqaḥ הַנֵּ֣זֶר׀ the crown nezer אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עַל upon ʿal רֹאשׁ֗וֹ his head, rōš וְאֶצְעָדָה֙ and the bracelet ʾeṣʿādâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עַל on ʿal זְרֹע֔וֹ his arm, zĕrôaʿ וָֽאֲבִיאֵ֥ם and have brought bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl אֲדֹנִ֖י my lord. ʾādôn הֵֽנָּה׃ them hither hēnnâ
  11. וַיַּֽחֲזֵ֥ק took hold ḥāzaq דָּוִ֛ד Then David dāwid בִּבְגָדָ֖ו on his clothes, beged וַיִּקְרָעֵ֑ם and rent qāraʿ וְגַ֥ם them; and likewise gam כָּל all kōl הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים the men ʾîš אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer אִתּֽוֹ׃ with him: ʾēt
  12. וַֽיִּסְפְּדוּ֙ And they mourned, sāpad וַיִּבְכּ֔וּ and wept, bākâ וַיָּצֻ֖מוּ and fasted ṣûm עַד until ʿad הָעָ֑רֶב even, ʿereb עַל for ʿal שָׁא֞וּל Saul, šāʾûl וְעַל and for ʿal יְהֽוֹנָתָ֣ן Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּנ֗וֹ his son, bēn וְעַל and for ʿal עַ֤ם the people ʿam יְהוָה֙ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וְעַל and for ʿal בֵּ֣ית the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel; yiśrāʾēl כִּ֥י because נָֽפְל֖וּ they were fallen nāpal בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ by the sword. ḥereb
  13. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֗ד And David dāwid אֶל unto ʾēl הַנַּ֙עַר֙ the young man naʿar הַמַּגִּ֣יד that told nāgad ל֔וֹ אֵ֥י him, Whence ʾay מִזֶּ֖ה ze אָ֑תָּה thou? ʾattâ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר And he answered, ʾāmar בֶּן the son bēn אִ֛ישׁ of a stranger, ʾîš גֵּ֥ר gēr עֲמָֽלֵקִ֖י an Amalekite. ʿămālēqî אָנֹֽכִי׃ I ʾānōkî
  14. וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָ֖יו unto ʾēl דָּוִ֑ד And David dāwid אֵ֚יךְ him, How ʾêk לֹ֣א wast thou not lōʾ יָרֵ֔אתָ afraid yārēʾ לִשְׁלֹ֙חַ֙ to stretch forth šālaḥ יָֽדְךָ֔ thine hand yād לְשַׁחֵ֖ת to destroy šāḥat אֶת ʾēt מְשִׁ֥יחַ anointed? māšîaḥ יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord's yĕhōwâ
  15. וַיִּקְרָ֣א called qārāʾ דָוִ֗ד And David dāwid לְאַחַד֙ one ʾeḥād מֵֽהַנְּעָרִ֔ים of the young men, naʿar וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said, ʾāmar גַּ֣שׁ Go near, nāgaš פְּגַע fall pāgaʿ בּ֑וֹ וַיַּכֵּ֖הוּ upon him. And he smote nākâ וַיָּמֹֽת׃ him that he died. mût
  16. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid דָּֽמְיךָ֖ him, Thy blood dām עַל upon ʿal רֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ thy head; rōš כִּ֣י for פִ֗יךָ thy mouth pe עָנָ֤ה hath testified ʿānâ בְךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר against thee, saying, ʾāmar אָֽנֹכִ֥י I ʾānōkî מֹתַ֖תִּי have slain mût אֶת ʾēt מְשִׁ֥יחַ anointed. māšîaḥ יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord's yĕhōwâ
  17. וַיְקֹנֵ֣ן lamented qûn דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid אֶת with ʾēt הַקִּינָ֖ה lamentation qînâ הַזֹּ֑את this zōt עַל over ʿal שָׁא֖וּל Saul šāʾûl וְעַל and over ʿal יְהֽוֹנָתָ֥ן Jonathan yĕhônātān בְּנֽוֹ׃ his son: bēn
  18. וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (Also he bade ʾāmar לְלַמֵּ֥ד them teach lāmad בְּנֵֽי the children bēn יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah yĕhûdâ קָ֑שֶׁת the bow: qešet הִנֵּ֥ה behold, hinnē כְתוּבָ֖ה written kātab עַל in ʿal סֵ֥פֶר the book sēper הַיָּשָֽׁר׃ of Jasher.) yāšār
  19. הַצְּבִי֙ The beauty ṣĕbî יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl עַל upon ʿal בָּֽמוֹתֶ֖יךָ thy high places: bāmâ חָלָ֑ל is slain ḥālāl אֵ֖יךְ how ʾêk נָֽפְל֥וּ fallen! nāpal גִבּוֹרִֽים׃ are the mighty gibbôr
  20. אַל not ʾal תַּגִּ֣ידֽוּ Tell nāgad בְגַ֔ת in Gath, gat אַֽל not ʾal תְּבַשְּׂר֖וּ publish bāśar בְּחוּצֹ֣ת in the streets ḥûṣ אַשְׁקְל֑וֹן of Askelon; ʾašqĕlôn פֶּן lest pēn תִּשְׂמַ֙חְנָה֙ rejoice, śāmaḥ בְּנ֣וֹת the daughters bat פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים of the Philistines pĕlištî פֶּֽן lest pēn תַּעֲלֹ֖זְנָה triumph. ʿālaz בְּנ֥וֹת the daughters bat הָֽעֲרֵלִֽים׃ of the uncircumcised ʿārēl
  21. הָרֵ֣י Ye mountains har בַגִּלְבֹּ֗עַ of Gilboa, gilbōaʿ אַל no ʾal טַ֧ל dew, ṭal וְאַל neither ʾal מָטָ֛ר rain, māṭar עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם upon ʿal וּשְׂדֵ֣י you, nor fields śāde תְרוּמֹ֑ת of offerings: tĕrûmâ כִּ֣י for שָׁ֤ם there šām נִגְעַל֙ is vilely cast away, gāʿal מָגֵ֣ן the shield māgēn גִּבּוֹרִ֔ים of the mighty gibbôr מָגֵ֣ן the shield māgēn שָׁא֔וּל of Saul, šāʾûl בְּלִ֖י not bĕlî מָשִׁ֥יחַ anointed māšîaḥ בַּשָּֽׁמֶן׃ with oil. šemen
  22. מִדַּ֣ם From the blood dām חֲלָלִ֗ים of the slain, ḥālāl מֵחֵ֙לֶב֙ from the fat ḥeleb גִּבּוֹרִ֔ים of the mighty, gibbôr קֶ֚שֶׁת the bow qešet יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן of Jonathan yĕhônātān לֹ֥א not lōʾ נָשׂ֖וֹג turned śûg אָח֑וֹר back, ʾāḥôr וְחֶ֣רֶב and the sword ḥereb שָׁא֔וּל of Saul šāʾûl לֹ֥א not lōʾ תָשׁ֖וּב returned šûb רֵיקָֽם׃ empty. rêqām
  23. שָׁא֣וּל Saul šāʾûl וִיהֽוֹנָתָ֗ן and Jonathan yĕhônātān הַנֶּֽאֱהָבִ֤ים lovely ʾāhab וְהַנְּעִימִם֙ and pleasant nāʿîm בְּחַיֵּיהֶ֔ם in their lives, ḥay וּבְמוֹתָ֖ם and in their death māwet לֹ֣א they were not lōʾ נִפְרָ֑דוּ divided: pārad מִנְּשָׁרִ֣ים than eagles, nešer קַ֔לּוּ they were swifter qālal מֵֽאֲרָי֖וֹת than lions. ʾărî גָּבֵֽרוּ׃ they were stronger gābar
  24. בְּנוֹת֙ Ye daughters bat יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֶל ʾēl שָׁא֖וּל Saul, šāʾûl בְּכֶ֑ינָה weep over bākâ הַמַּלְבִּֽשְׁכֶ֤ם who clothed lābaš שָׁנִי֙ you in scarlet, šānî עִם with ʿim עֲדָנִ֔ים delights, ʿēden הַֽמַּעֲלֶה֙ who put on ʿālâ עֲדִ֣י ornaments ʿădî זָהָ֔ב of gold zāhāb עַ֖ל upon ʿal לְבוּשְׁכֶֽן׃ your apparel. lĕbûš
  25. אֵ֚יךְ How ʾêk נָֽפְל֣וּ fallen nāpal גִבֹּרִ֔ים are the mighty gibbôr בְּת֖וֹךְ in the midst tāwek הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה of the battle! milḥāmâ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן O Jonathan, yĕhônātān עַל in ʿal בָּֽמוֹתֶ֖יךָ thine high places. bāmâ חָלָֽל׃ slain ḥālāl
  26. צַר I am distressed ṣārar לִ֣י עָלֶ֗יךָ for ʿal אָחִי֙ thee, my brother ʾāḥ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן Jonathan: yĕhônātān נָעַ֥מְתָּ pleasant nāʿēm לִּ֖י מְאֹ֑ד very mĕʾōd נִפְלְאַ֤תָה to me was wonderful, pālāʾ אַהֲבָֽתְךָ֙ hast thou been unto me: thy love ʾahăbâ לִ֔י מֵאַֽהֲבַ֖ת passing the love ʾahăbâ נָשִֽׁים׃ of women. ʾiššâ
  27. אֵ֚יךְ How ʾêk נָֽפְל֣וּ fallen, nāpal גִבּוֹרִ֔ים are the mighty gibbôr וַיֹּֽאבְד֖וּ perished! ʾābad כְּלֵ֥י and the weapons kĕlî מִלְחָמָֽה׃ of war milḥāmâ
