וַיְהִ֡י And it came to pass, hāyâ לְעֵת֩ that after ʿēt תְּשׁוּבַ֨ת was expired, tĕšûbâ הַשָּׁנָ֜ה the year šāne לְעֵ֣ת׀ at the time ʿēt צֵ֣את go out yāṣāʾ הַמְּלָכִ֗ים that kings melek וַיִּנְהַ֣ג led forth nāhag יוֹאָב֩ Joab yôʾāb אֶת ʾēt חֵ֨יל the power ḥayil הַצָּבָ֜א of the army, ṣābāʾ וַיַּשְׁחֵ֣ת׀ and wasted šāḥat אֶת ʾēt אֶ֣רֶץ the country ʾereṣ בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn עַמּ֗וֹן of Ammon, ʿammôn וַיָּבֹא֙ and came bôʾ וַיָּ֣צַר and besieged ṣûr אֶת ʾēt רַבָּ֔ה Rabbah. rabbâ וְדָוִ֖יד But David dāwid יֹשֵׁ֣ב tarried yāšab בִּירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם at Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim וַיַּ֥ךְ smote nākâ יוֹאָ֛ב And Joab yôʾāb אֶת ʾēt רַבָּ֖ה Rabbah, rabbâ וַיֶּֽהֶרְסֶֽהָ׃ and destroyed it. hāras

וַיִּקַּ֣ח took lāqaḥ דָּוִ֣יד And David dāwid אֶת ʾēt עֲטֶֽרֶת the crown ʿăṭārâ מַלְכָּם֩ of their king melek מֵעַ֨ל from off ʿal רֹאשׁ֜וֹ his head, rōš וַֽיִּמְצָאָ֣הּ׀ and found māṣāʾ מִשְׁקַ֣ל it to weigh mišqāl כִּכַּר a talent kikkār זָהָ֗ב of gold, zāhāb וּבָהּ֙ אֶ֣בֶן stones ʾeben יְקָרָ֔ה and precious yāqār וַתְּהִ֖י in it; and it was set hāyâ עַל upon ʿal רֹ֣אשׁ head: rōš דָּוִ֑יד David's dāwid וּשְׁלַ֥ל spoil šālāl הָעִ֛יר out of the city. ʿîr הוֹצִ֖יא and he brought yāṣāʾ הַרְבֵּ֥ה much rābâ מְאֹֽד׃ also exceeding mĕʾōd

וְאֶת ʾēt הָעָ֨ם the people ʿam אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בָּ֜הּ הוֹצִ֗יא And he brought out yāṣāʾ וַיָּ֨שַׂר in it, and cut śûr בַּמְּגֵרָ֜ה with saws, mĕgērâ וּבַֽחֲרִיצֵ֤י and with harrows ḥārîṣ הַבַּרְזֶל֙ of iron, barzel וּבַמְּגֵר֔וֹת and with axes. mĕgērâ וְכֵן֙ Even so kēn יַֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה dealt ʿāśâ דָוִ֔יד David dāwid לְכֹ֖ל with all kōl עָרֵ֣י the cities ʿîr בְנֵֽי of the children bēn עַמּ֑וֹן of Ammon. ʿammôn וַיָּ֧שָׁב returned šûb דָּוִ֛יד And David dāwid וְכָל and all kōl הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ to Jerusalem. yĕrûšālaim

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ אַחֲרֵיכֵ֔ן after this, ʾaḥar וַתַּֽעֲמֹ֧ד that there arose ʿāmad מִלְחָמָ֛ה war milḥāmâ בְּגֶ֖זֶר at Gezer gezer עִם with ʿim פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines; pĕlištî אָ֣ז at which time ʾāz הִכָּ֞ה slew nākâ סִבְּכַ֣י Sibbechai sibbĕkay הַחֻֽשָׁתִ֗י the Hushathite ḥušātî אֶת ʾēt סִפַּ֛י Sippai, sippay מִֽילִידֵ֥י of the children yālîd הָֽרְפָאִ֖ים of the giant: rāpāʾ וַיִּכָּנֵֽעוּ׃ and they were subdued. kānaʿ

וַתְּהִי And there was hāyâ ע֥וֹד again ʿôd מִלְחָמָ֖ה war milḥāmâ אֶת with ʾēt פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים the Philistines; pĕlištî וַיַּ֞ךְ slew nākâ אֶלְחָנָ֣ן and Elhanan ʾelḥānān בֶּן the son bēn יָעִ֗ור of Jair yāʿûr אֶת ʾēt לַחְמִי֙ Lahmi laḥmî אֲחִי֙ the brother ʾāḥ גָּלְיָ֣ת of Goliath golyat הַגִּתִּ֔י the Gittite, gittî וְעֵ֣ץ staff ʿēṣ חֲנִית֔וֹ whose spear ḥănît כִּמְנ֖וֹר beam. mānôr אֹֽרְגִֽים׃ like a weaver's ʾārag

וַתְּהִי there was hāyâ ע֥וֹד And yet again ʿôd מִלְחָמָ֖ה war milḥāmâ בְּגַ֑ת at Gath, gat וַיְהִ֣י׀ where was hāyâ אִ֣ישׁ a man ʾîš מִדָּ֗ה of stature, middâ וְאֶצְבְּעֹתָ֤יו whose fingers and toes ʾeṣbaʿ שֵׁשׁ six šēš וָשֵׁשׁ֙ and six šēš עֶשְׂרִ֣ים and twenty, ʿeśrîm וְאַרְבַּ֔ע four ʾarbaʿ וְגַם also gam ה֖וּא and he hûʾ נוֹלַ֥ד was the son yālad לְהָֽרָפָֽא׃ of the giant. rāpāʾ

וַיְחָרֵ֖ף But when he defied ḥārap אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַיַּכֵּ֙הוּ֙ slew him. nākâ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן Jonathan yĕhônātān בֶּן the son bēn שִׁמְעָ֖א of Shimea šimʿāʾ אֲחִ֥י brother ʾāḥ דָוִֽיד׃ David's dāwid

אֵ֛ל These ʾēl נוּלְּד֥וּ were born yālad לְהָֽרָפָ֖א unto the giant rāpāʾ בְּגַ֑ת in Gath; gat וַיִּפְּל֥וּ and they fell nāpal בְיַד by the hand yād דָּוִ֖יד of David, dāwid וּבְיַד and by the hand yād עֲבָדָֽיו׃ of his servants. ʿebed
