உடனே அவர்கள் விழுதுவிட்டு இருபது பாகமென்று கண்டார்கள்; சற்றப்புறம் போனபொழுது, மறுபடியும் விழுதுவிட்டுப் பதினைந்து பாகமென்று கண்டார்கள்.

உடனே அவர்கள் நங்கூரம்விட்டுப் பார்த்தபோது இருபது அடி ஆழம் என்று கண்டார்கள்; சிறிதுதூரம் போனபொழுது, மறுபடியும் நங்கூரம்விட்டுப் பார்த்தபோது பதினைந்து அடி ஆழம் என்று கண்டார்கள்.

அவர்கள் ஒரு கனமான பொருளை நுனியில் கட்டி கயிற்றை நீருக்குள் வீசினர். நீர் 120 அடி ஆழமானது என்று அவர்கள் கண்டனர். இன்னும் சற்று தூரம் சென்று கயிற்றை மீண்டும் வீசினர். அங்கு நீர் 90 அடி ஆழமாயிருந்தது.
